5 The Editor s Epistle Good afternoon and welcome to Herns Lane, the home of Welwyn Garden City Football Club. Today we extend armest greetings to the players, officials and supporters of Cranfield United for a Spartan South Midlands League fixture. What a night we had here at Herns Lane on Wednesday. An excellent all-round team performance brought about our first home win of the season when we defeated Stony Stratford Town 3-0. Kieran Weekes and Billy Jones the scorers on the night and both opening their Citizens account and I suppose one has to mention that manager Scott O Donoghue was influential with two assists. Let s hope our fine form is continued this afternoon. Our opponents this afternoon have enjoyed mixed fortunes to date with the highlight being their well deserved FA Vase success this week, a result that has secured them a home tie with Premier side Berkhamsted in the next round. Our two meetings last season saw Cranfield United achieve the upper-hand with two victories, so come on lads let s change the outcome this afternoon. Following today s game we face the short trip to Hoddesdon Town on Tuesday evening and games between the two clubs normally result in good entertaining affairs with the promise of goals. Next Saturday we are at home again when Kentish Town are the visitors in what is the first of another three successive home fixtures in the space of eight days. 10 TODAY S MAN IN THE MIDDLE Our match referee this afternoon, Peter Saggars (59), is a retired Police Officer who is a resident of Bushey, Herts. He now works as an Ambulance Driver at Edgware Community Hospital. Played football for Chorleywood Common FC until aged 35 and started refereeing in 1998 serving on the Herts Senior County League and Ryman League. Now referees on the Spartan South Midlands League and Capital Midweek League. Married to Alison and has two children Dan (22) and Laura (24). Since 2001 the club has again been playing in the South Midlands League. The club was awarded Charter Standard Status in 2004 and in 2005/6 the club made its debut in the FA Vase and in 2009/10, its debut in the FA Cup. The 2010/11 season saw the formation of the Cranfield United Ladies Team. 13 TODAY S VISITORS - CRANFIELD UNITED F.C. The club was formed in 1903 and registered with Bedfordshire FA, however due to its then remote location; early activities were restricted to friendlies. The first recorded matches were played in the Bedford and District League shortly after the First World War, but success did not come until the club moved the North Bucks League in After the Second World War the club reformed in 1947 and entered teams in both the Bedford and District & the North Bucks Leagues. After two successful seasons, the club progressed, in 1949 to the South Midlands League where in the 1949/50 season the team won the Division 2 title winning every game and conceding only 8 goals.
