CMCS Chowder Chatter May, 2018 Page 3 Commodore Bev Duff There s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it s sent away... (author unknown) Offer the membership a grill and promise of food and they will show up!!! What a great turn out we have for the April Grill Night. Once gain many thanks to Wendy and Julie for hosting this Liberty Ashore event. I loved all the salads. We didn t try to hold a regular meeting as it s difficult to be heard in the CCYC Pavilion but everyone appeared to have a great time just visiting with each other. Vice Commodore, Jason Pim is always looking for speaker suggestions so don t be shy about giving him a shout out of an idea. As I m writing this at my office, I m wishing I was with the group sailing to Panther Key and points south. Quite a group was planning to enjoy this cruise and the weather has been good most of the week they re away. Pray they re having a wonderful cruise! Plans are underway for the Jerry Pim Estebel Night Race and the Bloody Mary Cruise/Brunch at Pink Shell Resort the first weekend in May. There is plenty of information about this event in the Chowder Chatter and reservations are a must! Commodore s Message That said, I plan to begin the monthly meetings at 1900hrs with the Meet & Greet beginning at 1830hrs. With CMCS, there is always something to do and I hope that everyone will take full advantage of our full schedule. Just remember to RSVP those events as requested. See you on the water! Bev Duff Commodore Vice Commodore of Summerset Report Vice Commodore of Summerset Allen Fiske The biggest news this month is that our Committee has chosen one of Roger Horton s paintings as the Artwork for the t-shirt. The painting is from the 1983 Americas Cup and is Dennis Conner s Liberty and Australia II. Please consider a Boat Shirt Sleeve Sponsorship and if you have any other Sponsorship ideas, please let me know! 3 The end of May is the Danger Island Cruise at Pelican Bay for Memorial weekend. This is always a fun cruise with plenty of activities for everyone to enjoy. We had the first meeting of the year for the Summerset Regatta that is the first weekend of October It s never too early to get the sponsorships in place. Forms are available through the committee persons, and all members are encouraged to participate in some way with this event. Allen Fiske Vice Commodore Summerset s/v Minimum Balance

CMCS Chowder Chatter May, 2018 Page 4 4 Vice Commodore & Legislative Liaison Jason Pim Bimini Basin Brouhaha The City of Cape Coral's consultant held the first of two public sessions on establishing a mooring field on Tuesday April 3rd. On Wednesday April 4th, the city announced to local news stations that the cardboard boat race cannot take place in the basin due to high levels of bacteria that indicate fecal contamination. Vice Commodore s Report more about the plan, the event times and locations, and submit comments on the matter at capecoralmooringfield.com. At any rate, the news outlets are having some fun with writing poop headlines/punchlines. B e a c h B a t t l e In OTHER, more far-reaching news, you can read and watch all about the state of Florida passing a new law that blocks municipalities from being able to establish "open beaches". This new state law strengthens private property owners' rights and defines what areas of beach the public has access to, allowing property owners to run-off beach-goers on "dry" sand above the high tide line if they so choose to. Let's just say it's an interesting time to call yourself a Floridian as we watch our rights to beach and water access come into question. C h i q u i t a L o c k U p d a t e The sailboats anchored in the basin are of course suspect #1, whether there is any direct evidence or not. Property owners nearby have long wanted to see the liveaboards run out or regulated via a mooring field. There are big plans for redevelopment in the area, including possibly the waterfront at Four Freedoms Park. In an April 5 News-Press story, city councilman John Cariscocia is on record suggesting he would support an all-out ban on mooring in the basin, "You re not allowed to moor in canals. Why can t we extend that prohibition to any mooring in the basin, which is just an extension of the canals? We want to put together an ordinance. Whatever it takes, we re going to do." I have reached out to him via for clarification on those remarks. The 2nd and final public info session is scheduled for May 1 and then the City Council will have 2 hearings on June 4 and 11, likely concluding with a vote that final day. You can learn In a more positive piece of news, I've learned (but not yet confirmed) that the FDEP requested the City of Cape Coral to basically go back to the drawing board and remodel their mitigation plan in their request to remove the Chiquita Lock. The new deadline is in August. S t a y s a l t y o u t t h e r e, Jason Pim Vice Commodore & Legislative Liaison

CMCS Chowder Chatter May, 2018 Page 5 Rear Commodore of Cruising Report Rear Commodore Cruising Theresa Roake Our cruise to Palm Island over Easter weekend was lots of fun. The inn was full and we also had boats join us in the anchorage nearby. We started out at Pelican Bay on Thursday and then headed on up to Palm Island on Friday for fun in the pool followed by a grill night and potluck poolside. It was a little overcast on Saturday and many of us headed over to Palm Island for lunch and exploration. Most joined us for dinner at Leverocks on Saturday evening. Easter morning had most of us heading back to Pelican Bay to unwind for another day. In attendance were Ambiance, Annaliesia, Buffy, Bridget O Toole, Chase the Clouds, Foxy Lady, Jolly Mon, Lionheart, Sol Adventure, Trust Me, Westerleigh, Windy City, and Windswept. We just got back from the Panther Key cruise headed up by Kim Brown and Judy Anderson on Trust Me. What a great time! This cruise was moved to an earlier time slot this year and it was truly a winner with great weather and no bugs. Lots of adventures including a rum tasting on the beach. Look for more details on all the fun in Kim s article. Next up is the Bloody Mary Cruise in conjunction with the Jerry Pim Memorial Race. The Pims will be our hosts. The fun starts Friday May 4 th at Pink Shell Marina on Fort Myers Beach. The race is on Saturday evening and we cap off the weekend with the Bloody Mary Brunch on Sunday, May 6 th at 9:30 am. Please let me (Theresa) know if you are attending the brunch in advance so that we have enough for everyone. The cost is $5 per person or free if you race. Reservations are required but pay when you come. Cash and checks are acceptable. We look forward to seeing you. Last but certainly not least, it s almost time for Danger Island May over Memorial Day Weekend. There are new rulers at Danger Is- Rear Commodore of Cruising Report -land this year. We look forward to seeing what new fun Mark and Maureen Franzer have for their subjects. Look for them on their beautiful Beneteau Annaliesia. We arrive on Friday and who knows there might be Happy Hour. Then on Saturday morning Black Tie Croquet (don t forget that little something black) and the Chowder Contest at 5pm. Sunday is for relaxing after all that activity on Saturday on your boat or at the beach. Homeward bound on Monday. Please see the flier elsewhere in the Chowder Chatter or contact me or your new rulers. That s all for now. Hope to see you out on the water. Theresa Roake Rear Commodore Cruising s/v Lionheart Points South Cruise Report Southier 2018 Clever group these CMCS ers. A full twelve vessels made it to Panther Key all by themselves. Trust Me!!! spent Thursday night at the newly reopened Naples City dock (fancy new floating docks and new showers that don t sway). Others massed in Champney Bay and Factory Bay for the final charge to Panther on Friday. Trust Me!!!, Westerleigh, Passion III, Lazy Susan, Lionheart, Bridgette O Toole, Airboss, Foxy Lady, Blue Moon, I Sheet You Not, Zydeco, and Sea Mist were all there. Friday s Happy hour on the beach quickly morphed into the serious purpose of this cruise- crowning the 2018 sipping rum champion. There were 7 contenders (or was it 8- things got fuzzy early in the process). The quality was extremely high- not a loser in the bunch. Best as I can remember it went down like this- Metusalem (Peter Wake s favorite) was paired against Havana Club Maestro and lost. So the new 5

CMCS Chowder Chatter May, 2018 Page 6 6 Points South Cruise Report Dominican version (Metusalem was Cuban before the revolution) didn t cut it against the real Cuban Havana Club Maestro. Last year s winner Zacapa 23 went down to El Dorado. The Goslings Black Seal (prize from Halloween Cruise) was relegated back to the Dark and Stormy category. In the end, the best sipping rum for 2018 went to Kirk and Sweeny 12 yr. It was very, very pleasant. The whole contest almost came crashing down with the passing of AirBoss XS Apertif. Airboss has taken to converting regular rum to sipping rum by adding spices and then cask aging. They are getting the hang of it. This year entry was a French dessert style rum based on their heavy drinking in Martinique. Sweet with Vanilla and cinnamon it was very different from the rest of the offerings. Frankly, we all liked it but didn t really know what to do with it (besides drinking it) so we awarded it the people s choice award. Nicely done and I can t wait to see what next year s offering is. Given the tastings, the departure for the Saturday Dinghy tour was pushed back to 10:30ish. Susan of Lazy Susan wanted to see if we could find the Cemetery on Fakahatchee. (Spoiler alert: we didn t) We did however have an adventure. Unfortunately, my slow dinghy held the crowd back they would have gone ahead but I had the map. While my top fishing spots map of the ten thousand islands did get us there, by the time we had gone the 5.5 miles we were in no mood to clamber through the dense, Irma rearranged underbrush in search of dead people we didn t know. So we landed (harder than you would think given the oysters) viewed the cisterns, had lunch and returned. We can say we have been there but I am guessing next year s dinghy excursion will go elsewhere. Thanks to Joe s Towing (I Sheet You Not) for being the sag wagon. Anytime you get that many dinghies together, someone is bound to have an issue or 2. Safely back we gathered for happy hour/potluck o n t h e b e a c h. By Sunday the crowd had thinned with some heading back and some using this cruise as a jump off for Marathon, Key West and other points southier. Trust Me!!!, Airboss, Lionheart went in search of a Beach while Lazy Susan Points South Cruise Report tinkered with their dinghy motor. Trust Me!!! Landed on a new beach on the east end of White Horse. Irma has cleared a nice spot. Since we had the only beach umbrella we attracted the crowd. Lunch, a nap and happy hour on Airboss where we retested the winning rums wrapped it up. Trust Me!!! sailed home Monday (Marco to Ft Myer beach motor sailing under the cruising r e a c h e r ). Navigation Notes: City Dock in Naples is newly reopened and worth putting back on your list. The Big Marco River seems about the same as always- we had a +1.2 tide and saw a minimum 5.2. The challenges are at the bridge in Marco and Coon Key Pass as before. Though both Marco and Goodland are still showing Irma effects, I saw no changes in expected depths or debris in the waterways. Lots of stripped trees and a few boats in the bushes by Goodland. Goodland looked a lot worse for the wear than Marco. We did not go to Everglades City but Ned (Passion III) reports no new issues or problems with that channel. Kim Brown s/v Trust Me

DECEMBER CMCS Chowder Chatter May, 2018 Page 7 Membership and Recruitment Membership and Recruitment Chairperson Cathy Friedel Hi Members! eral meeting was a big success. We saw lots of new faces including new member Miles and Suzanne Hutchinson. I also noticed how our new members were eager to pitch in and help with the event. I m writing to you from the beautiful warm and sunny Marathon Key. Another month has gone by and we re enjoying the early warm weather that promises Summer will soon be here. O u r G r i l l n i ght g e n - Two new members joined us that evening. Say a big welcome to Jack and Claudette Pesti. They keep their boat up north in Ohio. They re here in Cape Coral from September through May. Look for them at our land based events. They are friends with Glen and Sigrid Diedrickson who I m sure encouraged them to join. Kudos to Glen and Sigrid. As always I says volunteering to help and participation is how we form new friendships within the club. See you next month, Fair winds and following seas, Cathy Friedel Fleet Recruiter s/v Ambiance Liberty Ashore Liberty Ashore Chairpersons Wendy Cook and Julie Long The Tuesday night April Membership Meeting & Grill Night rocked! Mother Nature blessed us with a breezy warm day so the temperature in the CCYC Pavilion was perfect. Our skilled set-up crew came out early and flexed their muscles as we had to move a lot of tables around! Wrestling with the fresh breeze to get the tablecloths on proved to be at least a 3-person job. Carol Pim and Tom Papia started the process. Luckily, when it was time for Tom to attend to the grill, Bob and Cathy Friedel joined the team, and soon they overcame the windy conditions and had all the tablecloths secured! Michael Caine stepped up and volunteered to slice the tomatoes and onions (Julie and I didn t want our mascara to run!) By the time CMCS members 7

CMCS Chowder Chatter May, 2018 Page 9 Edison Sailing Center News Sails, Scholarships, Sydney, & Sales Edison Sailing Center has been the sailing equivalent of the Energizer Bunny the first quarter of 2018! We have much to share with you: many of you met Sydney Monahan at the December meeting. Sailor- Daughter of multihull sailor Art Monahan (& Denise), Sydney s journey along the sailing continuum continues to rise like we wish the Dow would! Putting 110% into whatever she focuses on, not only has Sydney been an exceptional Opti Green Fleet Coach ( highest retention rate of Green Fleeters since the mid 80 s), she was the youngest coach to attend both US Sailing s Coaching Conference in Miami, as well as US Sailing s Leadership Forum in February. Her participation in ESC s back-to-back Doris Colgate Junior Women s Clinics was followed with an opportunity to attend a foiling training at Oakcliff (managed & directed by America s Cup & Whitbread sailor Dawn Riley). Continuing to sail in Laser championship events, Sydney just received word that she s been invited to sail the Newport-Bermuda race this summer. CMCS s youth investment has provided part of the financial support for her to have these amazing experiences! Thanks to Marla Parker and Summerset, the summer youth grants for sailing are off to a great start. Half of the youth grants have already been awarded. ESC is grateful to Marla for her navigation through paperwork, parents and programs. In an effort to provide as many opportunities for youth as possible and to help meet the high demand for youth grants, we have agreed that families may request a youth grant for two years; thereafter, requests would be on a space-available basis. Did you know that ESC accepts donations of boats and boating equipment? Some donated boats have become integral vessels in our flotilla, providing adventure sailing opportunities to the Dry Tortugas and our local barrier islands, or to help with teaching adults how to sail; others have provided significant dollars in sales to support our programs. Speaking of programs, between late August and mid-may, ESC offers a school year program in Optis, Lasers & Club 420s; a high school sailing program in area high schools as part of ISAA/SAISA; community sailing days three times a year; outreach programs for The Q, STARs and scouts; partners with two Sea Scout troops; provides clean-ups for the islands in the River; and offers eight weeks of summer programs that also include a separate sailing camp at The Mound House (FM Beach), a week of programs for Canterbury students, and this year will welcome a large Girl Scout troop for one week. Looking ahead to , ESC plans to formalize opportunities for students with disabilities to sail in our Junior Olympic regatta (October) and advance our Junior Big Boat program to put more experienced youth sailors on keelboats teaching foredeck work, navigation and helm skills (here s your future race crew!) 9 Stephanie Webb Edison Sailing Center US Sailing Regional Training Coordinator Project Reach National Faculty Florida Sailing Association Secretary/Treasurer Hoist the sails of choice to harness the winds of joy.
