5 Welwyn Garden City 3 Ely City 0 By Phil Ravitz The goals of top scoring Jason Caswell that propelled WGC to an 11 game match-winning streak and 15 matches unbeaten, just a month ago, returned with a vengeance in this FA Vase Second Round replay. Caswell, scorer of 22 this term, before this return meeting, hadn't scored in six, while his scoring partner Joel Norris, with 16 to his credit, had notched just a couple of singles, in recent weeks, as the Citizens had lost four on the trot. But the pair re-found their form in time to take the Herns Lane outfit into the third round proper for the first time in eight seasons and onto a tough-looking trip to Eastern Counties Premier runaway leaders Hadleigh United on Saturday, fortnight, December 7. After a thrilling 0-0 draw the previous Saturday in Cambridgeshire, there was a cagey start to this one, in front of a 165 crowd at Herns Lane. Caswell showed that perhaps his touch was still eluding him, when in 12 minutes he put a good opening tamely wide, in WGC's best early chance. But it was a rare moment of excitement in a rather drab opening half-hour. Sean Brettell ventured forward to thrash a wildly overhit effort across the face of goal and Sam Perrin's high free-kick cleared the Ely crossbar, but it was tame stuff until the 40th minute. Then Norris was fouled by Ely defender Kenny Smith 20 yards out and referee Panconi awarded the kick. Norris took it himself, crashing a great effort over the Ely wall and beyond keeper Young into the far corner, to break the deadlock and sent the home support into raptures. Ely made a bright start to the second-half and showed far more intent than in the first 45 minutes, Joe Croft, in the home goal, being brought to his first save of the replay, to hold onto a fierce crossshot from the visitors' Lewis McDonald. But nine minutes after the restart WGC had doubled their lead and Caswell had re-found his touch. Robbing Smith on the edge of his own area, Caswell left the Ely defender trailing, before crashing in his first goal since October 16, beyond Young. The Citizens' delight was complete six minutes later. This time Norris made it for his strike partner, racing onto a clearance from returned skipper Liam Kenna, to outpace Ben Lawrence and hold it up cleverly for Caswell to come onto the pass and smash the third past Young, on the hour. There was no way back for Ely now, though to their credit, the Cambridgeshire side kept pressing until the end and Perrin had to clear a McDonald effort off the line while striker Tom Meechan put a glorious opening over the bar, when well placed. Meechan had an even easier opportunity to reduce the deficit, from the penalty spot, four minutes from time, when WGC substitute Ben Awad committed a rash challenge. But Croft read the Ely striker's intentions and made a fine stop low down, tipping it away and the rebound was cleared for a corner, as the Citizens showed real determination to keep a clean sheet throughout the 210 minutes of the tie. Today we extend warmest greetings to the players, officials and supporters of Risborough Rangers for a Spartan South Midlands League Division One fixture. There is only one thing one can start today s column with, Wednesday night s celebrated scenes as we overcame the challenge of Ely City to reach the last 64 of the FA Carlsberg Vase. Despite the awful conditions, you our loyal gallant fans boosted by one ex-england goalkeeper and local lad David James turned out in full force and were rewarded by battling performance. Full credit must go to you, it was truly an amazing evening at the club topped off with a ladies dart team win. Today we return to the bread and butter of league points as we look to get our championship hopes back on track following a slight derailment of late. Our opponents this afternoon, Risborough Rangers, were promoted from Division Two at the start of the season and have settled in well proving they are not to be taken lightly and we must ensure we are on top of our game as we look to take the full three points on offer this afternoon. Following this afternoon we face two difficult away trips, firstly Crawley Green on Wednesday evening and then to Winslow United next Saturday (the latter giving us a early chance to avenge our defeat in the Division One Cup tie here some ten days ago). These are then followed by a trip to Suffolk to face Hadleigh United in the FA Vase, for those of you wishing to book a seat on the coach then see Karen Fisher this afternoon. For those not heading to Winslow next weekend then the Reserves, fresh from a equally impressive Herts Intermediate Cup win, will be in action here against Bushey Rangers and they would most welcome your support (admission is free). THE NEW LOOK PROGRAMME The editor would welcome any comments regarding this season s new look programme, be they criticisms or congratulations. It is also hoped in future to feature a letters page so any comments would be most welcomed on any topic regarding Welwyn Garden City Football Club. THE CITIZENS CLUBHOUSE PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CLUBHOUSE WILL BE OPEN TO VISITING SUPPORTERS, BEFORE THE GAME AND BOTH AT HALF TIME AND FULL TIME THIS AFTERNOON Enjoy the game and let s get behind the lads, your vocal support is very much appreciated. 16 TODAY S VISITORS - RISBOROUGH RANGERS F.C. Risborough Rangers Football Club started in 1971 as a team of 12 year olds who wanted to play competitive football. The main motivators were Life Presidents Tony Elsey and Derrick Wallace, who is still active within the club as President and a committee member. From this grew the Wycombe Star League that now provides football for hundreds of youngsters in the Wycombe area, and Risborough Rangers currently have teams at all ages ranging from Under 10 to Under 16 playing in this league. In the 1975/76 season, the previous years Under 16's went into the Wycombe League as a men's team, and in their second season in adult football won the Third Division. Unfortunately, the team then folded, after which the club provided only boy's football until the U16's of 1979/80, having won the United-Carr Cup, went into the Reading Youth League for two seasons, and then the Wycombe League. They won promotion in successive seasons, and were followed two years later by the following years U16's as a reserve team, who emulated the feats of their predecessor, ending up in the Ercol Senior League and the FA Walters Premier League consecutively. During this period the Berks & Bucks Junior Cup was won. In 1989 Risborough accepted an invitation to join the South Midlands League Division One. In the first two seasons it was hard and the club finished second from the bottom on both occasions, so therefore had to apply for re-election. The 1991/92 season saw a great improvement when Risborough finished in 8 th position whilst also celebrating its 21 st anniversary. In the 1994/95 season, they were promoted to the newly formed Senior Division, after finishing 4 th and they consolidated with a mid-table position in the next season. The next two seasons under the management of Bob Rayner and goalkeeper Jon Franklin saw the establishment of a sound Youth policy with an under 18's team in the Wycombe Sunday Youth League in addition to the first team and reserves in the recently formed Spartan South Midlands League. Both seasons saw a mid table position but in the 00/01 season they did reach the semi-final of the Senior Division Cup and the quarterfinal of the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup. When Bob Rayner left to manage Brackley Town in the Dr Marten s Southern Division at the start of the 98/99 season, Jon Franklin became manager and in 00/01 Steve Pearce became club coach. This resulted in a sound management team and in 01/02 the team finished in 10 th in the league which was the highest position in the last few years. Jon and Steve left the club at the end of the season to manage Winslow United in Division Two. In addition the link with Aylesbury United youth players was terminated and several other first team players moved to other clubs. David Ross was appointed manager for 02/03 but with a young squad of mainly local players we lacked the depth of experience and the team was relegated to Division Two. In 03/04 the club were delighted to welcome back Bob Rayner as Manager and after a short spell with Richard Gregory, he was joined by Doug Foster. After an enjoyable season the team finished 4 th and lost in the semi-final of the League Cup. Season 04/05 was an exact repeat of the previous one with a defeat against League winners Crawley Green in our final game the difference between 2 nd and 4 th position in the league. Between 06/07 and 10/11 seasons the team finished mid-table but finished 2 nd in 11/12. No floodlights resulted in another year in Division Two but last season promotion was finally achieved as the team finished 4 th and floodlights were installed last month for the start of this season. A massive result to find 38,000 after 3 years of intense fund raising and securing grants but worth all the hard work to achieve the step up to Division One. In addition the club are very keen to develop a much closer working relationship with our junior section to ensure that boys are not lost to other clubs at age 16 years and progress to our Under 18 Youth team
