There the Illini face Dayton (11 a.m. CT, Friday), host Tennessee (6 p.m. CT Friday) and Gardner-Webb (9:30 a.m. CT Sunday). The match last season, which took place in the first weekend of the season,m saw the Illini had two match points in the fourth set, before the Flyers scored the Final four points to claim the set. Dayton was the last Division I to lose a match last season. This will be the fifth meeting between Illinois and Tennessee and the first since The series is tied at 2-2. Gardner Webb and the Illini will meet for the first time. Illinois moves up two spots Illinois moved up two spots to No. 17 in this week s CBS Sports Network/AVCA Coaches rankings. The Illini entered the rankings on Sept. 1, checking in at no. 19. That marked the first time in four seasons that Illinois has been in the rankings. Illinois received votes in the pre-season poll. Six Big Ten teams are in the rankings this week -- no. 1 Penn State, no. 11 Minnesota, no. 14 Wisconsin, no. 15 Purdue, no. 17 Illinois and no. 25 Michigan. Two Illinois non-conference opponents are in the rankings as well -- no. 7 Stanford and no. 12 Oregon, while Saint Louis and New Mexico State are receiving votes. That gives Illinois 12 matches vs. ranked opponents this season and two against teams receiving votes out of the 31 total on the year. Block I Party One of the biggest reasons for Illinois early-season success has been its huge improvement in the block. The NCAA Rankings, which were released for the first time this year, confirm the turnaround. The Illini are ranked 14th nationally with 2.91 blocks per set. Individually, sophomore Johannah Bangert is 15th at 1.5 per set, while sophomore Abby Nelson is 28th at 1.41 blocks per set. The duo is second and sixth, respectively in the Big Ten. To put the block surge in perspective, last season Illinois ranked 10th in the Big Ten last year at 2.23 blocks per, keeping in mind that ast year the teams played to 30 instead of 25. DeBruler, Edinger also in national rankings Sophomore Laura DeBruler led all freshmen nationally, while ranking 22nd overall in kills per set in She continues that prowess this season, ranking ninth nationally at 4.59 kills per set. The assists were pretty evenly distributed in the first two weekends -- Haen with 132 and Bazzetta with 107. The victory over Oregon was especially significant. The Ducks dominated Illinois in the first two sets, winning 25-14, 15-26, Illinois rallied from way down to win the last three sets 26-24, 25-21, The Illini were down 16-9 and in the fourth set. 4 DeBruler earns national, conference Player of the Week honors Laura DeBruler was at the heart of the Illini comeback with 22 kills in the final three sets en route to a match-high 31, which also ties a career high. The honors rolled in all week for DeBruler who not only earned her third Big Ten Player of the Week honor in her young career, but also was named AVCA and CVU.com National Player of the Week. DeBruler becomes the first Illinois player to earn the award since Jessica Belter on Oct. 20, DeBruler averaged 5.4 kills per set to lead Illinois to the tournament s title. The sophomore recorded a double-double in each match with 14 kills and 15 digs against the Tar Heels, 20 kills and 11 digs vs. the Aggies and 31 kills and 12 saves against the Ducks. Against Oregon, DeBruler led the Illini back from a two-set deficit, putting down 22 of her 31 kills in the final three stanzas. In set 4, she recorded nine kills, including six of the final nine Illinois points to key the rally that saw the Illini score 11 of the final 13 points in the set. On the weekend DeBruler totaled 65 kills on a.302 hitting percentage with 38 total digs (3.2 dps) and 11 total blocks (0.9 dps). Welcome to the line-up Sophomores Nicole Kump and Abby Nelson saw limited action in their first season with Illinois in The duo has played prominent roles in leading the Illini to a 5-1 start. Nelson ranks 28th in the nation in blocks per set (1.41). Nelson had eight kills and five blocks while hitting.667 in the victory over New Mexico State, all career highs. She topped that with eight blocks vs. Saint Louis. Nelson also hit.333 at the Billiken Invitational. Kump, meanwhile, is sharing time on the right side with senior Kayani Turner and freshman Michelle Bartsch. She has six kills and nine blocks in the first two weekends of the season. Turner makes miraculous comeback Speaking of Turner, the fact that the fifth-year senior is in the line-up is a true miracle. A knee injury kept Turner out of action during her freshman campaign, then she missed the final six matches in 2005 with a stress fracture. It was out of that injury that Turner developed a condition called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, which essentially sends the same pain signal through the nerves as if the fracture still existed. The condition first surfaced during the spring of 2006, but she felt fine to start the fall season and was named MVP of two tournaments. Turner ranked 15th nationally in kills per game through Oct. 15, but the pain was too much toward the end of the year that she saw limited to no time from there on out. During one weekend in October, it was determined that Turner would only play in one of the two matches that weekend. She had 19 kills and hit.459 in an upset of no. 16 Ohio State. Turner missed all of the 2007 season and it appeared her career might be over. Determined not to have any regrets, Turner decided to give it one last shot and she played well Illinois overseas trip and joins freshman Michelle Bartsch and sophomore Nicole Kump in the rotation at the right side this season. Illinois completes successful European Trip Illinois traveled to Italy, Slovenia and Croatia during the last two weekends in May. The Illini went 9-1, including the Big Ten Conference s first victory over the Italian Junior National Team. The last two times Illinois has taken a foreign trip to Holland and 2003 to Brazil, the Illini reached the NCAA Sweet 16 Several Illinois players collected hardware during the trip. Sophomore Laura DeBruler won Tournament MVP in Belluno, Italy, where the Illini swept Team Belluno, 25-18, 26-24, and Team Sbico 25-23, 25-17, Junior Ashley Edinger earned the award for Best Defensive Player of the Tournament while senior Lizzie Bazzetta was named Best Setter. Illinois won all three matches at a tournament in Rogla, Slovenia, with Johannah Bangert earning Tournament MVP. Illinois fared better than any Big Ten team in recent years against the Italian Junior National Team. Illinois won the first match on May , 23-25, 25-19, 27-29, 15-12, in Ravenna, then lost a hard-fought five-gamer the next night 25-21, 12-25, 18-25, 25-19, HONOR ROLL BIG TEN/NATIONAL HONORS Pre All-Big Ten: Laura DeBruler Big Ten Player of the Week: Laura DeBruler (9/1) AVCA National Player of the Week: Laura DeBruler (9/2) CVU.com National Player of the Week: Laura DeBruler (9/2) ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM HONOREES State Farm Illini Classic: Laura DeBruler (MVP), Ashley Edinger, Kylie McCulley Billiken Invitational: Johannah Bangert, Laura DeBruler Bartsch starts for U.S. Junior National Team Illinois freshman Michelle Bartsch not only made the 12-member U.S. Junior National Team this year, but started every match at middle blocker in the NORCECA Championships in Mexico, leading the United States to the gold medal. 14 MATCH 1 Illinois 3, North Carolina 0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-12) Aug. 29, 2008 Huff Hall Champaign, Ill. State Farm Illini Classic With a fired up student crowd, including members of the U of I basketball team, pushing every point, the Illini opened the season with a 25-21, 25-14, victory over highly regarded North Carolina in the opening night of the 25th Annual State Farm Illini Classic. Illinois provided almost workmanlike effort in dismantling the Tar Heels in just an hour and 26 minutes. At the center of that efficiency was sophomore Laura DeBruler, the NCAA freshman leader in kills a year ago. DeBruler was determined to not only provide the number of kills, but do so by hitting a higher percentage this season. The left side dynamo made just one hitting error in her 29 swings, providing a team-high 14 kills in hitting.448. The defense was as much of the story as the offense on the night. Using a 6-2 with setters Hillary Haen (17 assists) and Lizzie Bazzetta (15 assists) not only provided three hitters in the front row at all times, but also a pretty formidable right side block. As a result, North Carolina hit just.017 for the night. Freshman Michelle Bartsch, along with both senior Kayani Turner and freshman Nicole Kump, provided a formidable wall against UNC's left side. Offensively, Bartsch was hitting with great precision as well with nine kills and no errors in 18 swings for a.500 percentage. Illinois had seven team blocks, paced by sophomore Abby Nelson, DeBruler and sophomore Johannah Bangert, who had three individual blocks apiece. Libero Ashley Edinger had 19 digs and DeBruler began the season with a double-double following a 15-dig output. Illinois GP K-E-TA Pct. State Farm Illini Classic After taking out No. 23 New Mexico State in four sets during the morning (24-26, 25-21, 25-19, 25-14), the Illini faced the tall task of defeating a seasoned no. 11 Oregon squad, coming off a Sweet 16 appearance, in what turned out to be the title match of the State Farm Illini Classic Saturday night. The evening victory somewhat overshadowed the morning win over 23rd-ranked New Mexico State, a 26-6 team from a year ago. After narrowly dropping the first set, Illinois dominated the last three. DeBruler had 20 kills, giving her 51 kills in 120 swings for the day. The middles provided offensive firepower paced by a career-best eight kills and a.667 attack percentage from Nelson and seven kills and a.429 clip from Bangert. After Oregon put on a clinic in sets one and two, the Illini rallied from way down to stun the Ducks, 14-25, 16-25, 26-24, 25-21, to win their 18th title in the 25 years of the event. To put the stunner in perspective, Oregon tallied 8.5 blocks and hit.462 and.444, respectively, in the first two sets, while the Illini tallied no blocks and hit just.072 combined. Tournament MVP Laura DeBruler set fire as well with 22 of her match-high 31 kills in the final three sets. For the weekend, DeBruler had 65 kills, an average of 5.42 per set, and hit.302. Illinois also adjusted its blocks and the back row defense refused to be penetrated. All-Tournament member Ashley Edinger had 20 digs and the Illini beat Oregon at its own game by out-blocking the Ducks in the final three sets. Illinois GP K-E-TA Pct.
