KTHS Community TERM 1 Semester 1 - VOL 5 1st March, 2019 EVENTS CALENDAR: TERM 1 - FEBRUARY Thurs 7th: Summer Sports Program SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING: Mon 18th March 7.30pm Guest Speaker On Wednesday students from Year 9 to Year 12 attended a talk by Brent Alford. He spoke about making smart choices, in particular relating to alcohol and drugs, and the impact they had on his life He attended parties as all young adults do and thought he was invincible, until one night when he was intoxicated and attempted to jump off second storey balcony aiming to land in a nightclub. The only thing stopping him from entering the night club was the vending machine, which caused 17 broken bones and an acquired brain injury. He was in a coma for seven weeks, and undertook years of rehabilitation, learning to how to eat, talk and walk again. His rehabilitation is ongoing, as he still does not have full use of his left side and has some speech issues. The presentation was confronting in that he spoke about what he was like before the accident, and then the reality of his present situation was there for everyone to see. Brent did not mince his words and told it like it is. The main messages he passed on to the students is that life is about making smart choices and that we are not indestructible. It is easy to live in the moment without regard for the consequences but it is these consequences that can have a devastating effect. Brent is now well on the way to recovery but it has been long and hard. He sets goals for himself and works to achieve these goals. Despite being told he would never be able to walk again he is now running! This was a direct result of goal setting. There were some very clear messages to take from Brent s presentation. XUNO Parents should now be becoming aware that the school is introducing a new computer management program called Xuno. Xuno is a web-based school management software designed to do everything that schools need and it is currently being rolled out to parents through invitation. As a parent you will be able to see your child s attendance and respond/reply to attendance queries. This approach is almost seamless as once we record the attendance you can access it straight after. Further down the track you will be able to monitor your child s progress as well as keep up to date with future activities. If you have been invited please take the time to look at the program. Term 1 We are now half way through the first term. It has been a busy start for everyone with lots of extra curricular activities including swimming, summer athletics, excursions and guest speakers. At this point in time I would like all students to stop and have a think about how they are travelling Are you up to date with your work? Do you need extra help with certain subjects to improve your understanding? How do you seek extra assistance in the classroom or outside of the classroom? How can staff help? Asking yourself these sorts of questions and acting upon them can make a big difference to improving your learning outcomes. Pg. 1 of 10 Dean Rogers, Principal

4 SWAN HILL DIVISION SWIMMING CARNIVAL On Friday 22nd February, Swan Hill Outdoor Pool hosted the Swan Hill Division Swimming Sports. KTHS was well represented across all age groups in the majority of the events. The students displayed a high level of sportsmanship and good behaviour and are to be commended on their efforts. There were some outstanding performers throughout the day with first, second and third place getters. A mention to those who won their individual & team events: Tyler Meehan (13M) winning his Backstroke event Demby Makeham (17F) winning her Backstroke event Samuel Radcliffe (20M) winning his Freestyle & Backstroke events 20 Female Freestyle Relay Team: Emily & Jasmine Bortolotto and Hannah & Elly Spencer 20 Male Freestyle Relay Team: Liam & Samuel Radcliffe, Thomas Meehan & Joshua Walters Congratulations to THOMAS MEEHAN (17M) & SAMUEL RADCLIFFE (20M) who won their Individual Age Group Champions!
