(Henry David Thoreau) Commodore We spent a few days anchored in Pelican Bay this Bev Duff month. It was quiet and calming even with the threatening rains. It was a Sea time much needed by this sailor. It takes many hands to run CMCS and once again a couple has stepped up. Thank you to Gay & Pat O Keefe for stepping up to take over the Ships Store. Russ Green & Rose Young have managed the store for over 2 years and they re ready to retire. I know that Gay and Patrick will do a great job, however, we do need another couple to step up as they are snow birds and IF we want the ships store open yearround we need a team. Don t be shy, it s really a great way to meet all the members. AND we are taking this committee to the 21 st century with the introduction of credit card purchasing. If you missed the March meeting then you missed Nautical Flea Market! Several members cleared their closets and garages to provide stuff for the rest of us to fill ours! That was really the program with the introduction of several cruises and racing program for CMCS and other clubs in the area. We were able to adjourn the meeting by 2030hrs which is really going to be my goal for future meetings. That said, I plan to begin the monthly meetings at 1900hrs with the Meet & Greet beginning at 1830hrs. Coming up at the April meeting is the Grill Night at the Pavilion of the CCYC. Please bring a protein to grill and a Pot Luck item to share. More info on that in the Chowder Chatter. Many thanks to the Liberty A Shore team for a flavorful Shrimp Fest that was enjoyed by about 80 members & friends. Wendy & Julie have done a wonderful job heading up that Committee! With CMCS, there is always something to do and I hope that everyone will take full advantage of our full schedule. Just remember to RSVP those events as requested. See you on the water! The Saturday Night Cocktail Party will again be at the Original Shrimp Dock but this year the Sunday Night Awards Dinner will be at Parrot Key Caribbean Grill which This should make it simpler for the Competitors, especially the ones who take advantage of the attractive slip rate of $1.50/ft which is being offered at Salty Sam s for our event. Thanks to the Soshnicks for heading up their first cruise. Steve and I will be your hosts at Palm Island March 29-April 1. Dockage is full. Condos are also available to rent that overlook the marina and there are anchorages nearby. We ll head to Pelican Bay on Thursday, then on to Palm Island Marina for two nights and then either back to Pelican Bay or head home. There s a great pool and lots of opportunities for dinghy exploration. Friday, there s happy hour and a potluck. Dinner on Saturday night is at Leverocks, which is the restaurant on site. If you d like to join us by land, head up on Saturday afternoon and hang out at the pool and stay for dinner. Next up we have the Find Your Way South Cruise from April Kim Brown and Judy Anderson of Trust Me!!! will be your hosts for this cruise. Please see their very entertaining flyer elsewhere in the Chowder Chatter. After that we will head to Pink Shell for the Bloody Mary Cruise/Race/Brunch event in that particular order. This is a new event in conjunction with the Jerry Pim Memorial Estebel Night Race. We ll have cruising, racing and brunching! Please see the flyer for details. The Pim family will be our hosts for this event but I will take reservations for the brunch portion of the event. Brunch is $5 per non-racer. Please register in advance and bring cash to the event. Second half a little slow and the finish, a little wet! My committee on the RC boat had a lovely afternoon under the canvas watching the boats come in. We had 12 registered and 10 finish the race. Great after party at our new adopted club house at Salty Sam s. I have attached the results (next page) two ways, one per division as the official BOTY results. I have also included the overall. One point regarding PHRF ratings The ratings you see are correct. The word is getting around about our wonderful club. Kudos to Diane Fowler who has been instrumental in getting new guests to come and experience our events and camaraderie. We had seven guests at our March meeting and there were multiple compliments about our organization. Our new members Larry and Linda Sherman also attended. 6 At this March meeting we held our annual Nautical Flea Market. It s amazing how many of our members have so much stuff to unload! It was a big success and lots of sales of much needed items and fun items were made. At those low prices, members got incredible bargains. I m also happy to report Walt and Ruth Nischt have submitted a new membership application. They are winter residents who hail from Medina Ohio. They have 40 years boating experience. They sail a 43 foot Hunter named Gypsy Soul. They recently spent two months sailing in the Bahamas and are expecting their first grandchild this coming September. Welcome aboard to Walt and Ruth. Be sure to look for the news item in this Chowder Chatter about Allen Fiske our Vice Commodore Summerset. Thank you to all our members for wearing your name tags to the meetings and other functions. Remember attendance to our events and volunteering add to what makes CMCS so special. HELP WANTED: Our Commodore Bev Duff has alerted us, in her message this month, that we are in need of a second couple to manage our Ships Store. Gay and Pat O Keefe are snow birds. So we need another couple to round out the team for year-round coverage. Hey, new members, this is a great way to participate and get to know your fellow club members. We all enjoyed succulent fresh shrimp expertly prepared by Liberty Ashore Chairpersons Bob Duff and Mike Wendy Cook and Julie Long Ziegler. The kitchen staff was augmented by Deedee Cheek, Kathleen Vance, M i - Liberty Ashore Corn Taster and selflessly tested each batch of the hot fresh cobs to ensure that the were cooked brilliantly for the other members. Once again, Carol Pim provided exquisite and creative c e n - 7 chael Cain and Bill Cook. Together they made up a well-oiled, perfectly orchestrated cooking machine which produced corn-on-the-cob, green beans, corn bread, salad and various accoutrements to supplement the yummy shrimp! Meanwhile, out in the dining room, Sue Stier, Russell Vance, Linda Raymond and Bev Slager were hard at work setting the tables and preparing for the banquet, and then helping with service. Linda performed the extra duty of volunteering to be the Official terpieces, which were originally created with the help of her grand-daughters Kaitlyn and Natalie, for the tables. And Tim Stier ensured that we were all entertained with some foot-tappin Zydeco music a perfect complement to a shrimp dinner.

Thanks to all the great volunteers, a splendid time was had by all, and we don t think a n y o n e went home hungry!! W h a t s next you ask?

He owned three sailboats and became a regular sight as a captain on Long Island Sound.

He believed his life as a sailor was over. Ironically, at about the same time, a sailor from Newport, R. I., by the name of Harry Horgan became a paraplegic and started Shake-A-Leg, Fiske explains.

Born in central Massachusetts, he spent summers on Cape Cod and on Rhode Island beaches. His fascination with sailing took hold early and continued through college and beyond. He owned three sailboats and became a regular sight as a captain on Long Island Sound. Allen Fiske aboard the 58-foot wheelchair-accessible catamaran Impossible Dream Then, at age 36, he was involved in a car accident that left him with paraplegia. He believed his life as a sailor was over. Ironically, at about the same time, a sailor from Newport, R. I., by the name of Harry Horgan became a paraplegic and started Shake-A-Leg, Fiske explains. Horgan developed an accessible sailboat called the Freedom Independence That would become the ticket to Fiske s independence as well. He sailed for a couple of years with Shake-A-Leg in Newport before moving to south Florida. In 1990, Shake-A-Leg opened a branch in Miami. For 12 years, Fiske was outreach director for Shake-A-Leg. Then last year, he was invited to crew for a month-long sail from Boston to Quebec City aboard the Impossible Dream, a 58-foot wheelchair-accessible catamaran, the only boat like it in the United States. We had been invited to join 40 Tall Ships from around the world and take part in RDV2017, the 150 th anniversary celebration of Canada, Fiske said. The Impossible Dream, under sail. Photos provided. Today, he still teaches sailing on Miami s Biscayne Bay. We use 10 of the specially designed sailboats and 10 disabled assistant instructors to teach graduate students at the University of Miami who are getting a Ph.D. in physical therapy how to sail, Fiske said. Fiske will talk about his journey as a disabled boat captain on Tuesday, March 27 at the Mound House, 451 Connecticut St., Fort Myers Beach. His talk is part of the Friends of the Mound House speaker series. It begins at 5:30 p.m. with refreshments; Fiske speaks at 6 p.m. Admission is free. 11 CMCS Chowder Chatter April, 2018 Page 11 CMCS PANTHER KEY FIND YOUR OWN WAY- SOUTH CRUISE APRIL 19-24, 2018 Most of us found our own way south when we made it to Lee County. So be daring once again and see if you can find your own way even southier. The goal is Panther Key in the Ten Thousand Islands for a Friday (April 20th) Rum Tasting. You have to figure out when you want to head south. Personally, we are going to head out on Thursday and go to Naples. We have heard good reports about the rebuilt Naples City Docks. But you might be inclined to pull up in Champney Bay in Naples or Factory Bay in Marco. On Friday, we intend to follow the Big Marco River from Marco to Goodland. This is a beautiful journey though depth can be an issue. Big boats will want to go out around Cape Romano to avoid the shallow waters and 55 bridges. Panther is a good sized anchorage between Coon Key and Indian Key. Common Sense will get you In don t cut the corners :-) This is a sipping rum tasting I have a bottle of last year s winner (Zacappa 23) and a bottle of Havana Club (from Havana). They will take on all comers for this year s title. So bring your best. Remember if you think Sailor Jerry is good rum then just come and learn. The bottles will be passed until there is a consensus winner. This will require multiple tastings. It is like March Madness with brackets and winners etc. except with rum and it s April. 11 Saturday will find us exploring in dinghies White Horse has nice beaches, Fakahatchee has ruins and a cemetery. I would suggest a pot luck on the beach in the evening but that will be bug dependent. We ll gather for Happy Hour at least be flexible and bring bug spray. Sunday, - Well you made it this far, now what? It s multiple choice: A) Head back north B) Head further south (Shark River, Keys, Tortugas) C) Chill in place Trust Me s current thought is to head up the Barron River to Everglades City for Sunday Night. The route is suspect for deep draft vessels but 4 or so should be ok unless the tides are extreme. We haven t decided if we are going to stay at Rod & Gun Club (CASH ONLY) or try out Everglades Isle which is a combo RV Park/Marina it is fancy new. Probably the latter. If you want to show up by RV they seem to have a $99 weekend special. Both sets of docks were wide open this past weekend so getting in either place should not be a problem. We ll be looking to do dinner Sunday night at Camellia Street Grill which is between the 2 docking choices. If we have a crowd joining us, we can phone ahead and they ll get it set up for us. Monday head home. We ll either stop in Naples or if it is going well and we got a good start push on through. You see If you find your way south you can certainly find your way North again. 12 CMCS Chowder Chatter April, 2018 Page 12 BLOODY MARY CRUISE/RACE/BRUNCH Fri. night Sun. morning, May 4-6, This is a brand new cruise for CMCS in We will be cruising to the beautiful Pink Shell Resort and Marina at Fort Myers Beach. This cruise is in conjunction with the Jerry Pim Memorial Estebel Nigh Race. CMCS has a special group 2-night rate of $2.50/ft. which includes use of the resort s 3 pools, 2 restaurants and spa as well as beach access. Electricity, water, direct TV and wifi are included. The marina is pet-friendly and advertises petfriendly amenities. Please make your dockage reservations directly with Pink Shell Marina at (855) HAPPY HOUR on the dock on Friday night at 1700 hrs, with folks having dinner at local restaurants or onboard. Saturday includes relaxing on the beach or at the pool before the race. Saturday evening will be the coastal race off of FMB. This is an easy race! We encourage cruisers as well as racers to get out there and join the fun. Contact James Gallagher, Rear Commodore-Racing for racing information and entry forms. After a great night of racing out on the gulf, Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. will be the Bloody Mary Brunch at the Pink Shell Marina. Bloody Marys, Mimosas and a light breakfast will be served. This event is complimentary for racers but a $5 fee is requested for non-racers. Shade will be provided but please bring your own chairs. Land cruisers are most welcome but we need to know in advance for purchasing the supplies for the libations. Sign-Up deadline for Bloody Mary Brunch event on Sunday, May 6th is Monday, April 30. The cost is $5 per person for non-racers and complimentary for racers. For racers, please indicate number attending Brunch on Sunday. The Pim family will be our hosts for this event.
