WHAT YOU MAY HAVE MISSED PERFECT BIG TEN START IS RARE U-M s 3-0 start in Big Ten play was a first under head coach Mark Rosen. The last Michigan team to accomplish the feat was the 1997 squad that finished 13-7 and tied for third in the final conference standings under former head coach Greg Giovanazzi. DONHOFF LAUDED FOR DEFENSIVE EFFORTS Sophomore libero Sloane Donhoff was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Monday (Sept. 28) after posting a career-high 25 digs in the victory over Purdue (Sept. 27). It marks the first career weekly accolade for Donhoff, who dug more attacks than any other player in the conference over the weekend, averaging 4.4 digs per set and converting on 35-of-36 reception opportunities while anchoring the Wolverine defense that held opponents to a sub-.200 attack percentage. NON-CONFERENCE WIN STREAK ENDS U-M s saw its 52-match winning streak against non-conference opponents in the regular season come to a close with its loss to Oregon State (Sept. 19). TOURNAMENT WIN STREAK SNAPPED With a runner-up finish at the Michigan/adidas Invitational, Michigan snapped its streak of 18 straight tournaments and invitationals won in the regular season, dating back to the 2005 Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga. HUNT SETS NEW STANDARD AT THE STRIPE Sophomore Alex Hunt set a new U-M single-match record with nine aces versus Marquette (Sept. 11). Hunt s nine aces eclipsed the previous best of eight set by Katie Bruzdzinski (Sept. 17, 2004 vs. Virginia Tech) and Juliana Paz (Sept. 12 vs. VCU). ZIMMERMAN RECORDS FIRST CAREER TRIPLE-DOUBLE Lexi Zimmerman s triple-double (11 kills, 17 digs, 42 assists) versus Tennessee (Sept. 4) is the first by a Wolverine since Nov. 12, 2004, when Lisa Gamalski had 11 kills, 27 digs and 48 assists against No. 5 Minnesota. Michigan has never had a kills-digs-blocks triple-double. CAN YOU DIG IT? With 23 digs from Sloane Donhoff and 21 from Megan Bower versus Xavier (Sept. 5), Michigan had two players with 20 or more digs in a match for the first time since Oct. 19, 2007, when Stesha Selsky (29) and Kerry Hance (20) turned the trick against Indiana. ROOD MAKES SWITCH TO THE MIDDLE Senior Veronica Rood, who has started 20 matches over the last two seasons as an outside hitter, is making the transition to the middle for her final campaign. A LOOK BACK AT 2008 WOLVERINES SWEET FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR Michigan s comeback win over 13th-seed Saint Louis in NCAA second-round action last season propelled the squad to its second straight Sweet 16 appearance. The Wolverines accomplished the feat for the first time in program history in 2007, winning a pair of games at home. WOLVERINES POST ROSEN-BEST RECORD Michigan s 2008 NCAA Tournament win over Saint Louis marked the team s 26th win of the year -- the most program victories under head coach Mark Rosen. Rosen led U-M to 24 wins in 2007 with two of the victories coming in postseason play. The 26 triumphs are the most since 1981 when U-M picked up a Michigan-record 41 victories. SECOND-BEST U-M BIG TEN FINISH Michigan s fifth-place Big Ten finish in 2008 ties for the second-best in Maize and Blue history. Michigan had a share of third place in 1997 and won the Big Ten title in ZIMMERMAN BACK TO RUN THE OFFENSE Michigan junior setter Lexi Zimmerman returns to pilot the Wolverines offense in 2009 after earning first team All-Big Ten honors in unanimous fashion a year ago as well as second team All-America accolades. Zimmerman already holds the U-M single-season assists mark (1,685 in 2007) and ranks fourth all-time in helpers (3,095) after just two seasons. TRIO TO CAPTAIN THE MAIZE & BLUE A trio of captains will be used by head coach Mark Rosen for the 2009 season with senior Megan Bower, junior Lexi Zimmerman and sophomore Sloane Donhoff earning the nod. All three were captains last season.
