USU will then host Middle Tennessee State, Southern Utah and San Francisco on Friday and Saturday as part of the Gossner Invitational. It is always fun to be at home and play in front of our fans, head coach Grayson DuBose said. It will be particularly special because of those in-state games. I think records and conference alignments go out the window when you face those instate schools, he continued. You just go out and match up and both matches will be fun that way. Utah State will enter the week with an overall mark of 1-2 after opening the 2015 season at the Texas Tech Fall Invitational. The Aggies suffered a 3-0 defeat to Texas Tech and a 3-1 loss to Houston before finishing the tournament with a 3-0 sweep against Louisiana-Lafayette. Junior outside Kaylie Kamalu led the Aggies during the weekend with team highs of 32 kills and six service aces. Sophomore middle Carly Lenzen was named to the all-tournament team after finishing the weekend with 15 kills, hitting.389 with only one error on 36 attempts. Lenzen also tallied an ace in each match and logged six digs and six blocks during the tournament. Utah State debuted all five of its newcomers during the weekend with freshman middle Lauren O Brien leading the team with a.417 hitting percentage ( ) and freshman defensive specialist Tasia Taylor finishing third on the team with 24 digs. Utah State will meet Utah for the 70th time on Tuesday night, marking the longest rivalry for the Aggies. USU trails the Utes in the all-time series and have lost each of the last three matches. Utah State will close out the week, hosting the Gossner Classic, a tournament that the Aggies have held five of the last six seasons. Our program is grateful for the support of Gossners and the way they support the University and the valley, DuBose said. It will be great to play those three matches in a row and try and get on a little roll at the beginning of the season. Utah State opens the tournament on Friday, hosting Middle Tennessee State at 7 p.m., a team that the Aggies have never faced in the history of the program. USU then faces in-state foe Southern Utah, Saturday at noon, before wrapping up the weekend against San Francisco, Saturday night at 7 p.m. Utah State last faced Southern Utah in 2012, with the Aggies coming out on top 3-1 in Logan. USU and USF tussled last season at the Hawai i Outrigger Invitational, with Utah State coming away with the win, 3-1. As a team, Utah has hit.302 this season, recording 167 kills (15.18 per set) on 398 attempts with 47 errors. The Utes run a 6-2 system with senior Kendall Cygan and redshirt freshman Jessie Jorgensen sharing time at setter and totaling 77 and 60 assists, respectively. Head coach Beth Lauriere is in her 26th year as head coach of the Utes, compiling an overall mark of over that span. Utah State and Utah have faced 69 times on the volleyball court, representing the longest rivalry for the Aggies, with Utah holding the all-time series advantage Last Time Against Utah Kaylie Kamalu recorded a career-high 14 kills against the Utes, but the Aggies only hit.159 ( ) during the night as Utah hit.311 ( ) for the 3-0 victory in Logan on Sept. 17, Scouting Middle Tennessee State Middle Tennessee State will enter the weekend with an overall mark of 1-3 after picking up its only victory against Bowling Green (3-0) in its home hosted Blue Raider Bash last weekend. The Blue Raiders suffered losses to Cleveland State (3-0), Indiana (3-2) and Notre Dame (3-1). MTSU is led offensively by senior outside Chelsea Ross with 74 kills, averaging 4.93 per set, hitting.250 on 180 attempts and 29 errors. Ross attempts are close to double that of redshirt junior middle Miri Shade with 99 attempts and 35 kills. The Blue Raiders also run a 6-2 system with freshman Delaney Taylor and sophomore Brianna Pannone sharing the setting duties, totaling 76 and 74 assists, respectively. Overall, Middle Tennessee State is hitting.193 on the year with 184 kills (12.2 per set) on 472 attempts with 93 errors. 4 Longest Aggie Feud Utah State and Utah will meet for the 70th time when the teams take to the court on Tuesday night. The series is the longest against any opponent for the Aggies with Utah owning the all-time series lead, In-State Opponents Utah State is (.426) all-time against opponents from the Beehive State. USU is all-time against Utah, all-time against BYU, 2-1 all-time against Southern Utah and all-time against Weber State. Facing Former Staff Southern Utah head coach Craig Choate served as an assistant coach with Utah State during the 2013 season. Going Extra Utah State and San Franciso faced off at the 2014 Hawai i Outrigger Invitational with USU coming away with the win, 3-1. However, the team stretched beyond 25 in three of the four sets, with Utah State taking sets one and four, 32-30, and USF taking set two, Glass is One-Thirds Full Utah State returns 31 percent of its total kills this season. Leading the way is junior outside Kaylie Kamalu, who finished third on the team last season with 232 kills. Senior Moments Utah State s 2015 roster does not include any seniors. The squad is made up of three juniors, six sophomores and four freshmen. Picked Eighth Utah State was selected eighth in the annual Mountain West Preseason Coaches Poll, garnering 39 points. On the court and in the Classroom Utah State was recognized with the 2014 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. 5 Head Coach Grayson DuBose Brigham Young, 1993 Tenth Season at Utah State Overall Record (.539) Grayson DuBose is entering his 10th season as Utah State s head volleyball coach after being hired on March 27, DuBose is the longest tenured volleyball coach in school history. In his nine years at USU, DuBose (pronounced Do-Boze) has brought stability to one of the top programs in the region as he has coached two All-Americans and 23 all-conference selections. Off the court, 31 of his student-athletes have earned academic all-conference honors a total of 71 times, as well as six academic all-district recipients. He is also one of just four coaches in school history to have a winning record and enters the 2015 season as the longest tenured coach, in addition to the second-winningest coach in program history. I consider it a distinguished honor to be the head coach of the Utah State University volleyball program. My family and I love Logan and the University, and we re proud to call this place home, DuBose said. During my time here, I have deeply enjoyed sharing the passion for the sport of volleyball with not just our student-athletes, but our staff, administration and community. In 2014, DuBose led the Aggie volleyball program into new territory, as USU opened up a new volleyball competition facility, Kirby Court at the Wayne Estes Center. DuBose had an integral voice in the design and layout of the new facility, which includes space for a competition court, two practice courts, team film room, team lounge, team locker room, strength and conditioning center, meeting rooms, coaches offices and an athletic training room. The brand new facility saw the Aggies go 7-6 at home, marking the ninth consecutive year that USU has had a winning record at home under DuBose. Individually, DuBose mentored senior Kaitlyn VanHoff to all-mountain West honors in addition to his charges earning nine academic all-mountain West citations and six Mountain West Scholar-Athlete accolades. DuBose led Utah State into the Mountain West in 2013, where the Aggies posted a overall and 13-7 MW record. The 20-win season was the second in a row and third in the last four years, all under DuBose, and also marked the first time that USU had posted back-to-back 20-win seasons since 2000 and Overall, it was the Aggies 12th 20-win season in 38 seasons of USU volleyball. USU spikers also had success in the classroom in 2013, earning seven academic all-mountain West honors and five Mountain West Scholar-Athlete accolades. Under DuBose s leadership, USU notched the 600th all-time win in program history with its first victory of the 2013 season. The Aggies are believed to be the 102nd program in NCAA history to reach the 600- win plateau, according to available records. Sophomore opposite side hitter Elle Brainard capped the season by becoming the first Aggie volleyball player to earn all-mountain West honors. In 2012, DuBose led USU to the regular-season Western Athetic Conference title, as the Aggies collected nine conference postseason awards, including DuBose being named WAC Coach of the Year, while redshirt-freshman Brainard was tabbed WAC Freshman of the Year. The Coach of the Year award was DuBose s second as head coach of the Aggies and the first time in school history that a USU volleyball coach had earned multiple Coach of the Year honors. Paige Neves, Rachel Orr, Shay Sorensen and Josselyn White all earned first-team all-wac honors, while Brainard and Kaitlyn VanHoff were tabbed to the second-team. Brainard was also named to the all-freshman team. USU s three first-team honorees in 2012 were the most in its eight years in the WAC and only the second time in school history to earn three first-team all-conference honors, joining 2000 when three Aggies collected first-team all-big West Conference honors in Amy Crosbie, Denae Mohlman and Melissa Schoepf. Three other Aggies also earned honorable mention all-big West honors. Utah State s block was especially strong in 2012 as the team finished ninth in the nation with 3.00 blocks per set, continuing a tradition of being among the national leaders. The trend followed the 2011 team which ranked 10th with 2.79 blocks per set and the 2010 team that ranked ninth with 2.89 blocks per set. The 2012 season was also another well-decorated one off the court, as eight Aggie players earned academic all-wac accolades. Under DuBose s leadership in 2011, Liz McArthur and Shay Sorensen earned all-wac honors while Paige Neves was named to the all-freshman team. Off the court, the Aggies also had noteworthy success with eight players earning academic all-wac honors, including McArthur earning first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII honors for the second-straight year. Utah State had one of its best seasons in school history in 2010, winning its first-ever WAC Tournament Championship and advancing to its fourth NCAA Tournament in school history. Overall, Utah State became just the third team in the history of the WAC to win its tournament championship as it was the first school in 11 years to defeat perennial power Hawai i in the championship match. USU finished the year with a 24-9 record, including a third-place conference finish with a 9-7 league mark. Those 24 wins in 2010 were not only the seventh-most in school history, but the most since Utah State also had four players earn all-wac honors during the season, including McArthur, who was named to the first team. McArthur was also named the Most Valuable Player of the 2010 WAC Tournament and went on to earn American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) honorable mention All-American honors. USU also had seven players earn academic all-wac honors in 2010, while senior middle blocker Katie Astle joined McArthur on the academic all-district team. DuBose also received national attention in 2010 as he was named one of five finalists for the Collegiate Volleyball Update National Coach of the Year award. The 2008 and 2009 squads combined for 26 victories over the two years as four Aggies earned all-conference accolades in 2008 with eight more earning academic all-wac honors. In 2009, Liz McArthur was awarded the first of three all-wac citations in her career and was one of nine Aggies recognized with academic all-wac honors. DuBose also had plenty of success during the 2007 season as he led Utah State to a record and a third-place conference finish with an 11-5 mark. Among those 11 league victories was one of the biggest wins in school history as USU posted a three-set sweep at No. 10 Hawai i, snapping a 108-match home conference winning streak for the Rainbow Wahine. Following the 2007 season, DuBose had four players recognized by the WAC as senior Amanda Nielson was named first-team all-conference and an AVCA honorable mention All-American, while setter Chelsea Fowles was named the Freshman of the Year in the WAC. DuBose was also honored in 2007 as he became the first volleyball coach in school history to garner conference Coach of the Year honors. In his nine complete seasons at the helm of the Aggie program, DuBose has a (.536) record, coaching his 200th career match as head coach vs. San José State on Oct. 13, DuBose earned his 100th career win with the Aggies victory against Seattle on Sept. 20, DuBose became just the second coaching position to reach 100 wins as Marilyn McReavy and Mary Jo Peppler hold the school record with 209 wins as they were co-head coaches from USU has won 20 matches a total of 12 times in school history, including three under DuBose in the 2010, 2012 and 2013 seasons. Prior to accepting the head coaching position at Utah State, DuBose spent four seasons ( ) as an assistant on Brigham Young University s men s volleyball team, helping the Cougars win the national title in In his four seasons at Brigham Young, DuBose helped lead the Cougars men s program to a (.750) record, including a National Championship in 2004 and a second-place finish at the 2003 NCAA Tournament. During his time at BYU, he coached nine All-Americans, including the 2004 NCAA Player of the Year. DuBose began his coaching career as an assistant at Brighton High School in Sandy, Utah, from and also assisted with the Cache Valley Juniors and the Mountain West Volleyball Club during that time period. Following his two-year stint at Utah State, DuBose spent one year as an assistant to Peterson at the University of New Mexico, working with the women s program, before following Peterson to Brigham Young. DuBose began his collegiate coaching career at Utah State from as an assistant to Tom Peterson. During that time, the Aggies won the Eastern Division of the Big West Conference in 1999 and advanced to the school s first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2000, defeating Missouri in the first round. USU finished the 2000 season ranked 22nd in the country, the program s first-ever top 25 ranking. DuBose played two years of collegiate volleyball at Golden West Community College in Huntington Beach, Calif., after graduating from Edison High School in Huntington Beach, where he earned all-county honors his senior season.
