2 April is long gone, and with that PMYC s land cruise to Palm Springs, the crock pot contest, lots of great Friday night dinners and the Cinco de Mayo celebration at home. A new up sign up sheet for Friday night dinners is posted on the galley door. Find a date and cook something special for your fellow members. I d like to thank the race committee and everyone involved with the Chuck Stein 1 race. I heard it was some anchor winch problems but otherwise a great day. Mothers day brunch turned out to be an outstanding day. Over 110 members and guests were served the best brunch in Los Angeles thanks to Staff Commodore Ted / Mary Ellen Woolery and their helpers Bill / Buffy Cavaness, John / Linda Black, Irv Osser, Mary Wichser and Nick Cecola. Thanks to Howard Wikoff for helping me in the bar. Don t forget to mark your calendar for events in May and June. May 22 nd, Fundraiser for the junior program May 31 st, Memorial Day BBQ on the back deck. June 5 th, Swap Meet 8-3 June 12 th, Casino Night. PMYC s birthday party. The news from Mike and Candy is, that as of around 1400 on 5/11, we became Grand Parents. Candy s daughter Lorna, her husband Justen, and the new member Campbell Quin. Everyone s great, we re heading out to the DC area Thursday to visit. Two requests: Let us know your latest address, phone # and address, and if you want hard copies of the Log. 3 Fleet Captain s Report - Larry Koch The first day event for the Chuck Stein Race series went off as planned. Race chairs Eric Hermannson and Tony Milazzo spent a lot of time and effort to mail out notices of the race to over 200 potential racers. The club owes them both a giant thank you for all their work and effort. A good response came back and the race was on. Pamela Johnson furnished the race committee boat and ten people ventured out to run the race. Eric is now an official P.R.O. which means PMYC is officially back in the racing business after years of absenteeism. He put in a lot of personal time and effort to take the class, pass the test and study all the rules. Again, a big thanks on behalf of the club to him. The racers all returned to the Club for a barbeque and live music after the race and a good time was had by all. All the Officers and Directors of the Club thank Tony and Eric for all their hard work. If you see either of them at the Club, stop and thank them yourselves. They have both surely earned it. Two cruiseouts down and five to go... The Palm Springs cruise was a lot of fun. All of you who stayed home, missed a great opportunity to enjoy all that the Desert has to offer. Those of us who did take the short two hour drive out there, met up for a wonderful dinner at the home of Richard Toohey which happens to be on a golf course in La Quinta. The Jim Dalby and Susan can tell you about the beautiful desert flowers they saw in Joshua Tree. Fred and Ellen spent quality time with friends they had not seen in a long time. Darlene and I worked on our tans and did a little shopping. Now, let's recap the Cinco de Mayo Cruise, (uno de Mayo) to some of us. There were a lot of boats signed up and that's a good sign. The bandstand at the Isthmus was all reserved and a fun time was planned for all. Unfortunately, as we got closer to departure, good old Mother Nature decided she really didn't want us to go to the Island. The winds on Thursday and Friday were predicted to blow at upwards of 35 knots. The seas were expected to be large and the temperatures cold. We had a few new members who have never been to the Island and I felt they were unprepared to weather the conditions. Even those of us who have boats capable of venturing out into those conditions, it just didn't make a lot of sense. People can get hurt, boats can break, and nobody has a good time when any of those things happen. Soooooooo, I figured we had better have a party at the club. Friday night we had a pot luck with everyone bringing a dish to share and there was plenty of food. Pamela Johnson located a mariachi band for entertainment and dancing and a great time was had by all who attended. Thanks to Mike Donovan for his pictures of the mariachi band and dancers. And no visits from the sheriff over the noise. On Saturday afternoon, we watched the Kentucky derby in high def and Alex Cordova won the pool. The festivities started around 4:00 with the guacamole contest (Mary Ellen Woolery) won; then we had the margarita contest (won by Fred Whitman) which I question how much help he had with the recipe, since he only drinks Bud Light. Next, we had the tortilla tossing contest from the rail on the big deck. The target was Tony Milazzos' dinghy tied up on the long dock. The winning toss was by Candy Brown even if it was deflected off of Mikes head. Gonzo cooked a ton of carne asada and we all ate till every bit of food was gone. Fight fans watched the pay per view fight on the big screen TV between Mosley and Merriweather. The highlight of the day was the pinata smashing contest won by new member Scotty McCullough, but the clear winner for entertainment value was Irv Osser. See him for details. The entire weekend was full of fun and activities with many many people participating. Thank you to everyone who helped to get it all organized and to those of you who participated. PMYC was hopping. We are the still the BEST YACHT CLUB around!! Hope to see you all at Avalon for Father's Day weekend. Next order of business is the remaining cruising schedule: June Father's Day cruise to Avalon - Miniature golf tournament, new zip line ride, shopping, eating, drinking (all those fun things Dad loves). Thank Bob Butte now for the moorings. July 4 Dinghy raft-up -Someone new needs to make the jello shooters. July Luau Cruise to Isthmus (still working on Cat harbor possibilities) - See Cal Troupe in his coconut bra and hula skirt! Aug Shoreline Yacht Club - Land and/or water cruise out - tons of stuff to do in Long Beach like we once upon a time did in San Diego...sorry, no zoo. Sep Hors d' oeuvres cruise to Emerald Bay - get out your moms favorite recipe and beat all your friends, and win a cheesy trophy and bragging rights. So, come one come all, join in the fun and participate. Sign up early and often. It's a proven fact that the more you participate, the more fun you will have and remember, your boat won't break sitting in the slip. And we all love fixing and working on our boats. So let's use them!!!! Don't forget about the racing schedule for the summer. We need participants and we need race day committee boats for all the flag waving, gun shooting, and cocktail drinking. 7 Alan and Melissa, Out and About! Alan and I spent a glorious 5 days (well he was there longer for work) on the Island of Oahu. Alan being almost a native from working in Hawaii for so long he was my tour guide. We first explored thru downtown Waikiki which is hotel row, and Alan s favorite surfing spot. I couldn t believe the different colors of the water so beautiful. The hotel we stayed at was at the edge of Waikiki and over looked the ocean and downtown. So at night we had the doors open to hear the ocean and could sit out on the lanai to see the lights of Waikiki. Sunday we enjoyed services at Alan s favorite local church, then onto Brunch at the Kaneohe Yacht Club with friends. To work that off we took a trek up to Diamond Head where Mother Nature did not disappoint us and made sure if was extremely windy and rainy thereby making it a memorable hike. The trail was a bit rough, but not as much as the 1 st set of 75 stairs to be followed by the 99 steps right after. Needless to say the view was wonderful as we took a quick glance and then retreated inside the tunnel to escape the elements. After refreshing ourselves we headed into downtown for cocktails at the Mai Tai bar, and to take in the night life. Monday we packed our bags and headed to the Turtle Bay Resort in the Northshore. Given the weather we had been experiencing and heading toward the beast we had already planned to hunker down with a good book in our new digs. Much to our surprise the drive up was gorgeous. We stopped off at a nature center where peacocks were posing for pictures. We stopped at Alan s favorite surf shop and lunch at his favorite restaurant. We stopped for pictures at several beaches, Pipeline being one of them. I couldn t believe the gusts coming in from the trade winds you needed weights to keep you planted! After a beautiful drive we arrived at the resort and found Alan s contact had set us up with an ocean front cottage it was fabulous with a capital F! The view from our front porch! The ocean 50 feet away! The resort blocking the wind. We never even took our books out of the suitcases! After receiving our complimentary fruit basket, glass of fresh guava juice and souvenir t-shirts we love this place! - We enjoyed a nice walk around the grounds. The beach was amazing with the lava rocks blocking the ocean from entering the sandy beach. There were people horseback riding and lots of action at the pool and hot tub. As much as we hated to leave Tuesday we headed down to one of Alan s best friends to stay our last night. This was to give me a local feel of Hawaii. We walked to the park and played Frisbee with her dog, took a nice walk around the neighborhood, then off to a nice Himalayan dinner. Wednesday before we left Alan had a fun-filled day packed with things to see before our afternoon flight. We toured around a resort that had a dolphin show, a popular tourist visit of a volcano made beach, along with many other ocean front beach stops. I truly could not believe how beautiful the water colors could be. So many levels of green and blue. We hated to leave and as all trips do it ended before we were ready. But left us wanting more and are looking forward to our next trip! Hope you enjoyed our story! Al & MelJ Aloha!
