2 SUMMERSET 2011 STEVE ROMAINE CHAIRMAN The 46 th Summerset Regatta is history. All reports indicate everyone had a good time at the parties and Oh! Yes.. the wind was great for racing. The National Weather Channel contacted us just before the weekend and wanted us to go on the air to comment on how bad it was going to be, and discuss our foul weather plan for heavy rain and wind. We declined, and suggested they send Jim Cantore to go out on our press boat Saturday morning, observe the weather conditions, and video STEVE ROMAINE SRO- MAINE294@YAHOO.COM summerset racing. As it turns out, the winds, in the knot range were great for racing with minimum rain. The rains came in the evenings, forcing us to move the Saturday poolside cocktail party indoors. Big Deal It was fun! Jim Cantore SHOULD HAVE come! We could have shown him a fun cocktail party with beer flowing, steel drum music by Dave LaPio, Hor s D ouvres galore including 75 lbs of shrimp donated by Beach Seafood Restaurant, and thousands of dollars in door prizes distributed. This is how CMCS does it!! In summary, this year s Summerset drew more boats, had more sponsors, had more door prize contributors, larger skippers meeting, more sailors and sponsors attend the cocktail party and more attendees at the banquet dinner. We spent more but received more, enabling us to contribute more to youth sailing. This could not have been possible without the steadfast support of our membership, sponsors, visiting boats, our great Summerset Committee, volunteer help of guests, Race Committee, and employees of Bonita Bill s and the Pink Shell Resort. Thank you ALL... so much! I ask only one thing of our membership now. Please patronize our sponsors. They can be found listed in this Chowder Chatter, and also on CMCS-SAIL.ORG and SUMMERSETREGATTA.COM. These wonderful folks have been very supportive of our major Regatta, some for many years. The least we can do is support these reputable companies. Save the date: October 6 th & 7 th, 2012 for the 47 th Summerset Regatta same venue at Fort Myers Beach. Hoping you all had as much fun as I did this year! Happy Sailing! Steve Summerset 50% UV Shirts Still Available There are a few of the 2011 long sleeve microfiber shirts still available for purchase. There are 2 small, 3 medium, 3 large and 3 extra large shirts still available. If you are interested contact Cindy Carlino. 2

3 RACING NEWS We re back into the racing season in a big way! With Summerset behind us, we still have two more regattas before the end of the year! Let s get everyone out for a great season finale! Both events count towards the Buoy Series championship! The next race will be The Festival of the Islands Regatta on November 5. After the races there will be a social gathering at Bonita Bill s beginning at 5:00 PM. This will be a joint party with the Matanzas Cruisers. Be sure to tell your crew about this well in advance so they can plan to attend as well! See further details elsewhere in the Chowder Chatter. The final race of the year will be the Commodore s Cup on December 3 followed by a social at the Yacht Club. Rear Commodore of Racing The Summerset Regatta was a HUGE success! Steve Romaine did a fantastic job planning and organizing this event! Its success was the result of Steve Romaine s tremendous efforts and those of his committee. Their efforts raised funds to help youth sailing in the region. Thanks to everyone for a job well done! Steve Roake Short of a hurricane forecast, the weather forecast couldn t have looked much worse! We cheated the weatherman both days! Contrary to forecasts of big winds and rain, we had near-perfect racing conditions both days with easterly breezes, calm seas and NO rain! There were thirty nine boats entered in seven sections. This year, the True Cruising Division dominated the entries with 17 boats, followed by 10 entries in the Spinnaker Division (including 3 DNC s), 8 entries in the Non-Spinnaker Division and 4 entries in the Multi-Hull Division. Summerset Results were as follows: Regatta Results: Multi-Hull Division: first - Aquilla (Paul Perisho), second - Passion III (Ned Christensen); third Triumph (Erik Soronen). Spinnaker Division A: first - Midnite Rider (Forrest Banks); second T Bone (Jason Richards), Third Macushla (Joel Andrews). Spinnaker Division B: first Blew By U II (Jacek Wierzbick), second - Blue Bayou (Kevin Wensley), third SROFM (Kurt Martin). Non-Spinnaker Division A: first Fancy Free (Jerry Poquette), second Air Supply (Steve Romaine), third Essence (Paul McDill). Non-Spinnaker Division B: first - Desperado (Cecil Hazen), second Fair Trade (Joe Martinez), third Bentley (Tom Horner). True Cruising Division A: first Jabu (Rex Goode), second Jolly Mon (David Naumann), third Panache (Dayton Doney). True Cruising Division B: first Laura Li (Arnie Pfalz), second Blue Skye (Michael Smith), third Wicked Wicked Ways (Roger Horton). Results of the Sunday Coastal Distance Race event: Multi-Hull Division: first - Aquilla (Paul Perisho), second Triumph (Erik Soronen); third Passion III (Ned Christensen). Spinnaker Division A: first - Midnite Rider (Forrest Banks); second T Bone (Jason Richards), Third Macushla (Joel Andrews). Spinnaker Division B: first Blew By U II (Jacek Wierzbick), second - Blue Bayou (Kevin Wensley), third SROFM (Kurt Martin). Non-Spinnaker Division A: first Air Supply (Steve Romaine), second Essence (Paul McDill), third Vakalele (Richard Lancaster). Non-Spinnaker Division B: first - Desperado (Cecil Hazen), second Bentley (Tom Horner), third After You (Gary Blessing). True Cruising Division A: first Panache (Dayton Doney), second Saboutime (John Harkness), third Jolly Mon (David Naumann). True Cruising Division B: first Wicked Wicked Ways (Roger Horton), second Euphoria (Edward Brauer), third Laura Li (Arnie Pfalz). A very special thanks to Jeff Butzer and Gene Fuller for their work as the PRO s for this regatta. Also a special thanks to Jeff Butzer, Steve Kimball & Wendy King for providing the signals boats and to Russ & Pam Green and Steve & Theresa Roake for serving as mark boats. Carol Robinson served as our Chief Judge. Fortunately, there were no protests or requests for redress, making her job easy Summerset was the last race in the CMCS Distance Series. The series consisted of four events: San T Weenie; Estebel Night Race; Kayusa Cup; and the Summerset Distance Race. The scheduled Estebel Night Race was abandoned due to weather. Even though the race was resailed on a different date, it was not scored in the series pursuant to our rules. The standings are based on the best two out of three races. Racers had to participate in two races to qualify, and could throw out one race out of the three. In the Spinnaker division Forrest Banks Midnite Rider was first and Joel Andrews Macushla was second. In the Non-Spinnaker Division Cecil Hazen s Desperado was first, Steve Romaine s Air Supply was second and Tom Horner s Bentley was third. In the True Cruising Division Roger Horton s Wicked Wicked Ways was first, David Naumann s Jolly Mon was second, and Dan Merriman s Air Boss was third. In the Multi-Hull division Ned Christensen s Passion III was first and Erik Soronen s Triumph was second. The Distance Series awards will be presented at the Change of Watch dinner in January. Two race events remain in the Buoy Series. Series results will be announced after the final event (Commodore s Cup). The Buoy Series awards will be presented at the Change of Watch dinner in January. The Kayusa Cup is a perpetual trophy awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in the Kayusa Cup Distance Race to South Seas Resort on Captiva Island. This year s recipient is Robert Libbey s Anhinga. The trophy will be presented at the Change of Watch Dinner in January. The trophy resides in the club s trophy case in the Cape Coral Yacht Club. 4 RACING NEWS continued from Page 3 It s time to renew your WFPHRF certificate! Certificates are valid from July 1 to June 30. Renew now on-line while you re thinking about it so you ll be ready for racing in the fall especially Summerset! Avoid the last-minute rush! Remember that our rules state that you can race in only one event without a valid WFPHRF certificate using a provisional handicap. After that, the provisional handicap is penalized 10 sec/mile until evidence of your application or renewal is provided. Some of our racers hadn t renewed their membership in WFPHRF prior to the last event. Better do it now or you will be penalized in future regattas! In case you didn t know, I m your local WFPHRF handicap committee representative. If you have any questions, problems or concerns regarding the handicapping process, please feel free to contact me. I ll try to assist you in any way I can. It s not too early to begin thinking about 2012! I ve already completed the racing calendar! If anyone has any suggestions for next year s racing program, please bring these to my attention as soon as possible. These ideas might include changes to the Sailing Instructions, awards, additional racing events, racing seminars, social events and skippers meetings, and more! It s also not too early to begin thinking about volunteering to be the race committee chairman!!! I d like to have someone on board early so they can get a feel for what s involved. The ideal candidate would be a non or former racer with a powerboat, although sailboats work just about as well. The only benefit to the powerboat is its nimbleness in setting and retrieving marks as well as changing courses when the wind shifts (as it often does in the winter!) Anyone with an interest that would like to learn more, Please feel free to contact me! Come out with us once to see what s involved! It s not boring, as you might think, and it s a great way to spend the day on the water and take in some sailboat racing up close! For those of you who like to plan ahead, the date of the Chili Cook-Off Race and social, originally scheduled for Saturday, January 21, 2012, has been changed to Saturday, January 14, Please make a note of it! ACTION NEEDED: Members of CMCS sign up to man the CMCS booth for two hours and get in the Fort Myers Boat show free. When: Nov th. 10 A.M. - 6 P.M. Where: Harborside Event Center & City Yacht Basin. Contact: Bill Misenheimer at to reserve your time slot and day! CMCS regular meeting Tuesday, November 15th at:7:00p.m. A Fashion Show presented by the CMCS members featuring clothing by BEALLS We will welcome you to the wonderful world of fashion of "Living the Florida Style". Please come and sit back to enjoy the fall presentation.. 4

5 November Cruising Report The Summerset Regatta was a big success in more ways than just racing. There were 14 cruisers that joined the regatta and moored their boats in the Metanzas Pass mooring field. They were able to join in on all the parties that were held for Summerset. Great participation from the club! BTW did you know that Waite Alexander has a new boat? Waite was one of the cruisers that joined the club at the mooring field in his new Nonsuch 30! Congratulations to Waite on his new dream boat. Hope you recognized Waite in his new boat. As you get this publication, the cruisers will be returning from Picnic Island and the Halloween Cruise. Prizes will be/were given for those dressed up in their scariest costumes. Normally, this cruise has a great turn out, and Judy and Charles Tomlins do an outstanding job planning this event. Hope the turn out was as well attended as in the past. Rear Commodore of Cruising Ned Christensen November 4-6 th is the Matanzas Pass Cruise led by Glen and Paula Vetter. Plan on attending the cruise and also join in the party that will be held after the Festival of the Islands Race. Steve Roake is inviting the cruisers to join the racers at Bonita Bills at about 6:00 for the party. Check with Steve Roake for the correct time. But then who could go wrong in showing up at Bonita Bills a little early, having a beer or a cocktail and a bite to eat before the party. Just to get into the party mood you understand. The Ft. Myers Boat Show will be held on Nov th. The CMCS has a booth at the boat show. Volunteers are needed at the booth for a two (2) hour period throughout the boat show. Volunteering gets you a free pass for the boat show as well as greeting the public and answering questions about our club. Contact Bill Meisenheimer to volunteer. The Thanksgiving Cruise will be from Nov th. Currently, there is not a cruise leader for this cruise. However several boats are planning on going to Pelican Bay and spending the time there. Plan on going to Pelican Bay and joining all the cruisers there on the beach for cocktails or just enjoy the time on the water. Some of you may know that I will be departing for the Caribbean on Nov. 16 th. The crew and I will take about days to reach St. Thomas. I ll spend the winter in and around St. Thomas with the planned return in April, While I am gone, Glen Vetter has kindly consented to finish up the last part of my duties as Rear Commodore of Cruising. Pass any information on cruising on to Glen. And a BIG THANKS to Glen! Remember to get out and enjoy sailing. This is that perfect time of the year that we wait for all summer! Just Do It!
