1 The Chowder Chatter The Official Newsletter of The Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society Cape Coral / Fort Myers, Florida Next Full Moon: June 9 P.O. Box , Cape Coral, Fl June, 2017 Commodore s Message Commodore Sandy Canning & Bob Macomber been right on our nose (reminds me of Club cruises!). We have had a few days of spectacular sailing and best of all, no major boat failures (knock on wood). Your Commodore is still playing hooky in the Bahamas. I will give you an Exuma, Bahamas sailing report. It's been a bit more breezy than past trips we've made, but from what I heard from last years Bahamian bound sailors, not as windy as last year. Unfortunately, the majority of the time, those nice sailing winds have The winds have not kept us from snorkeling, diving or just having a great time. We saw swimming pigs off of Big Majors Spot and swam with a very friendly dolphin in Elizabeth Harbor, off of the "Chat N Chill" for about an hour. That was my highlight of the trip so far! I don't know if we'll make it back before the next meeting - probably shortly after. Meanwhile I will continue to frolic with the fishes (and dolphin)! Fair winds and following seas Sandy Canning Commodore Vice Commodore of Summerset Report Vice Commodore of Summerset Allen Fiske The venues are in place for the regatta, Bonita Bills for the Skippers Meeting, the Diamond Head for the Sunday night Awards Banquet and Bootleggers for the Saturday Night Cocktail Party. The only hickup is that Bootleggers is closed while they come up with possibly a new name, a new focus other than Barbeque and some remodeling. They are telling us that it will all be done by August, so we are patiently waiting to see what happens. The Pink Shell has confirmed a dockage rate of $2/ft. Salty Sams has confirmed a rate of $1.50/ft and Moss Marine is still debating but leaning on the same $150/ft as Salty's. We will have to wait a little longer to get that answer. Steve Romaine, Joe Barch and myself have taken on bringing in Sponsorships. They are coming in nicely and we are confident that we can exceed last year's totals. The most newsworthy item is that the Cape C o r a l A r t League had a contest to see which of their members could come up with a design for the Summerset T- shirt. They had quite a few entries so when our Committee went over there to pick one out, it was a challenge. Our group made a nice decision and I am attaching a copy of the result. 2 CMCS Chowder Chatter June, 2017 Page 2 Vice Commodore of Summerset Report Rear Commodore-Racing s Report I will be absent for the June and July Membership Meetings as I will be Sailing from Boston to Quebec City on a 60' wheelchair accessible catamaran called Impossible Dream. If you are interested, you can follow our journey at ( Please save $100 to put your Boat Name on the sleeve of our 52 nd Annual Summerset Regatta t-shirt. The kids that will be learning how to Sail will really appreciate it. Allan Fiske Vice Commodore of Summerset Rear Commodore-Racing s Report Rear Commodore Racing James Gallagher To Our Sailboat Racers, We had a fine evening for sailing the Jerry Pim Estebel Memorial. It has traditionally been a night race, and as Racing Commodore, I would have been in favor of running the race at night, but somehow it was moved to a 4:00 pm start prior to me being involved. I hope that next year, we push it a little closer to sunset. We had 8 boats out on the course with a strong 15 to 18 knot breeze coming from the WNW. So I chose a course that gave us more or a reach and reach rather than a long windward leeward. From SC we took off 8.5 miles to the SW to a fish haven marker DK. Ned Christensen on the fast cat Passion III was first to the mark only to discover that the mark was gone! So we proceeded around our virtual mark and raced back. Great boat speed, great weather, great sail. different story unfolded. On an overall basis, Chase the Clouds got 1 st, Passion III came in 2 nd, and Gopher Baroque came in 3 rd!!!!! There was some early results released that had Gopher Baroque placing last, but Jason finally sent me his WFPHRF and his corrected time moved the Pim boat, the boat that the race is all about, up to 3 rd overall and 2 nd in the True Cruising class. Congratulations to all three of these boats. We d love to have you out and racing on a regular basis!! Here are the rest of the results: A quick story about the committee boat. To get the race started we had my boat CALUSA anchored out by marker 2 to create the start line. And we did the whole committee boat thing - the countdown and the horn blowing. And the fleet had a nice clean start! But as soon as the horn blew I started pulling the anchor, the crew hoisted the sails and we turned CALUSA around and started racing! So with all that we were delighted with our results! A note about the boats in the race. First of all three of our committed sailboats could not race due to mechanical issues. (Miss Cathleen, Full Tilt, and Wind Star) But it was awesome to see several boats show up for their first race since last year s Estebel. SO HERE S THE CRAZY PART Chase the Clouds, Passion III, and Gopher Baroque do not race on a regular basis. In fact when I took this role I had a big list of past race boats and none of these boats were on that list. But out on the race course a much

3 CMCS Chowder Chatter June, 2017 Page 3 Rear Commodore of Cruising s Report Rear Commodore Cruising Theresa Roake Thanks to Ian Davis and Elise Missall for heading up Santweenie at Tween Waters. Despite some technical difficulties with their boat, they rose to the occasion and put on a fabulous karaoke bash. We ll keep an eye out in the Itunes store for the bootleg recordings. Thanks again for hosting and going above and beyond the call of duty! Look for Elise s report elsewhere in the Chowder Chatter. Rear Commodore of Cruising s Report After that the cruising adventures continued. We went to Danger Island over Memorial Day Weekend. Please see the article recapping that cruise elsewhere in the Chowder Chatter. Steve and I hosted the Points South Cruise May Tractors, Barefeet, Bridget O Toole and Lionheart headed south. Lionheart went straight to Panther Key on Thursday. The remaining boats headed to Factory Bay at Marco Island on Thursday. Bridget O Toole hosted a taco fiesta. Then on Friday, the rest of the boats made it down to Panther Key on the outside passage. Had a lovely Happy Hour at the beach along with the mosquitos in the evening. With the full moon, the tides were very big which seems to have brought out the bugs. On Saturday, with perfect conditions for a lovely sail, all boats except for Lionheart headed up to the mooring field at Fort Myers Beach for the weekend. The mosquitos left and Lionheart had a lovely few days on the hook. The mosquitos returned on Monday so Lionheart headed on home via motorsail. Mark your calendars! June 15-18, we head to Fisherman s Village for Father s Day. Bev and Bob Duff are hosting this event. We head to Pelican Bay on Thursday to decompress and on Friday to Fisherman s Village for the weekend. There are all kinds of great things to do while we re there. Please see the filer elsewhere in the Chowder Chatter for details. Please contact Bev Duff at argusgdn@comcast.net for dockage. The cruises just keep on coming. For 4 th of July, we re having the Innie-Outie Cruise at the Cape Coral Yacht Club, July 2-4. Lots of fun activities planned including the first CMCS Boat-In movie! Steve and I will be your hosts for the Innie portion of this cruise and the Blessings will be the hosts for the Outie portion on the actual 4 th. Please contact Jim Lasorella for dockage reservations. Information on activities is in the flier elsewhere in the Chowder Chatter. That s all for now. Hope to see you out on the water. 4 CMCS Chowder Chatter June, 2017 Page 4 Membership and Recruitment Membership and Recruitment Chairperson waters. AHOY CMCS members! S u m m e r i s h e r e! At the May meeting there were several guests who visited us. A Couple of applications went home with these guests so hopefully more of the CMCS burgees will be flying on boats in local I m pleased to welcome Denise Allen & Tim Fountaine to our ranks. Allen and Denise are on the lookout for a sail boat. They are enjoying the local waters in their run about and are ready for something a little larger. Kristy Knupp joined us at the meeting and indicated she is interest in cruising with us. Will probably see her on their boat at the Memorial Weekend cruise at Pelican Bay over the Memorial Holiday. Thank you all for wearing your CMCS name tags to the meetings and other functions. It is so helpful for us to get to know one another! The best way to get to know others in the club is to attend the functions we offer throughout the year! Looking at June, we are meeting at Pelican Bay in the area of Cayo Costa for the Memorial Weekend festivities. Fisherman s Village Cruise is mid June over Father s Day weekend. Pool at the end of the dock and cool beverages close at hand. These are opportunities to get to know each other. Look forward to seeing the CMCS flying over our waters! Fair Winds, Bev Duff, Membership and Recruitment Chairperson burgees DANGER ISLAND 2017 Brave CMCS pirates invaded Danger Island (aka Pelican Bay) over Memorial Day Weekend. Boats arriving on Friday were Alborada, Ambiance, Avanti, Between the Sheets, Bridget O Toole, Four Seasons, Jolly Mon, Lazy Susan, Lionheart, Windswept and Zydeco. We kept 2 grills pretty busy at our grill night at the beach with lots of good food shared. It s been awhile since we grilled at the beach; I forgot how fun it can be. In true pirate fashion, I Sheet You Knot arrived in the cover of darkness Friday night so as to avoid detection. On Saturday morning at promptly 10am play commenced at the annual Black Tie Croquet Tournament hosted by Bev and Bob Duff. The Duffs created a wonderful challenging course this year with one doozy of a sea grass trap toward the end of the course. Although intense competition ensued, Steve Roake prevailed and is the Black Tie Croquet Champion of Lots of great black ties were worn. While we were playing croquet at the spit at the entrance to Pelican Bay we were able to welcome Calusa and Salty Soul as they sailed by to join the fun for the rest of the weekend. We really moved in at the beach with chairs, umbrellas, sun shelters, and coolers packed to the brim. A rousing game of Bocce followed the Croquet. Most retired to their boat for part of the afternoon to rest up for our namesake event of the year. Saturday evening, we held the traditional CMCS Chowder Contest. If you call it chowder, it s chowder. We had all kinds of chowder and yummy food. We had to taste everything a few times before voting for the Grand Champion. Big drumroll please: The 2017 Chowder Champion is Ms. Linda Raymond of Zydeco with her West Indian Peanut Chowder. I think some of us would have liked to lick the pan clean. Her name will be engraved on the Chowder Champion trophy for all to admire.

5 CMCS Chowder Chatter June, 2017 Page 5 DANGER ISLAND 2017 A couple of years ago, we started voting with $1 bills. Proceeds go to Friends of Cayo Costa whose members volunteer and contribute to one of our favorite cruising destinations. This year, we raised $115 for this worthy cause. Thanks to everyone who made chowder and start thinking about next year! On Sunday morning, some dinghied to the Tunnel of Love. The tide was high enough; all were able to make it through without portage and enjoy some time at the beach. Others headed to Cabbage Key for an early lunch. Thanks to Jay and Kathy Light for calling ahead so that we avoided the ferry crowd. As we sat down to lunch, we watched the boats and the people just keep coming and coming. We heard later that the restaurant served 880 lunches on Saturday, 950 lunches on Sunday, and on Monday they ran out of food. The remaining cruisers enjoyed the beach or just relaxed on their boats. Happy Hour was at Dog Beach. Some boats stayed on Monday and some headed for other parts. Thanks to everyone who came, brought wonderful things to share, helped set up and clean up and brought a good time. A special thanks goes to the Weather Gods who brought us lots of sunshine and cool breezes. When s the last time we had a northerly on Memorial Day? What a great weekend! 7 CMCS Chowder Chatter June, 2017 Page 7 This weekend is a favorite of many CMCS cruisers and racers. The cruise starts on Friday and the race is held on Sunday. As with many events, surprises always enter into the mix. Cruise leaders Ian Davis and Elise Missall had full intentions of arriving by boat, but due to an engine problem discovered on Thursday we had to arrive by car. Getting up to Tween Waters around noon on Saturday we found that not every boat had arrived yet and so we positioned ourselves at the pool to be on the lookout for sailors. San Tweenie Cruise By mid to late afternoon we had the following boats secured in their slips: Buffy, Calusa, Chase the Clouds, Crystal Daze, Full Tilt, I Sheet U Knot, Jazzy, Miss Cathleen, ProReNata, Salty Soul and Windy City, all with assorted crew. And some crew members, including racing crew arrived by car later in the day due to previous commitments. Folks spent the day at the pool sipping refreshments or walking the beach, with some just hanging out on their boats reading. The long awaited Happy Hour began at 5ish with great appetizers which eventually morphed into a sumptuous Potluck dinner. And let the Karaoke contest begin! Folks were a little hesitant at first until they realized it was not the Academy San Tweenie Cruise Awards or The Voice, but rather a group of sailors making loud noises and having fun! We had incredible prizes for all categories, and some categories had ties! Glenn Diedricksen started off with House of the Rising Sun followed by Scott Milligan and Eric Milbrandt with Elvira. Bill Debruin, a guest on Windy City, sang These Boots Were Made for Walking with female stomping assistance. Other outstandings singers were Patrick O Keefe with Summertime, James Gallagher, Gary Blessing and Diane Fowler. There were many other great contestants, but these are all that our memory can account for as Ian was working the machine and I was trying to keep track of the many singers and the order in which they wanted to be heard. Yes, CMCS singers really got into the spirit of the moment. As we had to leave Saturday evening, we have no information of the race on Sunday, other than Miss Cathleen was dismasted. Not a good thing at all A beautiful CMCS weekend with warm temps, a nice breeze and good friends. Ian Davis Captain, Elise Missall Crew s/v Windstar
