5 ODD SPOTS THE WEIRD AND WACKY SIDE OF SPORT Luca Viali s first match as Chelsea player-manager started with a glass of champagne in the dressing room. I wanted to have a toast to wish good luck to the players he said. Chelsea won. As a schoolboy at Ampleforth, Lawrence Daliaglio was an all round sportsman with sufficient interest in cricket to take jobs as a waiter at Lords and The Oval - before rugby became his main attraction. The Romanian World Cup team were presented with a magic potion made with holy water, basil, olive oil and honey. Put it on your faces and make the sign of the cross three times they were told, and anoint the goal net too to stop the opposition scoring. Three Barnsley MPs took out an early-day motion in Parliament in February 1998, criticising the failure of the referee to give Barnsley a penalty in their midweek match with Manchester United, bringing their FA Cup dreams to an end. South African cricket umpire Cyril Mitchley was a professional footballer with Sheffield United for a year. Cricket fan and former manager dave Bassett sent Cyril one of his proudest possessions - a Blades club tie. Football fans at Sunderland s Stadium of Light have been entertained to some pre-match culture including dancers performing Prokofiev s Dance of the Knights, Durham School Choir, an orchestra and excerpts from opera. New York Yankees pitcher, David Wells, paid $30,000 for a faded blue cap said to have belonged to the legendary Babe Ruth, then wore his expensive purchase in a game. During the England v Romania World Cup match, British Telecom said there were 16 million fewer telephone calls than usual. After the match, there was a surge of electricity as 450,000 kettles were switched on. Wimbledon tennis spectators in 1998 devoured 12 tons of salmon, 24 tons of strawberries, 200,000 sandwiches, 22,000 pizza slices, 30,000 servings of fish and chips, 150,000 buns and 135,000 ice-creams. A yellow and green flag the size of half a football pitch and signed by supporters wishing their side good luck was received by the Brazilian World Cup squad. Finally, spare a thought for Ebbsfleet United this week, having set off by coach at 7.30am for their midweek game at Barrow they encountered major traffic problems that led to the game kicking off at 9.30pm. The cause of their final delay on the M6 - a baked bean spillage. The Editor s Epistle Good afternoon and welcome to Herns Lane, the home of Welwyn Garden City Football Club. Today we extend warmest greetings to the players, officials and supporters of Codicote for a Spartan South Midlands League Division One fixture. Wednesday night saw the Citizens get back to winning ways with an empathic 6-0 win over Sun Postal Sports, the six goal haul was the first here at Herns Lane by the Citizens since defeating Royston Town 6-1 back in the Premier Division on the 6th February The win leaves the Citizens just three points away from that magic 40 points thus ensuring Division One football next season, lets hope we can reach that landmark this afternoon. Our opponents today are making their first ever visit to Herns Lane for a competitive fixture and will be looking to gain revenge from the recent home defeat handed out by the Citizens. Codicote are having an amazing season, have been in the top eight for most of the campaign, the club have secured a League Challenge Trophy Final appearance and on Thursday night were in action against Stony Stratford Town in their quest to book a second cup final appearance in the Division One Cup. Let s hope their final appearances don t bring about any more problems with Sockgate as experienced by their U18 side in the County Cup final. Following today the first team takes to the road with a trip to Hemel Hempstead to face London Lions (who many believe are destined for the Division One championship title) before returning to face Kings Langley at home on the following Tuesday (please note change of day for a home midweek fixture). For the reserves they are away at Crawley Green Reserves today and next Saturday face the same opposition in the reverse fixture here at Herns Lane. With the first team idle next Saturday why not come down and give Mark Slater and Dave Tripp your support. Enjoy the game and let s get behind the lads, your vocal support is very much appreciated. Go Citizens Karen

14 TODAY S VISITORS - CODICOTE F.C. The earliest records of Codicote Football Club date back to the season when Codicote joined the Hertfordshire County League Eastern Division, where they remained until the league was reorganised in 1921, moving Codicote into the North & East Division. In 1923, the league was reduced to a single league, the Herts County League, and at the end of the season the Herts league was disbanded. The league reformed once again, but only for one season in the season, before disbanding again. Codicote then joined the North Hertfordshire League and remained there until 1993, when the present Chairman, Jim Bundy, took the side once again back into the Herts Senior County League. In the club were promoted from the County League Division One after finishing third and in the club lifted the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy. The Club invested in two ground sharing agreements firstly two seasons at Hertford Town and a further two seasons at Gosling Sports Park enabling the Club to achieve the facilities required by Step 6 clubs. Last season 2011/12 under the management of Liam Errington and Jim Mullen finally saw the team achieve promotion to the Spartan South Midlands League when finishing third and thus extending the ground share at Gosling Stadium.
