2 From the Principal s Pen. Nau mai, Haere mai, Piki mai. Week 2, Term 1. The end of Week 2 already. The temperature is climbing and the beach and pool are looking great. The children have started the year with vim and vigour. We initially had to share a room between the juniors and seniors, which worked very well. Thank you to Whaea Chambers for letting us use her space. Now the seniors are back in their new classroom and enjoying the new surroundings. I would like to thank Whaea Hateley for some of the extra hours she has put in; to test children, start new learning programmes and update herself on the latest testing regimes being run by the Ministry. I would also like to thank Joy for putting in a lot of extra hours to ensure that the school was ready for opening day. Both of these people donated unpaid hours to the school and children. Whaea Hateley will be Principal while I am on study leave, completing my Masters of Education through Massey University. Jude brings immense knowledge to the roll of Principal. She has been a Principal for many years prior to her current role at Waimārama. She knows the children and staff extremely well and knowledge of the NZ Curriculum is a particular strength. 3 BOT Elections. BOT elections are to be held in May/June. Joy Angus has been appointed the Returning Officer for Waimārama School. Please keep these dates in mind. Nominations close noon Friday 20 th May, and voting closes noon Friday 3 rd June. Forms and letters will be sent out closer to the time. Waimārama School encourages parents and whanau to get involved with the governance of our school. If you feel you can contribute to the children, staff and community of Waimārama please consider being nominated for a role on the Board. Uniform Waimārama School has issued all the children with our existing stocks of school uniform, at no cost to families. We currently have a generous parent trying to access funding and if you wish to buy a new polo shirt, The Warehouse currently have them available in our colour, Jade. They are $18.99 each and come in sizes 4 to 16. Stitchery Embroidery have our logo and will embroider this on for $6.90. Shorts are also available at The Warehouse for $14.99 in sizes from 5 to 16 our preferred colour is black or navy. Swimming It is great to have our children swimming in our pool again. They are learning valuable skills about the water and water survival. When we venture to the beach we try to practice beach awareness by identifying danger spots and knowing our strengths and weaknesses when near or in water. Open Afternoon / Pool Party Next Friday we are opening the school up to the community by having an Open Afternoon and Pool Party. We are inviting all members of the Waimārama Community and surrounding districts to our wonderful school to observe us in action. Lunch is from 12.30pm till 1.15pm come and join us for lunch. The

4 children will then go back to class and be involved in some learning activities. We are inviting the public into our classes to observe and join in what we are doing. From pm, weather permitting, we will open the pool for a recreational swim for anybody that is keen. School Trips Parents would have received permission forms last week, if you have not already done so, please get them signed and back to school as soon as possible along with the information update forms. Parent helpers are always welcome on all school trips, we usually require assistance with transport and where possible we will issue petrol vouchers towards this. Please note that we do have to ensure our students safety and require a vehicle/ driver form to be filled in. This is to ensure current WOF, registration, number of seatbelts, insurance and full license. We have on hand a few car seats for those children who require them. Thank you in anticipation of your continued assistance this year. 5 ROOM 2 UPGRADE The builders arrive and start renovations. A new space is created (stolen from the resource room) between the two classrooms. Modern Learning Environment. New lining on the walls and new carpet on the floor. The floor is taken up, the walls are cleaned off. The ceiling is lowered and the painting is happening. Room 2 enjoying their new class room. 11 MR TWIT Whaea Hateley read the story Mr Twit to the children. The children then had to cut pictures from magazines and stick them on to Mr Twit s beard. Room 2 are doing a beard study at present.

12 Our pool is finally up and running. The children enjoy an instructional lesson each day and a free swim at lunch time. Above Parehuia and Kiana are back-stroking and Elijah is using the kick board. Below, Room 1 children being starfish and learning to float.

Call Joy in the office for login details. School Swimming Pool Waimārama School is committed to providing a safe environment, as far as is practicable, for the school community. The swimming pool compound must meet all legislative requirements, and the pool rules and common sense observed to minimise the risk of accident or injury at the pool. The school also has obligations under the Finance and Property Management policy around the management and maintenance of the pool. The board complies with the Ministry of Education's Health and Safety Code of Practice. The board of trustees is responsible for ensuring that the guidelines for pool use and an emergency contact number are clearly displayed in the pool area. Outside of school hours, the board of trustees is not responsible for any harm to pool users provided that when the pool and surroundings are made available to the public, the board complies with the provisions of this policy. The School Swimming Pool policy enables us to: maintain and manage the pool provide guidelines and rules for use of the pool. A swimming pool first aid kit is available within the compound during the swimming season and available to all pool users at all times. In addition to a standard first aid kit it may contain resuscitation masks and a foil blanket. A note is clearly displayed requiring any use of the kit to be reported to the school office, so that stocks can be topped up and injuries recorded in the first aid log.

Living a Healthy Life with long-term conditions course Tuesdays 9:30-12 (morning tea provided) at the Marae Whare Ora clinic Starts Feb 16 through to Easter (6 weeks) This course is a SHARED LEARNING based self-management course for people who have any conditions affecting their lives or with loved ones in this situation. The course will help you to share experiences with others and learn or reinforce what you already know about healthy living. The course aims to equip all participants with a self-management toolbox to help with dealing with the effects of chronic conditions. The course is facilitated by locals trained by Health Hawke's Bay (Primary Health Organisation) under licence from Stanford University. For more info call or text Myra or myralynnbarber@gmail.com
