2 Ten Absolutes of Alzheimer s Caregiving By Ava M. Stinnett Whether it happens gradually or overnight, there s a distinct possibility that one day you will become a caregiver for a loved one. It may be for a parent, a spouse, or even one of your children. According to the National Alliance for Caregiving, there are more than 65 million unpaid caregivers of adults aged 65 or older in the United States. Often, there s very little preparation for the daily challenges that caregivers face, particularly if your loved one has Alzheimer s disease or another form of dementia. There are numerous city and state education programs and services to address the needs of those who provide long-term care for loved ones at home. You ll also find many excellent books that address the topic of caregiving. The Alzheimer s Association, the Family Caregiver Alliance, A Place for Mom, and Eldercare Locator are just a few of many online organizations that provide information and links to support groups. Talking with medical professionals about changes in diet, exercise, medication, and ways to stay mentally active can also be of benefit. There are practical questions, such as how to manage doctor s appointments, insurance paperwork, and how to take time off of work. In this age of information overload, of having too much information leading to what psychologist David Lewis refers to as information fatigue syndrome, here s a list of 10 absolutes in dementia care. These helpful suggestions written by Jo Huey, an Alzheimer s caregiver for over 30 years, are culled from both clinical and practical research and provide a straightforward way of managing care. 1. Never argue, instead agree. 2. Never reason, instead divert. 3. Never shame, instead distract. 4. Never say you can t, instead say, do what you can. 5. Never command or demand, instead ask or model. 6. Never condescend, instead encourage and praise. 7. Never say remember, instead reminisce. 8. Never say I told you, instead repeat. 9. Never lecture, instead reassure. 10. Never force, instead reinforce. If you provide care to someone who has dementia, you may already know of the emotional, mental, and physical challenges that lie ahead. Remembering these absolutes can be more difficult in practice than in theory. However, remaining understanding, patient, and attuned to your loved one s condition are key to providing the best care possible. As Maya Angelou said, They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel. Sources Huey, J. (2008). Alzheimer s disease: Help and hope (2 nd ed.). Alzheimer s Institute. 4 Molly Leavitt Was born in the beautiful bay town of Alameda, Ca on August 8, Molly has one sister and two brothers. As a young girl, Molly enjoyed living in the Bay Area near San Francisco and Oakland, and vividly remembers the downtown area growing. Molly eventually graduated from Alameda High School in 1936, and went straight to work soon after. Molly eventually found a calling by working at Safeway in the meat department as a meat wrapper. While all this was happening, Molly eventually married the man of her dreams, Dan, on September 22, Outside of working, Molly really enjoys traveling, as well as reading and taking scenic walks. Mark Pinon was born January 1994 in the beautiful area of Santa Ana in sunny Southern California to parents Laticia and Ernesto. As a young boy, Mark enjoyed the outdoors kind of life; unless shows like Pokemon were on, Mark was often times found outside enjoying the fresh Santa Ana breeze. While in high school, Mark really exceeded in his academic studies, and participated in a variety of clubs and sports including water polo and swimming. Although Mark was accepted to many different Universities, Mark decided on the University of California Davis and received his degree in Spanish. Since then, Mark has been working at Carlton Senior Living to gain the much needed experience to go into graduate school where he plans to follow his passion of healthcare.

11 What is the Quarterly Creation Contest? Our Memory Care residents spend three months creating a unique interpretation of a famous piece of art. Each community then submits their creation and one is honored for its creativity and uniqueness. This quarter the chosen painting was Snowballing by Cornelius Kimmel. The residents thought this photo took place in the North Pole. They decided to create their own North Pole complete with a village and life size snowman. Congratulations Sacramento on showing your residents a beautiful quarter filled with Winter Fun!
