1 The Chowder Chatter The Official Newsletter of The Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society Cape Coral / Fort Myers, Florida Next Full Moon: January 24 P.O. Box , Cape Coral, Fl January 2016 Commodore s Message Wow! That had to have been the fastest year in my life! I guess what they say is true. The older you get, the faster the time goes. It seems like we just had the Change of Watch Dinner and now, we have it planned again. This has been a very interesting year for me. Being relatively new to the club, I was faced with the usual feeling of being an outsider. My plan was to get involved in the running of the club and thereby get Commodore to know the key people from the inside Allen Fiske out. It worked and I encourage any of you to try the same thing. Once you gain the confidence of the key people, you can relax and really start enjoying all that our great club has to offer. My biggest regret is that I was not able to take part in more of our on-water activities. There is truly a smörgåsbord of activities ranging from helping with the Summerset Regatta, helping with the River Romp Regatta, Racing to Key West or spending a relaxing Thanksgiving in Cabbage Key. This club has something for every kind of Sailor and this Sailor will make a better effort in 2016 to take a more active part on the water. We had quite a few accomplishments in DeDee Cheek took on the task of assembling and updating the Job Descriptions for Officers, Directors and Committee Heads. This is super important because it allows anyone who is interested in getting more involved in the running of the club to see what they would be getting themselves into. She did a fantastic job and the result can be found on our website, when you log in as a member, under Hints and Tips for Event Coordinators. Thanks DeDee. Rodger Pfeiffenberger motivated us to form the Club Development Committee to try to help us get a better handle on recruiting and grooming members to take on responsibility within the club. It sure can't hurt to be looking and thinking ahead. Thanks Rodger. Stephanie Webb and Bev Duff took on another daunting task, that of bringing our Club Bylaws up to date. Getting the whole Board of Directors involved in looking at the wording and meaning of each line was very tedious and took much time, but the end result is a very comprehensive set of guidelines. Thank you Stephanie and Bev. Along the line we were able to congratulate our Senior Honorary Member Steve Colgate on both his induction into the National Sailing Hall of Fame and running his Offshore Sailing School for 50 years. In addition one of the young sailors the club has sponsored through the Edison Sailing Center, Jack Gower, was very successful racing in the Laser Fleet on the National Level, finishing in the top 10% of three major regattas. As a result, he has been invited to attend Olympic Development Clinics. Go Jack! The last big thing we accomplished was hosting the 50 th Annual Summerset Regatta. Most of the credit goes to Steve Romaine, who almost single-handedly assembled a list of over one hundred sponsors, and seventy participating yachts, generating over $20, that we will be able to dole out to Youth Sailing Programs up and down the West Coast. But he could not make it happen alone. He has had a dedicated committee, spearheaded by people like Suzanne Aguilara, Kathleen Vance, Carol Pim and of course Cindy Carlino who have been with him for five or more years. It was truly a fantastic accomplishment accentuated by an Awards Dinner at the Diamond Head Resort attended by over one hundred seventy-five people. Steve, we just can't thank you enough! What a year! All in all, it has been a very interesting experience. How could I go wrong hanging out with a bunch of people who Love Sailing as much as I do? The only thing left on my 2015 club calendar is the Change of Watch Dinner on Jan 9. It makes for a Super Special Occasion when you bring together the group of members who care enough to really get involved and help make things happen. I an eager to see if they like the Blues Band that I picked out! 2 CMCS Chowder Chatter January, 2016 Page 2 Rear Commodore of Cruising s Report Rear Commodore- Cruising Kim Brown Thanks to everyone who raised their hand and volunteered this past year. The many hands made light work. From Rose Ann and Paul making EPOL happen at the start to Carolyn and Dan ringing in the New Year, I have been blessed with a fleet of cruise leaders and volunteers. In the course of the year we had 72 different boats take part in one or more of the club s 15 official cruises. Individual boat participation ranged from 1 to 12 cruises with the average per boat just over 3. We had 18 boats that qualified on the cruising side for Bomgardner consideration. That meant they participated in at least 5 cruises. The Club is really lucky to have Jean Blessing herding the cats (and monohulls ;-) this coming year. However, just like I couldn t do it alone, neither can she. So please raise your hand. Certainly, every one of those 18 boats that qualified for Bomgardner can offer to do at least one cruise. Look at next year s calendar and make the offer to Jean before the begging begins. Pay it forward. I think everyone generally had a good time this past year which I considered the goal. I am sure Jean would like to hear suggestions for the New Year. What surprised me the most this past year is how little the opportunity there is to innovate. Work on the calendar begins the June before in order to coordinate scheduling with racing. The calendar is put to bed long before the new rear commodore takes over. The list of marinas and slots that can and want to accommodate 15+ sail boats is not long. Same on anchorages reasonably close. We have over the last couple of years had a tough time filling the longer cruises. This past year was no exception. I am constantly amazed that weather is not more of an issue. This is a great climate with only the summer being a challenge. We know enough to schedule plug-in cruises for those months. We do get rained on but only very rarely is it enough to spoil the whole weekend. And often the rain is inland or in town but not in Pine Island Sound. This is not to say you should feel secure in building your Danger Island Chowder shack out of cardboard. ;-). Perfect weather is the enemy of good enough when deciding whether to go. On a too windy Thanksgiving we had a blast sailing to Cabbage Key (and we even sailed about halfway back on Sunday). We had Alice s Restaurant on the stereo and followed the sail with a Thanksgiving Dinner that couldn t be beat. We suffer so Rear Commodore of Cruising s Report Thanks for letting me serve. Good luck to Jean. We ll see you on a cruise. Kim Brown Rear Commodore-Cruising s/v TrustMe!!!!! Thanksgiving Cruise Recap For the long Thanksgiving weekend the weather gods provided us with sunny skies, perfect temperatures, and fast sailing winds which provided some record fast passages up to Pelican Bay. As is typical for this cruise, and as expected for our unique little society, boats came and went as fit their personal desires. When the cruise leaders (i.e. the members that said they'd keep an inventory of attendees) arrived on Tuesday, they found six boats starting the cruise a day early - Air Boss, Blank Check, Bridget O'Toole, Freestyle, Lionheart, and Zydeco. As is the tradition for this cruise, we gathered every evening on a beach at sunset. Wednesday evening six more boats had joined the crowd. Jolly Mon, Kestrel II, Never Say Never, Pro Re Nata, Rum Daze, and Seamist. As you can guess, after exploring the State Park, and the bay, we again gather on a beach to celebrate yet another day in paradise. By Thursday we had four more join us. Four Seasons, Mischief, Trust Me, and Vayu arrived just in time for our terrific 2 PM Thanksgiving dinner, with all the traditional trimmings, at Cabbage Key. All together we had 28 Society members for dinner. Friday and Saturday saw six more boats arrive. Ariel, Barefeet, Chase the Clouds, White Star, Samphire, and Tyrolia. We can safely say that every nook and cranny of the bay, the park, and the beaches were explored. Much food and drink was consumed. And many tales were told whether true or not, no one really cares. All told, 22 vessels transporting 45 members ventured out. Respectfully submitted by cruise leaders, Glen & Paula Vetter s/v Freestyle

Thanks to all who have helped make The Summerset Regatta the premiere regatta in Southwest Florida. Let s keep up the tradition!! Vice Commodore-Summerset Steve Romaine s/v Air Supply The 2015 CMCS racing season ended on a somewhat disappointing note.
