3 Commentary by the Commodore You can tell the seasons are changing by the earlier sunsets and heavier rum drinks at the bar. August finished up successfully with our popular island Series and the Tripoint race, a great time for all racers put on by our own team (and thanks again). Particularly, Joe Vetrano was awarded the Golden Anchor at our August general meeting, for his unstinting support of the race committee in the program. This month, we've moved our general meeting and board meeting to September 20, so that we can get together for a club cruise on the weekend of September 27 to Smugglers Cove, led by our Rear Commodore and cruise chair Chuck Braffett. Please join us for the overnight (or a day cruise) if you can: if you're a skipper, contact Chuck; if you just like to ride along, contact any of us, and we'll see if we can hook you up. See you on the water (or on the rocks). Jamie Clark PBYC Commodore
4 Friends, Let's all say goodbye to summer! The high surf in August from Hurricane Marie is all but a small puddle at McGrath State Park now. Did you know September brings us the second of the two equinoxes every year a day when the sunshine aims most directly on the equator and the light of day and the dark of night are nearly equal? In the northern hemisphere we have the autumnal (fall) equinox while the southern hemisphere experiences the vernal (spring) equinox. Mark your calendars for September 22 at 7:29 p.m. PDT when the sun crosses an imaginary line above the earth's equator. It is the summer's great last heat, It is the fall's first chill: They meet. Sarah Morgan Bryan Piatt Back here in Ventura Harbor, far, far away from the equator we experienced a fantastic August at PBYC! I hope you were able to come by and enjoy the club. By all accounts we had a very successful Island Series in 2014, led by our Senior Staff Commodore Richard Countess and Staff Commodore Su Countess. A dedicated group of usual suspects provided non-stop support for these two racing eagles. To name all the participants who provided support would not be fair. But, every man or women who took a station on the committee boat, galley, bar, finish line, Skipper's meeting, cleanup, trophy presentation, etc. are to share in this congratulatory message! Congratulations and Thank you! I was present for the Tri-Point awards on Sunday, August 17th and talked with two skippers from the Santa Barbara Yacht Club, who happen to be very competitive big boat racers. They were very complimentary of our club's racing program. These were two gentlemen who sincerely appreciated our clubs efforts. Compliments coming from sailors of their caliber made me feel very proud of all of you. With it's rich ocean racing history, we can be proud to call PBYC our yacht club. In case you missed it, at the August member's meeting we were pleased to hear from member Jeff Olmstead about his trip to the Port of Los Angeles for the Tall Ships Festival, LA It is billed as the greatest spectacle on the Pacific! Jeff treated those in attendance to a superb photo tour of the Festival. Pictures even included one of the giant rubber duck! Not only did the festival include the historic battleship USS Iowa but it also showcased domestic and international ships, including some of the From the Vice Commodore most acclaimed worldwide, such as the tall ships from the City of Los Angeles, the twin brigantines - Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson. Jeff did a great job of taking pictures! Commodore Jamie Clark and wife, Maura O'Connor with the assistance of gourmet Karen Stager, hosted the dinner for the August meeting. Jamie and Maura prepared boeuf carbonnnade à la flamande, i.e., Flemish Beef and Beer Stew. A meal we should all aspire to cook! Carbonnnade relies on the hearty flavor of Belgian beer, unlike popular French dishes, which use wine for a liquid. What really gives Carbonnnade its distinctive character, besides all the goodness of beer, bacon, caramelized onion, garlic, thyme, tarragon and butter, is the addition of brown sugar and cider vinegar. A killer sweet-sour combination that is the secret ingredients of this fabulous dish the three of them prepared for our members. If you weren't there, you missed it. Farmer's market produce, grass fed beef - the whole enchilada, err - boeuf. Dinner was followed by apple tart using home-grown apples from Richard and Su's apple tree; and, a chocolate brownie sheet cake kind of dessert-thing which was equally as good. Wow, food is fun! Huh? If it has been awhile since you were at the club, please join us in September. Since there are many of you who were not at the club in August, we who were there decided to award the fouled prop to those of you who were not in attendance! It was all in great fun with a hint to you to come out to your club! We miss you! Come over! September's dinner will be prepared by bar manager Rob Skaar. I will bet it will be great, knowing Rob. Come join us, won't you? Well, that is it for now, Dorothy and I offer you our best during the month of September. Fair winds and following seas my friends! With warmest regards, Jim Adriansen J PBYC Vice Commodore
5 Race Report Richard Countess TRI-POINT OCEAN RACE & ISLAND SERIES th We had 32 participants in the 34 annual Tri-point th Ocean race held on August 16 that included 12 beach cats some from as far away as Texas and Arizona. PK Edwards and son Vance sailed their Catalina 42 WIND DANCER (with a handicap of 99) to a first place finish in the 7-boat spinnaker A fleet, beating the second place boat, PREVAIL, a 52' Santa Cruz (with a handicap of minus 12) by almost nine minutes. Mike Hopper's J22 MAJIC DRAGON had the best corrected time in the 7-boat spinnaker B fleet. However, Mike graciously withdrew from the race after discovering that the sail maker who had built his spinnaker had built the sail to the wrong dimensions. Verne Haller's R'Escape took a second in the non-spinnaker fleet; and Bill Gibb's AFTERBURNER took first place in the ORCA fleet. Even though the wind never exceeded 12 knots, the wind held all day and both AFTERBURNER and Tom Parker's Reichel Pugh 68 TAXI DANCER (with a handicap of minus 81) established new course records for the 34 nm race. AB's elapsed time was 2:24:24 and TD's elapsed time was 3:41:19. The perpetual trophy winners were Deke Klatt's J24 JADED for the spinnaker boats, Brent Swanson's Islander 29 VELERO for the nonspinnaker boats, and Stacey Peterson on Randy Alcorn's Cal 2-29 OUT PATIENT for the top woman skipper. The full race results are posted on PBYC's web site. I would like to thank Joe Vetrano for providing CAROLINE as the R/C boat and being the line judge; Judy Nolde and Robin Whyte for doing an excellent job as always on signal flags; Steve Whyte and Judy's friend Gil for handling checkins; Graham Dawson for providing GLIN DE MAR as the beach cat safety boat; Tom Nelson, Jamie and Maura O'Conner for serving as crew on the beach cat safety boat; David Nolde, Gil, Rob Skaar, Dale Pelka, and Chuck Braffett for serving on the finish line; Judy Nolde for bartending; Cindi Mathieu and Dorothy Adriansen for providing food for the beach cat trophy presentation on Saturday; and Lisa Hopper and Dorothy for the Sunday trophy brunch. The first place boats for the four classes in the Island Series (composed of the Hardway, Milt Ingram Trophy, and Tri-Point Ocean races) were TAXI DANCER, JADED, R'ESCAPE, and AFTERBURNER. MISCELLANEOUS Next month we co-host both the Caregiver's Charity Sail-a-thon and the start of the Two Harbor Fall Series with the Anacapa Yacht Club. We hope that many of you will support these two events. 13 Mike s Harem Mr. Hopper is on to something I think. How to revitalize the sport of sailing! How does he do it? I think his Dragon is Majic. You may notice he is almost smiling in one of the pictures. His ladies certainly are.
14 Maggie s version : Another first place finish in the 3 race Neil Underwood Memorial regatta on Aug 9. Maggie on foredeck, Dawn at the helm in training and Mike as trimmer and tactician. A high school student joined us for her first race ever. Fortunately for her but to our dismay it was Very light wind and some early fog which cleared mid-day. The most wind we saw was during the fun downwind run back to the dock in Channel Islands, hitting 6 and 7 knots! A great time was had by all. [looks like it to me, ed]

Check out the Wine and Roses event in Santa Barbara: Bob reports: Last weekend (8/16 & 17) Paul Martson and Bob Shirley of Pierpont Bay Yacht Club and Pierpont Performance Sailing took their little Weta trimarans to Santa Barbara to compete in the Wine & Roses regatta. This was also the Weta West Coast Championship regatta. Eight Wetas attended coming from San Diego, Pomona, Fresno, Orange County and San Francisco in addition to the two Ventura boats. It was a very typical Santa Barbara weekend with sunny skies, busy harbor and beaches and light winds building into the midteens by 3:00 p.m. Both days the race committee postponed the first race until after 1 p.m. waiting for the breeze to build. It was a smart choice because three of the six races had good strong breezes making for great racing. Paul won the first race and went on to finish fourth in the regatta. Bob won the last race and ended up second in the regatta. Of the six races, five different skippers won. The close competition made for exciting racing. It was a well run regatta with close to 50 boats attending. Full results: Thanks, Bob Shirley Weta #147, Empress Ventura CA.
20 Su s Tidbits Reflections on the 2014 Island Series: A lot of work but worth it. Great volunteers. Nice comments from racers. Need someone to take over trophies and T-shirts before I get sued for copyright infringement. The beach cats want to do Milt's Race AND Tri-point next year. Six boats from Santa Barbara is a coup for little ole PBYC. Moments of triumph, but also scary and disappointing moments. Did we lose TEAM CHUMS? No, he was just that far out in front of the other beach cats. Did we lose CHEYENNE? No, but when a boat finishes more than four hours later than the previous boat, and doesn't respond to VHF or phone calls, it can give race committees heart attacks. Two protests can't remember the last time anyone protested an Island Series race. Maybe that shows how important the racers think these races are. We really appreciate Jamie and Maura volunteering HEART OF GOLD for beach cat safety boat duty. Jamie spent much time and money getting her ready only to end up limping back to the slip when overheating buzzers went off. Thanks to Yankee and Kiwi ingenuity, our intrepid cat herders hopped on Graham Dawson's GLIN DE MAR and headed their charges off at the pass. Git along little kitties. Phew! Tom Nelson helped as well. We haven't seen Tom or Lynne for a very long time, so it was good to catch up. Verne Haller offered new member Mark Mandel a crew position on Я ESCAPE for Tripoint. Crew always seems to be a critical issue for racers. Some have had to drop out because crew doesn't show up on the day of a race. Mark not only showed up, but he brought a replacement because he wasn't able to race. Wow! ramp at low tide. Think trucks use low gear. So now I'm considering a wheelchair of all horrible things. We borrowed one and tried it on the marina ramp at low tide and the new walkway. It works. No more dock cart deliveries for me. By the way, check out the app Clinometer. It's free for Android. That's what we used to measure the grade on our walkway. CAREGIVERS SAILATHON is coming on October 12th. Help PBYC keep the Ugly Fish. Whatever watercraft you have, be sure you are on the water to support this organization that provides free assistance to the elderly to help them stay in their homes. This event is for everyone. Tell your dock mates. No yacht club membership required. I advise people who wish to sponsor our boat to donate a fixed amount rather than donating by lap. If it is a slow day, those who give by lap could end up giving less than they planned. If it is a fast day, donors could end up giving more than they planned. Reflections on aging: Don't! Nothing gets easier. I am now 70, but I must have stepped in some kryptonite because I feel that I am losing some of my super powers. We live on the lake in Westlake Village and have an electric boat. Hiking from the dock to the patio over grass and tree roots with the walker was getting too hard. So we put in a brick walkway to smooth the way. Yipes! The grade turned out to be 19.4%. Think marina
21 Notes from the Editor Another month is gone by and with it summer. I was working on Afterburner Saturday, and the harbor was pretty empty. A couple of paddle boats. At least it was a good summer. We actually did well in the Tri-Point race. Good steady wind helps, especially when it doesn t build after we finish. We set a new course record, breaking one that had stood for 12 years. Yes, the old one was ours. And we only beat it by 16 seconds. But HEY! We ll take it. I missed the awards ceremony. When asked why by Su, I had an excuse ready. I was on a plane to Korea that Sunday morning. For a 1 day business meeting. 25 hours of flying, 3 days of time, for a 5 hour meeting. Sheesh! But it made my boss happy, so of course I did not complain, being a team player and all. I discovered I like kimchi. The guy who picked me up was driving me to a dinner. He looked at me and said you like dog food? (His english was not very good). I was baffled. Surely he didn t mean do I like Kibbles and Bits. And other languages sometimes reverse word order. So I asked him do you mean, do I eat dog? He smiled and said yes, you like eat dog? I know they do eat dog in Korea, but still this seemed too insensitive a question. I asked dog? bow wow? dog? His turn to look puzzlled, then he said no, dog, quack, quack. I couldn t stop laughing as I replied no, not dog, duck. Yes, I eat duck. Of course he is laughing as he practices pronouncing duck oh, duck, not dog. Lucky he didn t swerve off the road. On a less happy note, I find myself the owner of 3 boats which is just 2 too many. Two of them are for sale. First is Yolo, my 24 inboard diesel Nautica catamaran RIB, with a landing craft style launch ramp, perfect for diving or beach landings. Second is Afterburner, though it will be hard to find a suitable owner. Still, I m in no rush. The reason for this situation is I did buy the boat in South Africa. I plan to ship her to Tortola, and bring her home next year in a series of comfortable legs, flying back for work & family monthly. It ll either be a great adventure, or I m crazy. Maybe both. Your Editor, [ed] Bill Gibbs
22 Maggie - PBYC s own Taxi dancer Volunteering Pays Off! Tuesday August 26 I told Cindi I would bartend for the meeting of the committee to set the 2015 racing schedule. So one of my customers at the bar was Bob Young, Rear Commodore at SBYC. I asked him what boat he races on and when he said Taxi Dancer I asked him "how do I get a ride on that boat?" He gave me his contact info and the next day I jumped on for Wet Wednesday in Santa Barbara - we won and I was gifted the SBYC trophy glass.
