NAIA Champions of Character A Character Development Initiative Mission Statement The NAIA Champions of Character initiative will create an environment in which every NAIA student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship. Vision Statement When researching the NAIA s place in the history of sport and higher education, several consistencies are apparent, including its dedication to academic achievement along with athletic excellence. Also apparent is the organization s role as a trailblazer in providing equal opportunities for all student-athletes. Above all, there is an expectation of ethical behavior and a commitment to scholarship, sportsmanship and leadership. Throughout its history, the NAIA and its members have used sport informally as a vehicle for character development. Because the athletic arena has become a microcosm of society, the time has come to bring a more formal emphasis to character development on every level and especially in sport. The NAIA Champions of Character initiative, through awareness, education and community involvement, will continue to develop an atmosphere of integrity in sport. Character and cooperation will grace our youth as they compete in athletics and life. Objectives To develop a comprehensive NAIA Champions of Character program. To encourage all NAIA institutions to champion character development in all sports programs. To establish character development expectations for NAIA student-athletes, coaches, administrators and spectators involved in intercollegiate athletics. To develop standards of accountability for all NAIA student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and spectators so that all will take responsibility for their actions. To implement a program of assessment and accountability of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative at all NAIA institutions. To initiate a community outreach program with a character development emphasis. To develop community service outreach opportunities at NAIA championship sites. To establish a Character Center that will bring national attention to effect character traits, educate people on character principles and develop initiatives for character education. 13

14 2003 Season Review...Union University soccer completed one of the most successfull seasons in the short six year history of the program. The Bulldogs finished the season with a overall record including the NCCAA National Championship. The Bulldogs closed out the season at the NCCAA National Tournament with an impressive three straight shutouts, 1-0 over The Maters College (Calif.), 1-0 over Cedarville University (Ohio), and 2-0 over Southern Wesleyan University (S.C.). Those three shutouts were a part of a Union record 10 shutouts during the 2003 season. That record was just one of many set by the 2003 squad. In fact, of the 41 Union historical records, the 2003 squad set or finished second in 18 of those categories. Included in the records set by last season s team were, fewest goals allowed (25), opponent shooting percentage (17%), and highest shooting percentage as a team (25%). Also on the season, Union was shutout a record low two times. Union started the 2003 season by posted an record in their first 10 games. In those first 10 games, Union rolled off a six-game winning streak in which they earned four shutouts. Twice during the season, Union s defense posted three consecutive shutouts. Union also earned votes in the NAIA national polls for the first time since the 1999 season. Several honors were earned by the 2003 Bulldog soccer squad. Sophomore goalkeeper, Robert Stinson was named an NAIA All-American, NAIA All-Region, and TranSouth All-Conference. Redzi Stojiljkovic joined Stinson on the All-Conference team. Kekec Zivkovic was named the NCCAA National Tournament MVP.. Kyle McDiarmid and Marko Pavlovic were named to the NCCAA All-Tournament defensive team. Fabio Buarque and Zivkovic were named to the NC- CAA All-Tournament team as midfielders. In the Jackson Cup, Union defeated Lambuth 3-0 in the Fifth Annual Jackson Soccer Cup. The Bulldogs lead the Jackson Cup series 3-2 and have won two straight over the Eagles. The 2003 season was a season in which Union seemed to move a step closer to contending for a conference title and NAIA region berth. Now it s up to the squad of 2004 to continue the process in building this young program into a championship team Season Outlook...The 2004 soccer season for the Union University Bulldogs is one that will be met with great anticipation. Especially following a year in which Union soccer made major strides to move the program to a higher level, including the NCCAA National Championship. This 2004 team expects to be able to build on the successes of last season as Union soccer begins its seventh season of varsity competition. Union s schedule in 2004 is the first object that grabs attention as it is what head coach Dr. Darin White calls, easily our most difficult schedule that we ve ever had. Eleven of the 20 opponents were ranked during the 2003 season in either the NAIA or NCAA polls. Union opens the season on the road at NCAA Div. I opponent Belmont University in Nashville, then follows that up with a home match versus cross-town rival Lambuth University. In the short history of the program, Union has made strides to become a contender in the NAIA, a difficult task as the NAIA Region XI that Union competes has produced six national champions since Also included on the schedule is NAIA preseason No. 10 Mid-Continent and No. 14 Univ. of Mobile. New at Union in 2004 will be a junior varsity soccer program. According to Coach White, this team will serve as a reserve team for the varsity and also allow more players the opportunity to play soccer at the college level. This in turn, hopes to increase the level of play for Union soccer in the coming years. The Bulldogs boast just two seniors this season. Redzi Stojiljkovic and Daniel Lee have both been tremendous players over the past four years for Union. Stojiljkovic led Union in 2003 with nine assists and was third with 15 total points. Lee has been named as one of the two captains for the 2004 season. Union also has just two juniors on this very young team. Robert Stinson and Christopher Anthony both have proven their value by earning starting rolls as freshman. Stinson helped Union to a school record 10 shutouts in 2003, including three in a row twice during the year. Stinson tallied eight of those 10 shutouts. Anthony, a native of Jackson, scored two goals and three assists as a sophomore from the forward position. The sophomore class for the Bulldogs has 10 members with several sophomores coming off very impressive freshman seasons. Brian Hamilton tallied two shutouts of Union s record 10 shutouts as a freshman. Duncan Nicol, Pablo Paredes, and Gareth Munro tallied nine goals and 15 assists combined as freshman last season from the midfield position. Nicol is the second of two team captains for the 2004 season. Also returning from 2003 is Mark Pavlovic, Mark Forrest, and Christopher Prentice who have a combined 52 games played from last season. Brett Martin returns to Union after taking a year off from school last season. He played in19 games for the Bulldogs as a freshman in Marcus Boehler and Humberto Sanchez are returning sophomores who will begin the season as members of the junior varsity team. Union s 2004 freshman class is the biggest of the four classes this year with 11 varsity and nine junior varsity players. Chris Lean is returning to Union after spending last season in his home in Canada. He was a red-shirt player for the Bulldogs in 2002 and will likely receive playing time along with Stinson at the goalkeeper position. Darren Goldie, Benny Grozier, Michael Pugh, Kyle Sanders, Bobby McColl, Diego Rojas, Craig Clark, Scott Sinclair, Colin Bonner, Anthony Coyle, and Nikola Djordjevic make up the remainder of the freshman class that will begin the season as varsity players. Carl Strickland, Andrew Corbett, Clayton Stockett, Austin Bell, Lemual Turner, John Michael Ryall, Brendon Kuhlman, and Andrew Wright finish out the junior varsity club to start the season. Thomas Brown will redshirt this season. This team for Union is very young, but talented. Coach White hopes to lead this team to their first ever TranSouth Conference Championship and be award their first trip to the NAIA Region XI Tournament. 14

Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to strengthen academic eligibility requirements. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a certain grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis. The NAIA includes more than 60,000 participating student-athletes. The NAIA offers 24 separate championships in 13 sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling.
