I can hardly wat for the frst events, the CXB Low Rent 5K and Annual Summer Pcnc. Make sure to mark your calendar for Saturday, May 30 th. Please be on the lookout for a very mportant nformatonal door hanger. The door hanger wll gve very vtal nformaton on the race and the scheduled freworks on July 4 th n the Chesapeake Bay. We are also excted for our CXB Low Rent Paddle Board Classc located n front of and n the parkng lot of Buoy 44. Owner Stefan Mchaels has thrown n hs support of our event and we are so apprecatve. The conc Chesapeake Bay Brdge Tunnel wll be the backdrop of our race and events. It wll also nclude a Fun Paddle for those who are begnners or just want the experence of partcpatng. You may notce the term Low Rent n our event names. The name Low Rent has been synonymous wth a Chc s Beach salboat regatta that spanned 20 years from 1978 to We garnered the permsson to use the name from long term Chc s Beach natve Beetle Baley who s one of the orgnal founders of the Low Rent Regatta. A"er the Vrgnan Plot reported that the new name for the brdge over Lynnhaven Inlet would be "Lesner," an ndependent sta>s>can's report denounced mstakes that were made n coun>ng the votes for the namng of the new brdge. The report found that Admral Jeremah Denton was the "clear wnner," wth 7889 votes and Lesner came n second wth 4506 votes, but because there was a man- made decson to elmnate votes that were made for the same person wthn 15 seconds of each other, more than 80% of the votes for Denton were elmnated and about 5% of Lesner's were. The way the survey was desgned was based towards people keepng the name the same. People needed to only clck Keep the brdge name the same and they were done wth the survey. Vrgna Department of Envronmental Qualty (DEQ) reports that the results collected by the CBCL volunteers at each of the four CBCL lakes over the past fve years show some very hgh ph (above 9.0) and occasonally hgh temperatures (above 32 C). The ssue appears to be due to hgh levels of algae present n the water due to accumulated nutrents such as phosphorus. Ths makes the water very stressful for many types of game fsh such as bass to survve n. DEQ recommends tes>ng later ths summer durng a full (algae) bloom and durng the fall turnover to get a good dea of how much phosphorus s present n the water. Ntrogen s not as major a concern for nutrents as ntrogen can escape the water column through dentrfyng bactera. Because of ths, phosphorus s most o"en the lmted nutrent for many waterbodes ncludng lakes. There are several op>ons that can help and DEQ encourages the cvc leagues to consult wth a lake management professonal about aera>on or chemcal methods, whch can be very expensve. Agan DEQ ponts out that lm>ng the pollutants that enter the lakes means less need to correct the lakes, and stresses the need for educa>on. DEQ says the cvc leagues are n the best pos>on to educate the neghborhoods. It s cr>cal that neghborhoods adopt a smart fer>lzer program. Note: CBCL plans to mplement tests for turbdty (Secch Dsks) n May, and CBCL s workng out procedures wth HRSD to begn tes>ng for total phosphate (TP) at the same >me. 10 ANNUAL SUMMER PICNIC MAY 30TH NOON - 3PM IN PARK BEHIND HK ON THE BAY 2015 has gotten off to a chlly start but come May 30th CXB frends, famles, runners and walkers shall embrace the comng summer season wth a lttle jog we lke to call the CXB Low Rent 5K begnnng and endng n front of HK on the Bay (4600 Lookout Rd). Our race wll be tmed by our Shore Drve frends at J&A Racng wth premum event shrts and fnshers medals and wll feature both a runnng and a walkng dvson. Followed by a lttle post-race party sponsored by our local favorte O'Connor Brewng Company for the runners, staff & volunteers. DJ Bobby wll be donatng hs craft to MC and DJ the 5K race. Volunteers are stll needed for water statons, course marshals, course cleanup and much more. A Race Volunteer Apprecaton Party wll be held at Chc's Beach Grll (2472 Pleasure House Rd) on May 28th, 2015 at 6 pm.
