The Chowder Chatter The Official Newsletter of The Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society Cape Coral / Fort Myers, Florida Next Full Moon: Aug. 29, Sept. 27 P.O. Box , Cape Coral, Fl September 2015 Commodore s Message Commodore Allen Fiske Ahhh. I can feel the thunderstorms letting up and the cooler weather coming. September, boy that has a nice ring to it. It won't be long now and the temperatures will go from the 90's to the 80's. Up North, when Labor Day arrives, it pretty much means the Sailing Season is over. Here, in Southwest Florida, it means that we are almost ready for about six months of some of the nicest Sailing conditions found anywhere. Fall here is really something to look forward to. For CMCS members, this particular Fall is going to be very special. It starts on Labor Day weekend with the Where the Wind Blows Cruise down to Naples and a very comfortable stay at the Naples Boat Club. This is an easy mile Sail down the coast and into Gordon Pass. Don't forget to watch for the Bald Eagle that sits on top of the tree as you enter. We truly live in Paradise. The weekend of Sept brings the Kayusa Cup race/cruise to South Seas Plantation. This is probably my favorite weekend of the year. For those who want to race, the fun starts at San Carlos Light and runs outside of Sanibel and Captiva up to Redfish Pass where the race ends and you head into the Five Star Resort. If you don't want to race you can actually leave on Friday and spend the whole weekend there. Between the cocktail party on the dock, the swim in the gorgeous pool overlooking Pine Island Sound and Dinner at one of the great restaurants, you should be ready for a very restful sleep nestled in your bunk at the cozy marina. The Sail home on Sunday gives you the choice of going back outside into the Gulf or, for a change of scenery, you can cruise down the Inter-coastal Waterway past St James City. In case you didn't hear about it, the Club is very seriously considering making it possible for members to register for events, renew your membership and purchase Club Merchandise on-line. The Board decided to use the Kayusa Cup as a trial to see how well it works. So join us at South Seas Plantation and try out our new, streamlined method of registering for an event. Just go to our website and click on the link. We have also been working on updating our Club Bylaws, so be on the lookout for some updates. Our September Membership Meeting will be the kickoff for our 50 th Annual Summerset Regatta, so be prepared to be wowed by the work of our committee! It is going to be Huge. 2 CMCS Chowder Chatter September, 2015 Page 2 Rear Commodore of Cruising s Report Rear Commodore-Cruising Kim Brown So how come if it is raining so much my boat looks dirty? Gary and Jean Blessing once again proved that they are the biggest Parrotheads in the club. It was a great weekend. We motored up Friday to Tween Waters in the smoothest, stillest Pine Island Sound I have ever seen. It was glass. We saw rain but it never touched us. Not Friday, Not Saturday and Not Sunday until after we got home. It rained heavily in the Gulf; it rained heavily in town but the Islands were blessed. Clearly King Neptune was pleased with the champagne. Full report elsewhere. Upcoming: Sept 4-6 Where the Wind Blows/Gypsea s in Paradise Naples Boat Club- Only the AC s are laboring this weekend- The chosen are cool in the pool. This cruise to the heart of 1% country has moved to wait list territory. I ll give a full report next month. Sept Kayusa Cup South Seas George and Pixie Noyes are leading another cruise that always fills up. This race/cruise honors the memory of Betty and Bob Kayusa. Both are missed. Cruisers can get there early and salute the hot sweaty racers from the pool with a cold drink in your hand. So 2 more chances to plug in over the summer. Rear Commodore of Racing s Report Rear Commodore Racing John Churchill 50th annual Summerset Regatta. Upcoming Racing Events After our long summer break, I am sure everyone is excited to resume racing. Our next race is a distance race, the Kayusa Cup to South Seas Resort, held in conjunction with the South Seas Cruise and is rapidly approaching. Hope to see a lot of racing participants. This will be a good warmup/shakedown prior to the Bill Misenheimer on Barefeet has graciously offered to be the finish boat. Eric Milbrandt has volunteered to be the starting boat. He could use some additional help with flags, horns and scribe duty. Please contact either me or Eric to volunteer to assist. Remember that all WFPHRF certificates expired on June 30. If you haven t renewed yet RENEW NOW! Send your new certificate to me or with your next race entry but be sure to submit it before the Kayusa Cup deadline. Rear Commodore-Racing John Churchill September 12th Kayusa Cup (BOTY) October th Annual Summerset Regatta November 7th Festival of the Islands Regatta December 5th Commodore s Cup Regatta After September- well- Summer does set at least it has for the last 49 years. By now you should have gotten your notice for Summerset. Race if you must but there is lots to entertain the Cruisers too. Remember it is Pirate Weekend on the Beach so be alert or you may catch scurvy. Aaargh! Finally, I still need a head spook for the Halloween Cruise. Raise your hand if you are interested. Fair winds, Rear Commodore Cruising Kim Brown s/v TrustMe!!!

CMCS Chowder Chatter September, 2015 Page 3 Meet Us in Margaritaville Cruise Report CMCS s fourth annual Meet Us in Margaritaville cruise began on August 14th at two-thirty (hey, it s 5 o clock somewhere!) Cruisers were welcomed with souvenir margarita glasses filled with that immortal concoction. Friday s arrivals included Chase the Clouds, Pro Re Nata, Trust Me!!!, Jazzy, Air Supply, Gopher Baroque, and an as yet unnamed boat with Glen and Paula Vetter onboard, captained by Jim Slager. His first mate, Bev, arrived by land. All settled in at Margaritaville North and got together at 5 O Clock for Buffett-inspired appetizers and more margaritas. All rose to their feet for the national anthem of Margaritaville. Some left for dinner, others just hung out. Saturday morning at 10 AM, the competition began for fabulous prizes! The first event was new this year: Flip Flop Flip, and the winners were Carol Pim and Mike Hailey. Next was a returning event: Water Balloon Catch with Bev and Jim Slager coming in first, followed by team Steve Romaine and Bob Duff. Our next event was the ever popular Fill the Margarita Glass which called upon contestants to be resourceful and inventive, using water from the Gulf to fill margarita glasses from 6 feet away. In the end, Jim and Bev came in first place. With a few modifications, Knees of my Heart Frisbee was our last game, with Bev and Bob Duff and Kristi and Jason Pim being winners. Mental Floss arrived rounding out the party goers. Tim and DeeDee Cheek arrived by motorboat Tide, with Aguileras and Tarvins onboard. Duffs welcomed their daughter and her family. Margaritaville Cruise Report (cont d) Following an afternoon of relaxing and pooling, Parrotheads gathered at the as yet unnamed boat and officially welcomed Salty Soul into the fleet, with Jim and Bev Slager providing the bubbly needed for the task. Then it was on to the dock for 5 O Clock libations, appetizers and dinner, partying in true Buffett style. Jason Pim came to the rescue of an intrepid fisherboy who was barbed by a catfish. Paramedics were called and we hope all is well with the young man. Brock and Barb Johnson arrived by land to join the fun, as did Barry and Julie Long, with guests. This year there was an added event: Accapella-oke. Sailors were challenged to choose a Buffett song and sing acapella. Mike offered his karaoke machine for next year and we will take him up on that! Buffett Trivia and Name that Buffett Tune followed with winners going away with the finest wine $3 can buy. Sunday morning, Jimmy Buffett s referenced Café du Monde opened with our own Linda Eggers preparing fresh beignets! Coffee was served and breakfast shared. It was an incredible spread. Then most boarded their vessels and headed home to their own Particular Harbor to await next year s festivities. A few boats chose to spend one more night away from their home port. Remember: We are the People our parents warned us about! Gary and Jean Blessing s/v Jazzy

CMCS Chowder Chatter September, 2015 Page 6 Betty Goodacre to receive Humanitarian Award Betty Goodacre's name is synonymous with giving, as she has given her time and tireless effort to the betterment of this community for most of her adult life. For nearly 60 years, the Windsor, Ontario native has blessed many people with her presence on Fort Myers Beach and San Carlos Island. For all her efforts within a lifetime of achievements, Goodacre is being honored on Tuesday (June 23) as the 2015 Humanitarian of the Year at the Best of the Beach Awards, presented by the Beach Observer/Beach Bulletin of Breeze Newspapers at South Beach Grille. Beach resident Betty Goodacre is seen volunteering her time at Ostego Bay Foundation Marine Science Center. She was selected 2015 Humanitarian of the Year and will be honored during a ceremony at South Beach Grille next week. Unfortunately, Goodacre's recent health issues have her recovering at Page Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Fort Myers, and she is not expected to attend the event unless she is able. "I am going to make that," she said, looking straight into this reporter's eyes with conviction. Goodacre has a laundry list of volunteer work and community service in the Beach community that would make anyone's jaw drop in amazement. To start, in no particular order, Goodacre is a recently retired Beach Fire Commissioner. She served from 1996 to 2015 (on the urging of Beach resident Betty Simpson) and won each election. On a side note, Betty had to gain her U.S. Citizenship prior to running the first time. Goodacre is also vice president of Ostego Bay Foundation, a 22-year stint so far. She has been involved since the inception of the nonprofit organization and has given waterfront tours for several years. "I have always been interested in plants, sea life and wildlife," she said. "When we started, we only had a couple of tanks for fish.". Betty Goodacre (continued) The SCI resident also is a member of the San Carlos Island Lighting District board (after being nominated by then-lee County Commissioner Ray Judah); vice president of the San Carlos Island Redevelopment Corporation (formerly the San Carlos Island Redevelopment Agency); and board member of AMIkids Southwest Florida (formerly known as the Southwest Florida Marine Institute). To show her caring level, she has attended many graduations of the nonprofit organizations' troubled students. "It's a school for kids that are too bad to stay in school but too good to put in jail," she said. "Some of them go on to college and we still try to help them. I was always interested in education." The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Daughter Cathy is a teacher at Beach Elementary and is being honored as co-teacher of the Year at the same Best of the Beach event. Betty is also an original member of the Fort Myers Beach Tarpon Hunters Club - a membership that goes way back to the late 1950s - and was one of original members of Fort Myers Beach Community Emergency Response Team. "I was in the first class. It's another service where I wanted to help people," she said. Goodacre has been a faithful member of St. Raphael Church, both with the original Episcopal faith then the offshoot Anglican faith, and served as choir director for both churches. Singing came naturally for her. Besides singing in church, the accomplished singer sang soprano as an original member of Southwest Florida Symphony Chorus that dates back to the 1960s. She also volunteered her voice at many local events that included "The Star Spangled Banner" at baseball games and fire department station dedications to "America the Beautiful" and church hymns at the Blessing of the Fleet, an event she was heavily involved in. "One year, we did 600 pounds of shrimp," she recalled. "I sang at everybody's wedding." If that is not enough, Goodacre was a Girl Scout leader for 17 years. "What gets me is that, over the past few years, all my girls who were girl scouts, have babies of their own," she said. In addition, Goodacre was the first woman commodore of Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society, a distinction she held in 1980 and again in She was also a sailing instructor who started a club on the Beach when her daughters were children.

CMCS Chowder Chatter September, 2015 Page 7 Betty Goodacre (continued) When asked if there was something missing from her long-scrolled resume, she quipped, "I don't know what else I would have time for." Goodacre history: While most people discover the tropical paradise we all reside in and visit by driving a vehicle from northern territories, Goodacre took a path less taken. In 1956, Betty, her husband Norman (who passed in 1990) daughters Cathy and Pam and a cat took a sailboat from Sarnia, Ontario to Fort Myers Beach. The trip began in Lake Huron and went through the Erie Canal, down the Hudson River and the inland waterway to the St. Lucie inlet to Lake Okeechobee and down the Caloosahatchee River to Southwest Florida. "It took us two months to get here. We left Sarnia on Sept. 17 and arrived in Fort Myers on Nov. 17," Betty said. The Goodacres moved to the Beach due to a health issue that afflicted Pam (severe asthma). "The doctor told us that we had to get her to a warmer place," she said. Doctor recommendations involved either Florida or Arizona. "You can't take a sailboat to Arizona," joked Betty. "We knew we could take a sailboat into here. But, we were the only sailboat in the area. Everybody else had shrimp boats and fishing boats." The Goodacres first stayed in beachfront accommodations -the former Dream Port Motel that was situated where Crescent Family Park currently sits - when they first came down and eventually bought a trailer and land on Oak Street on San Carlos Island. Betty's parents moved down to the area in 1963 and, with the help from Betty and Norman and the kids, built a house on the same property. Her father, who was a sailor, actually wrote a fire report called the "Sounds of Sirens" for the Beach Bulletin. He was a welder and also an instructor for a local U.S. Power Squadron station. Betty and Norman first owned a "fish camp" called Pelican Harbor, a business that was housed in the former Dock O' The Bay Bar & Grill near Hurricane Pass Bridge. They rented boats and sold provisions like beer, snacks, soda, ice cream, hamburgers and bait. Before the trailer, the Goodacres lived on their sailboat that was docked at the business. During their trailer days, Hurricane Donna swept by in 1960 and caused much damage to the area. Cathy recalls how the trailer stayed upright for the most part. Betty Goodacre (continued) "My father took a telephone pole and sunk it into the ground next to the trailer and tied the trailer to the pole," she said. "We were the only one standing on the street when Hurricane Donna came. It was smashed up pretty good, but we moved back into it eventually." In 1965, Betty's parents passed, and the Goodacres moved into the house. That is when they started an upholstery business at the Oak Street residence (zoned commercial). Betty still resides in that home at the end of the street. What really stands out is that many of the aforementioned extracurricular activities that Goodacre performed was in between tending the family business and working nights (11 p.m. to 7 a.m.) at a special duty nursing job. (Back in Canada, Goodacre went to school to become a registered nurse.) Besides Cathy and Pam, the Goodacres also welcomed another daughter (Norma) into the world while living on Fort Myers Beach. Oh, and Betty was president of the Parent Teacher Association at Cypress Lake High School (vice president when the school was built) when the kids were in school. "She was always involved in everything we did," said Cathy. "She has done it all." Betty hopes to recover soon from her illness so that she can again contribute to all the factions she has been involved in. The sedentary lifestyle at the rehabilitation center is not for her. "I've been around the world twice, to 55 countries and on four different safaris," she said. "I've been busy." Being carted around in a wheelchair is not for her. Betty was anxious to get to physical therapy. "I gotta get walking again," she said. By: BOB PETCHER, Fort Myers Beach Observer, June 17, 2015

Either would fun, and if you are the Head Spook you get to decide, SO if pumpkins, witches and goblins are your thing this is your chance to shine.
