11 UNION UNIVERSITY Season Outlook / Summary 2005 Season Outlook Union University Volleyball looks to rebuild this season as they lost five seniors and two key underclassmen from the recorded breaking season of Entering its eighth season of varsity competition, the Lady Bulldogs will look to new head coach, Steven Gream, as he becomes only the second coach in the short history of the Union volleyball program. His familiarity with the program and his experience on past Union championship teams should prove valuable as he builds to continue the winning tradition at Union. Union will look to the only two returning players, Lindsay Holmes and Purity Ogolla, to provide an understanding of what it means to be a part of a winning program. To assist them with those efforts, Union has signed three transfers from California, and has also added the Jackson Sun Player of the Year, Amanda Hutchison from Trinity Christian Academy here in Jackson. While the 2005 Volleyball team has no seniors, five juniors make up the largest class on the 2005 roster. Returning players Holmes and Ogolla join with transfers Monica Schirmer, Edith Mendoza, and Elena Villagomez. This group has plenty of playing time and experience that will be valuable to this team. Holmes will continue to hold down the defensive specialist position with Ogolla starting the year at the setter position. Schirmer and Villagomez will play at the outside hitter position, while Mendoza will play the middle hitter position. Sophomores Lindsey Wallach and Katie Kulow will add energy and determination to the Lady Bulldogs. Wallach will play both the defensive specialist and libero positions. Kulow will be a defensive specialist, while also helping Ogolla at the setter position. Hutchison and Sharon Green come in as the lone freshmen on the team, but bring exciting play to the court. Hutchison will start as a freshman playing both the middle and outside hitter positions. This year s team represents four states (California, Texas, Missouri and Tennessee) and two countries (United States and Kenya). With the addition of all the incoming talent, Union looks to continue having a competitive team each time they step onto the court. The Lady Bulldogs are rebuilding, however Coach Gream has a confident outlook for the 2005 season, stating that these girls can flat out play Season Summary Looking back at the 2004 season of the Union University Lady Bulldog volleyball team, many firsts stand out. With the outstanding leadership of their seniors, the Lady Bulldogs once again posted an impressive overall record of 31-5 and were undefeated in the TranSouth Conference with a record of In addition to winning the regular season title, Union swept through the conference tournament to capture the tournament championship. And in their seventh trip to the NAIA Region XI Tournament, this year they came out on top. With the Region XI Tournament Championship, Union earned their first ever bid to the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament. National Rankings were another thing that these Lady Bulldogs achieved. When the season began the Union Bulldogs were ranked No. 17. One of the many high points during the regular season was a stretch of 11 staight victories, including win over region foe and national power Georgetown College. During that stretch, Union reached the No. 11 spot in the polls, their highest national ranking in the short seven-year history of the program. Union finished the season with a 2-2 record in pool play in the national tournament and finished the season ranked No. 14 nationally. Once again, Union Volleyball achieved numerous individual awards. Coach Brian Dunn was named the TranSouth Coach of the Year as well as the NAIA Region XI Coach of the Year. Also after the NAIA National Tournament, the American Volleyball Coaches Association tabbed Coach Dunn as the Region XI Coach of the Year. Gladys Wandera also received many honors for her play. Wandera finished the season with 750 kills, 76 service aces, and 161 blocks. The numerous honors she received were being named the TranSouth Conference Player of the Year, Region XI Player of the Year, first team All-Conference, first team All-Region, as well as being named to the AVCA All-American first team. Wandera was named the TranSouth Player of the Week five times, the NAIA Region XI Player of the Week four times, and the NAIA National Player of the Week once. Phylis Anyango also received many honors. Anyango finished the season with 531 kills and 97 total blocks. She was named to the first team All-Conference and All-Region as well as being named an honorable mention All-American performer. Tedy Georgieva was also named to the first team all-conference. Nicole Garber also had a great season. She was named to the first team All-Conference and was the TranSouth Setter of the Week seven times and the NAIA Region Setter of the Week twice. Allison Shein was also named to the first team All-Conference and was named the TranSouth Libero of the Week six times and NAIA Region XI Libero of the Week three times. With all of these awards, Union Volleyball swept the TranSouth weekly honors four times throughout this historic season. This season was full of firsts and will be remembered as a very historic season. The Union University Lady Bulldog volleyball program looks to use the momentum gained from the 2004 season as a starting point for many great years to come. 13 UNION UNIVERSITY NAIA & Opponent Info. NAIA - National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to strengthen academic eligibility requirements. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a certain grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis. The NAIA includes more than 60,000 participating student-athletes. The NAIA offers 24 separate championships in 13 sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling. Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities. The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative which emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities. Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity. Champions of Character is a program of the NAIA designed to promote character development in youth and change the culture of sport. The NAIA developed the Champions of Character program in response to the growing problem of deteriorating standards of integrity in sports and society. At a time when all of sport has experienced increasingly abhorrent behavior by athletes, coaches, fans and parents, NAIA Champions of Character raises the standards for positive youth development in athletics and academics. The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. Now our core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions of Character program. The NAIA sees a tremendous need to supplement character development in younger students from the elementary through high school level. Lessons on character and integrity through sports are a natural extension of classroom learning. Union University Volleyball Media Guide - 13
