Commodore s Corner 2-O-4! 2-O-4! 2-O-4! Who s ready for sailing!?!?!?! Rain or shine, sleet or flurries cannot stop the wind from filling our sails! It is time to lace up that tramp and get training for Madcatter 39! The forum is busy with activity, like our first fleet race and our first community outings building a shack. Many of you may not know this, but a shed is being built at Therre s launch so its sailors have a place to secure their sails, reduce the number of trailers at Therre s, make room for more Hobies, and a changing room that is not a Blue Bowl! Thanks to Adam Atherton for designing and leading Operation Shack-O-Lot! As a resident at Therre s launch I would like to thank all those who have come with their drills, jokes, and sweat. Many volunteers do not have a Hobie at Therre s, but showed their support in something that will make Fleet a stronger, better, and of course cooler organization! Fleet 204 continues to amaze me. What will they come up with next?!?!?! See you next meeting at Borios! Commodore Hondo 2015 Sailing Event Schedule May 9 The Madhatter! 2 Submitted by Bruce Krupke Fleet 204 Meeting Minutes April 14, 2015 The meeting called to order at 7:30 pm at Borio s Restaurant upper room by Commodore Therese Straigis. She welcomed everyone to the meeting. There were 32 members in attendance. Safety is no Accident Report by Mimi Appel. Road Warrior was the topic. When traveling to a sailing event, remember that trailering safety is important. Caravanning with other regatta racers is important and a safe way to travel. You can help each other stay awake at night on that long drive back. Switch drivers every 3-4 hours at most. Trailer lights should be inspected a few days before leaving. Also, cables, chains, extensions, and tires need to be inspected. If you need to replace them, remember that all of these things can be purchased at our favorite store, Boat Works Ltd.! Trailer earings need to be lubed and checked. You don t want to have to make repairs broken down on the road, ask Bob Longo. Did you remember to register your trailer, if so, is the registration actually in your car? You could put a copy in your toolbox, just to make sure that you have it with the trailer. What about your mast, are you tying it down well? Tom Korz spotted some ratcheted tie downs while at Mid Winter s East. He didn t get a picture of them, but highly recommended them. Tying down your boat properly is important. Start with a bowline knot using the cinch, pinch, and inch method. Use a loose half hitch at the other end. When traveling, check your tie downs and knots at each stop you make. It is a good idea to tie the lines together; it makes the lines stronger. Be sure to have a good jack and lug wrench, in case you blow a tire. Finally, be sure to have some good duct tape; it can come in handy! Commodore Straigis thanked Mimi for this timely and pertinent Safety report and then asked for the Secretary s report. Secretary s Report: Bruce Krupke reported he provided the minutes from our March Fleet meeting which were ed to Fluffy White and were printed in the newsletter by Publisher Adam Atherton. There was a motion to dispense with the reading of the minutes, seconded, carried. Bruce also passed around the July 2014 newsletter and asked everyone to check their contact information to help us update any changes. If you didn t make the meeting and have a copy of July s newsletter, please check your info, or if you ve had any changes let Bruce or Bill Whalen know, so that our records will be accurate. 2
Treasurer s Report: Dr. Bill Whalen reported our finances are in really good condition. Dues are now overdue! If you haven t paid them, please get them in ASAP. It s only $50 per family. Please, Mail your membership dues check to Dr. Whalen 8254 Honeysuckle Drive, Liverpool, NY 13090, make them out to Hobie Cat Fleet 204. Or, you and pay cash at the next meeting. It is the best deal this side of Oneida Lake! Make your checks out to Hobie Cat Fleet 204 and mail them to Dr. Bill Whalen, his address is at the end of the newsletter. There was a motion to accept the Treasurer s report, seconded, carried. Division 16 Report: Adam Atherton, our Division Chair Division chairman reported all regattas are ready to go. The Hobie 14 Championships will be in Mississauga Ontario. Training Coordinator Report Herb and Sharon James reported the next chalk talk meeting will be Tuesday, April 21 at their house starting at 7:30, starts and angles will be the topic. Bring your own refreshments. Everyone is welcome to participate. Past Regatta Report: The Mid Winters East Regatta was held on April in Ocean Springs, MS. It was a great venue, fantastic food and organizers were very welcoming. There was good sailing and wind on Thursday. There were 4 races on Friday. Saturday was light racing. There was one race on Sunday. Nick and Laurence Liebel from Ontario took first place, Dan Borg took 2nd. Sue Korzeniewski came in 3rd; Bill Jeffers and Karen Grisko took 5th, Tom Korzeniewski and daughter Erica took 8th place, congratulations to our Fleet members! Congrats to Division 16, taking the top three spots!! All results are on our website. They are talking about holding Mid Winters East at this location for the next three years. 3
Future Regattas The annual Fleet Come Sail with Us Day will be Saturday June 6 starting at 11am. We invite contacts made at the Boat Show in February to attend along with Fleet friends who might have an interest in Hobie Cat sailing. Start to spread the word and send out invites. If someone wants to attend, they should RSVP with Bob Longo or Bruce Krupke. For full info, a copy of the Sail Day flyer is on our website (Editor s Note: And in this newsletter!). Volunteers for some job will be needed; we ll finalize everything at our next Fleet meeting. Ken Knapp reported Hooper s Harbor in Chamount Bay near Watertown, NY is still snowed in and hasn t been scouted out. He will look into and check out the venue. We may have a sail day sometime around the last weekend in August. Schroon Lake outing. Bruce Krupke and Gary Repko reported they scouted out Schroon Lake, NY, which is north of Lake George in the Adirondacks. The Town would like to host a future Hobie Cat regatta. They reported there is a very good launch, beach and facilities for a regatta. The town has places to eat, stay and there are a couple of small breweries. Bruce and Gary are suggesting we have a one day sail around, let the Town have a dry run this year with the possibility of setting up a Division points regatta in Dates for the sail around were discussed. There was support for a July date, although after the meeting it was learned the Town of Schroon would like to host us on Saturday August 15th. More information will follow soon, keep the date open. As part of the day s activities we might hold a public meet and greet to promote Hobie Cat sailing. National Report Northeast Hobie 16 Championships will be in September, Pensacola, FL. In September. Social Report The Fleet hosts a tune up day prior to Madcatter called Madhatter. It is a practice session to get the cobwebs out to help get ready to race. It will be conducted by Herb James on Saturday May 9th. It is held on Oneida Lake where we hold Fleet races and usually starts after lunch, depending on wind and weather conditions. Everyone is invited to participate, even if you aren t planning on sailing in Madcatter. It will help you improve your sailing skills. Watch the Forum for more final last minute info. Also, don t forget, after Madhatter practice, the Party will be held at Rob and Darcy Jerry s house in Cicero (6219 Diffin Road). You must wear a hat of your choice, any kind, style, color, size, or you will be required to.well, you don t want to find out, just wear a hat! Remember we don t call 4
it Madhatter for nothing. Watch the website and Forum more details. All Fleet members and a guest are invited. Bring a dish or some item to share. Also, the Jerrys want you to know that they have dogs, in case you are allergic. Madcatter 39 Commodore Straigis reviewed all committees and duties for Madcatter 39. All Fleet members are encouraged to volunteer to help with some part of the regatta. She invited all Fleet members to race, no matter what your experience level is: Beginners and C Fleeters will be coached and mentored. Rob Jerry and Bob Longo will assist C Fleeters at Madcatter to help with question and racing. Bruce Krupke reported sponsors are coming in, slowly. He said there will be some new full sponsors including Madea Vodka brought in by Yong Zhang. They will sponsor a cocktail party on Friday night. Please help by finding one sponsor. A sponsor sign up form is on our website and they have to be in by May 5 to allow enough time to get logos on hull stickers and added to the race program. Sue Korzeniewski reported there may be a melding of the GEP (guest expert program) on Friday May 15 in the morning. There will be a long distance race in the afternoon. Again, everyone is invited to participate and will be held at Oneida Shores County Park. Bob Longo reported the Vintage Party Gras boat committee is ready to host anyone who wants to bring a Hobie Cat to the regatta for the fun of it. It doesn t matter the age of the Hobie, although it will be cool to see if we can get some older models to participate. Info about how to participate in the Vintage Party Gras class can be found in the Madcatter section of our website. If you have questions, contact Bob Longo. Mike Walker from Toronto will be the Madcatter PRO. There was a discussion about do we have complete racing flags. Adam Atherton has all the Division flags in his possession. Extra marks will be obtained from neighboring clubs. 5
New, Old and Other Business Tom Korzeniewski reported Fleet member Steve Wiehl was the winner of the ice off the Lake contest. Steve picked April 13th. It is rumored he is very psychic!
