3 CMCS Chowder Chatter January, 2019 Page 3 Commodore Bev Duff HAPPINESS IS NOT A MATTER OF EVENTS, IT DEPENDS ON THE TIDES OF THE MIND Alice Meynell Looking forward to the coming events to formally pass on the Helm of CMCS to Jason Pim as our Commodore for I have been gratified by the members who have stepped up to assume the various Committees, Officers & Directors positions. The CDC (Club Development Committee) has accomplished this task very well. Thank you, thank you many times over! This past year we have entered new waters and survived changes around us from all directions and moved forward! I have great respect and gratitude to the Board of CMCS this past year who steered a true course. We ve put many new tools in place that everyone can enjoy. Isn t it great to be able to register for races, events and activities of the club online, and also pay as needed with that tool. We are changing with the times. So many members lend their time and talents to helping us have the wonderful organization we all enjoy. The Roster of these good folks is part of the Yearbook and I hope when members get a chance to please thank them for all their efforts. At the COW (Change of Watch event) all members are welcome to attend (reservations please) to celebrate the incoming and outgoing leaders of CMCS. Awards and Recognitions will be given along with lots of food, fun and comradery. We once again have music and dancing by the Pit Bulls of the Blues led by Josh Roland. Really looking forward to a great evening! Several of us are cruising tween the holidays with many gathering at Salty Sam s Marina to welcome in This year we have a Commodore s Message membership meeting scheduled for the 15 th of January. Our own Eric Dow is speaking about the Canals of Britain. He and Dorothy enjoy a barge boat during the summer months. Reminder than we also have the Chili Cook-off on Sunday, 20 th of Jan. We are getting the heat on with lots of good cooks putting their best chili & talents on the line. As the Chowder Chatter is going to press, so is the 2019 Yearbook. Please check out your copy for all the 2019 events, races and cruises offered by CMCS. The Web Site will also have the schedule for the new years events. I salute all of you and thank you for a wonderful year as Commodore. Fair Winds & Calm Seas, Bev Duff Commodore s/v Chase the Clouds Vice Commodore of Summerset Report Vice Commodore of Summerset Allen Fiske This time of year here in beautiful Southwest Florida is when we give thanks to our Competitors and Sponsors for allowing us to make a sizeable profit that we can use to support Youth Sailing and Marine Education up and down our coastline. As I have previously outlined, we give our profits back to the communities where they came from in the same percentages. So far I have been able to present checks to the Ostego Bay Foundation ($1500), Naples Community Sailing ($500) and the Edison Sailing Center ($4000) for travel grants to their highest achieving, deserving students. 3

4 CMCS Chowder Chatter January, 2019 Page 4 4 Vice Commodore of Summerset Report A photo of the Edison Sailing Center presentations is included below. In January I will be going to the Punta Gorda Sailing Club to present three more checks, each for $300, to Learn to Sail, Charlotte Harbor Community Sailing and Charlotte Harbor Youth Sailing. In June the Edison Sailing Center will get another $4000 for 20 scholarships to their Summer Program. Allen Fiske CMCS VC of Summerset Rear Commodore-Racing s Report Rear Commodore Racing James Gallagher It s been a good year for the racing program. For example, this year we had 46 different boats compete at some point during the year. Consider that our largest single race attendance was Summerset with 27 boats, there is hope that we can one day get EVERYONE out to enjoy a fun day on the water. One of the missions was to coordinate our schedules with the six other area clubs - which we have done. We have even started some new events by running combined races - the latest - Fort Myers to Naples Offshore Race which was held on December 8 th. The eighteen boat fleet had a great start out in front of the Fort Myers pier and then finished down at the Naples pier. My boat CALUSA did our patented committee boat / competitor start. We anchor and do the official countdown, ensure that the boats cross the line properly, then we pull the anchor, pick up the start marker, and set sails! That only took three minutes and we were still in the heat of the fleet! But this move did nothing to help us win the race. The wind died about half way to Naples and we watched the boats that stayed close to shore sail away into the sunset. The line honors winner was a beautiful site there was a Swan 53 prancing around the start line and when the horn went the Swan was in Naples almost two hours in front of the bulk of the fleet. At least I know which boat I want to buy next!!!

5 DECEMBER CMCS Chowder Chatter January, 2019 Page 5 It was great to see John Finnegan out in his new boat Castaways. It s been a long hiatus after dismasting 18 months ago. In the end our club members did really well. We had Joel Andrews on Macushla first in Spin A, Brock Johnson on Vixen first in Spin B, and Tom Horner on Eroica 2 nd in Non Spin (he only lost to that big Swan!). The cruising class was dominated: 1 st was John Churchill on Nurdle, 2 nd was Diane Fowler on Windy City, and 3 rd was John Finnegan on Castaways. Congratulations to all! I look forward to seeing all of the racers out in February to enjoy the Winter Series! Watch for a Notice of Race as we finalize the details. James Gallagher Rear Commodore Racing s/v Rear Commodore of Cruising Report Rear Commodore Cruising Theresa Roake We had a successful cruising year in Even with a couple of cancellations due to weather and water issues, 43 boats went on a CMCS official cruise this year and spent nearly 260 days out on the water! Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen and participated. We look forward to seeing even more boats out in New Year s Eve at Fort Myers Beach is one for the books. Next up is the Edison Parade of Light cruise to Legacy Marina in downtown Fort Myers. Bev and Bob Duff have graciously agreed to be your hosts again in Look for more information from Bev elsewhere in the newsletter and on our website. If you d like to join us by land, please do so. Legacy also has hotel rooms at a reasonable price if you d like to join us for the weekend and walk over to the parade celebrating Thomas Edison s birthday after the oyster et al. feast. Please remember that reservations for marina slips are made with the cruise leader. This is my last missive as your Rear Commodore of Cruising. It s been fun but it s time to pass along the burgee. Thank you to all the cruise leaders and boats who helped me along the way or just came out to have a good old CMCS time. Please join me in welcoming your new Cruising Commodore Roy Malkin and his lovely vessel Blown Away. Looking forward to new adventures! That s all for now. Hope to see you out on the water in "Merci pour le bon temps!" 5 Theresa Roake s/v Lionheart and m/v Ranger
