May your thoughts be as glad as the shamrocks, may your heart be as light as a song, may each day bring you bright, happy hours that stay with you all the year long. Popular Irish blessing. If you were lucky to have President's day off and time to sail, it was a very invigorating day. Several members had an impromptu race from the club to light 33. It s coming to that exciting time of the sailing RACING!!! Tony Holt, our new regatta chairman is going full force with energy and enthusiasm towards a successful series. Racing isn t for everybody nor is it everything to sailing but it s probably one sport/hobby that is improved with a bit of competition thrown in. Opening Day will be May 18 which won t conflict with the Faye Roberts 2013 SSC Commodore Asparagus Festival (April 26-28). Thank goodness!!! Hopefully, everyone will have May 18 free to attend all the fun and informational events planned. If you d like to see something special for that day please contact Jill Humphrey, the social/ cruise chairperson. I noticed on our new website that there is a spot under club events to volunteer. This would be the prime spot to let us know you are available. Here s my pitch to host a Friday night dinner... Honestly, it s the easiest way to make new friends and get a round of applause for your special dish. It ll be my wish to have the full year spoken full come the end of March. I m rubbing my magic lamp now as you read this!!! Marvin McDougal is the Dock Talk editor. He'd be happy to take your articles for future newsletters. I 'll bet there are some aspiring authors who would like to share their sailing stories of any sort. That also goes for any presentations that members would like to give for an evening event. Let me know about the possibility of planning a date. We are so lucky to live in California and be able to sail year round. Back in Michigan, the boats are hauled out and wrapped. I m not sure that the lakes freeze hard enough to drive on like when I was a kid but the snow and ice that go with the great lakes area make me happy I m here. 3 Greg Dyers INTRUDER COMING TO THE FINISH! 3rd Monohaul across the line. 1st in the Sport Division Crewed by: Chris Shepherd and former junior member, Tom Warren The beautiful, blue glass trophy setting on the table as one walks into the clubhouse demands more than a casual glance. It reflects the woman who it memorializes, Joan Harp. She was a long time member and very active in racing. She, along with other women racers, would take the new women sailors under her wing, encourage them to come out on Saturdays, and get them on board boats for racing the Ladies Series. In 1999, she passed away. Her husband, Cecil Harp established this award in her memory to recognize outstanding females who have participated in the racing programs at the Stockton Sailing Club. This year the Joan Harp Award went to Annie Bliss. Recently she and I had lunch and a short interview. She s a tall, striking blond woman with a ready smile. She recently joined the SSC by way of the Stockton Rowing Club, Tom Lueck and owning her own Laser. With her late husband, they would take the Laser to Rancho Seco, a no wake reservoir. With only drawings of where lines should go but no knowledge of their purpose, they would set sail, literally sailing by the seat of their pants. The knock downs didn t discourage her but only whetted her appetite for more adventure. As a member of the rowing club, she was aware of the SSC and wandered in one day to inquire about selling her Laser. She also mentioned she was game to crew and asked how could that happen. The most logical answer to that would be Tom Lueck with Sir Leansalot. What is interesting at this point, she knew of Sir Leansalot because she had a photo hanging in her work locker for inspiration. Goes to show, it s a small world. Racing with Tom is not for the faint at heart. Annie has held her own, learning while on the course, and working in the various positions. She enjoys foredeck, which again is not for the faint of heart. She s raced with Ray Lopez and Adam Helms, two totally different boats and skippers. From each, she learned the importance of maintaining a safe boat, multitasking, and having confidence in the boat performance. Her sailing dreams would be to charter a well crewed boat in tropical waters, the antithesis of Two Years before the Mast. She has read this and appreciates the author s telling of the life of the common sailor and the conditions on board a brig in the early 1800 s. We tend to connect to these stories, in one way or another which influences our desires to make our own journeys. Annie has raced with Tom for 5 years and last year did all the races that he campaigned. This surely earned her name to be added to the other women sailors of the Joan Harp Award.
