1 The Chowder Chatter The Official Newsletter of The Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society Cape Coral / Fort Myers, Florida Next Full Moon: July 12 P.O. Box , Cape Coral, Fl Commodore s Message We had a record attendance at Danger Island this year -30 boats participated! The sand spit at the entrance to Pelican Bay was loaded with colorful a w n i n g s a n d u m b r e l - las. (See article). I would especially like the NEWER folks to know that the presentation Commodore of chowder done by the Diane Fowler Hazens and the Staffords was the way it USED TO BE in the olden days! Also, this event had a GOVERNOR: we joined when Bob Macomber was Gov. and he passed the torch to Russell & Kathleen Vance, who did a GREAT job for years! This position is OPEN for 2015 folks! Susan & John Reekie did a great job this year; but when you are the Gov - you MAKE THE RULES!! You want to rule on a line call during "black tie croquet" - DO IT! You want to arrange funny prizes and get matching T-shirts for the worker bees - DO IT! Let's have someone STEP UP to the plate & bring back some early traditions, please. Also, we hosted the Ladies Day Race / Drag Queen Contest. Aboard Windy City, we had an adorable couple that just bought a house from me on Friday. I asked, "What are you doing tomorrow?" Since they replied, "Nothing" - they were recruited and did a fabulous job! Steven is the beauty in the black afro & polka dot top. Also in the photo, is newer member Ben Cournoyer, who did flips between the shrouds!! Kathleen Vance helmed; and GUESS WHO is the other beauty queen in the long green dress??? 10 boats signed up, 8 raced, the winds were light but built up to 6-8K for a FABULOUS sail home. HUGE fun party at our house followed; where we watched Ray's video extravaganza!! A profit was made for the club! Former CMCS Member, Linda Easterly, passed away June 9, after a long illness and double lung transplant. She & Bob were married over 40 years & moved back to CO last year to enjoy family. We miss them both. Looking ahead into July, we have the Franklin Locks Cruise coming up, as well as the club cruise / picnic. As always, I look for your suggestions to make this club what YOU WANT it to be! me anytime! My goal is to get as many folks involved as possible. Big smiles for everyone! Stay safe this summer + when you see black clouds - REEF EARLY!! Wishing you a wonderful month of lazy summer days and refreshing pool swims, Commodore Diane 2014 CMCS Officers Commodore: Diane Fowler Vice Commodore: Allen Fiske Vice Commodore Summerset: Steve Romaine Rear Commodore Cruising: John Reekie Rear Commodore Racing: Stan Dale Fleet Yeoman Diane Pfaff Fleet Purser Bill Cook Past Commodore Bev Duff Chowder Chatter Editor Steve Roake

2 Page 2 Rear Commodore of Racing s Report Rear Commodore Racing Stan Dale CMCS hosted the 2014 Lady s Day race on June 7 th. The annual event is designed to showcase the sailing skills of our lady skippers. All crew duties for the day are satisfied by men. As an added element of entertainment, the crew are encouraged to show off their more feminine side as they sport the latest in female fashion. Two races were completed as the winds turned light and boats headed off to join the after-race festivities at Commodore Diane s home. Please see our club website for Race Results and Entry Forms and Notice of Race on all CMCS Races. Reminder WFPHRF certifications expire on June 30 th WFPHRF renewal certifications are due to the race committee prior to the next scheduled event. Stan Dale Rear Commodore Racing West Florida PHRF Annual Meeting The WFPHRF Annual Meeting and BOTY Awards Presentation will be held on Saturday, June 28, beginning at 2:00 PM at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. WEST FLORIDA PHRF NEWS All WFPHRF racing certificates expire at the end of June each year. This year, the Board of Directors of WFPHRF has announced some significant rules changes regarding handicaps. These changes will reportedly become effective with renewals effective July 1. Some of the changes (this might not be a complete list) are as follows: First, the spinnaker and racer cruiser classes will no longer obtain credits for roller furling equipment. Furthermore they will not be allowed credits for reduction in headsail area nor will they receive credits for hank- on jibs or propeller style. Second, non-spinnaker boats will see the elimination of any propeller credits and elimination of roller furling (R/F) credits if the boat was designed with a roller furling system. Third, true cruising/pocket cruiser and multi-cruisers will see the reduction of credits for a number of items such as part time deployment of a dodger, propane tank credits and other hard to quantify items that are presently in place. Furthermore sail age credits have been modified to begin five (5) years after date of build. Also we will be consistent with our application of R/F credits and eliminate the credit for boats that were designed with a R/F system. Furthermore we have reduced the credit to six (6) sec. a mile for in boom furling. Finally, in an effort to assure that the boats in true cruising/pocket cruiser meet the intent of the class the board has redefined its definition. It will require that sail area to displacement ratio meet a standard that we believe will ensure actual cruising boats are competing in this class. 4 Page 4 Vice Commodore Summerset s Report Vice Commodore- Summerset Steve Romaine Sail the Tradition has a marvelous 49 year history, with thousands of sailors over the years enjoying the experience. The Summerset Regatta, the oldest continuous regatta in Southwest Florida, is quite special. What makes Summerset so exceptional? The following is my take on what makes it that way, from a guy who has participated in hundreds of regattas from Maine to Florida, in Europe, and in eighteen Summersets. Venue: Summerset is Gulf racing off Fort Myers Beach, where we can easily draw yachts from the north and south. Convenient, inexpensive dockage is available at or near the shore side activities. Amenities of the Pink Shell Resort: A close inand-out to the race course for participants. Fabulous poolside cocktail party with lots of free beer and hors d ouevres, followed by a highquality banquet dinner at a good value to guests. In 2013 we had great participation in both of these events, with 340 attending the cocktail party and 158 enjoying the awards banquet. Distance race as part of the Regatta: Not only for racers, but a shorter coastal race for cruising boats. Camaraderie of skippers and crews: This is evident throughout the event but never more than at the Bonita Bills Skippers Meeting, where unlimited free pizza and beer flows to approximately 150 guests. Generous Sponsors: 160 in all, enable us to keep the costs down and our contributions to youth sailing high. So much support that US Sailing recognized CMCS in 2012 with a National Award for Organizational Support. This would not have been possible without the contributions of community businesses, our members, members of area boat clubs, and entries to the Regatta strong in That number makes us the largest PHRF Regatta on Florida s Southwest coast. A+ PRO: We are fortunate to have professional race management for the Summerset Regatta. Our event is scored for three Boat of the Year areas. Options for participants to stay ashore: Several options are available to stay in local motels or at the Pink Shell Resort, at special prices. Vice Commodore Summerset s Report (cont d) Attention to Detail: Special racing trophies (distance and overall), a cool T-shirt designed by a local artist, door prizes for every boat, great raffle prizes, unique skippers bag with goodies, music, video, photos and super merchandise for sale. Our Regatta has been on TV and gets dozens of photos in local magazines. The Summerset Regatta is a premier event for our area. If you re a CMCS member or have participated before, you will be receiving your entry/nor form in about five weeks. Entry forms and further information can also be found on the Summerset Regatta website, In the meantime, save the dates of October 10 th 12 th. Plan on being a sponsor, or volunteer to help. This year is going to be the best yet. Your fifteenmember committee has been planning and working hard to make sure you enjoy the 49 th Summerset Regatta. Summerset Raffle Tickets are already available from Suzanne Aguilera. See the flyer in this newsletter for information on how to obtain yours! Do you have any Dacron sails to donate to Summerset? If you do, please contact me and I will pick them up from you. We will get them to Ella Vickers, Inc., and they will be converted into great door prizes. Thanks! It s not too early to begin thinking about the 50th anniversary Summerset Golden Jubilee in 2015! Planning has already begun! It s gonna be HUGE! Charles and Judy Tomlins Ladies Bridge Club Ladies Bridge Club Rose Ann Hoffman Ladies Bridge Club upcoming events: June-July-August Summer Hiatus Sept. ECHO Technology Tour - make water clean Oct. 18 River Romp - Edison Sailing Center Nov Rosie's Knots Dec. 3 Holiday Party & Pirate Swap (Need host house) Rose Ann Hoffman News from Bill and Mary Misenheimer Barefeet was launched with a new bottom at the end of May in St. Mary's GA. While waiting out a cold front with knot winds from the NE, we took the ICW to Brunswick, GA. Brunswick Landing Marina is a great stop for cruisers with over 300 slips and FREE laundry! Our next stop was Charleston, SC, where we anchored across the Ashley River from the Megadock, since Barefeet is not a mega yacht. From Charleston we had great sailing with overnight stops at Winyah Bay and the Cape Fear River. The Cape Fear River and Snow's Cut go to Wrightsville Beach, avoiding the offshore Frying Pan Shoals. We cleaned the salt off the boat at Sea Path Yacht Club which has a loaner car for provisioning and West Marine. The next leg was offshore to Beaufort, NC, then up the ICW to Oriental. The 32-year old depth sounder decided to give it up in North Carolina, so it was replaced at Sailcraft in Oriental with a short haul and overnight in the slings. We would highly recommend this yard. The sounds and rivers in this part of NC can provide some great sailing which is a relief from motoring in the ICW. A late afternoon thunderstorm after leaving Albemarle Sound reminded us of summer weather in Florida with 37 knots of wind, frequent lightning and waves over the bow in the shallow North River. After a stop in Coinjock, NC, for mail from home, we motored through the ICW to Virginia and the Great Bridge lock. This is a good stop also with free dock and provisioning nearby. Norfolk is 11 miles north of Great Bridge, and we are currently anchored just north of Norfolk in Old Point Comfort near Hampton, VA. on June 22nd. The marina here was previously for military use only, and is now open to the public. We will be heading up the Chesapeake in the next couple of days. Mary and Bill s/v Barefeet

6 Page 6 Fisherman s Village Cruise Recap Ho Hum! Just another beautiful day sailing the ICW was how the Fisherman s Village cruise began. Three sailing craft migrated to the serene waters of Pelican Bay for an evening of quiet and beverages. Chase the Clouds, Kestrel II & Sail-La-Vie all enjoyed the first day of the cruise until thund e r s t o r m s swept through the anchorage around 10 pm just enough to stir the boats 360 and cooled the air. More Cruise Pictures! Mid morning found us sailing up Charlotte Harbor to destination Fisherman s Village Marina where the staff are always ready to lend a hand to tie our boats safely into their slips. We were joined shortly by Trust Me so now we numbered 4 adventurers. The days were spent exploring The Village Mall, relaxing by the pool, and eating and drinking ourselves into a more relaxed state. With the Day Room at our disposal we enjoyed a Pot Luck supper Thursday evening and Friday we grilled our fare. The cruise leaders brought along a game to test our boating and navigation knowledge (which proved to be a challenge) into the night time hours. There were some rain clouds but nothing to really dampen our spirits. As it was Marina Days at Fisherman s Village we were treated to a hot dog roast and gathering on Saturday afternoon for those who remained. We headed home Sunday early, again sailing in Charlotte Harbor. However, the SE wind was true to form ~ on the nose the majority of the trip once we turned south at marker 74 ICW. Chase arrived at her slip at 1400 hrs just before the skies opened up and Mother Nature rinsed her well. We had managed to off load and headed home by the time the rains started. Aha, another wonderful CMCS cruise in our wake. Many thanks to the participants for sharing the trip with us. Bob & Bev Duff of Chase the Clouds Danger Island 2014
