1 REDBACKS Squash emag The RED STAR AWARD The NR Committee have announced the establishment of a Squash Award Program. This recognition of achievement program will be known as the Red Star Awards. The Awards will be open to all junior and senior players and coaches in NR. A Red Star Certificate will be awarded each month. A prestigious Red Star Annual Award will also be established. The Committee anticipates these awards will encourage recipients to strive for even greater glory on the court. Nominations are invited from the community before the last day of each month. Send your nomination to the address at the bottom of this page. There will also be a provision for Committee nominations. A panel of 3 people has been established to judge the award each month. 1 NORTHERN REGION RED STAR SQUASH AWARDS LOSS WINS Mackay s Tiffany Loss has won the inaugural Red Star Award for the month of September. 2 REDBACKS emag Promoting your club Marketing is about identifying and understanding your customer and giving them what they want. Effective marketing is a result of examining every aspect of your business and how it affects the consumer's end experience. It covers everything you'll need to do in order to deliver your products and services to the consumer including research, planning, pricing, packaging, promotion, selling and distribution. Advertising is a form of communication for marketing and used to encourage or persuade an audience (viewers, readers or listeners; sometimes a specific group) to continue or take some new action. Commercial advertisers often seek to generate increased consumption of their products or services through " branding", which involves the repetition of an image or product name in an effort to associate certain qualities with the brand in the minds of consumers. Promotion is part of marketing and includes personal selling, advertising, sales promotion, direct marketing and publicity. So what does this mean for our sport? Well if an owner or club or region want to grow their business they need to analyse and really get to know their customer: the squash player. The sport of squash boomed in the 70's and 80's. That era has gone and probably won't return. Our sport is just one of the many choices available to people to play. We are not just competing with alternative sports but sports who have the capacity to invest heavily in marketing and promotion. From a business perspective many owners are simply reactive and increase the price to survive. This has the potential to deter new customers because the price may appear excessive or they simply don't feel they are getting sufficient time on court for the price (value for money). Whilst a marketing plan is probably ideal for each specific location many owners simply don't have the skills to do it themselves or the money to invest in a detailed analysis. Some simple steps to take that won't break the bank are to develop a logo (brand), develop a website (or a Facebook Page) and build a year of activities to promote to existing customers. For future customers it is important that every club seriously look at building a junior development program. There are many low cost strategies to employ and sure it does take a little effort to build that calendar of events... but its worth it. The clubs that are doing well in NR adopt this strategy and prosper. Others sadly look at alternative solutions like turning courts into something else to increase the return on investment. Whilst this is totally understandable such strategies have the capacity to destroy our sport. This Newsletter is a commitment of the NR Committee to promote our great sport to the squash players of NR (the customer) that there is recognition and that there are many activities around NR that they can participate in. In turn there are some wonderful flow on benefits to our customers, community and the sport. As part of this story we would like to encourage you to get involved in World Squash Day on 20 October Check out the following website. 2

3 REDBACKS emag Cannonball Squash M ackay's Brad Hindle returned home recently to visit family and catch up with the current crop of juniors. Brad Hindle brought with him a Squash Cannon" to demonstrate its training benefits to club officials and the kids. In short the "Squash Cannon" features a 60 ball capacity, anti jam ball feeding mechanism with thermostatically controlled temperature to mimic match conditions. Hindle ran three, hour long coaching sessions with the ball machine. He was able to concentrate 100% on analysing a player's technique as opposed to feeding and analysing. The "Squash Cannon" did the feeding to the same spot repeatedly and at varying speeds. The "Squash Cannon" was well received with Mackay and Moranbah clubs set to invest in one each. 3

5 REDBACKS emag th Anniversary The 2012 Mackay Open will be the 35th staging of the event and a great reason to participate and celebrate this wonderful championship The Mackay Open was established by the then owners Henry and Sharon Trindorfer. They were encouraged by Ian Carlisle who was new to Mackay and a top player from Wales. Carlisle quickly established there was need for a tournament given the pool of talented players in North Queensland Kay Barclay won the women s title. She continues to this day to be the driving force behind the success of the Mackay Open. She has transformed the Mackay Open into a PSA and WSA endorsed event offering valuable world ranking points to young professional players. The event now attracts rising professional players from all over the world. This creates not only a wonderful spectacle for squash enthusiasts but helps to improve the standard of local players. The event would not be possible without the incredible support from a large number of local sponsors. Barclay works tirelessly throughout the year to organise sponsors, families to billet players and run the event the event was renamed the Leanne Pietzner Memorial after the tragic loss of one of Mackay's most promising players in a car accident the AIS chose to support the event to give their squad of talented juniors an opportunity to get more match play as part of their preparations for other events on the professional circuit. In that year Philip Larmer won the mens championship whilst 1981 World Champion Rhonda Thorne won the women's title. Mackay's has simply dominated the women's event with 9 titles whilst Mark "Tiger" Carlyon is the most prolific mens winner with 4 titles the women's final was played between Sarah Fitz- Gerald and Michelle Martin. Fitz-Gerald won that encounter but as history would testify it was only the humble beginnings for these two absolute legends of the game. In 1993 Martin won the first of 3 consecutive world titles and then Fitz-Gerald followed with 3 of her own before winning 5 in total. In 2012 Martin won the World Masters Championship Over 45 event saw John White from Townsville at the time win the event. He went on to become World No 1 and represented Scotland. White was known as the hardest hitter of the ball in the sport of squash Tully s Lisa Camilleri won the first of her 4 titles. Also in that year Mackay s Brad Hindle was the men's winner. He now represents Malta. When home, Hindle visits family and still takes the time to visit his old club to help coach our up and coming juniors Rockhampton's Craig Rowland won the the first of his two titles. In 2012 Rowland won the Over 40 World Masters Championships the event became known as the Mackay Open once again. It became the final leg of the Q Squash Rookie Pro Circuit. The inaugural winners of the Rookie Pro Circuit were Brad Freeme and Lisa Camilleri who also happened to win the final leg of the circuit in Mackay. Continued next page 4

8 REDBACKS emag Junior Pathway Australia desperately needs to unearth fresh junior talent and develop those players to ultimately represent Australia at the World Junior Championships. A player's progression along the pathway is identified by competing at various levels and demonstrating a capacity to handle the standard of play at each specific level. Whilst not an exact science a player should be striving to achieve a Top 4 Ranking at the various levels: Regional, State and National to be considered highly competent at such levels. A player should strive to firstly establish a ranking at each level, followed by a Top 10 ranking and finally, a Top 4 ranking. Juniors develop and progress at different rates. Some are more athletic or gifted and rise to the top of their age group very quickly. Others have to find their feet and progress at a slower rate. Some need to get fitter or get some additional skill training. Most juniors benefit from regular training and competition. Getting started: A junior begins to learn the game. If fortunate they receive some early basic training like learning the rules, learning to serve and how to hit 6 the ball to the back of the court. Level 1: The player seeks regular competition and generally plays in a local in house competition at their club. As the junior improves his/her skills they may then aspire to represent their club or school. Level 2: In a bid to find greater competition most players begin attending Junior Qualifiers in a bid to establish their first ranking and to gain selection for their Regional Team ( Redbacks). Remember these junior qualifiers are open to everyone regardless of what results they have previously achieved or the type of competitions they have played in at their club or school. Once a player gets a Regional Ranking they are well and truly on the development path. They are usually hooked on the sport and are then encouraged to represent their Region at the State Championships (QJC). Level 3: A player competes at the QJC and establishes a State Ranking. At this level a player may also be striving to represent their school at the State Secondary Schools Championship and their State at the Trans Tasman Schools Championship (QLD NSW NZ). Level 4: The junior is now competing at National events looking to establish a National Ranking. Queensland Reps (Sharks) will also be competing in the Teams Championship. It is at the Australian Junior Closed Championships (AJC) in September when National selectors begin to search for potential players to represent Australia in the future. There is also another National event called the AJO (Australian Junior Open Championship) which occurs around Easter that players should strive to compete at as well. The AJO gives players an opportunity to get international competition on home soil. At both the AJC and AJO a number of players are selected to join the National Talent Squad (NTS). Once in the NTS there is an expectation the player will now compete in Open events to build a world ranking. The idea here is for these juniors to compete against seniors and learn to deal with much more pressure. Level 5: A player is selected to to represent Australia at the World Junior Team Championships (WJTC) which are held each year on an alternative basis. The girls team will compete next in 2013 followed by the boys in Ingham Junior Qualifier October 2012
