1 The Chowder Chatter The Official Newsletter of The Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society Cape Coral / Fort Myers, Florida Next Full Moon: January 4 P.O. Box , Cape Coral, Fl January 2015 Commodore s Message Commodore Diane Fowler As I write my final letter to the troops, I am amazed at how fast this year has gone by! My goals for the year were to have more LADIES participate in sailing; and have our members who did not own boats - get a sail or two in. These goals were achieved - but there is still room on the Gulf of Mexico for more participation! When I race Windy City in weekend regattas like Conquistador Cup in Punta Gorda or Porsche Cup in Naples, I invite ladies to help with boat moving days: Friday & Monday. Several new gals came out with me and we got to know each other better, had a lot of laughs and got to sail without any men yelling! I will continue to invite ladies! If you would like to know Windy's schedule - just me! I can take 6 ladies on each moving day. Usually, one hubby drives and picks everyone up / drops them off at the same time. Although, several husbands came and the couple then went out to dinner in another city! Good idea, too! Our day sails will continue! This year, they are marked on the calendar in our YEARBOOK, so you can make a note of these dates in advance and plan to participate. Either bring YOUR boat for the day, or crew on one of our beautiful sailing vessels who are participating. In 2014, we sailed down to the Pink Shell Docks, had lunch at Bongo's, poolside, then sailed back to Cape Coral. I will continue on in this position, to try to match up folks to go together. Our 2015 schedule continues to have MANY events: cruises, socials, and races each month. JUMP IN - the water's warm! We all need to continue to use our talents to improve the club. Our officers this year were superb and we accomplished many projects. Again, I repeat myself that CMCS is the best value for the money in SW FL. REMEMBER: The Change of Watch Dinner is January 9, 2015, at LaVenezia Ballroom in Cape Coral. Please contact Elise Missall to register early. Also, next October is the 50th Summerset Regatta. Don't miss this one! Thank you for letting me be your faithful leader this year, and I look forward to more adventures and fun with you all in 2015, Fair winds, Captain Diane Fowler, S/V Windy City 32' Catalina CELL: CMCS Officers Commodore: Diane Fowler Vice Commodore: Allen Fiske Vice Commodore Summerset: Steve Romaine Rear Commodore Cruising: John Reekie Rear Commodore Racing: Stan Dale Fleet Yeoman Diane Pfaff Fleet Purser Bill Cook Past Commodore Bev Duff Chowder Chatter Editor Steve Roake

2 CMCS Chowder Chatter January 2015 Page 2 Rear Commodore of Racing s Report Rear Commodore Racing Stan Dale The Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society (CMCS) sponsored its annual Commodore s Cup Regatta on Saturday, December 6th, 2014 in the Gulf of Mexico off of Ft. Myers Beach. The Commodore s Cup is the final regatta of the calendar year for CMCS. Eleven boats competed across four divisions in this the fifth (5 th ) and final regatta in the 2014 CMCS Buoy Series races. The day was a nearly perfect day for a regatta with late morning seasonal breezes growing to 8-10 knots. The Multi-hull and Spinnaker fleets were able to navigate four (4) races before the winds gave up. The Non-Spinnaker and True Cruising fleet s booked three (3) races. All divisions battled strong tides at the finish mark of the final race. Overall Commodore s Cup Results: Multi-hull Division: First Kraken (Art Monohan) Spinnaker Division: First Full Tilt (Eric Milbrandt) Second Nurdle (John Churchill) Non-Spinnaker Division: First Air Supply (Steve Romaine) Second Wicked-Wicked Ways (Roger Horton) Third Bentley (Tom Horner) Fourth Miss Cathleen (John Finnegan) True Cruising Division: First Laura Li (Arnie Pfalz) Second Windy City (Diane Fowler) Third Wind Star (Ian Davis) Fourth Jazzy (Gary Blessing) CMCS will open the 2015 Season with the 1 st Buoy Race in the series of five (5) on Saturday, January 24 th with the annual Chili Cook-Off Regatta, to be followed by the ever-popular Chili-Cook-Off dinner on Sunday evening, January 25 th. All interested sailors are invited to check our website for easy to print entry forms and information. Fees are minimal, the fun is priceless! Race crew and Committee/Marker boat crews are encouraged to participate. 4 CMCS Chowder Chatter January, 2015 Page 4 Thanksgiving Cruise Recap For the long Thanksgiving weekend the weather gods provided us with cool and at times blustery conditions. Two boats - Air Boss and Freestyle ventured up to Pelican Bay early. Tuesday night - actually early Wednesday morning - a strong cold front pushed through. Changing a mild Southerly wind into a strong Northerly blow. Despite the heavy North winds, which cause exceptionally low tides, we saw none of our sailors run aground while entering or leaving Pelican Bay. Not so much could be said for the Colgate Sailing School Beneteau, which managed to go aground twice on the same charted bar. We were all polite and asked no questions. By Thursday morning - though cold by our soft Florida standards - the weather was tolerable enough for the crews of eight (8) vessels to venture to Cabbage Key for another great Thanksgiving feast. Cabbage Key Restaurant normally a burger & bar stop puts on a great Thanksgiving feast with all the trimmings in an Old Florida setting. The only way to get there is by boat. The weather for Thursday and Friday evenings was still too cool for us wimpy Floridians. Yet during the day we had fun boat hopping, and exploring Cayo Costa State Park. We had the traditional CMCS beach cocktail gatherings at Dog Beach on both Friday and Saturday evenings. All together there were thirteen (13) CMCS boats in attendance. 1. s/v Air Boss with Dan & Debbie 2. s/v Double Dragon with Sven & Nina & sons 3. s/v Freestyle with Glen & Paula 4. s/v Gone With the Wind with Barry & Julie 5. s/v Grateful with Jeff 6. s/v Gopher Baroque with Carol, Jason & Kristi, and daughters 7. s/v Lazy Susan with John & Susan 8. s/v Trust Me! with Kim & Judy 9. s/v Windseeker with Steve & Kitty 10. s/v Samphire with Eric & Dorothy 11. s/v Silver Sea with George & Pixie 12. s/v Slow Dance with Jerry & Kathy s/v Tyrolia with Raimund & Ingrid New Officers At the December General Meeting / Christmas Party the CMCS 2015 Officers and Directors were elected.
