Box , Cape Coral, Fl September, 2016 Commodore s Message Commodore Don Lawson The good thing about September in Florida is that we re nearing the end of summer although you can t tell that by the heat and humidity right now. We can all keep our fingers crossed that we ll be seeing some more moderate weather before long and we can hope that hurricane season will pass us by and not bring major storms. This time of year we really do enjoy our swimming pool whether you re coming in from a day on the water or working in the yard it s a great way to cool off and enjoy a cold beverage. We re now getting back into racing season and of course the Gypsea s in Paradise Cruise sets sail on Sept 2. Following that we have the annual South Seas Cruise and the Kayusa Cup BOTY race the weekend of Sept. 16. The Kayusa Cup has become a tradition for CMCS with the race being named after long time members Bob and Betty Kayusa. The big CMCS event of the year is but a month away by the time this article is printed. Summerset is Oct in the Gulf of Mexico off of Fort Myers Beach. The Summerset Committee is working hard to plan the events and races for both racers and cruisers. Joe Barch, Allen Fiske and Steve Romaine are doing a great job bringing in sponsors for this year s event. Proceeds from Summerset go to support Youth Sailing Programs and in particular our local group Edison Sailing Center. We are in need of volunteers to help with Summerset in several areas Friday night we ll need some help to go get and serve pizzas; Saturday night we ll need help checking people in to the Happy Hour Social as well as greeting guests and checking people in for the Sunday night dinner. Helping hands are always in need so please do what you can to make Summerset a success. We are very much in need of a larger power boat that can be used for a Committee Boat during Summerset. If you have such a vessel or know of someone who does, please get in touch. We also need someone who can do photography not only on the water during the races but also at the events so we save all those good memories. If you enjoy photography this is a lot of fun. The Skipper s Meeting Friday is at Bonita Bills, the Saturday Social Hour will be at Bootleggers restaurant at Salty Sam s Marina and the final event, the awards dinner will once again be held at the Diamond Head Resort and Spa. Be sure to get your reservations in place early. In October, Robert Macomber will the guest speaker for the general membership meeting. Bob is one of the original founding members of CMCS and is a well-known local author. Bob will be speaking about Yachts That Went to War during the Spanish-American war. It will be an entertaining program - you won t want to miss it. And yes, Bob will be selling and autographing his books. 2 CMCS Chowder Chatter September, 2016 Page 2 Rear Commodore of Cruising s Report Rear Commodore Cruising Jean Blessing Hello Sailors! It s a great time to cruise! The weather is warm; and there are those pesky thunderstorms that pop up every afternoon small price to pay for being in paradise! Our fifth annual Parrothead Cruise to Tween Waters, August 19 21, is now a pleasant memory. Those thunderstorms stayed over the mainland never touched us out on Captiva, but did put on quite a light show! A report on this cruise is available elsewhere in this newsletter. September offers two cruises for your enjoyment. Labor Day is the cruise to Naples, Gypseas in Paradise (formerly known as Where the Wind Blows.) Bob and Cathy Friedel are cruise leaders. In addition, the South Seas Cruise will be led by George and Pixie Noyes, in conjunction with Kayusa Cup race. See further info in this newsletter and contact cruise leaders for availability of slips. You won t want to miss the Halloween Cruise to Legacy Harbor in October, led by Barry and Julie Long and Steve Romaine and Cindy Carlino. Look for the article describing what they have cooked up for this spooktacular weekend on another page in this newsletter. The Rum and Illiteracy cruise is being given a re-do by cruise leader Kim Brown due to the delay in the release of Bob Macomber s new book (not until April!) More info elsewhere in this Chowder Chatter. The second cruise for November is the Thanksgiving Cruise to Pelican Bay over Thanksgiving weekend. More info to come. See you on the water! Jim Slager Membership and Fleet Recruiter s/v Salty Soul MEMBER NEWS: Madeleine Tilley, an Honorary and Charter member of CMCS, currently lives in Baton Rouge, LA. She writes of the recent flooding.: The people in my retirement center were all evacuated to another center, with the help of many small boats, where we spent the first night, sleeping on mats on the floor, a horrible night. The next day Michele came to get me and luckily her house was not under water. Meanwhile, her son Nathan and wife were just returning from a trip to Yellowstone, when they found their beautiful, newly redecorated house under 4 ft of water... We helped them save as many clothes as we could by washing them, drying them and (me) folding them. We spent two days at it, while Nathan was saving as many pieces of furniture that he could...a real tragedy. Thank God my place was not affected on the inside but they threw away everything we had in our fridge and freezer, just in case! Michele brought me back yesterday, Sunday, and I am still trying to get over this terrible time. But I am ok. Thanks for your kind thoughts, will write more later. Love, Madeleine.

3 CMCS Chowder Chatter September, 2016 Page 3 Rear Commodore Racing Rear Commodore- Racing Eric Milbrandt The Kayusa Cup distance race and Boat of the Year race is coming up on Saturday 09/17. If you did not sign up for the series in January, boats that are planning to race need to print a race entry form, and include your entry fees, and your new 2016 PHRF certificate to Ian Davis. All other racers that are paid up need to send their PHRF certificates to Ian: Ian Davis; 5217 SW 11 th Ct.; Cape- Coral, FL ; iand2002@hotmail.com. Many preparations are being made for Summerset. Look for the Notice of Race (NOR) for more details. It's CMCS's chance to host out-of-town racers and give back to youth sailing. We are still looking for a large boat (sail or power) and operator to be the signal boat. If you have any leads, please let me or one of the other officers know. October 7-9 Summerset Regatta November 5 Festival of the Islands CMCS ANNUAL PICNIC There were 42 attendees at the July 30, 2016 CMCS Annual Picnic held at the Cape Coral Yacht Club Pavilion from 12:00 noon to 3:30 p.m. CMCS Liberty Ashore provided hamburgers, hotdogs, buns and all of the traditional trimmings (lettuce, tomato, onions, etc.). Attendees were asked to bring either an appetizer, side dish, salad, or dessert to share. Following lunch, attendees socialized and played a tournament game of ladder ball. Each player was given 5 tosses to achieve the highest score. Bill Boyer won the tournament! Many volunteers assisted with the event and helped make it happen: Grill Masters: Don Lawson, Dan Green and David Naumann; Sound system set up: Glen Vetter; Ladder ball game was provided by Charles & Judy Tomlin; Ladder Ball Scorekeeper: Joan Perkett; Set up/clean up volunteers included Carol Pim, Natalie Pim, Katelyn Pim, John and Susan Reeke, John Guzzeta, Fran Chapman, Russell and Kathleen Vance, Carolyn Wilson, Bob and Cathy Friedel, Vic and Maga Perla, Bill Boyer, Joan Perkett and Paula Vetter and Jim Slager. Bev Slager Liberty Ashore Chair s/v Salty Soul MARK YOUR CALENDARS: October 18, Award-winning local author and CMCS member, Robert Macomber, will be at our monthy meeting. TOPIC: "Yachts that Went to War" - The story of elegant yachts turned into warships during the Spanish-American War. In 1898, the US Navy needed more ships, and they needed them quickly to fight the Spanish in Cuba. Turning to America's yachtsmen, 38 elegant yachts became warships. Many went into combat and several became famous. Amazing story! Bring your friends! Robert is a spellbinding speaker. Some of his books will also be available for purchase. 4 CMCS Chowder Chatter September, 2016 Page 4 Meet Us in Margaritaville Cruise Report CMCS s fifth annual Meet Us in Margaritaville cruise began on August 19th at three (hey, it s 5 o clock somewhere!) Cruisers were welcomed with souvenir margarita glasses filled with that immortal concoction. Friday s arrivals included Jolly Mon, Sol Adventure, Sunshine, Chase the Clouds, Jazzy, Mental Floss, Sail La Vie, Jack B, Salty Dog, and I Sheet U Knot. All settled in at Margaritaville and got together at 5 O Clock for Buffett-inspired appetizers and more margaritas. All rose to their feet for the national anthem of Margaritaville. Some left for dinner, others just hung out. A video of Jimmy s Anguilla concert was playing in the background and later, Mark and Carol Beauvois with daughter Jennifer treated us to live music! Saturday morning at 10 AM, the competition began for fabulous prizes! The first event was a returning event: Water Balloon Catch with Mental Floss (Rick and granddaughter Vaeh) coming in first place. Next was ladder golf with Mike Pfaff, who arrived by land, coming in first place. Our third event was the ever popular Fill the Margarita Glass which called upon contestants to be resourceful and inventive, using water from the Gulf to fill margarita glasses from 6 feet away. In the end, Sunshine (Sara Cheney and Dave Parks) came in first place in the adult division. Kristi and Natalie Pim, who arrived on Gopher Baroque this morning, took the kids division. With a few modifications, Knees of my Heart Frisbee was our last game, with Sunshine being the winners. Calusa arrived to round out the cruisers with 12 boats present. Following an afternoon of relaxing and pooling, Parrotheads met on the dock for 5 O Clock libations, appetizers and dinner, partying in true Buffett style. Cheeseburgers were served fresh from the grill. We were joined by an amazing number of land cruisers including: Diane Fowler, Connie and Sonny Rideout, Diane and Mike Pfaff, Chris Shields and Mary Yankaskas, Judy and Charles Tomlins, James and Gina Brown, Lee and Calista Reeves, Kim Brown and Judy Anderson, Kim Eggers and friend Noel, Hal and Robin Klingler, Ron and Sara Dyer, as well as boat guests: Jennifer Hayman with Austin, Julie and Blake Kennedy with Emma, and Peggy and Roger on Jolly Mon. We apologize in advance if we missed someone quite a crowd to try to take attendance!! Guess news of a party travels fast! Seriously, we were thrilled so many took the time on a hot day to come to Tween Waters! Prizes were awarded for the morning competitions with winners going away with the finest wine $3 can buy and other gifts. Sunday morning, Jimmy Buffett s referenced Café du Monde opened with our own Linda Eggers preparing fresh beignets! Coffee was served and breakfast shared. It was an incredible spread. Additional awards were given to Sol Adventure for most creative food inspired by Buffett lyrics, Mental Floss for beignets, and Sail La Vie for musical treat. Then most boarded their vessels and headed home to their own Particular Harbor to await next year s festivities. Remember: We are the People our parents warned us about! 5 CMCS Chowder Chatter September,t, 2016 Page 5 Rum and Illiteracy York Island or thereabouts- Nov For years this cruise has promoted the worthy goal of literacy among sailors and it tied into Bob Macomber s Book Bacchanalia. Well Bob s next book won t be out until next spring. (save the date of April 1, 2017). Bob decided he needs a book launch as an excuse to party. Silly Bob. We decided we only needed Rum. This is more of an excursion than a cruise. On Friday, November 11, Trust Me!!! will arrive on the scene in time for happy hour. We intend to anchor off of York/St. James City unless the wind is uncooperative. Sanibel Bight is the obvious alternative. We ll monitor 72/16. Happy hour Friday will be on TrustMe!!! or any larger boat willing to host the tasting. Standard drill- 5P, BYOB and munchies to share. At 6P or sooner the tastings will begin. We have added a fresh bottle of last year s winner (in the photo) to our ship s stores. It will take on all challengers. So bring your favorite. Remember this is a serious search for a sailor s salsipotent sipping rum. No umbrella drinks or rum punch concoctions allowed. Rums from New Jersey need not apply. Like the Olympics there will be preliminaries and quarter finals and semi s and finals and recharges and any other reason we can think of to keep the bottles moving. In the end there should be only one bottle and no sailors standing. Saturday morning (10ish?) we ll explore a bit. I am open to suggestions. We can circumnavigate York. We can circumnavigate St. James City. If we are over in Sanibel Bight we can play hide and seek in the Mangroves. We can commit to a long haul and search for the fountain of youth purported to be on Chino. The goal is to justify a hearty lunch at Well I am open to suggestions there too. This is our chance to expand our culinary horizons beyond Woody s. Ragged Ass? Waterfront? Or Woody s works too. What else is there in the booming metropolis that we have missed? Is there a restaurant in the new Trump Tower? Get your thoughts and preferences in, we ll pick a winner so we can give them a heads -up that a large scruffy crew will be invading. We will do a happy hour reprise Saturday night on a boat to be named later. Head home Sunday. This is CMCSso come and go when you want. 6 CMCS Chowder Chatter September, 2016 Page 6 CMCS GYPSEAS IN PARADISE CRUISE (formerly the Where The Wind Blows Cruise) September 2-5, 2016 Bob Friedel is now taking reservations for the cruise to Naples Boat Club over the Labor Day weekend September 2-5. There are only 12 slips available so it s first come-first served. The time and date of your will determine the order of selection. Naples Boat Club is on the Gordon River about a half mile north of Naples City Dock. The marina is very nice with pool, poolside tiki bar (where there will be complimentary frozen concoctions for your enjoyment), very nice club room, showers, and within walking distance to Tin City and downtown. Slips are $2.00/ft/night + $10/night electric. To sign up for this cruise, please send your name, boat name, length, beam, draft, and a credit card number to Bob Friedel at rfriedel@comcast.net. This is to hold your slip. You will not be charged until you check in at the dock. Also, indicate the number of nights (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, etc). This has been a popular cruise so don t delay in signing up. FYI: Most slips have a 50 amp electric service and splitters may not be available so bring a splitter if you need 30 amp service. 7 CMCS Chowder Chatter September, 2016 Page 7 CMCS Kayusa Cup Race / Cruise September 16-18, 2016 South Seas Resort Captiva Island The Kayusa Cup/South Seas Cruise is coming up on September 16th to the 18th. George & Pixie Noyes on Silver Sea will be the cruise leaders. All those cruising can join us on the dock at 5 pm. Bring cocktails and appetizers. Dining will be on your own and South Seas has gas grills available for our use. The racers will be offshore on Saturday while the cruisers already there will be watching from the beach or poolside. We'll get together at the marina side BBQ area at 5pm, after the racers have finished. Bring your favorite libation and snacks to share. For dinner there are many great restaurants nearby. Many boats may leave Sunday, but some will be relaxing around the pool and departing on Monday. We'll figure out cocktails depending on who is staying. Reservations at South Seas Marina must be made on your own. Contact Charles Martz at Our group rate is $2.35/ft and $10/day for most electricity. It's never too early to reserve a slip and the deadline will be the middle of August. This is a great way to enjoy all that South Seas has to offer.
