4 BREVARD S LAST GAME QUEEN S LAST GAME THE LAST MEETING BREVARD 80, MARS HILL 6 February 4, 05 BREVARD, N.C. The Brevard College women s basketball team used an 8- second-half run and a stifling defensive effort centered on the nation s second-leading scorer to dispatch of Mars Hill 80-6 on Wednesday night and move within a game of a conference tournament bid. With 0:0 remaining in the game, Camille Glymph, who entered the game as the second-leading scorer in Division II at.7 points per contest, sank one of two free throws to pull Mars Hill (7-, 5-0 SAC) within two points at The Lions would score just points the rest of the way with Brevard (5-, 4-) notching 6 points over the final 0 minutes. Katie Williams got the run going with a three-point field goal before Hadara Bannister added another 90 seconds later to make the score The Lions drew within six points on a Genice Lane bucket in the lane, but the Tornados exploded to score the next points, with eight coming from Williams. One game after setting Brevard s single-game scoring record with 5 points in a win over Lenoir-Rhyne, Williams led all scorers with 4 points and headlined a group of three Tornados in double figures. She outdueled Glymph, who connected on eight of her 9 field goal tries and was -for-9 from beyond the arc. Williams missed just four of her field goal opportunities and was perfect in eight attempts from the free throw line. Madison Lenox chipped in 7 points and a team-high rebounds to go along with four assists and two steals. Bannister joined the pair in double figures with 0 points and collected three steals. Lenox was 8-for-0 from the charity stripe, with she and Williams combining for a 6-for-8 mark at the line. As a team, the Tornados knocked down 8.9 percent of their free throws, their third-highest percentage at the line this season. The Tornados also had several key contributions from players off the bench. Kelsie Rhyne knocked down all three of her three-point field goals in a span of two and a half minutes in the first half to help the Tornados claw back from a deep early deficit. Ariadna Simon had four points and two rebounds, but made several hustle plays that don t show up in the box score. She also totaled two assists, two steals, and blocked a career-high three shots. The Lions appeared poised to run away with the game in its early going. Mars Hill raced out to a 0- lead less than four minutes into the game and had nine points from Glymph at the 9:5 mark of the first half. But the Tornados effectively shut her down the rest of the way, with Glymph going -for- from the field and scoring just seven points in the second half. With its win, the Tornados sit in sole possession of th place in the South Atlantic Conference standings. Brevard passed Queens, the Tornados next opponent, after the Royals managed just points in a 7-point loss to Catawba Wednesday night. The Tornados are now just one game behind Coker, Mars Hill, Lenoir-Rhyne, and Tusculum, who sit in a four-way tie for seventh place at 5-0 in league play. CATAWBA 59, QUEENS January, 05 CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Queens University of Charlotte women s basketball team (5-5, - SAC) team fell 59- to Catawba College (-8, 9-6 SAC) on February 4, 05. Lacey Singletary led the floor in scoring, taking the first triple-double of the year for the team, finishing tonight s game with 4 points, blocks, and rebounds. In addition to her triple-double, Singletary flew past several career highs and school records during the game. Her triple-double for the night places her upon the national stage as the tenth Division II female player to accomplish this feat this season and the only player from the South Atlantic Conference to do so. Singletary surpassed her single game record for blocks, previously set at seven against Lincoln Memorial on January 5, in which she tied Kristy Jolly for the school record set in 996. In addition to currently ranking th nationally in blocks per game, Singletary improved her overall season average, extending to.0 per game. She now holds 6 total blocks for the year bringing the total to 40 during her career and ranking third in career highs at Queens. With rebounds, she also tied a personal career high for the category. Queens would struggle early in the game to find their confidence on the floor, while Catawba put up a tough offensive game with an early 7- run. With the absence of Head Coach Susan Yow, the Royals would only successfully make 4 of 54 shots, giving them a 5.9 average. In addition, they would make none from the outside the three-point line. Queens did have a strong defensive presence forcing 9 total turnovers on the Indians with of them coming in the first half. However, Catawba would win the turnover battle finding 4 Queens mishaps in the game with Jada Huntley responsible for pressuring four steals. Although the team had a slow start, Queens battled to overcome a 7- score forcing the game to swing in their favor. Grabbing a three point led from Abby Pettit, the Royals saw their last hold of the game fall away at the :09 mark. A 4- run put the Indians in a double-digit lead with time ticking closer to half. Carmen Richardson and Pettit each took a basket before the half expired with the Royals trailing 4-0. It would be seven minutes before the Royals found their first basket in the second half, with Singletary grabbing a rebound to return it for two points. Although the run was halted, Queens was unable to connect on offense as they searched for answers to minimize the point game. Singletary would find the basket three more times to lead the game under the seven minute mark, but it would be another dry spell to follow. McKell Oliverio grabbed the last basket from the floor before Singletary topped it off with two free-throws but the game was out of reach as Catawba took home the win. BREVARD 58, QUEENS 48 December, 04 CHARLOTTE, N.C. The Brevard College women s basketball team earned its first win of the season with a victory over South Atlantic Conference (SAC) foe, Queens, on Saturday afternoon in Curry Arena. The Tornados (-6, -4 SAC) were led by sophomore Chelsea Turner who had 7 points and three rebounds while matching her career-best in three-pointers made in a game with five. Classmate Madison Lenox had points, six rebounds, and three assists from the bench. Junior Shelby Wolfe had eight points and a team-best eight rebounds. Senior Taylor Hiatt and junior Katie Williams each had seven points while Williams had four rebounds and Hiatt had two steals. Junior Hadara Bannister had two points but had three steals and four assists. The Tornados struggled in the first half by just shooting 5 percent from the field but then was -for from the field in the second half and good for improved 47.8 percent from the field and.9 percent for the game. They also shot 40.9 percent from beyond the arc going nine-for- in the game and five-for-eight in the second half. McKell Oliverio led the Royals (-7, 0-5 SAC) in scoring with 4 points and also had three rebounds while Lacey Singletary had points, eight rebounds and six blocks. Abby Pettit had eight points and seven boards while Carmen Richardson and Karleasha Thompson each had six points. The teams traded baskets in the opening 0 minutes and were tied at with 8: remaining before Williams drained a three-point attempt to break up the tie. Queens answered with a jumper by Richardson but Nicole Graham responded with a three-pointer of her own for an 8-4 Tornados lead. Brevard close out the half on a 5- run in the final :47 of play for a 5-8 halftime lead. The Tornados opened the second half continuing where they left off with a 7-0 run in the opening :0 to extend the lead to 4. Brevard went up 40- when Bannister stole the ball and converted a fastbreak layup. Brevard s biggest lead came with :48 left in the game with a 45-5 advantage. Nicole Graham stole the ball and Williams missed a lay-up before the ball was knocked out of bounds by Queens. The Tornados took advantage of the second opportunity and Graham knocked down a threepointer. The game continued with the trend of back-and-forth but Queens was still down by as many as 8 with 7:55 remaining as the score was 50- Tornados. That s when the hosts went on a run of their own coming within points with :7 left on a 0- run and then six with : left. Brevard held off the late comeback with key turnovers and making their free-throws down the stretch to hold on for the win. The Tornados had 0 points off turnovers, including 9 in the second half and had a 6-0 edge on second chance points. They also had a 7-9 advantage on points from the bench and a slim 7-6 rebound edge but had 0 offensive rebounds compared to the Royals.
