The Chowder Chatter Newsletter of the Caloosahatchee Marching & Chowder Society A Premiere Sailing Club of Southwest Florida Next Full Moon Dec 28 DECEMBER 2012 C o m m o d o r e ' s M e s s a g e As I write this month s message, our Thanksgiving Cruise will already be in the books. We had another great month with a couple great cruises, the Festival of the Islands Regatta, a Lady s Bridge Club field trip, and a great turn out for a fantastic speaker at our November Membership Meeting. Hopefully you got in your reservations for the Commodore s Cup Banquet on December 1 st, because it is probably now too late to make it. We announced our nominating committee s slate of officers for 2013 at the November 20 th Membership Meeting. See the posting further on. The one big unknown we seem to have is How do we run our racing program? We ve had no one step up for the Rear Commodore of Racing position. As we cruise into the end of the year, we get into a number of our most popular social events. First - like I already mentioned - the Commodore s Cup Banquet. Next, our Christmas Party (see the flier further on in the Chowder Chatter). Finally, our one and only formal affair, Change of Watch. Tucked in between these social events we have our Thanksgiving Cruise to Cabbage Key (only accessible by boat), and our New Year s Cruise, to which nearly as many people cruise by land as by sea. The big news from our November Board Meeting is the decision to continue donating 100% of the operating profit (money left after paying our expenses) from Summerset to Southwest Florida youth sailing and marine education. Between the new members coming in, and conservative nature of our officers, directors, and committee leaders, we felt this action was prudent. As usual, if you feel you would like a more detailed understanding of any club finances, please contact our illustrious Purser, Tim Stier. Finally as I finish this message from on-board Freestyle anchored in Pelican Bay Paula, Annie & I want to wish all our club members and friends a Very Merry & Happy Holidays!!! Smooth sailing to all, Commodore Glen Vetter gwvetter@gmail.com Web Guru's December Tip If you by chance made a major mistake by not getting your membership renewal mailed in to Bev Duff by November 1 st, your name, contact information, and boat information will not be in the printed Yearbook/Calendar. But, once you do renew, your information will be added to the online version of the club directory. If you find that getting to our online directory is daunting, because of the need for an ID and Password, feel free to contact your friendly Web Guru for assistance.

Summerset 2012 Vice Commodore of Summerset Drum roll, please.profit from the 2012 Summerset Regatta will be more than $9,000 this year. This amount and any more that trickles in due to merchandise sales is committed to youth sailing and marine education programs. We have started disbursing the funds with a check for $550 paid to the Charlotte Harbor Community Sailing Center that Steve Romaine presented at the Punta Gorda Sailing Club. This amount was based on the amount of participation and sponsorships from that region. What goes around comes around in good ways! We still have some long-sleeved microfiber and short-sleeved cotton T-shirts available in most sizes, so if you would like one of the remaining ones, give me a call and Joan Perkett we ll get together. At $30 and $15 respectively, they are a good value and a great Christmas present for hard-to -please relatives or in laws. It s been great working with all of you this year. Your generosity and volunteerism is world class. Thanks to all of you - Happy Sailing! - Joan Perkett, CMCS Vice Commodore Summerset Summerset Silver Sponsors Thank you to the 2012 Summerset Regatta Silver Sponsors: CHARLOTTE HARBOR BOAT STORAGE ANNAPOLIS PERFORMANCE SAILING GARMIN EDISON NATIONAL BANK ERICKSON AND JENSEN MARINE SUPPLY SALTY SAM S MARINA HOLIDAY INN OF FORT MYERS BEACH HORNER MARKETING SERVICES MOSS MARINE MATANZAS INN ERIC RAVENSCHLAG YACHT MANAGEMENT CHRIS SHIELDS SAILING SERVICES PROFESSIONAL DIVING AND HULL MAINTENANCE CREATIVE PHOTO & DIGITAL IMAGING JOHN PERRY STUDIO DAVE LAPIO STEEL DRUM BOAT MAIDS CHARLEY S BOAT HOUSE GRILL C & J YACHT SERVICES D & L DIESEL DIAMOND HEAD RESORT DEPENDABLE DIVING 2

Racing News Rear Commodore of Racing The Festival Of The Islands Regatta, held on Saturday, November 3, had 19 entries and 13 starters. The weather turned out better than forecast with sunny skies, pleasant temperatures, calm seas and light easterly breezes off of the beach. These conditions allowed for three shorter races to be completed. In the Multi-Hull Division, Erik Soronen s TRIUMPH was first, followed by Ned Christensen s Passion III. In the Spinnaker Division, Joel Andrews Macushla was first, followed by Eric Milbrandt s Full Tilt. In the Non-Spinnaker Division, Steve Romaine s Air Supply was first, followed by John Churchill s Nurdle and Gary Blessing s After You. In the True Cruising Division, Brock Johnson s Vixen was first, followed by David Naumann s Jolly Mon and Bill Misenheimer s Barefeet. Steve Roake The next event will be the Commodore s Cup Regatta on Saturday, December 1. This is the last regatta in the 2012 Buoy Series. The entry deadline is Friday before the race, at noon. The Commodore s Social and Dinner will be held after the Regatta. More information can be found in the November Chowder Chatter. Awards for the 2012 Distance Races, 2012 Buoy Series, and Fleet Champions will be presented at the Change of Watch Dinner on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the Cape Coral Yacht Club, beginning at 6:00 PM. Please plan to attend to receive your award(s) and honor your fellow racers. Registration information can be found elsewhere in this month s Chowder Chatter. The first event of the New Year will be the Chili Cook-off Regatta on Saturday, January 12, Mark your calendar! More information on this and other upcoming events will be in the December Chowder Chatter. The 2012 Buoy Series standings (preliminary, with two discards) are as follows: Multi-hull; first Triumph. Spinnaker; first Full Tilt (18), second Midnite Rider (33). Non-Spinnaker; first Air Supply (19.5), second Desperado (29)), third Wicked Wicked Ways (32.5). True Cruising; first Jolly Mon (16), second Vixen (20) and third Windy City (43). Buoy Series awards will be presented at the Change of Watch Dinner. The Fleet Champion Award is presented to the boat with the best combined scores for all of the racing events, both buoy and distance events. There are no discards. This year, with only the Commodore s Cup remaining to be scored, the preliminary standings are as follows: Multi-Hull Erik Soronen s TRIUMPH; Spinnaker Eric Milbrandt s Full Tilt; Non-Spinnaker Steve Romaine s Air Supply; and True Cruising Brock Johnson s Vixen. One of the benefits of being a U S Sailing member is receiving a new Racing Rules of Sailing rule book. The rules are updated every four years. The next new rules book will become effective on January 1, Join now to be on the mailing list for the new rules book. Go to for more information and membership applications. In addition to receiving your complimentary copy of the new Racing Rules of Sailing, membership entitles you to a ten percent discount on most regatta entry fees and discounts on merchandise available through the U.S. Sailing store. More importantly, it supports our national sailing organization national events and educational programs that promote sailing in the U.S. CMCS sponsored a rules seminar last year which was wellreceived. Look for an announcement later in the year for a rules seminar that will address any changes to the Racing Rules. 3

Macomber Book Bash Cruise Report Not only do CMCS sailors know how to read books, they know how to read the weather. By the time Trust Me!!! made it to the vicinity of St. James City on Friday, the collective wisdom had voted unanimously for the York Island side of Pine Island Sound. The winds of November were blowing early. Carol Pim/Gopher Baroque noted that it had been a while since she had been sailing downwind -wing on wing- and had to add layers rather than take them off. Once Win rafted off Trust Me!!! (they were dinghyless) happy hour was declared.(it is always 5 o clock somewhere). With Win handling the overflow dinghy parking, Trust Me!!! adopted a jaunty bow high attitude as Air Boss, Ariel, Chase the Clouds, Freestyle, Rum Daze Tanglefoot and Zydeco joined the mix. Four Seasons and Barefeet were also in the anchorage. As promised, the sipping rum was awarded those who could identify the lovely lady whose photo decorated the cruise notice. Dan and Carolyn -Bridgette O Toole noted immediately that if you simply moused over the picture the name appeared. Well, it has never been the goal in CMCS to make rum drinking difficult. A bottle, and then some later, the crowd wandered back to the boats for a mildly choppy night even tucked up at York. Saturday turned out to be just perfect. For as many of us that came by sea, at least as many came by land, no mean feat given the state of the Matlacha bridge. Carolyn and Dan came slumming from the north end of the Island. There were more Beavois than you could shake a stick at. Bobby Lee, Ron/Shirley Maddix, Ben/Carolyn Preston, Tim/Susan Stier, Bob/Linda Easterly, Charles/Judy Tomlins, Russell/Kathleen Vance, Ned Christenson, Elise Missal, Don/ Judy Sheldon and many more. The pulled pork and pitchers kept coming. The man of the day Cash or Check only Macomber sold a lot of books. The music was great early with a Cuban Group, great in the middle with a special reunion of the Yard Dogs and who knows how it ended as we are too old to stay out after dark Saturday was another choppy night at the anchorage- Waite had enough sense to pull anchor and reset at Merwin for the night. Most of us were just too lazy. It really wasn t bad; it has just been a lot of months since I last needed long pants and Judy was looking for Hot Tea and not Ice Tea. Safe sailing Kim & Judy Trust Me!!! 4

ANNUAL CHANGE OF WATCH DINNER AND DANCE Come one, come all to our annual recognition of the outgoing CMCS leaders and the incoming new guard. All members are welcome regardless of your position or length of membership. The festivities will begin at 6:00 PM on Saturday, January 5 th, 2013 at the Cape Coral Yacht Club, 5817 Driftwood Parkway. At check-in will be the 2013 calendars and a photographer ready to capture you and your date with a photograph of you in your party attire. A nice selection of appetizers will be available for consumption along with your BYOB cocktails until the awards presentation begins at 7:00 PM. At 7:45, a buffet dinner will be available which will include such offerings as prime rib, chicken marsala and vegetable lasagna along with salad, vegetables, rolls, coffee and tea. Dessert will be cheesecake with fruit. China, stemware, flatware, and ice will also be provided. By popular demand, we are bringing back Petty Cash to play tunes for dancing the evening away. Now, the best news is that the cost of this event is only $25.00 per person. The Board of Directors has agreed to subsidize the cost of the evening by $5.00 per person in an effort to encourage participation among more of our club members. What s not to like about that? All you have to do is fill out and return the following reservation form to me no later than Wednesday, January 2 nd. No exceptions, please. Cut this form out right now and return it to me before you get all caught up in the holidays. CHANGE OF WATCH RESERVATION FORM SATURDAY, JANUARY 5 TH, 2013 Name of Person(s) Attending: Total Amount Enclosed ($25.00 per person): Make check payable to CMCS and mail to Joan Perkett, 1411 SW 53 RD LN, Cape Coral, FL I must receive it no later than noon on Wed., Jan. 2 nd so we can give Chef Bill numbers for food planning. 5

Cruising Report Well, This is the last you ll hear from this Rear Commodore of Cruising as my term will end January 2013 and new RC steps aboard to take command of what has to be the most fun job in CMCS, trying to leader cruisers on Trips. As Carolyn Wilson says, Like leading cats. Ron and Shirley Maddix, RC of Cruising-elect, are taking the lead on CMCS cruising. They are already are hard at work lining up the itinerary for Many, many thanks to the Cruise Leaders during the past year. You have made this position very easy and not at all like leading cats. WE did have some cruises that had to be rearranged due to Marina limitations, storms and other challenges beyond our control however, everyone stepped and did their part. Here s a recap of the year in review: Bridget O Tool with Carolyn Wilson & Dan Green aboard ended 2011 and started 2012 with Vice Commodore of Cruising the Holiday cruise celebrating New Years at Fishermans Village. Bev Duff That cruise was followed in February with the EPOL cruise which is always a challenge because of the logistics involved for boats, food and people. Sea Isle with RoseAnne Hoffman and Paul Steinman. This cruise is short on boats these days however the member count is always high. March 2012 began with Wind Swept with Tom and Linda Koenig guided us to one of our favorite anchoring spots at Pelican Bay for a weekend of fun and sun and generally relaxing. And the month ended with the ever popular Cape Haze to Palm Island Marina and fun with Gerry and Kathy Wellens on Slo Dance that was enjoyed by many cruisers. Unfortunately, the San T weenie Cruise/Race in April didn t take place as planned however, cruise leaders Steve Romaine and Cindy Carlino on Air Supply were able to salvage a portion of it by ducking into South Seas Marina Resort with racers and cruisers. Another cruise that washed ashore was the Heading North cruise however there were two boats who made it work regardless ~ Bridget Toole & Kestrel II (Carolyn and Ben Preston) braved the wilds of the ICW and Sarasota area for a week of cruising. Then there is the ever favorite that always has the largest number of attendees, Danger Island Cruise over Memorial Day holiday. The Governor of Danger Island, Russell Vance and his bridge, Kathleen aboard Shadowfax, welcomed one and all to their mystical island by the sea. What happens on Danger Island, stays on Danger Island is the CMCS motto. Another long distance cruise in June, that challenged two hardy boats, was the 10,000 Island cruise in June. Air Boss with Dan & Debbie Merriman and Kestrel II with the Preston s leading the way ventured to parts undetermined for a planned week of cruising. Weather proved to be a challenge and their week was shorted somewhat. June also saw the Fisherman s Village Cruise for the hardier anchor out and marina boaters lead by Bob & Bev Duff on Chase the Clouds. Never ones to pass up a cool pool or A/C on a hot summers day, the cruisers enjoyed all the amenities of this marina and the neighboring shopping area. Fourth of July cruise was shared by two couples this year, Don Lawson & Joan Perkett on Sunday Silence and the Vances on their boat Shadowfax. The cruise was to the Franklin Locks are where our boaters were joined by the Land Cruisers for mix of camping and docking. As we re winding down summer in August, Gary and Jean Blessing on After You met us at the dock at T ween Waters with margarita s for the Parrott Head Cruise. That was just the beginning of a very fun weekend planned by them and certainly can see where this will be a tradition cruise. Where the Wind Blows cruise of Labor Day weekend found Mel Rudd on Sea Puppy leading the group south to Naples to the Naples Boat Club ~ there s was cool pool awaiting there too and plenty of beverage for the thirsty sailors. Definitely a prerequisite for summer cruising! Dan & Debbie Merriman on Air Boss hosted the South Seas Cruise as part of the Kayusa Cup Race. A pool and beverage were at the end of a very long day of racing for the fleet and the cruisers had already made themselves comfortable poolside. An evening shower didn t dampen the spirits and Mother Nature hosed off the fleet. Sadly one our favorite cruises, Halloween Cruise with cruise leaders Judy & Charles Tomlin on Judy Judy had to be cancelled due to Spooktacular Hurricane Sandy working her way up the eastern sea board and causing gale force winds in our area. No storm here however, very breezy conditions for even the hardiest sailor. Best to be safe and not later sorry! The same conditions also cancelled the Matanzas Pass cruise in early November in conjunction with the Festival of Island Race. The racers did their thing but the cruisers stayed home with the winds gusting to make conditions at anchoring and on a mooring very uncomfortable. Continued on Page

FLEET RECRUITER Bev Duff MEMBERSHIP & RECRUITMENT Thanks to so many of you who have gotten your renewals to me!!! Many more need to come in... Please note that the membership forms will not be mailed out separately however, are included in each Chowder Chatter as well as available online at our WEB site Please note the DUE date for renewals is November 31 st. After that you will not make the drop dead date for the 2013 Annual Calendar! We ll be cruising this Thanksgiving and the laptop is with me to add the changes and members who have turned their renewals in a timely manner. You know who you are if you ve not sent yours in... No kidding, they need to be to membership by end of November! membership@cmcs-sail.org Can t thank the members of CMCS too much for all your efforts to grow our organization. I ve run out of Burgees and will have to place a year end order to have some for next year s membership chairman. I understand from the Boat Show group that there were many inquires about CMCS, even from members of other Yacht Club in our area. You know why ~ we aren t a fork and knife club ~ WE ARE BOATERS WHO REALLY GET OUT AND ENJOY OUR BOATS! Yes, I m shouting that because it is so true and the other boaters in our community are recognizing this uniqueness. We are so fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful areas of the USA, and Florida, why wouldn t we boat as much as possible. A bad day on the water is still better than a good day at work in my opinion! We added another new member to our ranks, Richard Hening, at the last meeting. Richard is a new sail boat owner with an S-2 but a long time power boater. He is looking for sailors who are willing to teach him how to sail his own boat, and to crew with others to learn more about sailing. As he told me, the boating part is easy it s learning the ropes of sailing that is the challenge. We all have been there Richard and understand the challenge! And yes, a sheet is not the sail but the rope to handle the sail. Don t you just love the jargon of sailing. Reminder that Sail Mate, Diane Fowler will be getting hold of each new member to match them with a seasoned CMCS member and help them become familiar with the Clubs traditions and events. As I take the Helm of CMCS as Commodore (if elected) this next year, I m looking for a few good people to step up and handle the ropes Recruitment. Manning the Recruiting table is great fun getting to meeting and greet everyone who comes in. If you can handle Excel program, you can do this committee without any problem. Don t be shy about stepping up to take the lead. Please advise if you are interested to so we can get you on board as quickly as possible. ABACO BAHAMAS CRUISE (In Planning) I am trying to plan a cruise to the Abacos next June. Current idea is to leave Lake Worth Inlet (Palm Beach) on or about June 1 crossing to West End, then on to the Abcos. Return to SWFL on or about June 23. If anybody else is interested in such a trip, please contact Gordon Coffman -- "Ariel" or GHCoffman@rocketmail.com. 7

CMCS Selection of Officers Stephanie Webb, Nominating Committee Approaching the Starting Line As of the November General Meeting, the CMCS Family now includes nearly 140 memberships. Kudos to everyone! CMCS is doing something very right when most other organizations both professional and social are losing members. Now as we close the 2012 year with the Commodore s Cup, the December social, and anticipate the Change of Watch, it is time to welcome, and support, new leaders. The following slate of Flag Officers and Directors was presented to the membership at the November meeting: Flag Officers (serving for 2013) Commodore Bev (Beverly) Duff Vice Commodore Jim (James) Lasorella Rear Commodore/Summerset Steve Romaine Rear Commodore/Cruising Ron Maddix Fleet Yeoman Mary Misenheimer Fleet Purser Tim (Timothy) Stier Past Commodore Glen Vetter NOTE: there is no candidate for Rear Commodore of Racing!! Board of Directors for : Steve (Stephen) Carpenter Rodger Pfeiffenberger Mike Smith Erik Soronen The following four Directors do not require election, but are continuing to complete their term of office for the year: Russ Green, Art Gross, Paul Steinman, and Stephanie Webb A motion to close the nominations was made, seconded and passed by the majority of members at the November meeting. It is noted, however, that a vacancy does exist for the Flag Officer position of Rear Commodore of Racing. Those who race actively know the importance of this position. Your Officers and Board are poised to offer layers of support and possible options for this vital Officer position. We need a hero for Racing please step up! Elections will take place during the December meeting. The Credentials Committee, overseen by Commodore Vetter, will conduct the process. Special thanks go to the Board (Officers & Directors) and Committee members who actively led the charge to identify new leadership. This was a team effort one that could not have been completed without their help! We look forward to seeing you at the Change of Watch in January! Let s go sailing! 8

Ladies Bridge Club On November 15 th, 5 CMCS ers left Cape Coral at approximately 8:30 AM for Mote Aquarium on Lido Key, Sarasota. A drive 1-1/2 hours with Capt. Steve Roake at the wheel got us there in time to see Moonshine, a spinner dolphin in a training session. A giant squid, goliath grouper, green turtles, sirenians, stingrays, sharks, tarpon, snook, lookdowns, touch tank and other misc. displays filled our day. We were lucky to have our very own naturalist, Theresa Roake sharing insights with us. We took this group photo and then were off to St. Armonds Circle for a late lunch at Columbia. Rose Ann Hoffman Thank you Steve for offering to drive! Reminder the Ladies Bridge Club Christmas Party and Pirate Gift Exchange will be held on December 4 th at 7:00 PM at Diane Fowler s home. Please bring a wrapped gift valued at $20 - $25 for the infamous gift exchange, an appetizer to share and your favorite beverage. Car pooling is suggested as parking is not allowed on the median. Diane s address is 2540 El Dorado Pkwy West. Cruising Report ~ Continued from Page 7. Mid November saw the Sanibel Bight/ Bob Macomber Book Bash cruise drawing one and all to anchor of York Island for a couple of days. Trust Me with Kim Brown and Judy Anderson put their boat to the cockpit capacity test. We all rocked and rolled at anchor and dinghied to Woody s Waterfront for food, fun and beverage. Oh Yeah, author Bob Macomber was there with the release of his latest novel. The last full cruise of 2012 is the Thanksgiving cruise happening at the printing of this edition of the Chowder Chatter. Once again, Carolyn Wilson and Dan Green on Bridget O Toole ~ just gluttons for punishment, are our cruise leaders. The cruise begins with dinner at Cabbage Key for those out on Thanksgiving Day and the rest will join the cruise at Pelican Bay. The weather report looks good so far for sun and fun, and a good breeze to sail home with out of the north if a bit on the cooler side. The final cruise of 2012 and the first for 2013 (as the points are tallied) is the Holiday Cruise ending at Fisherman s Village in Punta Gorda for the New Years party. If interested in this cruise, please contact Randy at Fisherman s Village ( or Randy@Fishvill.com ), and Carolyn Wilson, Cruise Leader to get your name added to our roster of attendees for the slips. We have limited number available and they go fast as this is a very popular destination. The Marina hosts a fun New Year s event with food beverages and band. AND the stores of Fisherman s Village Mall do it up right with all kinds of activities for all ages. Thanks to all the Cruise Leaders for volunteering to host each event, your cooperation and help to make our cruising program such a success this year. It has truly been my privilege to have been the Rear Commodore of Cruising for Bev Duff 9
