CMCS Chowder Chatter January, 2018 Page 3 Commodore Sandy Canning Commodore s Message My year as your Commodore has come to an end and I will be pleased to turn over the helm to Bev Duff and the new Board. I learned a lot and got to know a lot of people in our Club better this year by taking on the leadership role. And, although it was challenging at times, it was also very rewarding to serve. We have some very good and devoted members who will continue to steer the CMCS vessel into the future. Past Commodore. So, as I hope everyone felt they could do this year, please feel free to bring to me any concerns or feedback that you d like to make. Thank you for all the kind words I ve gotten about my year at the helm, it has been nice to hear that at least some thought I did an adequate job! Fair winds and following seas Sandy Canning Commodore S/V Rum Daze Vice Commodore of Summerset Report There are a few Committee positions still open and I would like to encourage everyone to volunteer where needed. You will get to know everyone better and get new members started on the right foot by volunteering for the Fleet Recruiter & Membership Committee; help make this next year interesting as Clubhouse Programs lead; keep CMCS at the forefront of our community as the Public Relations Committee Chair; or take on the Store Keeper position and help provide all our wonderful shirts and accessories. As you know, we have many traditions that we d like to keep alive. However, we should also embrace new ideas and approaches. Sometimes events are not well attended or things aren t working out as intended. We must not be afraid to try out new ideas or change things that just aren t working. So keep your mind open and participate in the tradition as well as giving the new approaches and events a chance. And make sure to give your feedback to the appropriate organizers it s your Club too, so keep it growing and changing in a positive direction. I want to thank all of the Board Members, Committee Chairs and volunteers who worked their buns off in 2017 to make this Club the best! I will continue to serve on the Board in 2018 in what Don Lawson calls the best position ever Vice Commodore of Summerset Allen Fiske A week ago, Steve Romaine and I presented a check for $1000 to the Ostego Bay Foundation in Ft Myers Beach. At our great Christmas Party on Tuesday night, I presented a check for $3000 to Art Monahan of the Edison Sailing The final act of the year in terms of Summerset is to distribute the Profits to deserving Youth Sailing and Education Programs in our area. This year, again 90% of the participation and sponsorship came from the Ft Myers/ Cape Coral area and 10% came from Charlotte Harbor. 3

There is another $4000 being held in escrow till the summer when the Edison Sailing Center hosts their Summer Program. There will be (20) $200 L e a r n - to-s a i l grants available to deserving kids in our area. Please contact Marla Parker, our Grants Administrator, at On January 10, Steve Romaine and I will be going up to the Punta Gorda Sailing Club to present (3) $300 checks to Youth Sailing Programs there. The three programs are Charlotte Harbor Community Sailing, Learn to Sail Inc, and Charlotte Harbor Youth Sailing. Allan Fiske Vice Commodore of Summerset s/v Minimum Balance Rear Commodore of Cruising Report Rear Commodore Cruising Theresa Roake We had a successful cruising year in 2017 despite that pesky hurricane business. Over 50 boats went on a CMCS official cruise this year and spent nearly 350 days out on the water! Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen and participated. We look forward to seeing even more boats out in Thanks again to everyone who completed our Cruising survey. Surprise, Surprise the most popular activity on a cruise is Happy Hour so look for more of those in A dinghy happy hour was suggested and we hope to do one of those daisy-style later in the year. The most popular new destination was a cruise to Pink Shell so we ve added that to the calendar in May. Another interesting suggestion was to have dinghy races when we re at anchor so On Your Mark, Get Set, Go! Many more suggestions were offered and we will do our best to implement them. Kudos to Susan and John Reekie for hosting the Thanksgiving cruise at Pelican Bay. It was beautiful weather all week except for that rain Thanksgiving morning. You know you re living right when the heavens part and clear as you re getting ready to go to dinner at Cabbage Key. As you read this, folks are off cruising to Fisherman s Village for New Years. Thanks to Carolyn Wilson and Dan Green for hosting parties in the Captain s Lounge and helping our club ring in Next up is the Edison Parade of Light cruise to Legacy Marina in downtown Fort Myers. Bev and Bob Duff have graciously agreed to be your hosts again in Look for more information from Bev elsewhere in the newsletter and on our website. If you d like to join us by land, please do so. Legacy also has hotel rooms at a reasonable price if you d like to join us for the weekend and walk over to the parade celebrating Thomas Edison s birthday after the oyster et al. feast. That s all for now. Hope to see you out on the water in Theresa Roake s/v Lionheart

DECEMBER CMCS Chowder Chatter January, 2018 Page 5 Rear Commodore-Racing s Report Rear Commodore Racing James Gallagher Winter Series Regatta #1 January 27, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM - $20 The plan here is to take advantage of the exceptional sailing weather in the height of Season and run a weekly beer can series. For people familiar with sailboat racing, other sailing clubs will have an evening series, or a Sunday series, where they run weekly races for 5 to 8 weeks in a row is our inaugural scheduling of just such a series with five weekly races. This series will be known as the CMCS Winter Series, and will be run on five Saturday mornings in late January thru early February. All the snowbirds should be here, the weather will be fantastic. The entry fee is $20 per regatta. Winter Series Regatta #1 will consist of up to three buoy races. If you are not yet registered to race in CMCS sponsored race events, go to our CMCS Racer Registration page. If you are already registered to race in CMCS sponsored race events, go to our CMCS Race Payments page. Note, we have brought forward all 2017 participants as registered for the season. More information to come James Gallagher Rear Commodore Racing got it right! Membership and Recruitment Membership and Recruitment Chairperson Bev Duff AHOY CMCS members! It s that time of year to reflect on the past and quickly move forward! I will say this, our new 2018 Yearbook is appearing shortly. APPLAUSE to the Yearbook Committee headed by Jim Slager with Bev Slager and the team work of the WEB master, Glen Vetter and yours truly. We have been crossing our T s, dotting our I s and hoping we The 2018 Yearbook will be available at the Annual Awards Dinner on January 5 th and then each membership meeting after that. Reminder than we have a membership meeting this year on the 16 th of January. Welcome to new members who joined the later part of 2017 ~ Jim Kimmet just made the deadline for the yearbook with this application. He joining us as a CREW member with a life time of sailing experience.miles Hutchinson, sponsored by Joe Vidal is joining our ranks as well. We met Miles at the Labor Day cruise and are looking forward to seeing more of him on future cruises where his main interest is... Robert & Mary Beth Hill who are just adjusting to the SWF life style, still somewhat seasonal. Be looking for their boat Destiny (Catalina 34) on the local waters!...lonny Hill has braved the waters to join CMCS as a CREW member. Another fellow with a lifetime of sailing experience ~ I just love to be around boats he shares. Jeff Young & Genevieve Matz have joined our ranks now being Fulltime Floridians. They are on the lookout for a good boat so if anyone knows of a great deal out there Gosia Paczyhski wants to CREW and has lots of experience to offer a racing captain. If you need a new name tag, please let the Membership Committee know when you attend the meetings. It is so helpful to everyone to wear our name tags. Thank you, all members, 5

CMCS Chowder Chatter January, 2018 Page 6 Membership and Recruitment This sailing Gal is moving onto other duties within CMCS. I ve really enjoyed hosting the Fleet Recruiter position and encourage anyone to take the position if they want to meet everyone in the Club. I look forward to greeting everyone from the head podium as I m be helming CMCS as the 2018 Commodore. LIBERTY ASHORE Club; Barry Long resolved our catastrophic, last minute not enough cutlery crisis, and helped with KP duties; Tim Stier arranged the audio; Sue Stier, Jim Kimmet (a new member who volunteered to help during his first event!), Stephanie & Ross Webb, Mark & Maureen Franzer, Please don t be shy about putting your talents forward for CMCS. Our volunteers are what make CMCS so special. Look forward to seeing all the CMCS burgees on our waterways. 6 Fair Winds, Bev Duff, Fleet Recruiter LIBERTY ASHORE Liberty Ashore Chairpersons Wendy Cook and Julie Long 2018 is almost upon us, and we are looking back at all of t h e f a b u l o u s events CMCS hosted, both at sea and ashore, in The Holiday Party during the December Membership Meeting was attended by 124 members and guests. And, one thing for certain, nobody went home hungry! Loads of ham, turkey & gravy, and cranberry sauce were dished out, and members served themselves to appetizers, side dishes and desserts. Everything was yummy! Cape Coral Caring Center also benefitted from our holiday cheer. CMCS members donated 140 pounds of food, 43 toys and $165 in cash/checks, which were collected, loaded up and delivered by Susan & John Reekie with help from Don & Joan Lawson. Thanks to all for that! The Liberty Ashore Team would also like to thank all of the elves in the workshop who made this event a success: Bill Cook baked and carved the 5 hams, and helped with KP duties at the Yacht Carolyn Wilson, and Sandy & Gerry Canning arrived early to do the table setting/decorations and assist with food prep; George & Pixie Noyes, Elise Missall and Gary Kuzminski (another first time attendee racer from Chicago) did a great job managing the Meat and Side Dish Stations; and Deedee & Tim Cheek, Pat & Gay O Keefe, and Bev Slager did the dirty work and helped with clean-up. A host of others provided lending hands and contributed to our great crew. We couldn t have done it without you all! And now, on to 2018!! Our first event is the Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at the Cape Coral Yacht Club Pavilion. The theme this year is Mardi Gras, and the good times will roll! So dust off those cobwebs and pull out your Grandmother/Great Aunt/Mom s

CMCS Chowder Chatter January, 2018 Page 7 LIBERTY ASHORE tightly guarded Chili recipe, and sign up for the competition. As usual, FABULOUS prizes will be awarded! Check the website or the flyer in this newsletter for more information. We wish you all a happy and prosperous 2018!! Wendy Cook and Julie Long Liberty Ashore Chairpersons m/v Calypso and s/v Gone with the Wind EDISON SAILING CENTER What s Going On at Edison Sailing Center? Despite a hussy named Irma, ESC s fifty youth sailors and families made the north shore shipshape and ready to launch its school year programs by late September. The fastest growing program throughout our region remains the high school sailing program. More than 30 of our 50 sailors this fall are sailing the 420s. It also follows that the majority of these 420 sailors are teens or tweens the 420 has a strong appeal to the social nature of our sailors. And with a jib & main it s an introduction to big boat sailing. Bermuda was the host to last summer s America s Cup and two Fort Myers junior women sailors were selected from a pool of hundreds of applicants across the USA to help lead STEM activities in Bermuda s premier racing event and serve as ambassadors for youth sailing. Abigail Clinger and McKenna Wherry met Team Oracle and taught children about how sailors use the wind. Our girls applications rose to the top because of their work with Project Reach and ESC s partnership with St. Michael School. EDISON SAILING CENTER Our Optimist Green Fleet (the neophytes) is also strong this year 17 sailors in this program coached by Art & Denise Monahan s older daughter. Sydney has already completed her US Sailing Level 2 coaching certification, Reach Educator certification and is a candidate for the Level 3 Head Coach certification this spring. Sydney s energy and determination are making a difference in our newest sailors. She is an 11 th grader at FMHS in the IB program and is finding time to work on her own sailing skills. Last summer she participated in a foiling clinic at Oakcliff (the Ivy League of sailing schools). Sydney also earned the Most Improved sailor at the annual Leiter Cup in Texas the top junior women s competition in the US The funds from Summerset are a major factor in the opportunities for sailors like Sydney. Three other ESC sailors have benefited directly from the Travel Funds: travel & competition in the US O pen Bic Championships, travel and participation in two U.S. Olympic Development Clinics in California, and travel to an International regatta with a 1 st place finish as the reward!! Likewise, the summer sailing grants have provided more than 20 children every summer the opportunity to learn to sail or to increase their sailing abilities. There s a lot of chatter around safety in youth sailing: helmets for high performance racing but also for learn-to-sail; parents, coaches and volunteers all being required to take online training in SafeSport (includes bullying & harassment and concussion training); consideration of prop guards on powerboats. Edison has some teen sailors who could benefit from sailing/racing with some mentor sailors in CMCS. CMCS sailors are always welcome at ESC. Come see what the kids are doing! And thank you to everyone who supports youth sailing you make a difference in children s lives. Stephanie Webb Edison Sailing Center 7

DECEMBER CMCS Chowder Chatter January, 2018 Page 8 Christmas Party Ahoy Ladies On Tuesday December 5 th the annual Ladies Bridge Club Christmas Party was held at Cathy Friedel s home. The festivities began at 7:00 pm with 26 members participating. This was the largest number of participants we ve had in the past few years. As a variety of wines, beers and soft drinks began to flow, there was barely enough table room for all the snacks LADIES BRIDGE CLUB Ladies Bridge Club Chairpersons Rose Ann Hoffman and Rose Young and desserts. Snacks included a selec- tion of deviled eggs, quiche, shrimp cocktail, crab me- dallions, crock pot offerings as well as a array of dips and spreads. A homemade berry pie highlighted the dessert table along with a variety of cakes, a beautiful edible fruit bouquet thanks to Roseanne Hoffman, candies, cook- ies and brownies. The highlight of the party is the Pirate gift swap. An assortment of hand bags, canvas totes, a coffee thermos with gourmet c o f f e e s, and two soft cuddly throws were stolen multiple times. Last but not least was the hilari- ous addition of the cleavage maker [don t ask] and the aquamarine M e r - maid get up. O l d a n d f r i e n d s new acquaintances enjoyed the party and the camaraderie. The evening ended by 10:00 pm with ladies drifting out with their new treasures and happy hearts to kick off this Christmas season. 9 CMCS Chowder Chatter January, 2018 Page 9 LADIES BRIDGE CLUB THANKSGIVING CRUISE Wednesday skies were clear, the cruise north to Pelican Bay was uneventful with very little wind. By Wednesday night the predicted rain started and it rained and rained and rained all night. We found leaks that were never there before. By morning it was still raining. Our club had a reservation for 2pm for Thanksgiving Dinner at Cabbage Key. At 1:30 John & I got into our foul weather gear and set out for the restaurant. About five minutes into the trip the rain stopped and the skies cleared, just a few clouds lingered. I looked back toward Pelican Bay and could see everyone scurrying to their dinghies to take advantage of the break in the rain. Twenty hardy CMCS souls had a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. It seemed like everyone got an extra helping of turkey on this not so perfect weather day. The rest of the weekend the winds blew and the skies turned blue. The crews of Windswept, Windy City and Lazy Susan ventured south to the Cheedix cut (Tunnel of Love) where we encountered an alligator, we gave him a wide berth and landed our dinghies at a different sandy shore. While we were dodging that alligator some of our members had spotted a gator in manatee hole sunning himself. Other members took advantage of the hiking trails on Cayo Costa and the tram ride to the beautiful beach. 9 LADIES BRIDGE CLUB Full Moon Walk 6 Mile Cypress Slough Preserve 7751 Penzance Blvd, Fort Myers January 30, :30pm Cost $7.00 per person This is opened to the entire CMCS membership.
