4 BREVARD S LAST GAME ANDERSON S LAST GAME THE LAST MEETING Wingate 70, Brevard 58 February, 06 WINGATE, N.C. Brevard College s women s basketball team concluded its rigorous stretch of nine games in 9 days on Saturday at Wingate, falling to the host Bulldogs With the loss, BC drops to - overall and 0-8 in South Atlantic Conference play. In the contest, sophomore Whitney DeMoss grabbed 0 rebounds to extend her streak of contests with double-digit rebounds to six. She currently has 48 rebounds this season, which ranks fourth in Brevard s NCAA-Era for most in one season. Her 8. rebounds per game is on pace to set the record for highest average since Brevard joined the NCAA ranks in 008. The game opened up with back-to-back jumpers from Wingate (4-8, -7 SAC), followed by a triple from Hadara Bannister and a made free throw by Madison Lenox to knot it up at 4 all. The Bulldogs retook the lead on a fast break layup two plays later, and extended the advantage to five at -6. Brevard brought it back to within three after a steal by Katie Williams led to a fast break layup by Lenox, and made it a one-point game in the final minute of the first off a pair of free throws from Kelsie Rhyne. Wingate scored with five seconds remaining to lead -0. Bannister was able to make it a one-possession game on Brevard s first trip down the court with a triple, but the hosts countered with a 0-0 spree to go up 5-. Lenox ended Wingate s run with a jumper, followed by a three-pointer from Williams to bring the gap to within single digits at 5-8. Wingate scored the final 4 points of the frame to lead 9-8 at the intermission. Shelby Wolfe came out of the break and scored the opening four points of the third period, and six of the first nine, to make it 4-4. Lenox and DeMoss chipped in to the comeback attempt with a triple and jumper to give Brevard points in the first four minutes of the frame and made it 4-9. The Tornados rally ended with a triple from Lynsey Crisp that made it a point game at 44-, before a four-point spree from Wingate extended the lead back to 6. Brevard was able to bring the deficit to once again late in the contest, after an - run over three and a half minutes made it Wingate added a pair of late baskets to again make the lead 6, but the Tornados ended the contest with the final two baskets. Lenox led the team with points and matched her career-high for assists with six. Bannister and Wolfe also ended the contest with double-digit points, with both having 0. Wolfe posted a career-high in assists with six while Bannister had two, four steals and a block. As a unit, the royal blue and white recorded 6 assists, the second-most this season and fourth-straight contest that the team finished in double-digits. Brevard s defense held Wingate to just one made three-point basket, the second-straight contest that the Tornados have only allowed one three-point basket by the opposition. No. 7 Anderson 89, Catawba 84 February, 06 ANDERSON, S.C.. -- Anderson junior guard Nakia Young scored six of her career-high 6 points and senior forward Jennifer Monroe chipped in four points in the final :09, as 7th-ranked Anderson outlasted Catawba, 89-84, in South Atlantic Conference women s basketball action, Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center. I am really proud of our effort and execution we showed the entire game, said Anderson head coach Jimmy Garrity. This was a great win against a very good and hot Catawba basketball team. Anderson improved to 7-4 overall and 5- in the conference with its fifth win in six outings and swept the season series with Catawba, which fell to - overall and 0-8 in the SAC. With the victory, the Trojans maintained their three-game lead in the league standings. In addition to her career night in the scoring column, Young tallied four assists and shared gamehigh rebounding honors with six boards. Junior guard Heather Jankowy added 5 points and a game-high seven assists, while Monroe finished with points. Junior forward Alexis Dillard netted points and pulled down five rebounds. The Lady Indians out-rebounded Anderson, 6-, but the Trojans turned Catawba turnovers into 4 points to offset an -point deficit in second-chance points. With the contest knotted 4 times and featuring 4 lead changes, including eight in the second half, the Trojans overcame an early -6 deficit with a 9-4 surge to even the score at 5 apiece on a layup by freshman guard Tamia Eatmon with less than three minutes left in the first quarter. With the two teams still stalemated at 8-8 at the 4: mark of the second quarter, Catawba reeled off five unanswered points to equal its largest lead of the first half. But the Trojans countered with an - outburst to regain a 9-5 advantage before the Lady Indians closed the second quarter with two free throws to set the halftime score at 9-7. Jankowy fueled the outburst with five points, with Young and Katie Davis each chipping in three points apiece. Catawba again pushed out to a five-point lead early in the third quarter, only to see Jankowy drop in eight points as part of a 6-4 outburst, as AU built its largest lead at 60-5, with :5 left in the third quarter. With the Black and Gold clinging to a 67-6 lead early in the fourth quarter, Catawba rallied to take a brief 76-7 edge with less than five minutes remaining and the lead changed hands twice before Young dropped in a layup at the :09 mark to give the Trojans the lead for good, at 79-78, and the Trojans sealed the victory by going 6-of-8 from the line in the final :. Anderson 77, Brevard 69 January 6, 06 ANDERSON, S.C. Brevard College s women s basketball began 06 with its first contest against a nationally ranked opponent of the season, falling to No. 5 Anderson despite leading heading at the half. With the loss Brevard drops to -9 overall and 0-6 in South Atlantic Conference play. In the contest Madison Lenox became just the fourth player to eclipse 900 career points since Brevard joined the NCAA ranks in 008. The junior from Raleigh, N.C. became the second-fastest Tornado to reach the number, as Samantha Winn was the only player to reach it faster. Lenox also moved into fifth in the NCAA-era record book for career points, now sitting at 90. Offensively, she also sits in the top five of scoring average with 4.5, second in the NCAA-era, and field goals made with, fourth. Lenox kept BC in the contest in the opening stanza, scoring the royal blue and white s first three baskets to tie Holli Flippo for fifth in the NCAA-era record book for career scoring. Anderson (8-, 6-0 SAC) ended the frame with a 5- rally to recreate its largest lead of the period at six, 6-0. Brevard went on its longest run of the night midway through the second period, scoring -consecutive points to turn an point deficit into a three point lead. Katie Williams opened up the rally with a triple to bring the gap back to within single digits at 4-6, followed by a three-point play from Shelby Wolfe to trim the separation to five. Williams contributed another point, coming off a free throw after a Trojan technical four, allowing Hadara Bannister to knot up the score with four-straight points from the senior. Lenox capped off the spurt with a three pointer to give the Tornados its first lead of the frame. Brevard led by as many as nine, but went into halftime with a 6-9 lead. Anderson muscled its way back into the contest in the third stanza, capitalizing on 0 points in the paint to tie it up at 48 all before a triple in the final minute of the period put the host up Lenox ended the frame with a layup in the final second to make it a one point affair heading into the final 0 minutes at Both sides scored three points in its opening possession of the final period to keep it a one point game, but an 8-0 run from the Trojans put the host up nine with 6:59 remaining and the Tornados were unable to bring it within five for the remainder of the contest.
