2 FROM THE PRESIDENT A Big welcome to our new junior members for summer competition I d like to extend a very big welcome to all of our new junior tennis members and their families who started competition last weekend. We have five teams in ERT Junior competition comprising four on Saturday and one on Sunday. It has been a big effort from our coaches Troy and Mike to get our new teams up and running. WOW what a day!! - We really had a big Spring into Tennis day Did you come along to our Spring into Tennis day last month? Well, if you didn t you missed the best open/promotional day the club has ever put on. The weather was fantastic at 25 C for most of the day. The grounds and club house looked amazing. Our coaches Troy and Mike did a fantastic job in running the events and providing all the tennis equipment for hot shots. The coaches also did a huge amount of work in getting such a terrific roll up from Goodlife coached people, St Luke s and Wantirna Primary School kids and parents. The committee members were involved with the advertising and having our family and friends come along, plus the grandkids as well. Many thanks to those committee members, life members, and members and wives who helped out on the day and for cooking up such a hugely successful sausage sizzle. We had a surprise visitor to our event, our local Victorian Government MP Nick Wakeling, State Member for Ferntree Gully, Shadow Minister for Education. It was terrific of Nick to take the time out to come along. Nick was really impressed at the turn up and the organisation of our event. Finally, in terms of numbers, we had 99 people attend, we signed up 2 full memberships and 2 social memberships on the day. A really successful day, one which really shows how great a club we have and points the way to future success. 3 The troublesome ZIP Hot water unit in the club house now works correctly I know some teams have complained that the new ZIP hot water unit isn t hot enough. I m pleased to advise that following a service call that I put into Knox Council, I have reprogrammed the unit and it all works as it should. You need to understand that this is a smart hot water unit and does have programming options to take advantage of energy saving modes built into it. The following photos sequence 1, 2, 3 shows the events for the ZIP hot water unit to produce 98 C hot water for your cuppa. Picture 1: Picture 1 - If you see the bed and zzz bottom right on the display. It means the unit has gone into energy saving mode and water in the unit will cool down from 98 C to 65 C. It enters that mode if no one has drawn water from the unit for 4 hours. With the cup shown in the display, it means the energy saving mode has been programmed and is active. Picture 2: Picture 2 With this display, the unit is out of energy saving mode and is heating the water from 65 C to 98 C. To get it into this mode you simply touch anyone of the black coloured sensitive buttons on the front control panel, this will kick the unit into the heat mode and will bring the hot water to 98 C in about 5 to 7 minutes. Picture 3: Picture 3 With the display showing BOILING WATER it means the temperature of the water in the unit is at 98 C. It is ready for you to make a cup of tea, coffee or filling up one of the stainless steel hot water pots. The unit is out of energy saving mode. When you arrive at the clubhouse and before you start playing tennis, you simply need to just go to the ZIP hot water unit and lightly touch any one of the four black buttons on the control panel and you ll have 98 C hot water for your cuppa for the next 4 hours before it will enter back into energy saving mode. I hope this will help everyone understand what the display is telling them.

4 All geared up with submitting applications for Grants and Sponsorship Your Committee has been hard at work submitting applications for Grants and Sponsorships over the past month. I ll give an update when we know more about the outcomes. Also committee members have been representing the club at a number of recent local community events which include Wantirna Community Bendigo Bank local business breakfast and local MP Nick Wakeling s Grand Final football breakfast. The club s image and profile are only further enhanced by our attendance at these events. Barry Cornell President NEWS FROM THE COMMITTEE Our tennis club is a SMOKE FREE FACILITY this must be observed NO SMOKING Would all members and visitors please note that we have a no smoking policy both within the pavilion and in the grounds of the WANTIRNA Tennis Club. The policy must be observed as it is a requirement and policy of Knox City Council for council owned facilities. The Council has recently adopted the Smoke Free Festival, Events and Council Facilities Policy. A copy of this Policy is now posted in the clubhouse on the notice board for your perusal, its effective immediately. An extract/summary of the policy states that the following areas are declared as smoke free: - Within the enclosed area(s) of the Council Facility; and - Within four metres of an enclosed area of a Council Facility/Grounds. A Council facility is defined as A Council owned or controlled building(s) and/or grounds that is owned, leased or otherwise under Council s control and may include car parks, roadways, paths, parks and open public space. Additionally, an enclosed area is defined as An area, room or premises that is substantially enclosed by a roof and walls, regardless of whether the roof or walls or any part of them are permanent or temporary and/or open or closed. The council recognises that this Policy will result in a significant cultural shift for sporting clubs and community groups. With that said, sporting clubs and community groups are asked to please work with Council to enforce this Policy to create designated smoke free areas for community members. Heart Attack Unfortunately Heart Attacks do occur and are often quite unpredictable! The club has a defibrillator unit mounted in a cabinet just inside the front door. (unlock with square key on clubhouse key ring. If key is not readily available break door glass/plastic window on unit) In an emergency please do not hesitate to use this unit. When its case is opened, the machine will commence speaking instructions to the operator, (even states if the unit is not required). The club has a Video demonstrating how to use the machine, and is available for members to watch at home by contacting any committee member.

5 Eastern Region Tennis (ERT) Junior Pennant series ERT are continuing their annual Junior Pennant series at our Club. This Junior tennis competition runs from 8-30am till 1-00pm each Sunday to early November. There will be no play on Melbourne Cup weekend. The competition will be using all the front courts. The back courts will still be available for members social tennis. GENERAL MAINTENANCE En Tout Cas Delivery A delivery of bulk en tout cas will be made in the next few days. This will be covered by a tarpaulin just inside of the double gates. Please keep clear of it. This will mainly be used for top dressing and for on- going maintenance of court 9 over the next month, as well as general use on other courts. It is much cheaper to purchase the en tout cas in bulk, and we apologise for the inconvenience. Court 9 Repairs We are about to resurface the club house end of court 9. Please keep well clear and do not play on it. Thank you. Water the Courts The timer has been adjusted to provided for more court watering during the overnight cycle, but members and players are requested to water the courts (even between sets) when they become dusty. Coil the Hoses Members are requested to please keep the court hoses coiled and to avoid tripping hazards by keeping them well clear of playing surfaces. We hope you enjoy your time playing at our Club. Baby News Congratulations to Chris Luu & his wife Susan, who have welcomed a new baby daughter Emma. Wedding News Congratulations and best wishes to Jeynelle Fry and Sam Sablinskis who are getting married this month. Sam is the eldest son of Paul and Fleur Sablinskis. Best wishes to the happy couple for a lifetime of happiness together.

Everything from red ball hot shots to squad training and private lessons, there's a program for everyone who is looking to improve. Cardio tennis has started on Wednesday nights and we will be adding new sessions over the next couple of weeks. It's a great session combining point play and drills so stay tuned. Any coaching enquiries enquiries@troyandmiketennis.com. Competition Summer comp has begun and we have 5 teams playing which is a significant increase on last season. Many of the kids are playing their first season for not only the club but it's their first taste of competition tennis. Well done to all who debuted last weekend and a big welcome to those that have moved clubs. It's an exciting time to be a junior member! Also, our orange ball hot shots league will be running every Friday over the next 8 weeks at the clubs. The league will feature 20 orange level players from the coaching program who will play a Davis cup style format in teams of 2. This is a great stepping stone for our players heading towards representing the club in Saturday competition. Anyone wishing to come down on either a Friday afternoon or Saturday morning you'll be sure to see some great tennis action! Troy & Mike Coaches
