1 The Chowder Chatter Newsletter of the Caloosahatchee Marching & Chowder Society A Premiere Sailing Club of Southwest Florida Next Full Moon July 22 JULY 2013 C o m m o d o r e ' s M e s s a g e With ghosting sails we can glide along over water that scarcely shows a ripple and the feeling is one of calmness and tranquility. (Hal Roth) The Dog Days of Summer at upon us in full swing and certainly we see more calm waters than angry ones these days. Let s pray that is the way it stays through our Hurricane season. Would never wish a storm on elsewhere however, please not SW Florida! Many thanks to the folks who planned (or are planning) events these months. Rear Commodore Ron (Avanti) have been busy guiding our cruises to and fro in local waters. Our group who has been cruising the Bahamas has returned Commodore Bev Duff for the most part safely to home waters though Trust Me is planning on Abaco Race week before returning home by mid July. We have Franklin Lock Cruise (July 4 th ) upon us and those wanting to attend need to get hold of Cruise Leaders, Judy & Charles Tomlins. Early August (9 th &10 th ) is the Margaretville Cruise to Tween Waters that requires reservations ~ Gary & Jean Blessings leaders. And Mel Rudd is already gathering reservations for the Where the Wind Blows cruise (Labor Day weekend) to Naples, FL. Interest in any of these cruises ~ you need to check your CMCS Annual and call the cruise leaders. These all require marina reservations and there is always a waiting list. Besides the monthly CMCS meeting, in July we also have the Annual Picnic at the Pavilion at the Cape Coral Yacht Club on the 27 th of July. It s a grill out and Pot Luck event that always brings out the best cooks. Our Liberty Ashore gal, Jennifer Barch will be getting in touch with CMCS crew mates to assist with this always fun event. Also, if we could have some folks help organize some beach games and challenge events? The Cape Coral Yacht Basin has given us a great rate of $20 night for boats who wish to tie up overnite for the 26 th and/or 27 th. Jim Lasorella is our go-to man on that portion so please call him for reservations. Steve Romaine, Mr. Summerset, reminds all of us that Pink Shell Marina has great rates for the Summerset event the weekend of Oct ~ AND there is limited availability for those slips. Anyone interested (or knows anyone coming from out of town) needs to get on the list for those slips immediately. That s all from the helm for this month. Stay safe out there and look forward to seeing everyone out on the water. Fair winds & Calm Seas, Commodore Bev
2 Cruising Report Tropical storm Andrea killed the Dry Tortugas Cruise this year. Next year we plan to go in the middle of May and avoid this nonsense. Four boats made it to Punta Gorda for the Fisherman's Village Cruise. Avanti joined Windswept for a very windy Tuesday evening in Pelican Bay. Tanglefoot and Lazy Susan joined us Wednesday and we all enjoyed cocktails on Avanti. Windswept stayed behind as the rest of us motored on to Punta Gorda, where Perfect Dispersion joined us from their home port of Burnt Store Marina. Rear Commodore of Cruising Ron Maddix We enjoyed the pool, bicycle rides in the Historic District and grilling out Friday night. Saturday we returned to Pelican Bay for another night, following the arrow on top of the mast once again. Our next Cruise is to Franklin Locks over the 4th of July. Judy and Charles Tomlins along with Carolyn and Ben Preston are our Cruise Leaders. Judy is planning numerous activities for the boats and RV's that make the trip. Later in July we will cruise to The Cape Coral Yacht Basin in conjunction with our annual picnic. Jim Lasorella, the Dock Master and fellow CMCS member is giving the Club a special rate of $20/boat per day. Please call me to make your reservation now, since space is limited. Gary and Jean Blessing will lead our Cruise to Tween Waters on Aug. 9th. Reservations need to be made one month in advance, so call the Blessings now to attend this Cruise. Once again there will be a Jimmy Buffet theme which will be called "Meet us in Margaritaville". This was a great Cruise last year and you don't want to miss it. See you on the water. 6 Racing News It s June and things really quiet down in the racing department! CMCS had one racing event the Ladies Race on Saturday, June 8. Rear Commodore of Racing Diane Fowler was in charge of the Ladies Race and I m sure she will have a complete report including some color commentary! Here s a summary: the Race officer was Bev Duff on Bob Minahan s Blessings, with support from John Hodes and Andy Fitzgerald. Ray Gherardini manned the mark boat, Free Spirit. Mark Beauvois scored the two races. The fleet was split into two divisions based on handicaps. In the faster boat division, Air Supply, skippered by Sarah Johnson was first, followed by Windy City, skippered by Diane Fowler, and Vixen, skippered by Kelsey Johnson. In the slower boat division, Vakalele, skippered by Jane Fisher, was first, followed by Mark 1:17 skippered by Janet Carpenter and Wicked Wicked Ways, skippered by Rose Young. Bev and Bob Duff s Chase The Clouds will be the Race Committee for the start of our next race, the Kayusa Cup, on Saturday, September 14. The Kayusa Cup finishes at South Seas Plantation on Captiva Island, coincidentally the site of this year s CMCS South Seas Cruise! Thanks to all who volunteered so far. Of course, we always need lots of volunteers for the Summerset Regatta in October. Start thinking now about which events you ll be volunteering for! The future of our racing program hinges on volunteer participation. Enjoy your summer! Ladies Day Regatta Vixen s Vixens 6

9 2013 Pine Island Scallop Survey Volunteer BOAT CAPTAINS and SNORKELERS Needed Pine Island Sound Scallop Search Saturday, July 27, :30 a.m. 2 p.m. LEE COUNTY, Fla. (June 21, 2013) Join Florida Sea Grant UF/IFAS Lee County Extension and the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation by participating in the 2013 Pine Island Sound Scallop Search, a resource-monitoring program in which volunteers snorkel, looking for scallops in select areas within Pine Island Sound. The event is sponsored by Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program, Friends of Charlotte Harbor Aquatic Preserve and Pineland Marina. Purpose: To monitor and document the health and status of the bay scallop population. How it works: Up to 40 boats are needed with as many as 150 volunteer participants to search selected sites in Pine Island Sound and San Carlos Bay for the elusive bay scallop. History: Large populations of bay scallops (or Argopecten irradians) disappeared from Southwest Florida waters decades ago due in large part to degraded water quality, related declines in seagrass acreage, over-harvesting and other causes. Water quality and seagrasses have improved in many areas to levels that may once again support these important bivalves. This event is modeled after the successful Great Bay Scallop Search conducted in Tampa Bay since Pine Island Sound s inaugural event was in Need to know: Reservations are required to participate in the event. Space is limited, reserve your spot now. Scallop searchers will meet at 8:30 a.m. at Pineland Marina, Waterfront Drive, Pineland, FL, 33922, to receive survey equipment and instructions for the monitoring event. We will provide lunch to participants once you return to shore and report your information. We are recruiting: * * * * NOTE: THIS IS A NO HARVEST EVENT * * * * Volunteers with shallow-draft boats. Please let us know the style and size of your boat. Please bring a dive flag if you have one. Canoes and kayaks are also welcome, but sites are very limited; please sign up early. Personal watercraft (Jet Skis, SeaDoos, etc.) are not allowed in the search. Please let us know how many additional people you can take aboard so we can pair you with additional volunteer snorkelers. Snorkelers without boats are welcome, however space is limited. Volunteers need to bring: mask, snorkel and gloves and be able to snorkel/swim 50 meters (about 150 feet) along the bottom fins and weight belt are optional but suggested. Reservations are required. Survey sites and equipment are limited. The Scallop Search promises to be a popular event so sign up early!
