The Rainbow Wahine face Idaho on Saturday, Nov. 14 and finish against Utah State on Monday, Nov. 16. The Rainbow Wahine remain No. 3 in both the AVCA Coaches Poll and the Volleyball Magazine Poll, after picking up two home wins last week. UH enters the week with a 23-2 overall record and a 13-0 WAC mark. The Rainbow Wahine have won 19 straight matches, including going 5-0 in road matches. Shoji now has 1,007 victories all-time. Danielson Stays Hot Kanani Danielson has been playing at a high level for the past two weeks. In her last three matches, Danielson averaged 4.78 kills and 2.89 digs per set, while hitting an outstanding.458 from the outside hitter position. The sophomore had 15 kills and hit.519 against San Jose State on Nov. 2, had 15 kills and hit.387 against Fresno State on Nov. 6 and finished the week off with 13 kills and 14 digs, while hitting.480 against Utah State on Nov. 8. Kaufman Has Big Senior Night In her final regular season home match of her career, senior Amber Kaufman had 10 kills, reaching the double-digit kill mark for the seventh time this season against Utah State on Nov. 8. Over her final two home matches, Kaufman had 18 kills and hit.419. She currently ranks third in the country in hitting percentage at.477. Cubi-Otineru Puts On Show In front of several hundred family members on senior night Sunday, Nov. 8 against Utah State, Aneli Cubi-Otineru put on a show. Cubi-Otineru had a match-high 13 kills and hit.458 in the three-set sweep. She also added six digs and two aces. Five Seniors Honored Sunday Following Sunday s match against Utah State, five seniors were honored as they played in their final home match. UH honored seniors Stephanie Brandt, Aneli Cubi- Otineru, Catherine Fowler, Amber Kaufman and Jayme Lee, with a ceremony following the match. UH Ranked No. 3 In AVCA Poll And Volleyball Magazine The Rainbow Wahine remain at No. 3 in this week s AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll and Volleyball Magazine Poll. The Rainbow Wahine have won 19-straight matches. Hawai i has enjoyed a successful run of 262-consecutive weeks in the AVCA Coaches Poll. Hawai i also has appeared in 391 of the 395 (.989) polls all-time. UH is third in poll appearances, behind only Nebraska and Stanford, who have both appeared in all 395 polls. Hawai i also ranks third to Stanford and Nebraska in weeks ranked in the top 10 (301) and rank third to Nebraska and UCLA in weeks ranked at No. 1 (48). In its 48 weeks as the No. 1 team in the country, UH boasts a (.923) record. National Ranks As a team the Rainbow Wahine rank second in the country in hitting percentage at.319 overall. Individually, Amber Kaufman ranks 3rd in hitting percentage at.477 on the year and Brittany Hewitt ranks 12th in the nation in blocks per set at Dani Mafua ranks 12th in assists per set at and Aneli Cubi-Otineru ranks 5th in aces per set at UH Carries 19-Match Win Streak The Rainbow Wahine come into the week having won 19-straight matches, including their first 13 WAC matches. UH has only dropped three sets during the win streak, winning 57 out of 60 sets played. Playing just miles from where she grew up, Kaufman recorded 11 kills on 13 swings, hitting.846 for the match. Danielson Earns Fourth WAC POW Sophomore outside hitter Kanani Danielson was named WAC Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 26-Nov. 1. This marks the fourth WAC Player of the Week honor of the season for Danielson and the fifth of her career. Danielson tallied 37 kills, 12 digs, five blocks and five assists as Hawai i went 2-0 in WAC matches last week to remain undefeated in conference play. Danielson averaged 5.29 kills on.368 hitting, 2.16 digs, 0.71 blocks and 0.57 assists per set. She opened the week by tying her career high with 22 kills on.425 hitting to go with seven digs and two assists in a nationally-televised match at Fresno State. It was the third time this season she posted 20 or more kills in a match. Danielson followed that up with 15 kills, five digs and four blocks in a sweep of Nevada Road Ready After playing 18 of their first 20 matches at home, the Rainbow Wahine end the season with six of their final eight WAC matches on the road. Rainbow Wahine on the Air The Rainbow Wahine have all of their home matches televised on KFVE (Channel 5) in Honolulu, except for a few matches that will be shown on payper-view. All matches (road matches included) are also available on radio on ESPN Radio (1420 am). The radio broadcasts will also be streaming live over the Internet at Fans Come Out For Shoji On Saturday, Oct. 17, the Stan Sheriff Center was filled with 9,293 fans for Dave Shoji s 1,000th victory. Saturday s match was the highest attended match since the 2006 NCAA Regional Final against UCLA, which drew 9,572 fans. It was also the highest regular season match since 2004, when 9,875 fans showed up for a match against Nevada on Nov. 13. Aneli Aces In matches against New Mexico State (Oct. 17) and Louisiana Tech (Oct. 19), senior outside hitter Aneli Cubi-Otineru was on fire from behind the service line. Cubi- Otineru had seven aces in two matches, including four against New Mexico State and three against Louisiana Tech. On the season, Cubi-Otineru has a team-leading 38 aces. She also ranks fourth in the country in aces per set, averaging Kaufman Goes Perfect Senior middle Amber Kaufman had a perfect night against Louisiana Tech. In just two sets, Kaufman had eight kills on eight swings with no errors, hitting a perfect Kaufman s previous career-high in hitting percentage came earlier this season when she hit.765 against Santa Clara. Eight Straight 3-0 Wins The Rainbow Wahine won eight straight matches by a 3-0 score, ending against New Mexico State on Oct. 3, when UH won in four sets. UH started the streak against Weber State on Sept. 10, and have beat No. 10 Stanford and No. 25 Pepperdine (twice) by the score of 3-0. On the season, UH has won 14 matches overall by a 3-0 score. Forsythe Records Career-High Sophomore middle Alexis Forsythe came off the bench to record six kills against BYU- Hawai i on Oct. 23. Forsythe played just two sets, hit.500 and added five blocks. Kaufman Records Career High Senior middle blocker Amber Kaufman had a career-high 15 kills against Nevada on Oct. 8. Kaufman had 15 kills on 20 swings and one error, hitting.700 for the match. Kaufman had 13 kills twice earlier this season to tie a then career-high. All-Around For Danielson Kanani Danielson had two all-around performances against Nevada and San Jose State. Danielson had 23 kills, 10 digs and seven blocks in six sets played over the two matches. She averaged 3.83 kills, 1.67 digs and 1.17 blocks per set. Danielson also tied a career-high with five blocks against San Jose State on Oct. 9. Strong Two Sets For Hewitt Against San Jose State Oct. 9, redshirt freshman Brittany Hewitt had an impressive two sets. Hewitt had eight kills on 10 swings with one error, hitting.700. Hewitt also had six blocks, including one solo block. Her numbers came in the first two sets, sitting out the final set of the match. UH played its first 13 matches at home, before taking a twomatch road trip for WAC play. UH beat Louisiana Tech 3-0 on Oct. 1 and New Mexico State 3-1 on Oct. 3. Rainbow Wahine Record 12 Blocks For the second time this season, UH has recorded 12 blocks as a team. The Rainbow Wahine had 12 blocks against New Mexico State on Oct. 3. The 12 blocks are the second most this season, behind 14 blocks against Santa Clara on Aug. 29. UH also recorded 12 blocks against Pepperdine on Sept. 18. Mafua Sets The Way In two matches against Boise State and Idaho, junior setter Dani Mafua set the offense to a.399 hitting percentage and tied a couple career highs along the way. Mafua tied a career-high with four kills against Idaho on Sept. 26, hitting a perfect on four attempts and tied a career-high with five blocks in the match. Over the two matches, Mafua averaged assists, 1.00 kills, 1.33 digs and 1.33 blocks per set. Mixing It Up Against Boise State on Sept. 24, the Rainbow Wahine had a different starting lineup for the first time this season. Without sophomore outside hitter Kanani Danielson, sophomore Corinne Cascioppo made her first start of her career. Cascioppo had two kills, two digs and three blocks in the match. Senior defensive specialist Jayme Lee also made her first start of the season, recording four kills in the win. Cubi-Otineru Named WAC Player Of The Week Senior outside hitter Aneli Cubi-Otineru was named WAC Player of the Week for the week of Sept It was the first-ever WAC Player of the Week honor for Cubi- Otineru. The senior tallied 18 kills, 20 digs, five blocks and three service aces in backto-back sweeps of No. 25 Pepperdine. Cubi-Otineru averaged 3.00 kills, 3.33 digs, 0.83 blocks and 0.50 service aces to lead the Rainbow Wahine to their fourth and fifth straight victories. In the second match, she was one kill shy of a double-double, finishing with nine kills and 12 digs. UH Records Program s 1,000th Win UH s victory over Stanford on Sept. 12 was the program s 1,000th victory since playing a Division I schedule in The Rainbow Wahine have won four national titles in that span and participated in 27 NCAA Tournaments. Head Coach Dave Shoji has recorded 999 of the 1008 wins at UH. Overall UH s record is (.850) in 36 years. Danielson Earns Second Player Of The Week Honor Sophomore Kanani Danielson was named Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of Sept It was her second honor of the season and the third of her career. The sophomore outside hitter tallied 34 kills, 19 digs and seven blocks over three matches en route to earning Most Outstanding Player honors at the Honolulu Advertiser Volleyball Challenge. Danielson averaged 3.78 kills with a.466 hitting percentage as she led Hawai i to the tournament title with wins over Weber State (3-0), UT-San Antonio (3-0) and No. 10 Stanford (3-0). Danielson had 13 kills and hit.455 against No. 10 Stanford in the championship match. Sophomore Kanani Danielson was named Most Outstanding Player, her second MOP award this year. Danielson averaged 3.78 kills and 2.11 digs per set and hit.466 over the three matches. Senior Amber Kaufman earned her first all-tournament team selection this year and the second of her career. Kaufman hit. 590 over the three matches and averaged 3.25 kills per set. Dani Mafua earned her second all-tournament team selection, averaging assists, 1.33 digs and 1.11 blocks per set. Strong Hitting Performance The Rainbow Wahine had their best hitting performance of the year in the Honolulu Advertiser Volleyball Challenge. UH hit.422 over the three matches, including hitting a season-high.500 against UT-San Antonio. UH s second highest hitting percentage of the year came against No. 10 Stanford, when UH hit.392 for the match, including 51 kills in three sets. Danielson Hits For Career-High Kanani Danielson had a near perfect hitting night against UT-San Antonio on Sept. 11 during the second match of the Honolulu Advertiser Volleyball Challenge. Danielson had 10 kills on 16 attempts with no errors in the three-set match. Danielson hit a career-high.625 for the match, which also including six digs and four blocks. Cubi-Otineru Named To Wahine Classic All-Tourney Team Senior outside hitter Aneli Cubi-Otineru was named to the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic All-Tournament team following last weekend s matches. Cubi-Otineru averaged 2.46 kills, 2.23 digs and 1.00 blocks against No. 2 Texas, No. 10 California and No. 19 Saint Louis. The all-tournament marks the second straight week Cubi- Otineru was named to an all-tournament team and is the second year in a row she was named to the Wahine Classic all-tournament team. This Week in Rainbow Wahine History Nov. 6-14, UH wins three WAC matches over TCU, SMU and Tulsa, on Nov. 6, 8 and 14. In each of the three matches, the Rainbow Wahine recorded one 15-0 game, marking the only time that Hawai i did that in back-to-back-to-back matches. Nov. 10, The Rainbow Wahine fall to Stanford in three games in front of a sold-out Stan Sheriff Center. The build-up to the match was huge as it was sold out for over a week and pitted the No. 1 Rainbow Wahine against the secondranked Cardinal. Hawai i would again face the Cardinal later that year in the national semi-final match, but again fell in three games. The two losses to Stanford were UH s only two losses of the year. Nov , Hawai i sweeps through long-time nemesis Long Beach State twice in the schools only two meeting of the year. The 49ers had ended UH s sea- son in five of the previous six years. The Rainbow Wahine went on to their only perfect regular season that year. Nov , In the revival of the WAC Tournament, the Rainbow Wahine sweep through Tulsa, Fresno State and San Jose State to take the title in San Jose, Calif. 7 Dave Shoji has been a mainstay in both the realm of athletics in Hawai i and in the volleyball community for the past 35 years. Shoji became just the second women s volleyball coach in NCAA Division I history to reach the 1,000 career victories milestone on Oct. 17, The legendary coach still remains one of the best in the country, leading his team to 14 consecutive conference titles and appearances in 10 of the last 11 NCAA regionals. The honors have piled up for Shoji over the years. He is a nine-time conference and region Coach of the Year and was named the national Coach of the Year in Shoji was named to the list of all-time great coaches by USA Volleyball in He has also been inducted into Hawai i Sports Hall of Fame and was named coach of the NCAA 25th Anniversary team. In 1975, a young Shoji took over the reins of the UH women s volleyball program. He was just 28 years old with no clue that he would turn a one-year-old program into a national powerhouse for the next three decades. The team was coming off a 9-1 campaign in 1974 that ended with the Rainbow Wahine falling to UCLA in the national title match at the AIAW Championship. In Shoji s first four years at the helm of the program, he took the team to two more national title matches before he finally broke through to take the title in 1979 with a five-game victory over Utah State in the AIAW finals. It was the school s first-ever team national championship and a sign of great things to come for the young program. In 1981, Shoji became UH s first full-time coach for a women s program. He led the team to another national title, this time in the new NCAA Tournament in 1982, beating the USC Women of Troy in a come-from-behind five-game thriller. Shoji would lead the team to another title in 1983 with a straight-set win over UCLA, becoming the first school to win back-to-back NCAA championships. The Rainbow Wahine again returned to the national championship match in 1987, capping a 37-2 season with a sweep of Stanford for the program s fourth national title and third NCAA title. The team lost to Texas in the 1988 national championship match, then went through a stretch of five frustrating losses in six years to rival Long Beach State in the NCAA Regionals, holding them out of the NCAA Championships. UH looked primed to return to the final four in 1995, going through the season undefeated at After winning their regional match over Arizona State, Hawai i was set for a national championship run. But Michigan State dealt a heartbreaking blow to those plans, coming back from being down two games to none, to hold the Rainbow Wahine out of the NCAA Championships. Hawai i would finally make that return in 1996, dropping just one set in the first four matches of the NCAA Tournament. But another long-time nemesis of the Rainbow Wahine, Stanford, stopped UH s bid for a national title, sweeping Hawai i in the championship match. The Rainbow Wahine experienced another great run of success that started with the 1998 season, as transfer Heather Bown led the team from a perennial Top 25 squad and NCAA Tournament team to again a national-title contender. Hawai i made its way to the NCAA Regional Final in 1998 and was one of the top seeds in the 1999 tournament before a scrappy Texas A&M team beat UH in the regionals. Following that season, Louisiana-native Kim Willoughby came to the program, joining Lily Kahumoku, who was already establishing herself as one of the best players in the country, to form a dynamic duo that would lead the team to great success for another four years. From , the Rainbow Wahine advanced to the NCAA Championship national semifinal match three times, while Shoji s 2003 senior class became the winningest class in school history. Under Shoji, UH volleyball finished in the Top 10 in 22 of the 27 final AVCA polls, and ranked in the top five 14 times. They have made it to the postseason in all but one year, finishing with a winning record in all 34 seasons. The 63-year-old was also responsible for the start of the men s volleyball program in Shoji served as the men s coach at UH from , compiling a record of 81-48, leading the team to a Western Collegiate Volleyball Conference title in Shoji was a three-sport athlete at Upland High School in California, playing football, basketball and baseball. He then moved on to UC Santa Barbara, where he played baseball for a year, along with three years of volleyball. He earned All- America honors as a volleyball player in 1968 and 69. He earned his bachelor s degree in physical education in After spending two years in the U.S. Army, Shoji returned to Hawai i to coach the Kalani High School girls and boys volleyball teams. He then took an assistant coaching job at Punahou School. Shoji and his wife, the former Mary Tennefos, reside in Manoa. They have three children. Cobey, 30, works at Stanford University. Kawika, 20, and Erik, 18, play for the Stanford men s volleyball team.
