History of opening day in boating "were my search words in Bing. I needed to educate myself in this event. I figured as much opening day recognizes Spring is in the air and the waters are beckoning to us. The search brought up headlines ranging from opening day in various fishing events to opening day on some reality show. Back in Illinois, a city celebrates opening day in regards to their mules and the canal systems. In my home state of Michigan, opening day is not as happy due to the low lake levels. But if you are a history buff of boat wrecks, this is prime time to walk through the wreckages that are becoming exposed on the shorelines. Seattle and every other city on the Sound take pride in their opening day with celebrations of local boats, engineering accomplishments, or anniversaries. Of course, SF Bay has celebrations starting from Opening Day throughout the year with the AC races. Faye Roberts 2013 SSC Commodore As for our own Stockton Sailing Club, we will have a full day of events on May 19th, starting with the Swap Meet at the crack of dawn, a pancake breakfast prepared by the Junior Sailors, and Blessing of the boats and judging for the best decorated boats. The Coast Guard Auxiliary will be on hand to give boat inspections for safety details. The Social and Cruise Committee is hard at work composing a day of activities for members and will welcome all helping hands. It s a great opportunity to reconnect with friends and members after our winter season. Also it s a great opportunity to learn about the club while you volunteer in any of these activities. Opening Day is what we make it!!! It has been brought to my attention to alert boat owners the importance of using spring lines while in the slip. We do have surges that come into our marina affecting how your boat moves within the slip. This can easily be handled with the use of spring line(s). If you are not sure how to use them, I found a description on-line (fancy that) Some of our boats have long pulpits causing the bow to overhang the slip. Now walking down the dock, that width has been compromised making it difficult or hazardous to walk or maneuver with a loaded dock cart. I can see the concern of the member who alerted me to this. We will have Dynamite tied with a spring line from now on. Another concern I want to pass on is how we treat the club house. It s our home away from home but shouldn t be left in a mess or used in a way that would offend other members. And as always, please clean up after yourself. 3 FAST FACTS Who: Don Quinly What: 40th Annual STR When: Friday 6/22/12 One Boats Perspective Sweets III Cal nd place Nine boats signed up for the 40th South Tower Race Eight made it to the line. Pre-race, I need some Ibuprofen; it s going to be a long day, or two. Our new friend and unknown crewmember Fred, (later known as big foot) said I ll make a run to the store and get some. Thanks! Five minutes to the gun, no wind and we re two boats lengths on the wrong side of the line. One minute, half a boat length. The crew s urging to scull, faster. A Cal 2-27 at 7,000 lbs. PHRF for this race 213 doesn t Scull very well. 20 seconds, turning the boat to get sideways and, maybe, squeeze bye, someone on the bank yells clear and the gun goes off. No wind for the first ten minutes then it jumps to twenty knots plus. Shorten sail. We re doing hull-speed to wind healing 30degrees plus with a reefed main and a 90% jib. We were doing well just behind the bigger boats and comfortable ahead of the rest after two hours of the start. I think it s nervous energy but my legs are real tired. Relax it s gonna be a long race. I need a break so I called for each crew to take two-hour tricks at the helm and trimming. (Selftacking jib sure saves the crew) I don t feel that great, maybe laying down for a few minutes will help. V-berth pinched between two spinnaker bags as the boat heals from side to side at 30 plus degrees doesn t make sleeping easy but I m getting rest. Two hours later I get up feeling groggy. I make lunch and hand out waters. I need to sit down. Maybe I ve pinched something in my back is why I feel goofy. I ll take some more Ibuprofen. Dump two in my hand and glance at the bottle. Yes, Ibuprofen PM. Sleep medicine. What! The new guy drugged the skipper. During my rest we fell to last but had a couple of boats still in site. A long site. Let s open up and get some power. We worked it, and before dark, yeah, gaining a little. Pitch black Suisun bay, don t know were the fleet is and out of the blue with a crew of yelling YeHahs, Black fin, a ranger 22, came screaming fifteen feet off our stern. OK, we re still in the race. Just about the time we haven t seen them and think we ve shook em off, here they d come again all night, great winds, great currents, little water coming over the bow except for the minor splashes and playing with a competitor. Great wind all the way to the Carqueniz Bridge then it slowly started dying. By the time we got to the Richmond Bridge we were doing about 2.5 knots through the water but we did have the current with us. When we were trying to make the turn into Raccoon Straits the sails were barely filled and we re Crabbing at a 45degree angle not knowing what way of the Island the tide is going to take us. ½ way to Angel from the Tiburon the slightest of breezes lifted us into Raccoon Straits. We rounded Blackaller Buoy at 08:20 Saturday. Set a spinnaker and had a good breeze towards Berkley. Earlier, when we past Richmond Bridge we saw a couple of boats in the Berkley shoals we thought were our fleet. No, must not be, we watched, no, there headed for Alameda, No, Berkeley, Later we found out why as we sat off Richmond with no wind for two hours and twenty minutes. Two Rangers caught us then we all moved to the other side of the bridge and sat for another hour and a half. The entire fleet sat in different holes from three to six hours with no wind. Our crew was trying to nudge into what little shade there was. SF bay in June? It was the warmest I ve ever been on the bay and it s still morning. A slight breeze drifted us through San Pablo Bay then Carquinez Bridge and then, 20+knts of wind. I was convinced come hell or high water we were going to fly the chute all the way to Stockton. The wind kept building. About Port -Chicago hell and highwater hit and after untying a wreck of color wrapped around the for-stay we were under reefed main only still doing well over hull speed. Through the S ss, wind dying, I tell the crew if we can keep at six knots we won t set another spinnaker. Crap, let s set the spinnaker. A couple of things, no depth meter or mastfly light the complete race. When I first came up from my Fred rest, A few things had already been stepped on and now my antenna is trailing the boat in the water, as I eye Big Foot, Duke said I might have broken it Fred s off the hook and can stay a little longer. We had a great Spinnaker run using a red flashlight to see the mast fly the rest of the way to Stockton Sailing Club, finished at 10:15 Saturday night. Crew shared a bottle of wine then a bottle of rum at the clubhouse with a couple of other competitors who were still there. What a great race, it was my first as skipper and will certainly not be my last. Phil Hendrix who I believe was in a great position for a win on his Challenger hit something hard around Benicia and half way through San Pablo bay was taking on water and needed Coast Guard assistance. Thank you Coast Guard, You Rock. Well, he was beating us! OK I ll tell, Abe would give me grief for leaving it out. On the way past Alcatraz I went below to make breakfast. Eggs Benedict, Bacon and croissants. (Or, maybe cold chicken) coffee and Tea for Duke. I noticed someone (I m not saying Big Foot) stepped on the electric faucet handle and ran out all 25 gal of water. Humph, well, I ve got two partial filled gallon jugs and took one of these and made the coffee. Handed a steaming cup to Abe, he took a sip and said weredya get this coffee from I said from the club (a club member roasts coffee for the club and it s very good) He says it tastes funny Irritated, I had to fess up that I had spilled the coffee and scooped up what I could from the counter, sink and floor, problem? He asked me if I had tasted it, I took a sip, Yuck. Picked up the gallon jug and unfortunately we all saw at the same time the jug said Vinegar. I d just remembered cleaning the bilge before we left. Oops! Abe called Bonehead; I asked Duke if he still wants Tea. South Tower Race at 40. What a great race. What a great challenge. Every sailor should want this on their resume. I feel a huge accomplishment for finishing. At the mixer the night before the race, Racers who have done the STR in the past, many have done it multiple time and I believe Dana Badly has done something like 37 of them, were there with there old STR t-shirts and stories of the history. Good time. I want to thank those who first started this race, those who have kept it going, my crew, the volunteers and those stepping up next year. And finally my congratulations to the Plummer family from Vallejo on their 1st place finish. As time goes by I m still high as a kite over the experience and can t wait until next year.

5 The Delta Ditch Run starts in the San Francisco Bay and goes up the Delta and finishes at the Stockton Sailing Club. I In the past this event has attracted over 200 boats with racers from across the country show-ing up for this generally downwind sixty five mile event. This event is the 23nd annual Point Richmond to Stockton Race, also known as the Delta Ditch Run. The first warning will be at 10:25 A. M on Saturday, June 8, The course is from the starting area which is lo-cated between the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and the Brothers Islands, to the finish line at the Stockton Sailing Club. (Cruising Division's first warning will be at 8:30 AM and will start between the flag on the RYC Race Platform to Red #8 in the channel). Qualified Entrants This event is open to boats with a San Francisco Bay or Stockton Sailing Club PHRF rating.. Boats without certificates may have a rating as-signed by the Race Committee provided that their entry is accepted. A cruising division will be available to mono-hulled boats wishing to have a motoring time allowance. This division is open to all cruising yachts. Entrants will receive a four hour motoring allowance. All entrants will race with their full PHRF number. There is no restriction on the number/type of sails to be used. The Cruising Division will be sail-ing for the Frank Dukat Memorial Trophy. A separate division is open to sailing multi-hulls with a minimum design length of seventeen feet or longer and a crew of two or more, that have a valid Bay Area Multi-hull Association (BAMA) rating. At 60 days, all club cards are terminated, including bar and facility use privileges'. SSC Board approval is required prior to club reinstatement. Snack food items are not being rung up and an inventory shortage is noticeable. The general membership is reminded that 12 ounce cups are to be used for beer and soda. (Bring your kayaks, water toys, tunes, favorite snacks) SAILCAMP July 7 - July 13, 2013 * The Camp ends following the awards buffet on Saturday afternoon. The Sail Camp Program is intended for boys and girls ages 8 ½ 14 years of age. Sail Camp teaches a wide range of areas to enhance boat handling techniques and racing skills of junior sailors. Juniors are divided into 4 basic groups: Novice, Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. The Stockton Sailing Club grounds continue to serve as the traditional v e n u e f o r t h e c l i n i c. Juniors will camp within the secure area of the Club, in tents on the lawn. Campers provide their own tents and bedding. SSC bathroom and shower facilities are very nice and available for use. Age appropriate and FUN off-the-water activities will be provided to occupy and entertain the Juniors in the evening hours before lights out. These usually include games, crafts, and more. Applications are accepted first from SSC/RYC/SCYC members/junior members with remaining slots filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications must be COMPLETE to be considered. Space is limited to eighty campers. Juniors will receive: Sailing/Racing instruction on and off the water, fun evening activities, 3 meals per day, a camp memento, and awards for racing excellence and sportsmanship, great new friends and a week of fun. WELCOME JUNIOR SAILORS Junior Commodore, Adam Helms, really came through with helping to have a successful booth at the Earth Day Festival April 21. Adam took great pride in representing the SSC as he spent time, during the week, preparing and cleaning a small boat for display. JUNIORS CORNER The morning of the event, Adam took responsibility for trailering the boat and publicity supplies out to Victory Park. With the help of Sofia DeGuzman, John Canepa, Jackson Faylor, Vanessa Rasmussen, and coordinator of Learn to Sail, Karen Miller set up and manned the booth. I'm sorry if I've left out any names of other Juniors, I was in Richmond with Peter as he is getting his level one sailing instructor certification. Festival goers learned about Learn to sail classes, the Junior Program and boating safety information. Adam was also committed to the Spring Series race day. As soon as the race was over Adam went back to pick up the boat and supplies at the festival. It gives me great pride to see Adam's commitment to being the SSC Junior Commodore, and to the rest of the Juniors who took the time off Sunday to promote our absolutely awesome Club. 8 Unapproved Board Minutes (A) April 9, 2013 CALL TO ORDER: Our sensational Vice Commodore, Gail Gradle, keeping her hand firmly on the tiller, rang the bell with enthusiasm and called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. Present: Gary Eggert, Rear Commodore; John Moyer, Past Commodore; Patty Jacquez, Secretary; John Courtright, Treasurer; William Humphreys, Director; Burt Mohr, Director; Steve Canepa, Director; Chris Shepherd, Director; Charles Sanford, Port Captain; and Suzie Wasieleweski, Club Manager Excused: Faye Roberts, Commodore STANDING BUSINESS: A. Approve April 2013 Agenda: Motion to approve the April 2013 Agenda: Chris Shepherd/ William Humphreys M/S/P. B. Approve March 2013 Board Minutes: Motion to approve the March 2013 Board minutes: John Moyer/ William Humphreys M/S/P. C. Approve February 2013 Financials: After evaluation by John, the February 2013 Financial Statements were distributed to Board members for review and discussion. John noted that he is working on the reclassification of GL codes for repair and maintenance items. Board members were again reminded to use the approved SSC Capital Expenditure Request for all expenditures. Accounts in arrears and late fees for parking spaces were also discussed. Adjustments will be made for late parking space fees. Chris also noted that he is working on development of a long-range maintenance plan. The reinstatement process for club members whose accounts are in arrears was additionally explained. Reminder letters are sent by the office to club members with accounts in arrears at 60 and 90 days. At 60 days all club cards are terminated, including bar and facility use privileges. Club Manager Report: Next, Suzi was called upon to share the upto-the-minute Harbormaster observations and events: Food and beverage purchase was the first item of discussion. Snack food items are not being rung up; and an inventory shortage is noticeable. The general membership is reminded that the 12 ounce cups are to be used for beer and sodas. The 10 ounce drink cups are to be used for mixed drinks. Club members are reminded that empty snack packages and cups may be checked for sailor fingerprints. Beware! The SSC Board next concurred that the Club Manager does not have the authority to negotiate berthing fees or other deals. Sorry mariners, no such luck. Guest s powerboats are welcome under three-day courtesy berthing applied to sailboats reciprocal for PYCA members. Great news! Karen Miller is certified as a small boat instructor and she will run the Learn to Sail program. Suzi reports that not only is Karen on the ball but also on a broad reach! Thank you Karen! The Harbor and Facilities (H&F) Committee will discuss the use of Learn to Sail funds as well as power boat procedures. Recommendations will be brought back to the SSC Board. Remember, you must be checked out by the office and on file to operate the crash boats owned by the SSC. A friendly reminder will be also provided to the membership at the upcoming general meeting. Please be attentive to the club s rules regarding the purchase of alcohol. Alcohol purchased at the club house may not be taken out of the club designated license area. This is to adhere to the California Alcoholic Beverage Control Board laws. There is no take-out privilege. Alcoholic beverages purchased at the bar must stay on the lawn and in Retreat areas. A. Correspondence: A retreat request was received from Paula Almaas. She also presented her retreat request to the SSC Board for November 3 rd. She will finalize the date with the SSC Board on June 1 st. See details below. Jerry and Darlene Sullivan have requested a one-year leave of absence effective March 1, Martin and Martha Flaherty have requested retreat use for the Stockton Pelican Race on June 15, 2013 for 20 to 30 people from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pam Haas submitted her resignation effective January Joshua Williams has requested cruising status effective March Suzie Thomas has submitted her club resignation. Paul Dietrich is waiting to sell his boat. Motion to approve correspondence requests: William Humphreys/ Burt Mohn M/S/P. B. Member and Guest Comments: Paula Almaas, SSC member for 35 years requested the SSC to Save the Date of November 3 rd. Paula is coordinating the American Association of University Women (AAUW) 62nd annual home tour on Sunday, November 3rd. This year's tentative home tour theme is "On the Water." Paula would like to explore the idea of using the SSC retreat area for part of this year's home tour because the club would be a great addition for the theme. The retreat would be used to serve refreshments to home tour guests. The AAUW would provide the food and any set up and clean up. They would also possibly use the retreat area to include a display of gift baskets to raffle off and possibly some vendors selling wares to home tour guests. Paula expects that no more than 50 people would be at the retreat at any given time between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Paula additionally proposed that the SSC could use this opportunity to facilitate its own open house on that date with tours of the club house, information on joining the SSC, and sailboat rides available to those who may be interested. 9 Unapproved Board Minutes (B) April 9, 2013 OLD BUSINESS: A. Stockton Sailing Club Letter of Protest to Notification on B Dock Boat to Sell Alcohol: As follow up to the continuing B Dock narrative and the club s friendly reminder, at the February 2013 meeting it was brought to the SSC Board s attention that an owner of a boat on B Dock had posted signage on his boat to provide notice of intent to sell alcohol using the SSC club address. In an attempt to resolve the issue Faye has spoken with the boat owner and staff at the California State Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board. In addition, Form 501, a protest against alcoholic beverage license application including SSC concerns, has also been filed with the ABC. At the March Board meeting Faye was additionally requested to follow up and send the boat owner a friendly reminder letter asking the boat owner to withdraw his application using the SSC address, as he is in danger of forfeiture of membership and exclusion from harbor berthing. The friendly reminder letter was received by the boat owner and Faye will attend the hearing if necessary. The office will send a copy of the SSC protest and the boat owner s response letter to the SSC attorney. No further action will be taken at this time. B. Discuss H & F Committee Engineering Report The H & F (Harbor and Facilities Committee) has requested discussion of the clubhouse beam replacement. Bids have been received and an engineering structural assessment of dry rot damaged framing has been submitted. The H & F Committee has recommended approval of the Tudor bids for repairs to both the office and the clubhouse. Discuss Reserve Cash Funds for Maintenance and Improvements Chris provided background information and a proposed savings plan for maintenance and repairs. After discussion, it was determined that the plan will be taken to H & F and the FBLI Committee for recommendations. B. Approve Covers for Three Crash Boats The H & F Committee has requested SSC Board approval for three crash boat covers at a cost of $250 per (Pacific Blue) cover. Approve Purchase of New Dock Carts The H & F Committee has requested SSC Board approval of the purchase of new dock carts. Positive comments have been received on the new carts. Due to budgetary constraints however this item is put on hold until the new fiscal year. D. Discuss Delta Doo Dah Discussion of the Delta Doo Dah event was requested. La Donna Bubak, Latitude 38, has proposed a format similar to that of the Pacific Puddle Jump, an event over a fivemonth period in hopes that more than 50 boats will participate. Official sponsors will be listed in the October issue of Latitude 38 as well as the Hosts, Prizes & Swag page. Registration for the Delta Doo Dah opened on Monday April 8 th and runs through August 24 th. Faye will contact La Donna to find out what other club/ marinas are proposing to entertain sailors. The SSC agreed to proceed and make event participants welcome by offering a free Friday night dinner and three free berthing nights. An eye-catching brochure touting the SSC and membership was also recommended. COMMITTEE REPORTS: A. Membership Committee: Adding to the SSC convoy of sailors, Budge announced that Glen and Tammy Jennings have requested membership beginning May 1, Motion to approve new membership William Humphreys / Burt Mohr M/S/P. B. Harbor & Facilities (H&F) Committee: The H&F Committee meeting of April 4 th was attended by Phil Hendrix, Marvin McDougal, Charles Sanford, Randy Garret, Jim Painter, Lila Primm, Chris Shepherd, Linda Driver and John Courtright. With general responsibility for planning, operation and maintenance of the SSC facilities, the H & F Committee report includes the additional ongoing maintenance and repair efforts: A Dock: Work on A Dock by the Staff will be going forward replacing the wood tie rail with the ring system discussed at March's meeting and laying new carpet. Landscape Contract: Valley landscape contract was reviewed by Ron and it appears it may be too pricey. Another bid has been received for about $200 a month less than the current contract. Well and Sprinkler System: The combination of the well and the water delivery plumbing needs attention. Lawn zones 3 and 5 have inadequate pressure. We know there is sand in the pipe between the well and the pressure tank. Pipe need to be cleaned and a sand trap installed. Phil Hendrix reported that some of the pipe delivering water to the sprinkler heads may be of inadequate diameter. Perhaps a new landscape contract can include the contractor taking care of these issues and doing regular checks on the sprinkler heads etc. H Dock: Lila reported on issues with H Dock including the need to replace the ends and rub rails. This is on the Staff's to do list and should be next after the work is finished on A and B Docks. C. Finance Budget Legal and Insurance (FBLI) Committee: No report.

Rules and Policies Committee: The first reading of the new policy related to Friday night dinners was approved. F. Social and Cruise Committee: Steve reported on the future adrenaline pumping activities and social events. Steve began by asking the Board to approve a $50 credit each for the upcoming Ladies Luncheon and Opening Day activities. The Ladies Day Luncheon on May 11 th features the celebrated chef, Richard Wright. The Ladies Day Luncheon theme is Come Sail Away. Help is requested in the kitchen and with serving. Opening Day boasts a myriad of fun filled aquatic activity. Boat show tours, U.S. Coast Guard vessel inspections, paddle boat races, booths, a swap meet, dunk tank, and raffle are planned.
