LA Tech (5-5) enters the tournament with a.500 record and holds an all-time winning record over two of the opponents it will face this weekend. The Lady Techsters have faced off with Ole Miss seven times in the program s history with LA Tech winning four of those meetings. Tech also holds an advantage over Jackson State, 5-1, including a straight-set victory earlier this season. COELHO IS HERE TO HELP Three-year letterwinner Coelho is the lone returner at the setter position for LA Tech after totaling almost 1,800 assists in the last two seasons. The Brazilian also poses a threat from the service line as the senior led the team last season with 42 aces (0.39/set), as well as tying a program record with eight aces in a match versus New Orleans early in Adria Morales, a transfer from Lee College, is also expected to step in and make an immediate impact in improving offensive efficiency and defense for the Lady Techsters. Morales averaged 8.59 assists per set for the Lady Rebels last season. CAN YOU DIG IT? RIGHT ON! Sophomore libero Alejandra Aviles returns in 2014 for her sophomore year after leading the Lady Techsters last season with 360 digs (3.71/set). Aviles was also an asset from the service line for the team after totaling 16 aces in 97 sets in her first season at the collegiate level. KILLER QUEENS In 2014, Dalane Guidry and Rebecca Redgen return to the Lady Techsters as the two players with the most match experience. With the addition of junior college transfer Helena Gunnarsdóttir, as well as freshmen Emilee Dechant and Danielle Bristow, the Lady Techsters will be looking for more efficiency in the offensive system. Rebecca Redgen, who totaled 291 kills last season (2.75/ set), returns as LA Tech s leading attacker after ranking second on the team last season. Twoyear letterwinner Dalane Guidry is also back for her junior season, as the 6-foot-3-inch middle hitter was third on the team in 2013 with 143 kills and second with 63 total blocks. THE (NOT SO) NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK As a three-year starter, Dalane Guidry returns in 2014 after totaling 63 blocks and an average of 0.68 blocks per set last season, which was second best among her teammates. Additionally, Guidry s teammate, senior Maria Coelho, was third on the squad after recording 54 total blocks last season (4 solo, 40 assisted) with an average of 0.50 per set. ACES ACROSS THE BOARD After an eight-ace performance on Sept. 7, 2013 versus New Orleans, Maria Coelho moved into a tie for first place all-time in LA Tech Volleyball history for most aces in a single-match. Coelho led the 2013 team with 42 aces. The three-day event will take place inside Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg, Miss. This year s championship will feature the league s top eight teams, a decrease from the 12 participants a year ago, with the top four seeds earning a bye into Thursday s quarterfinal matches. The championship match will be televised live on CBS Sports and the tournament winner receives the league s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. WESTERN KENTUCKY JOINS THE CLUB On July 1, 2014, Conference USA proudly welcomed Western Kentucky University to its membership as the Hilltoppers officially joined the now 14-team league. As a first-year member of C-USA, WKU was selected second in the preseason volleyball poll, placing three student-athletes on the preseason all-conference team, including preseason Player of the Year Noelle Langenkamp. The Hilltoppers won the 2013 Sun Belt regular season at 17-1 and finished 27-6 overall. UTSA SET TO DEFEND TITLE Following C-USA regular season and C-USA tournament titles during its inaugural season in the league, UTSA made its third appearance in the NCAA tournament, facing Texas A&M in The Roadrunners only lost one league match en route to their titles, and the squad has been tabbed to repeat in the C-USA Volleyball Preseason Poll, where it collected 161 points in votes as selected by the league s 13 head coaches.
