11 10 Phrases You Never Knew Came From Sailing by Deb Pepe A clean bill of health According to dictionary.com this phrase derives from the days when the crew of ocean going ships might be a little less than hygienic, so they needed to present a certificate, carried by a ship, attesting to the presence or absence of infectious diseases among the ship s crew and at the port from which it has come. Feeling Blue How often do you hear people talking about feeling blue or have the blues? An entire genre of music comes from this phrase. Who knew that came from the world of sailing? See-the-sea.org explains the popular phrase comes from a custom that was practiced when a ship lost its captain during a voyage. The ship would fly blue flags and have a blue band painted along her hull when she returned to port. Pipe down Parents have been screaming pipe down to their kids forever, but where d o e s t h a t a c t u a l l y c o m e f r o m? Apparently, Pipe Down was the last signal from the Bosun s pipe each day, which meant lights-out, quiet down, time to go to bed. Over a barrel We all know when someone has you over a barrel things aren t going well. This saying is used all the time these days to indicate being severely compromised, but it began in the most literal way. Sailor crew would sometimes be punished for their misgivings and that involved being tied over a cannon barrel and whipped. It s no wonder that one stuck around. Yikes. Toe the line Perhaps you ve been at work and your boss has scowled at you and said, toe the line, or you re gone. If this has happened to you, we are sorry, that sounds like a horrible work environment. But, if you were wondering about the origins of his demand, it s an old naval expression that refers to a ship s crew who would be called to gather and form a line with their toes all touching a given seam (or line) of the deck planking. By and Large Folks say this one all the time to refer to the big picture. By and large, ASA is the most awesome organization in existence something like that. This term got started on a sailboat with the word by meaning into the wind and large meaning off the wind. So sailors would say: By and large this ship handles quite nicely. Loose cannon Everyone has known a few people who are loose cannons unpredictable and d a n g e r o u s o n s o m e l e v e l. N o t surprisingly the term comes from when a ship s cannon would come loose from it s lashing. The big dangerous thing would be sliding all over the place making for some uncomfortable time on deck trying to get that bad boy back in its spot. A square meal People often talk about getting three square meals a day what the hell is a square meal? It s actually quite simple the wooden plates back in the days of tall ships were square. Hand over fist These days this phrase usually refers to making a bunch of money, although it can refer to anything happening fast and in abundance. It comes from a more literal origin sailors would be tugging at lines as fast as they could, hand over fist, to trim sheets and raise sails. Son of a gun It s amazing that this phrase has lasted so long. Back in the day, as you might imagine, sailors were often less than virtuous and every once in a while a lady friend of a crewman might give birth to a child on the ship. A good spot for this sort of thing was between the guns on the gun deck. Now let s say this little rascal i s n t c l a i m e d b y a n y o f t h e aforementioned sleazy sailors, this little grommet would sometimes be called a son of a gun.

13 Members in the News John Shkor Honored Hilton Head Island Mayor David Bennett will host his semi-annual "Honored Islander Award" dinner at 6 p.m. Oct. 12 at Hudson's Seafood House on the Docks on Squire Pope Road. The honored islanders include John Shkor, Luther Strayer III, Loretta Warden, Tim Drake and Logan Fettes, who were presented with their awards before Town Council in July and September.

14 Regatta Weekend brings Lowcountry boat lovers together We have a dedicated group of sailing lovers who race for the fun of it, but of course, we all have our competitive streaks, said Regatta Weekend chairman Jim Landis. It has been a great way for so many islanders to meet each other, but we also open up the race to the public, because we very much want to share our passion and help create a new generation of boating diehards. The races start and finish between Harbour Town and Haig Point. Each regatta is a series of three to four races that are 30 to 45 minutes long along a 1- to 2-mile course set up in either a cigar-shaped constant circle or a triangular buoyed course. The races are scored using a performance handicap rating formula. While golf handicaps measure each golfer s performance against the others, the regatta handicap measures each boat s characteristics against the others. It equals out boat size, number of sails and a twopropeller versus a three-propeller boat. That way, a Harbor 20 (footer) can be scored against a 42-foot Catalina that obviously has more power but also more weight to carry, Landis said. The scoring system helps create a level playing field. Then it becomes all about the abilities of the sailor. This year is the 45th anniversary of the Harbour Town Cup, first held in 1970 by the Hilton Head Sailing Club, a group that met under the Liberty Oak in Harbour Town. Over time, the club has widened its charter beyond sailing to including power boat owners and all friends of boating. The group s clubhouse and grounds are located in the Palmetto Bay complex. The Harbour Town Cup trophy was donated by Sea Pines and has historically been awarded to the fastest boat in handicap-adjusted time of all the fleets competing. The Calibogue Cup was started in 1971 and awards two trophies each year, one for Class A and one for Class B. Class A is for boats flying spinnakers and Class B consists of those not equipped with spinnakers. Landis said the event typically draws around 20 to 25 boats from Savannah to Charleston. Many of the competitors are racing in the island waters throughout the year: The Regatta Weekend is the culmination of roughly 10 to 12 races held throughout the year by various plantation boating clubs that all join under the Yacht Club of Hilton Head Island umbrella. We ll get a group of Flying Scots that will race against each other, a group of Harbor 20s out of the South Carolina Yacht Club that will battle each other, and then there s the Catalina 42s and Bonitos that will typically launch together, Landis said. It s quite a variety of boat styles and racing styles. It s a lot of fun to be racing but we are really hoping that fans will join in. They are beautiful vessels, and it s quite exciting to watch the races unfold. The best viewing is from the docks at Harbour Town, where yacht club members will be on hand to help newcomers learn about the boats and the traditions of regatta racing. Regatta participation has been on the rise after a downturn in the sport in the early 2000s. While many might think that yachting is for older generations, Landis said that it s truly a lifetime activity. It s something I picked up in the middle of my career as a means to relax after a stressful week, said Landis, a retired international banker with Citibank who first began sailing while living in Puerto Rico. Living by the sea, it s just a natural activity. We have members who picked it up in their 20s and are going strong into their 80s. Once you get hooked to sailing, it s something few ever want to let go. Regatta Weekend races begin at noon Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday, with the awards and closing ceremony held under the Liberty Oak late Sunday afternoon. For more information, call or visit
