3 CMCS Chowder Chatter February, 2018 Page 3 Johnson) Commodore Bev Duff Commodore s Message The essence of a good seaman is one who can, in accordance with the old definition, hand, reef, and steer ~ one who knows what he s doing about the boat, and does it enthusiastically, while anticipating what he might need to do next. (Robin Knox- out the CREW roster for those able bodied sailors. February is also the EPOL (Edison Pageant of Light) parade and OysterFest. The article in the Chowder Chatter & the WEB Site give the particulars. Reservations with payment are a must for this event. We have limited dockage at Legacy Marina which is waiting list now. Please check out the prices and dates for the rest of the function. How s that for an opener not unlike life and constant juggling! After a very full and fun December and January, I m ready for some boat time! Chase is on the ready at all times. Many thanks to Elise Missall for helming the Annual Awards Dinner & Dance. It was a lovely evening! Liberty Ashore gals, Wendy Cook & Julie Long are to be congratulated for a fun event at the Chili Cook-off. We all ate way too much chili & other goodies! The February membership meeting is our Member Appreciation event. It s the time for our committees to strut their stuff. Speaking of which, we still need some volunteers to take over some positions of Clubhouse Programs, Fleet Recruiter & Membership, Public Relations & Storekeeper(s). Our new Racing Program begins in February with the Winter Series races each Saturday. Check out the WEB Site on our Racing program. The more the merrier in racing. We have many members who may not race their boat, or have access to boats however are looking to crew with others. Captains please check My philosophy with CMCS is that IF you can t find something that interests, you re not really looking to get involved. Look forward to meeting and greeting everyone in February. See you on the water! Bev Duff Commodore Vice Commodore of Summerset Report Vice Commodore of Summerset Allen Fiske Not much to report this month except that I am putting together my Committee and could use some help with someone to coordinate the details of the 3 main events, Friday Night Skippers Meeting at Bonita Bills, Saturday Night Party at Salty Sam s and the Sunday Night Dinner at the Diamond Head. Help would greatly be appreciated! Allen Fiske Vice Commodore Summerset 3

4 CMCS Chowder Chatter February, 2018 Page 4 Rear Commodore of Cruising Report Rear Commodore-Racing s Report 4 Rear Commodore Cruising Theresa Roake 2018 is going to be a great year for Cruising! We hope for fair winds and calm seas. We ve scheduled our cruises for the year. Many are the same destinations we ve all grown to love. It will be a mix of anchoring out and some marina destinations, especially for those months when we like to plug in for the A/C. Although we haven t really needed it in January! Thanks again to Carolyn Wilson and Dan Green for hosting the CMCS New Year s festivities at Fisherman s Village. A great time was had by all. The fireworks were spectacular. First up on the CMCS Cruising calendar is Edison Pageant of Light (EPOL) February at Legacy Marina in downtown Fort Myers. Bev and Bob Duff have graciously agreed to build on last year s success and are the Leaders for this cruising tradition. Slips are full but contact Bev if you d like to be put on the waiting list. Don t forget to deck out your boats with white lights in honor of Mr. Edison s birthday. If you are unable to come by boat, please consider coming up by land for the Oyster Feast and the parade. After that, it s on to Pelican Bay March 9-11 for some time on the hook. For the past couple of years this cruise has had the most boats in attendance. We all can t wait to get out cruising after some of those cold fronts! Hope to see you out on the water. Rear Commodore Racing James Gallagher Winter Series Regatta $20 per race. As I hope you all know, we are offering a Winter Series, 5 days of racing, 5 Saturday s in a row, starting Jan. 27 and running through February. Plenty of room - motor the short distance to Salty Sam s and have a beer. First drink is on the club! Races start at 10:00 on Jan 27, Feb 3, 10, 17 and 24 Classes will include the normal WFPHRF but there will also be a non-rated class for beginners (so if you never raced but want to try, here is your chance) My boat, CALUSA will be committee boat check channel 72 day of the race for details on the course somewhere in front of Fort Myers Beach. 5 CMCS Chowder Chatter February, 2018 Page 5 DECEMBER Membership and Recruitment Membership and Recruitment Chairperson Bev Duff AHOY CMCS members! Oh my goodness, I find myself writing two columns today. We are in full stride for 2018 with renewals behind us and lots of new sailors wanting to make CMCS their new organization of choice. The 2018 Yearbook is available at all the events and functions of our new year. The February membership meeting is the last time they appear before being mailed at a great expense. Welcome to new members who have just joined CMCS: Jolyn Kuhn, attended the January meeting as well as the Chili Cook-off and decided CMCS is the group for her. Welcome Jolyn, joining as a Crew so we look forward to getting you on a boat real soon. Dani Johnson attended the January meeting and also decided that CMCS is the club for her and her spouse Elizabeth Johnson. Liz attended the Chili Cook-off with an entry if I recall correctly. They learned about CMCS via our WEB site. They are world travelers and look forward to checking out the boating waters here in SW Florida. Welcome gals! Will be getting the 2018 Yearbook packets to our newest members shortly. Thank you, all members, for wearing your CMCS name tags to the meetings and other functions. This sailing Gal is moving onto other duties within CMCS. I ve really enjoyed hosting the Fleet Recruiter position and encourage anyone to take the position if they want to meet everyone in the Club. I look forward to greeting everyone from the head podium as I m be helming CMCS as the 2018 Commodore. Please don t be shy about putting your talents forward for CMCS. Our volunteer Members are what make CMCS so special. Look forward to seeing all the CMCS burgees on our waterways. Fair Winds, Bev Duff, Fleet Recruiter LIBERTY ASHORE Liberty Ashore Chairpersons Wendy Cook and Julie Long Mardi Gras Chili Cook-off! WOW! The Mardi Gras Chili Gods provided us with the perfect day for the Cook-off! Warm enough that we didn t have to wear sweaters (gasp-what are those?), but nice and breezy enough in the CCYC Pavilion so that we could enjoy the fruits of the 15 Chili Chefs without breaking a sweat!! It was a great event to start up 2018! Many thanks to all the innovative Chefs: Bev & Bob Duff, Kim & Judy Brown, Sandy Canning, Deedee Cheek, Theresa Roake, Sue Stier, Gordan Coffman, Beth Johnson, Diane Fowler & Roger Wood, Wayne Canning & Teresa Scott, Roseanne Hoffman, Gail & Houston Jones, Carolyn Preston, Christy & Jason Pim (and their beautiful masked daughters), and Rich & Jolyn Kuhn. We had 75+ voters at the party, and they enjoyed a myriad of wonderful chili flavors! And, combined with the sides and desserts that the non-chili-cooks contributed, we all went home happily and contentedly full! 5

9 CMCS Chowder Chatter February, 2018 Page 9 Removal of Chiquita Lock delayed by Irma Chiquita Lock The City of Cape Coral's attempt to remove the Chiquita Lock meanders on. Most recently they filed for an extension of their request with FDEP, so that they have more time to work with their consultant and strengthen their case before the department rules on the permit. So far they have not made a very good case on how exactly removing the lock would improve boater safety OR how to properly mitigate the negative environmental effects it will likely have. (or how about retaining irrigation water during a time we are vastly expanding that system???). Originally set for a decision on Jan 15, the new deadline is March 5 with FDEP. Concerned citizens are encouraged to contact the mayor and city council members with their feedback and ask the city to withdraw their application. The other part of this project (with a more imminent timeline), is the City's permit for a dredge with the Army Corps of Engineers. The public period to comment on that closes Feb 2. The ACOE has determined that the project may adversely affect manatees and smalltooth sawfish critical habitat. The notice is available here and comments should be submitted in writing to the attention of the District Engineer through the Fort Myers Permits Section, 1520 Royal Palm Square Boulevard, Suite 310, Fort Myers, Florida Lake Okeechobee Discharges Even more importantly for our coast, there is a concerted "Now or Neverglades" effort going on this week by hundreds of FL organizations such as Captains for Clean Water, Everglades Trust, etc. to try and put immense public pressure on Governor Scott to step in and ensure that South Florida Water Management District properly designs the EAA reservoir as envisioned by SB10. In short, powerful forces continue to fight against the "optimal configuration" of the reservoir that SB10 calls for. Please take a minute to contact Governor Scott's office today, and urge him to cancel leases on 18,000 acres of taxpayer land (our land) immediately so we can have a reservoir that will actually stop the Lake O discharges that have been so harmful to both coasts. gladesdeclaration.org/help-now/ Jason Pim CMCS Legislative Committee (& Vice Commodore)

10 CMCS Chowder Chatter February, 2018 Page 10 Fire Extinguisher Recall! Capt. Diane Fowler just passed on a bit of very relative information which we should all check out. THE CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION (CPSC) REPORTS: 10 The Kidde corporation has recalled 40 million fire extinguishers. Kidde is the most common marine fire extinguisher sold in the United States. There is a good chance that you have one or more of these units on your boat. This recall is for plastic top Kidde fire extinguishers produced between the dates of January 1, 1973 and October 25, The nozzles can clog and fail to activate and have also detached with enough force to cause a hazard. Kidde is providing free replacements with metal tops. We urge you to check your fire extinguishers and see if they are covered by the recall. Go to Kidde s Product Safety Recall webpage, and follow their instructions to obtain your free replacement.
