3 Welcome to Dorking FC and The New Defence, our home ground for the 2015/16 season. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark Sale and his team at Horley Town FC for their hospitality and I hope that you enjoy your visit with us today. This is our second and final season here at The New Defence, ahead of our exciting move back to our old home in Meadowbank, which will be transformed into our iconic new home. As we continue our development at Dorking FC the new leadership team are very excited about this, their second season. Our vision remains focused on continuing to rebuild Dorking FC as a respected football club but also as a social enterprise by re-establishing Dorking FC as an iconic club at the heart of its rural community. The football management team have worked tirelessly over the summer and I would like to thank them for all their efforts. A big welcome back to our squad of players plus a number of exciting new players joining us. We have some bright young talent coming through our club and once again I expect we will see a good number of our U18 s appearing for our first team. A huge thanks go to my fellow Board members, all of our volunteer helpers, our football management team and of course our loyal supporters. We hope you will follow us on our journey, grassroots football is important to us all, and Dorking FC hopes to make its own contribution to the benefit of everyone. To keep up to date with developments and news at DFC join us on and on facebook.com/dorkingfc. Kind Regards, Grant Ashley, Chairman

7 MATCH REPORT: DORKING FC 3-0 FRIMLEY GREEN FC 26/09/15 Dorking FC capped a great week, breathing new life into their season, with a second successive win over Frimley Green. Having notched up a 5-1 cup win over Frimley just four days earlier, the Chicks built on their new found confidence and team spirit to take all three league points from the same opponents, courtesy of a Martin Smith first half goal and two goals within a minute from Kieran Lunn. The visitors were playing in the Premier Division just ast season and were keen to avenge the mid-week defeat. In a frantic first seven minutes they pinned Dorking in their own third of the pitch, winning a series of early corners that produced two fine saves from Andrew Osei first from an Adam Aimable far post header and then a fingertip save at full stretch. Both saves would have impressed Keith Hayward, the former Chicks keeper from the mid 1970 s who was watching the game. With Dorking soaking up the early danger, the home side had their first real attack on eight minutes with Martin Smith s smart turn and snap shot going into the side netting. Buoyed by sight of goal, the Chicks began to settle, moving the ball quickly and keeping possession, and broke the deadlock on 25 minutes. A long ball over the top found captain Martin Smith and, while Frimley s defence stopped to claim offside, Smith followed the age-old rule of playing to the whistle and calmly slotted the ball under keeper Tom Pastanic to give Dorking a 1-0 half time lead. The second half started with an early scare for Dorking when Andrew Osei landed awkwardly after punching the ball clear from a Frimley cross, but fortunately the in-form keeper was able to continue following treatment. If there had been an element of debate about Chicks first goal, there was no doubt about their second. A beautifully crafted goal started with Scott Wason s first time back heel flick to Martin Smith, who duly flicked the ball on first time to set Kieran Lunn free down the left wing. Lunn then cut into the Frimley box and placed the ball into the far corner of the net to double the Dorking lead. Just a minute later and Lunn put the ball in the net again, receiving an unselfish pass from Glen Wright on the edge of the box and rounding the oncoming keeper Postanic. At 3-0, Dorking continued to control the rest of the game and, with a well-organised back four denying the visitors any further clear-cut opportunities on goal, the Chicks saw out the game to comfortably secure their second league win of the season. The Chicks will be looking for a third straight victory when they entertain Cove at the New Defence in the Southern Combination Cup tonight. League action follows with a visit to Farleigh on 3rd October followed by a home game against high-fliying Staines Lammas on Non-League Day, Saturday 10th October. Dorking FC: Osei, Brazil, Jupp, Harmsworth, Fowler, Huxley, Wright, Wason, Smith, Lunn, Akinwande Subs Hodel-Murphy, Jeeves, Miller, Finn, Asafarr Report by Paul Killick

11 MEADOWBANK UPDATE No. 2: LOVE FOOTBALL, LOVE YOUR COMMUNITY, JOIN DORKING FC! Dorking FC is looking for new volunteers to join the running of the community-based club in a new Management Committee, as it gets in shape for a return home to the new Meadowbank football ground in Work will start at the end of this month on the rebuilding of the Chicks' traditional home at Meadowbank. In just under a year, Dorking FC will return to the town at the heart of a new, state-of-the-art stadium, providing an exciting sports facility for the whole community. Over a thousand local youth players will join the club at the new Meadowbank, taking advantage of the all-weather artificial pitch for weekly training sessions. Surrey FA have also announced that they are moving their headquarters to the site, making Dorking's home ground the centre of football in the county. Plans for the exciting move home start now. Dorking FC is a not-for-profit organisation, run on an entirely voluntary basis and in accordance with true amateur sport values, in the interests of the community. In preparation for next season, the club is now recruiting to some key, voluntary posts on a new Management Committee. Chairman Grant Ashley says, "Since taking over and rescuing Dorking FC last year, the club has been run by a Board of just five volunteer Directors. The foundations for survival have been laid and, with the return to a completely rebuilt Meadowbank ground, this is now one of the most exciting times and opportunities in the club's 135 year history. So the time is right for us to open up the running of the club to local people in a new Management Committee." Grant goes on to explain, "We want as many local people as possible who love football and love their community to get involved in establishing this great new sporting project for the town. If we all work together to get this right, we'll have a fantastic new Dorking football facility in Meadowbank park, used by thousands of local people, bringing a huge boost to the town centre, and with a thriving community-orientated football club at its heart." Dorking FC is looking for local people to join the new Voluntary Management Committee in three key roles: Fundraising Manager Club Supporters and Membership Manager Youth and Community Engagement Manager.
12 In addition, there are opportunities for people who would like to help out in any other way to join the club in non-specific assistant roles. Fundraising Manager Working both alone and with others, the Fundraising Manager will help develop new sources of revenue, from traditional sponsorship and advertising by local business to creative fundraising ideas and projects. Club Supporters and Membership Manager As the work continues at Meadowbank and interest builds throughout 2016 in the community facility and Dorking FC's return, the Club Supporters and Membership Manager will tap into that local enthusiasm to engage with local people who might wish to follow the football club and make use of its facilities at Meadowbank - building a new, thriving membership and supporter base for the town's historic football club. Youth and Community Engagement Manager With hundred of players from at least seven youth football clubs, local schools and other community groups all expected to make use of Meadowbank alongside Dorking FC, the Youth and Community Engagement Manager will work to liaise with other users and community groups, ensuring constructive and productive relationships. We aim to work together to maximise the potential not just for all the voluntary groups involved in the new stadium, but for the whole of Dorking, in what is truly a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make a real difference for local football, Meadowbank park, community activity in the town centre, local business and the entire town. If you would like to know more about these voluntary posts or are interested in helping run Dorking FC in any other capacity in one of the biggest years in the club's long history, dating back to 1880, then please your contact details to dorkingfc@btinternet.com and the Chairman, Grant Ashley, will get back to you to discuss the plans. Love football? Love Dorking? Then why not get involved! An artist s drawing showing the new Meadowbank stadium viewed from the DFC clubhouse bar:

16 Cove F.C. were formed in 1897 by a group of local people playing on a field behind their favourite Public House. Moving to a more central location, Cove Green became their home until 1973, when they moved to their present ground at Oak Farm. Playing their football in The Surrey Leagues, Cove enjoyed success for many years, winning more than their fair share of silverware in this time, including the League Championship 3 years in succession and a double in that period. In 1973, the club decided to upgrade and were accepted into the Hampshire Leagues, but had to leave 'The Green' for safety reasons. The Division 4 Championship was won at the first attempt, COVE FC: CLUB HISTORY and the Division 3 title followed 2 years later. After a couple of seasons, Cove finished Runners-Up in Division 2, but decided to withdraw from this league due to the time taken to away matches in Portsmouth or Southampton, before the M3 motorway was built. Thus they returned to the more local Combined Counties League in 1980, and won the League Cup beating close neighbours and rivals Ash United. Since moving into their new home, many changes have taken place at Oak Farm with the installation of floodlights a concrete perimeter wall and stand in their quest to house senior non-league football. Farnborough Town (then Conference League) and Aldershot Town (then Football League) just a couple of miles down the road. In 1990, Cove were given the chance to join the Vauxhall League (now Ryman League) after finishing third. New manager Chick Botley assembled a squad strong enough to finish a respectable fourth in their first season. Two more successful seasons followed narrowly missing out on promotion, once a final day defeat by the new Aldershot Town. Due to the ever spiraling cost of football at this level, Cove were forced to withdraw from their league and after 3 unsuccessful attempts to join the Wessex League, had to
17 revert back into The Combined Counties League, where they remained with little success. In 2009, the club appointed Koo Dumbuya as manager and a member of the Steve Beeks double winning team and well known around the area. Having played professional football for Aldershot and Brentford, the club decided his playing experience and knowledge could be invaluable and in his first season won the Southern Combination Cup with a 4-0 victory over Chessington and Hook. Season Cove won the Combined Counties League Cup with a 2-0 win over Bedfont, followed by a victory over Farnborough Town in the semi-final of the Aldershot Senior Cup before losing to Fleet Town in the final. In 2011 manager Koo Dumbuya left the club after 4 years as player and manager to take up a post at Chertsey Town, leaving a big hole to fill as his knowledge of local football is immense. During season 2012/13 following some poor performances, the club employed old player Anthony Millerick which brought instant success with the winning of the Aldershot Senior Cup and a 3-0 victory over Fleet Spurs, also finishing 3rd in the League, our highest position for many a year was another successful season finishing 5th after a run of 22 games 19 wins and 1 defeat was a very successful year sitting on top of the league for half the season, but unable to go for promotion due to the cost of ground improvements and travel, saw a considerable dip in form leading to a fifth place finish and a mass exodus of management and players. A complete change of personnel followed with the appointment of Dave Matthews as manager, following his success as Youth Team coach, accepting the challenge of building a new team capable of retaining their position in the Premier Division. No resume of Cove F.C. would be complete without mentioning Ron Brown, who in 1990 received an F.A. Award for 50 years service to Cove F.C., including 35 years as secretary. Ron retired in 1982 passing the reins to his son Graham who still remains in the job. Sadly Ron passed away in 2009 after 70 years service including 20 years as Club President. On a happier note, President and old player, Frank Kenton, and Secretary Graham Brown were both to receive an award from Hampshire FA for 25 years service.
18 THE HISTORY OF DORKING FC Football has been played in Dorking since the 1830 s. It was first played in the street, and an annual match took place every Shrove Tuesday in This tradition continued until 1905 when it was outlawed after ten years of suppression, and by which time Association Football had defined formal The cockerel was also very apparent as the main feature of the club s badge, and hence the club soon became affectionately known as the Chicks. The team first played at a site on West Bank before moving to a pitch off Fairfield Drive and then later to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. The Chicks didn t move to its current location at Meadowbank until 1953 when their success demanded better facilities and a new ground was built on an old dumpsite. Dorking s High Street. Those on the east of St Martin s were one team known as the Eastenders and those to the West, on the opposing team, were the Westenders. The pitch extended all the way from London Bridge Road to the Washway Bridge in Station Road. The match was preceded by a procession led by a band and men dressed as women collecting donations and carrying a cross inscribed with words kick away both Whig and Tory, wind and water, Dorking s glory. On the left of the cross was a red, white, and blue ball representing the Union, on the top a gold ball representing the winners, and on the right a red and green ball representing the cockerel colours of Dorking. Celebrations went on well into the evening when pre match collections were first distributed to shopkeepers for window damage and the balance consumed in beer at The Sun. rules for the game in 1863 (dictating kicking only) when rugby went one way with hands, and soccer (abbreviation for Association Football) went the other with feet. By now Dorking Football Club had formed in 1880, establishing itself as the second oldest football club in Surrey and one of the oldest in the country. The club originally played in green and red striped shirts with white shorts the three colours representing the famous Dorking cockerel. The new Meadowbank had a capacity of 5000 and a stand that accommodated 700. The ground was opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous and was inaugurated by an exhibition match against Corinthian Casuals. Dorking s most successful FA Cup run followed in 1955 when they beat Folkestone 3 1 in front of a home crowd of more than 4000 before going out in the next round to local rivals Epsom. In the 1950s annual spectator club membership stood at more than 1000.
