Commodore Jason Pim The Change of Watch and Chili Cook-off were a great time and went off without a hitch, thanks to so many generous volunteers and organizers. We look forward to more of our club's signature events with EPOL and Pelican Bay cruises around the corner, as well as the 2nd annual Winter Regatta Series firing up in February. It's time to get out there and get salty gang! Jason Pim Commodore 3

CMCS Chowder Chatter February, 2019 Vice Commodore of Summerset Report Rear Commodore of Cruising Report Ahoy! I made a very successful trip to Punta Gorda Sailing Club on Wednesday, January 9 to their monthly Membership Meeting. Vice Commodore of Summerset Allen Fiske Their Commodore, Diane Welsh, was nice enough to assemble Dennis Peck from Charlotte County Community Sailing, Roger Strube from Charlotte Harbor Youth Sail- FEBRUARY ing and a nice guy from Learn to Sail Inc. Each organization was presented a check for $300 for a total of $900 which matches the amount taken in at Summerset from their area. (picture attached) Beyond that, at this time of year we are starting to update the Sponsorship Forms, the website, and starting to think about bolstering our Committee. At our table at the February Membership Mtg we will be presenting our needs for people to get involved. See you then! Allen Fiske CMCS VC of Summerset s/v Minimum Balance Page 4 Rear Commodore Cruising Theresa has officially transferred the Cruising Commodore baton to me. As you all know, Theresa did a phenomenal job in 2018, and will definitely be a tough act to follow. I promised to continue her legacy of fun times and crazy outfits. So let s get started. The Edison Pageant of Lights is coming up February Bev and Bob Duff are our fantastic Cruise Leaders, and from all the information that Bev, et al have published thus far, all the info that you need is currently on -line. Bev is the exclusive focal point (argusgdn@comcast.com (239) ) for slip rentals and your attendance by land or sea at the Saturday Oyster and Chicken Fest, Happy Hours and Pot Luck Dinner. There are still a couple of slips available at the Legacy Marina, and please be sure to get signed up and your money in, preferably by Feb 5, for the Oyster/Chicken Event. Roy Malkin Next up, we are headed back to Pelican Bay the weekend of March for a leisurely, really laid back event. No matter how many times you anchor there, something is always new. For those new members, Pelican Bay is a perfect venue to begin your CMCS Cruising Experiences. Glen and Paula Vetter have volunteered to direct this Cruise, thank you very much. Glen will be preparing a Flyer, but typically we meet on Friday and Saturday on Dog Island around 5:00 PM for Happy hour (just bring an appetizer to share and of course your favorite libations. Saturday, we typically explore Cayo Costa, and the return home on Sunday. Please contact Glen or Paula with any questions (gwvetter@gmail.com, (239) The following weekend, March 22-24, Kim Brown and Judy Anderson will be leading our almost annual Rum and Reading event celebrating Bob Macomber s new book, Honoring

CMCS Chowder Chatter February, 2019 Page 5 the Enemy. Kim s Flyer is attached and contains an in-depth discussion of all weekend activities. Please be sure not to miss this one. Bring your favorite Rum to sip and enjoy Saturday afternoon at Woody s Waterside on Pine Island. In April, I need your help. We have two Cruises planned, one to Panther Key April 4-9, and then Celebrating Easter at the Burnt Store, Marina April Please give me call/text at (763) or BlownAway41@yahoo.com if you would like to volunteer to lead one of these Cruises. Latter this month, I will be sending out a Cruising Survey which will cover all aspects of our Cruising Initiatives. Please begin to give some thought as to where you have individually Cruised that might be interesting to add as a Club Sponsored Event. Completing this Survey is really important, as the entire Board is very interested in providing you with the most entertaining venues possible. Thanks for your participation in the CMCS Cruising Program Have Fun and Sail Safe, Roy Malkin s/v Blown Away Membership and Recruitment Membership and Recruitment Chairperson Cathy Friedel Ahoy Mates! Membership has been busy processing our membership renewals, problem solving for some members who have had trouble online and processing new memberships. This past meeting was so interesting! First, our new Commodore Jason Pim, took charge and managed a glitch with the membership presentation with quick thinking and good humor. Our Member, Eric Dow gave one of our best presentations about boating on the canal system in England. His presentation was hugely applauded by all members. Lynne Eaton joined as a crew member this December. She has lived in Ft. Myers for 2 years and was introduced to our club by Diane Fowler. Lynne hails from Racine/Burlington, Wisconsin. She has 30 years boating experience including sailing on Lake Michigan. Victor and Marion Moretta joined with a full boat membership this December also. They have a 303 Pearson sailboat named Margarita Our first new members of 2019 joined as they attended the Change of Watch diner. Welcome Bill and Cathy Gould. They have a Cape Dory 40 named Good Hope. They are interested in learning about our committees as well a cruising, socializing and crewing. Let s give them a big welcome and look for them out on the water. We had nine guests attend the January meeting! I m thrilled to announce that Spark Alonzo joined our club during the meeting. Spark is a Fort Myers resident hailing from Spain and New York. He has 45 years in boating, sailing and boat repair. He is experienced in delivering boats to the Caribbean and is a member of the Power Squadron in the Cape. Spark has a 30 foot Black Fin power boat named Triburon. Let s give a big hearty welcome to Lynne, Victor, Marion, Bill, Cathy and Spark. Membership renewals are still coming in. Even though they won t be listed in the Yearbook, 5

CMCS Chowder Chatter February, 2019 keep in mind you can find them on the website roster. It is maintained all through the year for our renewals and new members. Thank you to all our members for wearing your name tags to the meetings and other functions. That makes it so much easier to socialize really. Remember attendance to our events and volunteering add to what makes CMCS so special. Fair winds and following seas, Cathy Friedel Fleet Recruiter s/v Ambiance Ladies Bridge Club LADIES BRIDGE CLUB Next Event FEBRUARY Ladies Bridge Club Chairpersons Rose Ann Hoffman and Rose Young On Monday, February 4th LBC will join Sandy Canning lunch group at 12 noon. Restaurant location to be announced. RSVP either Sandy or Rose Ann Rose Ann Hoffman and Rose Young Co-Chairpersons, Ladies Bridge Club Page 6 Liberty Ashore Greetings from your Liberty Ashore Team! And welcome to our new leader Joan Capobianco. Joan has lots of fresh exciting ideas for 2019 and is looking forward to hosting all the members at the 2019 events. As Julie & Wendy fade into the sunset, we d like to Liberty Ashore thank everyone who made our Chairperson job so much fun for the last Joan Capobianco two years, and we are also excited to see what Joan will cook up for this year! Our Mardi Gras themed Chili Cook-Off was lots of fun this month. Approximately 60 members and guests enjoyed tasting concoctions from the 8 Chili Chefs who sweated over hot stoves for hours to prepare their amazing recipes. It was really hard this year to decide which chef was deserving of which bean. But the votes did come in, and fabulous New Orleans prizes of Café Du Monde Beignet Mix and Coffee (with a little spiking rum ) were awarded to Sigrid Diedricksen for the Hottest Chili, Diane & Mike Pfaff for the Most Traditional Chili, Gosia & Ross Fraser for the Most Original Chili, and Roy Malkin for the best Decorations. And although no bean votes were cast, by virtue of the highly technological CMCS Applause Meter, Debra George went home with the Best Mardi Gras Costume prize (a King Cake mix, Pat O Brien s Hurricane mix, and of course a little spiking rum! ). To top the night off, we all got to go home and watch the lunar eclipse (If you stayed up late enough, that is!!). Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all of the Chili Chefs and all of the members who helped with set-up and clean-up for a fabulous night of good food and good fun. Now on to next month! I know I have some big shoes to fill so I m going to give it my best shot! First, I would like to thank everyone for assisting me in the transition to the Liberty Ashore position and to all members who are making me feel so welcome!

CMCS Chowder Chatter February, 2019 Page 7 Liberty Ashore February is Membership Appreciation Night, (February 19 th at 6:30p.m.) and the theme is going to be Valentine s Day - with a twist. You, the Members, are the Heart of the group, so will y o u a l l b e m y V a l e n t i n e? Get dressed in your Valentine for a costume contest and expect some delicious treats! Contestants will be judged on Most Valentine s Themed costume. Secondly, we would not have CMCS without the hard work of our Officers, Board of Directors and Committee Chairpersons. At the February Member Appreciation Meeting, they will have tables set up so that you can familiarize yourselves with the new Officers, Board and Committees to determine where YOU would like to volunteer! And we will be awarding a prize for the Best Decorated/Most Informative Table, so Officers & Chairpersons make sure your table has your name and describes your duties and functions, and take it from there! 7 Our volunteers are so committed and appreciated and I am all about participation and FUN!!! Let s get more people involved and take this to the next level! I get into things, full sail, so throw all input at me, good and bad, so I can make all events fun and exciting for everyone. I look forward to my new position and serving all members to the best of my ability. Signing off for now, Joan Capobianco Liberty Ashore Chairperson s/v Bubbies II

CMCS Chowder Chatter February, 2019 Page 11 CMCS Rum and Reading Cruise a/k/a Macomber Cruise March Cruise Leaders are Kim Brown & Judy Anderson Bob Macomber is putting out a book this year. Big whoop- he does this every year (almost). After making us drink our rum off Panther Key last year because there was no book, this year it is back to York Island. Old hands know the drill but Friday, March 22, the fleet anchors off York Island/St. James City unless the wind tells us this is a bad idea. If the wind is wrong for York, it is right for Sanibel Bight. Once secured at anchor the multitude will gather for Happy Hour. While we have had 30 on Trust Me!!!, it is a stretch so hopefully a larger boat will raise their hand to host. Bring a little something to pass and something to sip about 5P. At 6p the actual Rum tastings begin. You are welcome to bring your best sipping Rum. Even if you don t want to enter a bottle there will be a good selection. Each year we have done this competition the quality has gone up. Little shot glasses are passed out. Bottles are passed around. Tastings happen. There are winners, there are losers. Last year, there were 7 contenders (or was it 8- things got fuzzy early in the process). The quality was extremely high- not a loser in the bunch. Best as I can remember it went down like this- Metusalem (Peter Wake s favorite) was paired against Havana Club Maestro and lost. So the new Dominican version (Metusalem was Cuban before the revolution) didn t cut it against the real Cuban Havana Club Maestro s winner Zacapa 23 went down to El Dorado. The Goslings Black Seal (prize from Halloween Cruise) was relegated back to the Dark and Stormy category. In the end, the best sipping rum for 2018 went to Roake s bottle of Kirk and Sweeny 12 yr. It was very, very pleasant. The whole contest almost came crashing down with the passing of AirBoss XS Apertif. Airboss has taken to converting regular rum to sipping rum by adding spices and then cask aging. Can t wait to see what they have stuck in the barrel this year. My we have talented people in CMCS. 11 Saturday, March 23, dawns neither bright nor early. The dinghies start to wander up the Monroe Canal in St. James City to Woody s about 11a. The Book party runs from 12-5p. The formal title is: 15 th Annual Pine Island Reader Rendezvous with Robert Macomber. If you can t come by boat come by car. It is always a great party. Eating, drinking, music and a chance to buy a copy or two of Bob s new book Honoring the Enemy. Nancy will take your money/ credit card and Bob will sign your book though you can probably give Bob the money and get Nancy to sign the book if you want. When you have had as much fun as you can stand, dinghy back to your boat. There is nothing official planned for Saturday night but there is often some socializing after naps Sunday, you are on your own. Head home, catch breakfast at 8a at the Ragged Ass or hang around until 11a and dinghy into The Waterfront to complete your culinary tour of Pine Island. Since the Waterfront is the old school house, it ties nicely with the reading theme. We try to monitor 72 and we can be reached at Kim & Judy Trust Me!!! KimTrustMe@gmail.com
