Their escort boat ran aground on Kaneohe reef while on their way to the race start at Kailua. Numerous phone calls ensued and Dave Dunham from Lanikai CC was the first to volunteer his boat as an escort (thanks Dave). At the same time Andrew Glatzel quickly got a boat into the water at Hawaii Kai and pushed full throttle to the start line. The girls in the starting lineup of the 40's were in the canoe for a little longer than first planned, but it was all good training for the E Lau Hoe and Na Wahine O Ke Kai. Thanks Andrew; the girls were very happy to see you come to their rescue! In fact it actually turned out to be a good day for Outrigger women. The open program is in a re-building phase this year and the comradery right now could not be better. Our numbers have grown steadily and with the influx of the paddlers from the novice program (including the mighty novice B State Champion crew) we now have a lot of paddlers genuinely competing for seats and everyone is improving through the healthy competition. Consequently the program is going from strength to strength and the atmosphere is great. On race day we entered two open women's crews, a 40's crew and a 50's crew. The 50's battled with a strong Kailua crew all the way but OCC emerged victorious claiming the gold medal in their division and 10th canoe over the finish line in After the initial drama the 40's crew recovered well and placed 4th in their division and 33rd overall in a time of Outrigger White (open) actually crossed the line in 20th position (15th in their division) in a time of but was penalized five minutes for "jumping the start". Still a great hit out for these girls and a good learning experience for many of the newer paddlers. Outrigger Red (open) had a great race and finished in 5th place overall (4th in their division) in This crew contained a blend of youth, experience and real novice paddlers in their first changes race. They were only 1.29 behind the crew who placed 3rd overall in the Na Wahine O Ke Kai last year, so this result speaks for itself. A total of 41 crews entered the Dad Center this year. However, this was the first year that no koa canoes were entered. We intended to race the Leilani BUT the tide was VERY low at the start and there were coral heads everywhere so we erred on the side of caution and went with a fiberglass canoe. Still lots of work to be done before the E Lau Hoe and Na Wahine o Ke Kai but all our crews are working well and with the prevailing attitude and approach anything is possible. A big MAHALO to Liz Perry, Tom McTigue and Mark Cluney for escorting the 40's, 50's and OCC White crew! Congratulations to the Waikiki Beach Girls who won the Dad Center race in 3:10:46.58 with Hui Nalu finishing second in 3:12:23.79 and Team Bradley in third in 3:18: Dad Center Pareau s Members interested in obtaining a pareau that was given to each of the paddlers in the Dad Center Race may contact Paula Crabb. RIGHT: Dona Loustalot, Mahi Riley, Mary E Ciacci, Watters Martin, Gerri Pedesky, Paddy Dunn, Nora Gentry, Christy Hassell. AND it was truly just that, kanikapila in full force. The Koa Lanai was transformed to the old days of the Outrigger Canoe Club. Each table was decorated beautifully with greens and flowers from Dale Hope s home in Palolo, by the green team of Joy Barnhart, Gerri Pedesky and Baby Dave Rochlen. The evening began with music by Live Aloha, Brant Chillingworth, Max Solmssen and Jake Vaughan. The traditional toast and pule (a moment of silence for those "old timers" who have left us) was done by Ivanelle Choy. Throughout the evening, one could hear the echoes from those who brought their ukulele, as they played along. Several guests got up and jammed with the boys and several hula dancers danced to their favorite songs. Island songs were played; Hilo March, with those Hiloians standing proud to their song. Guest Rodney Cazimero felt at home and took the audience with him to the days of old. Mementos were given to the oldest and youngest attendee. Gertrude Berger, who was one of the original "old timers", won, well, you can guess which category she won. The youngest attendee award went to Hiro Soma. Mahi Jack Cheshire was not able to attend the event from the mainland, but kindly gave an OCC towel to the person closest to his birthday. The evening was filled with smiles and hugs, as we all lived aloha. Save the date August 31, 2015 for the next Kama`aina Kanikapila. Page 4 October 2014

7 Photo Contest Deadline October 31 By Mary Caywood The Outrigger Canoe Club's popular Photo Contest, sponsored by our Public Relations Committee, is open October Club members, their immediate family members and OCC staff may enter. The entry form and rules are available at the Front Desk and on OCC's Website. Competition is keen in the annual contest; however, your chances of winning are good--there are six categories and you may enter up to two photos in each category. In each category you may have a story to tell, a feeling to express, or action or view of beauty to share. The contest entry form has a space to write in what inspired you to take the photo and what feelings the photo gives. In a new category, "Black & White," the lack of color may add a vintage feel and elegance to the photo. The Grand Prize winning photo will be featured on the cover of the January Outrigger magazine. First prize photos in each of the six categories will be published in that issue. Second and third prize photos will be published in that or another early 2015 issue. The Grand Prize winner will receive an OCC gift card for $200 that may be spent anywhere in the Club, and first prize winners will each receive $50 gift cards. Except for the Anything Goes category, all photos must be taken in or around the Club or at an event in which Club members participate. The "Anything Goes" category includes any subject appropriate for Outrigger magazine use at any location--in Hawaii or elsewhere. If recognizable people are in a photo it must include a Club member and member(s) must be identified. Sports events and family activities need to be named and/or described with location given. You may enter up to TWO photos in each of the following categories. A completed entry form must be attached to each photo. CLUBSCAPE: Club interior or exterior--the place, the people and activities. OCEAN: Photo taken in or on the ocean near the Club. SPORTS & ACTIVITIES: Club members participating in sports and activities. May include family activities if well identified. 8 By Ron Haworth, Graphic by Bart Potter Outrigger Koa Log is an endeavor to sift for snippets in the sand of our century glass, so that we might rediscover the misplaced and forgotten as well as pumice our modern image and achievements. Kimo Wilder McVay luckily didn't require a drum roll to announce his entry into the Outrigger Canoe Club. The bagpipe crescendo of rainbow colors, which made up his wardrobe, would have surely muted any such fanfare. Eyes glazed in awe and astonishment, even envy, on beholding Kimo's attire of the day which might have been lime green shoes and bright yellow socks beneath royal blue pants all topped with a silky flamboyant Aloha shirt. When he was dressed to the nines he wore an Aloha Jacket of his design. Kimo was a riot of color with a personality just as flamboyant. He was neon in motion with a never waning searchlight smile. But hidden beneath his colorful wardrobe was a very generous man as well as talented promoter. And what he did to enrich the final years of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku's life has generally been dimmed by the on/off switch of time, unheralded, an unselfish deed never headlined for public consumption. Kimo McVay bestowed his love upon Duke in a quiet and personal way. Freddie Hemmings, because of his close relationship with Kimo and Duke as a member of the Duke Surfing Team, is highly qualified to shine a light on Kimo's kindness for Duke in those final years. He recently reminisced, "I was fortunate to have been closely associated with the Duke contest from 1964 to 1966 when I was executive assistant. I worked closely with Kimo, helping format the event even to selecting the invited surfers to the first contest in So I knew the extent of their friendship and Kimo's generosity with Duke. Duke loved to watch the greatest surfers of that time compete in a contest bearing his name. Had he been able he would have paddled out and joined them." Instead, Duke wistfully watched those surfers spin rooster tails at Sunset Beach and across his crystal memory. What fantasies did he entertain? Which memories did he cherish? History might time date this endearing Kimo/Duke relationship to the day they went to Honey's in Kanehoe to listen to a local and unknown barefoot guy playing the piano and maybe singing "one paddle, two paddle, three paddle, four to take me home." Kimo knew talent when he heard it and it wasn't long till Don Ho and The Aliis were a runaway hit at Duke's in Waikiki's International Market Place. The name Duke Kahanamoku, always golden in memory, was again Tiny Bubbles effervescent in the public's eyes. "I don't know all the details but I believe in exchange for the use of Duke's name, Kimo saw to it Duke wanted for nothing in the last few years of his life. He bought a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud for Duke's 77th birthday and furnished a driver and always flew him first class when they visited the Mainland." Poki`i Vaughan was Duke s driver and fondly remembers driving Duke from 1966 till his death, first in a white Rolls-Royce limousine with DK lettering Kimo Wilder McVay on the doors and then the birthday Silver Cloud. "Duke always treated me like a grandson and I was honored to drive his widow Nadine and Arthur Godfrey to Duke's beach boy aloha." "Kimo was not one of those who'd slap Duke on the back and say 'Aloha to you, blah, blah, blah, in passing, reflexes not truly felt. Kimo took Duke to his heart and was guardian of his welfare and legacy while making sure he lived his final days as the Alii he unquestionable was," Freddie said. Forty-six years ago Kimo shared a story with me: "While in Las Vegas at the one night Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass concert, there were more show biz celebrities in attendance than casino slot machines have cherries, but the only person in the audience Herb Alpert acknowledged was Duke. Aka Hemmings and Brant Ackerman who were traveling with us after a safari to the Huntington Beach Surfing Contest were in awe. I'm sure their lives were enriched having experienced and been a part of Duke's magnetism." Duke was never anything but Duke the waterman; he broke bread with royalty and celebrities but never lost contact with his beach boy heritage. In his own country he had been refused service in Mainland restaurants while foreign kings felt humble in his presence. But he was always a gentleman champion in any language...of any color. Smiling, Fred reminisced: "At mainland banquets Duke could "moe moe" and be dreaming of big Castles behind his sunglasses before the speaker on the podium got past saying and distinguished guests. He wasn't one impressed with Hollywood names or places. And when he was with surfers he was just Duke and not Duke Kahanamoku." Kimo once told me a story which typified Duke's nonchalant shoulder rubbing with society's elite. "I was trying to change a light bulb in a dark hallway in Duke's. The darn thing just wouldn't thread and I was getting fit to be tied when Duke ambles by and commented he knew Tommy." "Tommy! Who the blazes is Tommy?" I asked exasperated. "Tom Edison," he replied. Kimo McVay took an aging Duke under his wing, an Olympian in deed and a man who had in his youth spread modern day surfing around the world. He gave the 'boy' in spirit, now adorned with a crown of silver, a winning finish line so well deserved. Page 8 October 2014

9 A Newbie Does Dad Center By Tina Larson When I woke up August 24, the morning of my first long distance race ever, I was full of anxiety and questions: What do I eat? What extra clothing should I bring? What parts of my body do I lube up? Should I drink coffee? What if, mid-race, I have to go #2, what do I do? I was apprehensive and wondered what I was about to get myself into. That apprehensiveness turned into sheer excitement when I got to the OCC and got in the van with my fellow teammates. The chatter along the way to Kailua was comforting to this newbie. When we arrived at Kailua Beach Park, I just followed orders and did what I was told. As we lined up our canoe before the start, it became pretty clear that SOMETHING unusual was going on. And that s when we were told we didn t have a support boat; ours hit a reef and wasn t going to make it. We all trust the coaches so much and when they said not to worry, we all had the mindset that we would have iron manned that race if that s what it came down to! Liz Perry was in charge of the 40 s boat. As a Novice B paddler in regatta season, I was used to Liz s pre-race coaching talks that quite frankly, scared the crap out of me; which really was quite effective in a two-minute sprint. But on race day, Liz s demeanor seemed different. Her talk was about relationships, and how important they are. The relationship is not just with the boat, but also with our teammates. Her advice was to leave each relationship better than you found it. It was profoundly heartfelt. I found myself with chicken skin and teary eyes. It also was inspiring food for thought during the entire race and even still today. Andrew Glatzel truly saved the day by offering his support boat. Andrew s knowledge of the ocean was truly awe inspiring, especially when he instructed us to shoot the gap between the rocks, while our competitors all went around. Watching my team paddle alongside Makapu`u wall was breathtaking. As Andrew instructed, our expert steerswoman let the boat dance and she did it so gracefully. I couldn t have asked for a better boat of women. I learned something from every single teammate. The positivity, encouragement, and support were truly amazing. The last portion of the race summed up our spirit. I learned so much during my first race. I learned that paddle choice is important. I learned that changes are not really all that bad when you have confidence. I also learned that when told to look for Alan Davis, I should be looking for a beach, not a man in another boat. (I seriously wondered who he was and why we were all looking for him.) But most importantly, I learned what an amazing group of people comprise the Outrigger Canoe Club paddling team. Thank you to everyone for being so supportive and making this a great first experience. A special thanks to Liz Perry and Michele St. John. Having you two in the boat really made this an epic adventure. I look forward to many more adventures to come! Outrigger Page 9

10 OCC Surf Night & John McMahon Surf Awards By Joe Kindrich, Photos by Harry Newhart Junior Surfers of the Year: Mahina Akaka and Ke`ea Lum Good fun, good times, and good people was what was happening at this year's OCC Surf Night and John McMahon Surf Awards. This annual event was a great success as measured from all the smiles and high energy. The OCC Surf Committee secured five new surfboards from the Surf Factory and Chronic that were raffled off with raffle tickets starting at $5. No typo, $5 per raffle ticket. Congratulations to all the surfboard winners! It's great that they all went to good homes. A special thank you goes to Jimmy McMahon, Manhattan Beachwear and Scott Hawaii for the abundance of great door-prizes. We gave out so many prizes that not a single young person left empty handed. Every year the OCC Surf Committee recognizes a Surfer of the Year with the John McMahon Surf Award. This year we recognized a female and male surfer. Our female winner was Mahina Akaka and male, Ke`ea Lum. Both Mahina and Ke`ea are so deserving of this award due to their great surfing accomplishments at such a young age. You can for sure expect to see these names in the future on a grand scale. This perpetual trophy is located at the OCC Lobby Trophy Case and dates back to 1976 with some very notable names on it. Congratulations to Mahina and Ke`ea, you deserve it and best of luck to your surfing future. A special thank you also goes to OCC Surf Committee members Jim Farrell and Kaili Chun for all their hard work, dedication and wisdom in making this event such a great success. Please remember this event for next year as the OCC Surf Night is open to any member who would like to join us for some great food, surf fellowship and awesome surf raffle prizes. Celebrating Ke`ea s win were father Mike Lum, uncle Scott Matsuoka, grandmother Rosie Lum, aunt Michelle Matsuoka, and Ke`ea. Mahina s family and friends surround her after the win. Surfboard winners: Kailoa Akaka, Noa Haine, David Rochlen. Page 10 October 2014

12 Boys Sand Volleyball Teams Place 3rd and 5th Coach Alika Williams, Kanai Akana, Jake Chouljian, Wil Stanley, Todd Gruebner, Noa Kerner, Alex Wallen. For the first time ever, on July the Club helped send three junior boy s sand volleyball teams to the AAU Junior National Tournament in Hermosa Beach, California. The teams were Kanai Akana/Jake Chouljian in the 14 and under division and Todd Grubner/Wil Stanley and Noa Kerner/Alex Wallen in the 16 and under division. The boys were coached by Alika Williams and made a great showing at a very strong tournament as the competition in Southern California is always fierce. Kanai and Jake placed third, bringing home bronze medals, Todd and Wil placed fifth, and Noa and Alex battled in pool play on Saturday but did not advance to Sunday. All in all it was a great experience for the boys to compete on the world famous "strand" right at the pier in Hermosa, the hotbed for sand volleyball. To go up and play in the difficult conditions (deep sand and steady wind) and against some of the best teams in the country was special. The boys hope to do it again next year! Mahalo to the Volleyball Committee co-chairs Rick Humphreys and Alan Lau, Sue Chouljian and Kat Wallen (team moms), and OCC members Hermosa Beach residents Pat Ayau, Lee LeGrande, and Ed McCall who helped with logistics. 13 Girls Sand VB Coach Lia Young Hunt, Hina Pua`a, Mapu Sekona, Hoakalei Dawson, and Anna Uhr. By Lia Young Hunt The inaugural OCC beach volleyball girls team included two 16s and one 18s team. The 16s comprised of partners Hina Pua`a and Mapuhola Sekona, Kaitlin Allen and Emi Pua`a (did not play due to injury). The 18s team included Anna Uhr and Hoakalei Dawson. The experience of our team varied, nonetheless the growth and learning curves were exemplary. We arrived in Hermosa a day early to get situated. For some, the sensation of the deep Hermosa sand and her infamous cross-wind was a first. The girls went right into pool play with both 16s and 18s playing at the same time. The 18s were consistent but the cross-wind environment stole a few points here and there allowing experienced local opponents to gobble up the freebies. The team of Uhr and Dawson managed to pull out two wins after eight matches with impressive and feisty play against strong SoCal teams that riddle the Hermosa AAU. Our 16s team of Pua`a and Sekona managed to make the tournament after an ankle sprain scare the week prior at JOs. Of all members, they had the least experience as a team but showed the most improvement during the season and also at the tournament. Backward Glances By Barbara Del Piano 50 Years Ago 1964 J. Ward Russell, President Fifty years ago, the move of the Club to its new Diamond Head site was well established. In 1982 John Cline Mann discussed in an oral history conducted by Alex H. F. Castro some elements about how the new Club would look to members. A member of the planning committee, he said the new Club should look like it had been there for many years. He talked about the coconut trees. We decided that the coconuts that would be brought in, and eventually we were to plant 80 of them, would have to be at least 25 years old. These we got very cheaply because normally people try to get rid of coconuts. The major cost in planting tall coconuts is, of course, the labor and machinery costs, namely the flat bed trailers and the crane; the labor costs also. We were able to install all of our coconuts at $100 apiece. In our 21st century moving mature coconuts today would require enormous costs. Page 14 October 2014

The sale will give the Club the ability to invest the proceeds within the Building Fund and better plan of for our future. The purchase price was $13.5 million. Outrigger Page 15
