Greyhounds (0-0) Preseason Polls The Wolverines were picked to finish fifth in the annual preseason Big Ten poll by the conference coaches. In the AVCA preseason poll, U-M was slotted as the No. 12 team in the country following its campaign. It is the highest preseason ranking ever for the Wolverines. Individual Honors Senior setter Lexi Zimmerman and junior outside hitter Alex Hunt were named to the preseason All- Big Ten team. Zimmerman, an AVCA first team All- American in 2009, was a unanimous choice in earning her third straight preseason distinction, while Hunt was recognized for the first time in her career. A Look Back at 2009 The Wolverines ended the 2009 season with a No. 9 ranking after reaching the NCAA Regional Final for the first time ever. U-M closed with a (12-4 Big Ten) record, the most wins in a season during the Mark Rosen era. Lexi Zimmerman was named a first team All-American while Juliana Paz was third team selection, marking the first time that Michigan had multiple honorees. MICHIGAN Wolverines (0-0) at Toledo Rockets (0-0) Wolverine Storylines Top Returners vs What s New in 2010 U-M lost four players to graduation -- Megan Bower, Juliana Paz, Cassie Petoskey and Veronica Rood -- while welcoming five freshmen to the team. Jennifer Cross, Lexi Erwin, Brittany Lee, Ally Sabol and Molly Toon are all entering their first season in the Maize and Blue. Lee is a redshirt freshman after transferring from Purdue. She retains four years of eligibility after receiving a redshirt year in 2009 and is eligible this season. Zimmerman Assist Watch Senior setter Lexi Zimmerman currently has 4,611 career assists, needing just 462 to overtake Linnea Mendoza (5,072) as the program s all-time leader in helpers. Mendoza has held the career standard since Zimmerman is currently third on the all-time list, behind Lisa Gamalski s second-place total of 4,762. Going Home This weekend s Rocket Classic marks a return home for senior defensive specialist Maggie Busch. Busch went to nearby Toledo Christian High School before coming to Ann Arbor. # POS YR PLAYER K/S A/S D/S B/S SA/S WORTH NOTING 3 LIB JR Sloane Donhoff Started all 37 matches in MB JR Karlee Bruck Split time at MB in OH JR Alex Hunt Preseason All-Big Ten 12 DS SR Maggie Busch Started eight matches in RS SO Claire McElheny Appeared in five matches in MB JR Courtney Fletcher Split time at MB in S SR Lexi Zimmerman Needs 462 assists to be all-time leader *2009 stats Friday, Aug p.m. vs MICHIGAN Wolverines (0-0) vs. Binghamton Bearcats(0-0) Saturday, Aug p.m. TV: BCSN (live) PAGE 1

Last season, U-M kicked off the slate with a 3-0 sweep of No. 3 Nebraska at the AVCA Showcase. Highest Preseason Ranking The Wolverines received a No. 12 ranking in the AVCA Coaches Preseason Poll, the highest starting slot in program history. It is only the second time Michigan has been ranked to start the season, improving upon the No. 16 ranking in A Look at the Opponents Binghamton -- The Wolverines are 1-0 all-time versus the Bearcats, winning the first match-up 3-1 (30-32, 30-16, 30-17, 30-21) during the 2006 season. The last time these teams met was also in Toledo at the season-opening tournament. The Bearcats were tabbed to repeat as America East champions, returning five starters from a 2009 squad that went with a 5-5 conference mark. Loyola (Md.) -- Saturday s match will mark Michigan s first-ever meeting with the Greyhounds, who are coming off a season in Loyola recorded a 10-8 MAAC record en route to a fifth-place conference finish. The Greyhounds return five starters and welcome nine freshmen to the 2010 team. Toledo -- Michigan is a perfect 15-0 against the host Rockets, with the last meeting between the two a 3-0 U-M victory in Toledo was picked to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference West Division after going and tying for second in the division last season. UT returns five starters, including All-MAC performers Amber DeWeerdt and Kassie Kadera, to the 2010 lineup. The match-up between Toledo and Michigan will be broadcast live on Buckeye Cable Sports Network (BCSN). Rosen Records in 2009 The Wolverines won a Mark Rosen-era record 27 matches last season, advancing to the team s first-ever regional final. Rosen s previous best was 26 wins in In addition, Michigan s fourth-place finish in the Big Ten was the 12th-year head coach s best finish. Captains For the second consecutive season, junior Sloane Donhoff and senior Lexi Zimmerman will serve as team captains. Completing the trio of captains for 2010 is junior outside hitter Alex Hunt, who is a first-time captain. Leaders Returning Despite losing three starters from last year s team, the Wolverines have plenty returning. Alex Hunt led the team last year in total attempts (1,239) and service aces (57), Sloane Donhoff was the leader in digs (549) and Lexi Zimmerman was tops in assists (1,516). The trio also played in all 138 sets during 2009 with Zimmerman and Donhoff earning starts in all 37 matches. Team Streaking The Wolverines have started at least 12-0 in each of the past four seasons. U-M started a program-best 13-0 in 2006, 2007 and 2008 before falling one match short of matching the feat in Oregon State ended Michigan s streak of 52 consecutive victories over non-conference opponents in the regular season while keeping the Wolverines from their fourth consecutive 13-0 start. The Beavers swept the Wolverines last season in the final match of the Michigan/adidas Invitational at Crisler Arena (Sept. 19, 2009). Streaking Individually Lexi Zimmerman has played in 107 consecutive matches, earning the starting nod at setter in every match since stepping foot on campus. Junior Sloane Donhoff has appeared in all 72 matches the past two seasons, while Alex Hunt has played in 59 straight. Zimmerman Goes South Over the Summer Senior setter Lexi Zimmerman gained some international experience this summer, playing for the Bring It Promotions/USA U22 Development team in a tour of Brazil. She was named MVP of the team s first match as the team played multiple matches against some of Brazil s best. Rosen Coaches for the Red, White and Blue Head coach Mark Rosen served as one of two head coaches of the USAVolleyball A2 program over the summer, his first time with the national program. He led his U.S. Women s National A2 Blue Team to the Open Division gold medal at the USA Volleyball Open National Championships in Phoenix, Ariz. The Blue Team went 6-1, sweeping all three matches during the playoffs to capture the gold medal. Taking Down the Best In 2009, U-M knocked off four ranked opponents, including a pair of No. 3-ranked teams. To begin the season, the Wolverines defeated No. 3 Nebraska, 3-0, at the AVCA Showcase. U-M used a 3-1 win at No. 3 Stanford during the NCAA Tournament to advance to the regional final. In between, Michigan notched victories over No. 22 Kansas State (3-1) and No. 12 Minnesota (3-0). Three Straight The Wolverines have made three consecutive NCAA Sweet 16 appearances, including advancing to a regional final for the first time in school history in U-M is one of eight schools to make the past three Sweet 16s, joining Penn State, Florida, California, Stanford, Texas, Nebraska and Iowa State as teams to advance to the round of 16 since Three Straight Part Two U-M has finished each of the past three season ranked in the top 25 in the season-ending poll. After a 24-9 campaign in 2007, the Wolverines were slotted as the No. 19 team to end the year. Following a 26-9 season in 2008, U-M was ranked No. 17 at the completion of the season. The Wolverines garnered their highest end of season ranking in 2009, finishing as the No. 9-ranked team in the country after advancing to the regional final.
