3 chairman s chat WITH DAVID FREEMAN, KNAPHILL FC CHAIRMAN Good Morning and welcome to Redding Way. A warm welcome to the officials, management and players of Frimley Green Football Club and the three match officials, Simon Craig, Andrew Beeney and Paul Sanders, I hope you all enjoy your short stay with us today. Well this fixture will already be the fifth of the season and although at time of going to print we did not know the outcome of our visit to Mole Valley SCR on Saturday, I m hoping we go into today s encounter on the back of another win to follow up on our hard fought 2-1 success over Warlingham last weekend. As everyone in the South East would of experienced, the weather on that day was extremely hot to say the least and I m not one to grumble about the good weather but I can safely say it was not the best weather to play football in, having said that no doubt we all might be saying the same again once the winter sets in! However, having travelled to the game myself and on the back of two successive defeats it was important we came away with three points which is what we did and finally get some points on the table. Today s visitors Frimley Green will no doubt provide us with a stern test but if we come away with maximum points it will put us back in the mix providing of course we came away with points on Saturday at Mole Valley. Away from first team affairs and I was pleased for Paul Dyer who took charge of his first competitive game for the Reserves on Saturday and although reports suggests it was not the best of game, it was the result that matter in the end and pleasing enough we picked up all three points in a 1-0 win over local rivals Sheerwater. The Youth team were in action for the first time last Monday night and it made it a good few days for the club as they defeated Godalming Town U18 s 2-1 at Wey Court. Our Ladies teams return to league action shortly but in the meantime both sides will be action this afternoon in two charity friendly matches, please show your support not only for the Ladies but for the two charities they are raising money for. I am pleased to announce that we have secured another partnership agreement this time with The Garden Light Shop who are based in Brentford Middlesex. The company will be advertising in this programme and their advertising banner can be seen pitchside on matchdays. I am still waiting on further news from Woking Borough Council on when we can install the new bar but the signs are good so hopefully work will begin in the not too distance future. We are continuing to improve the look of the ground both inside and out so keep and eye on one or two developments over the coming weeks and months. Don t forget in order the help with fundraising for the club we are continuing with Last Man Standing, Lottery Bonus Ball and the famous old scratch card. These are great ways to earn the club money and at the same time participants can come away with especially in Last Man Standing. Pleas speak to either Bryan Freeman or Mick Garbutt about these on matchdays. Until next time, enjoy the game. theknappers
4 MATCH REPORT Combined Counties League Division One August 11th 2012 Redding Way K.O 3pm Knaphill 2 Timba, Knowles South kilburn 4 L. Smullen (2), K. Thomas, M. Simpson Knaphill s kick-off to the new season has had the worse possible start with two defeats, both at home, as early expectations failed to materialise. Losing to Eversley the previous week, Knaphill faltered again against South Kilburn at Redding Way on Saturday, and despite scoring four goals from those two matches, they ve conceded seven, and no doubt a problem to address for the need to start picking up points. Although taking a 2-1 lead in the first half, the second period showed some under par performances, as South Kilburn stormed back with three late second half goals. Knaphill had got themselves off to a good start after seven minutes when Paul Timba got on the end of a neat pass from Craig Knowles, and netted from close range to make it 1-0. But Timba suffered an ankle injury as he scored, and took no further part in the game. In the early stages, Knowles was instrumental when going forward into the visitors defence, and one of his deliveries across the 18yard box, gave substitute Charlie Postance an opportunity to increase the lead after 14 minutes, but fluffed his shot. In the 20th minute, Knaphill went close when Dominic Worthington s header glanced off the bar and over. The slender one goal advantage to the home side was cancelled out after 38 minutes when South Kilburn equalised. It was left to Knowles to regain the lead when he drilled his effort past the keeper in the 45th minute. Instead of stepping up a gear in the second half, there was not enough urgency in their play, often being too casual and giving the ball away to easily, whilst up front there was not the necessary pressure put on the visitors. Closest they came to scoring again was when Luke Craig had an effort turned over the bar by the keeper which came early in the half. In the latter stages of the game, South Kilburn took advantage of some poor defending by scoring three goals, pulling level through Simpson in the 81st minute, then two late goals from substitute Louis Smullens. It could have been worse but for two other efforts on goal from which keeper Matt Nash denied the visitors. No doubt the overall performance needs a vast improvement for Knaphill s next game away to Warlingham next Saturday. Knaphill: Nash, Redrup, Green, Pearce, Worthington (Batica 70mins),P. Craig, Greenwood, Knowles, Wetherall, L.Craig (Abdellah(62mins), Timba (Postance 9mins). Scorers: Timba 7mins, Knowles 45mins. Booked: Greenwood, Batica theknappers

8 GU21 News around the ground Welcome everyone to Redding Way for our Bank Holiday Division One encounter against Frimley Green today. When the two teams met last season honours were equally shared, Frimley won 5-2 at their ground, with Knaphill winning the return fixture 3-2 at Redding Way. The opening results for this season has seen Frimley Green gain seven points from their first three league games, whilst Knaphill got off to poor start with defeats in the first two matches. But the team accomplished a well deserved win nine days ago in the 2-1 success away to Warlingham, of which we hope we can enhance on today. Our opponents today were without a fixture last Saturday due to prospective opponents Staines Lammas being involved in the FA Cup, whilst Knaphill played their fourth game of the season in the visit to Mole Valley, but no news on that one in today s programme as it went to print on FrIday. Our last home game here at Redding Way on 11 th August, brought about a second successive home defeat when visitors South Kilburn inflicted a 4-2 defeat on Knaphill, a result with one or two aspects that needed addressing for future games. However, having said that, the recent away game against Warlingham brought us our first points of the season in the 2-1 win with a much improved performance. Although trailing 1-0 just over midway through the first half, a penalty on the stroke of halftime saw Luke Craig slot home the spot kick for the equaliser. But Knaphill could have been 2-1 up, had Craig Knowles not missed an earlier chance, also from a penalty. In the final ten minutes of the game, Dean Greenwood fired in the winner to reap maximum points. Knaphill Reserves kicked off their season on August 18th with a 1-0 win in the local derby game at home to Sheerwater Reserves. Like the first team, new faces were prominent in the Reserves, as the three points were gained through Max Fouracre s well struck penalty in the 81st minute. A good start to new manager Paul Dyer s first season in charge of the team. Report on the Reserve game can be found elsewhere in the programme. Our Youth team have started a new season, and in a new League, their first fixture was away to Godalming Town in the Southern Youth League last Monday night, the lads getting off to a great start with a 2-1 win, both goals coming from Mikhail McLaughlin. Cup draws have recently taken place for our teams, and Knaphill U18 s have been drawn at home to Windsor and Eton U18 s in the 1st round of the Grant McLellan Cup. In the Southern League Youth Cup the U18 s are away to Cove U18 s in the 1st round on Monday 24th September kick-off 7.45pm, and in the third Cup competition, the Youth team will face the winners of the Molesey U18 s or Cranleigh U18 s in the 2nd round of the Surrey County Youth Floodlit Cup. Knaphill Reserves are away to Warlingham Reserves in the 1st round of the Reserves Challenge Cup on Saturday 8th September. Knaphill Ladies announce their first Cup competition of which the draw has been made, and that will be in the Surrey County Cup when they are home to Wandgas Ladies in the 1st round on Sunday 21st October. Theknappers
9 All first team Cup games have been announced in a previous matchday programme, and are in the fixture list in today s programme. This afternoon Knaphill Ladies are holding a Charity Event here with two games, the first will be for the Tracey Davis Memorial Trophy with Knaphill Ladies playing Cobham Ladies, and the second match sees Knaphill Ladies Reserves play Westfield Ladies in the Paul Hampshire Memorial Trophy. The Charities are Christopher Smile and MacMillan Nurses. Looking ahead, Saturday 13 th October is Non-League Day, a celebration of the semi professional and amateur game, and a chance for fans of bigger clubs to experience football at a level they maybe otherwise unfamiliar with. Moreover, it helps promote hundreds of clubs across the country who are almost exclusively run by volunteers, and do so much good for the local community. There are no Premier or Championship matches on that day, and given the financial climate, clubs outside the Football League need all the support they can get. So come on down to Redding Way on 13 th October, when Knaphill will be hosting Worcester Park in Division One kick-off 3pm. Support Knaphill FC, and mention the Non-League day to all your sporting friends and families. Following today s League game, next up on the agenda will be the 1 st Qualifying Round of the FA Vase, when Knaphill make the visit to Premier Division club Ash United this coming Saturday 1 st September kick-off 3pm. The next home game will be in the League when we play hosts to Division One newcomers Epsom Athletic on Saturday 8 th September kick-off 3pm. Enjoy today s game.. Theknappers
10 introducing Frimley green FC The club was founded in 1919 and currently play at Frimley Green Recreation Ground. The present clubhouse was erected in 1972 when The Green played in the London Spartan League and used a pitch on the lower part of the park with the changing rooms where the car park now is. A few years later a new pitch was laid adjacent to the clubhouse and changing rooms were added. The Reserve Team joined the Combined Counties League in 1979 and at the start of the 1981/82 season the First Team switched across and Floodlights were installed for the first time. The Club competed in the League for a period of 15 years, during which time they won the Dan Air Elite Cup and the Reserves won the Division One Challenge Cup. Due to the financial situation in 1994 the club voluntarily dropped down into junior football. They were Runners-up in the Surrey Intermediate League (Western) in their first season but were denied promotion into the Surrey Premier League. The next four seasons saw a period of rebuilding and repaying debts and the club were finally accepted into the Surrey Premier League in 1999, after finishing Runners-up and winning the League Cup. Off the field new Floodlights were installed and a Boardroom created within the Clubhouse. A three year spell followed, in the renamed Surrey Senior League, which saw the club finish fourth, sixth and Runners up and attain promotion back into the Combined Counties League where they have played since. Season was the most successful to date, in the Combined Counties League, with the club finishing in 15 th Place and amassing 58 points. Season was very disappointing on the playing front but we managed to avoid finishing in a relegation position, however, despite substantial ground improvements we were demoted on ground grading, to make way for 7 clubs from the old Ryman Division two. In the past 4 seasons in Division One we have had mixed fortunes, finishing 6 th at the end of season 2007/08 but then in season 2008/09 finished 3 rd from bottom but had our most successful season ever in the FA Vase, reaching the third round and won an FA Cup match for the first time. In season 2009/10 we managed to finish high enough up the table to retain our place in the FA Cup but last seasons poor performance has seen us excluded this season. We are, however, still in the FA Vase and continue to make ground improvements to ensure that we retain our level 6 status at our own ground. 2001/02 Surrey Senior League Runners-up 1998/99 Surrey Intermediate League (Western) Runners-up 1998/99 Surrey Intermediate League (Western) Cup Winners 1991/92 Combined Counties League Runners-up 1990/91 Dan-Air Class Elite Cup Winners 1990/91 Combined Counties League Division One Challenge Cup Winners 1980/81 Combined Counties League Division One Challenge Cup Runners-up 1967/68 Surrey County Senior League Charity Cup Winners Theknappers

20 Plenty in reserve The latest news from the reserves.. The reserves have had a good pre-season with games against Farnborough North End winning 4-1 and Lightwater United winning 6-1, the training has been intense and well planned with lots of new faces and young players progressing from the youth team. Combined Counties League Reserves Division Knaphill Reserves 1 Sheerwater Reserves 0 Saturday 18th August 2012 On a very hot afternoon, more suited to cricket than football, Knaphill Reserves started their new season with a 1-0 win in the local derby against Sheerwater Reserves at Redding Way on Saturday. Knaphill had new look squad from last season which included a former Knaphill player Dan Cox who due to injury, had not played for nearly two years. Both teams had scoring opportunities, throughout the game, but were in need of some sharper finishing. Knaphill found themselves caught in the Sheerwater offside trap several times with the visitors having the better of the first half exchanges, whilst Knaphill showed up better in the second period. Jay Coombes had an early opportunity to carve an opening towards goal but insufficient power in the effort saw the chance slip away. Sheerwater showed their intent on goal in the 17th minute, but Jimmy Edwick was to deny the visitors taking the lead. Neither team were able to break the deadlock as the second half progressed with wasted opportunities. Tony Barbato came on to replace Joe Green who earlier had talked himself into getting a yellow card from the referee. The substitute added a bit more pace in the Knaphill side and after 69 minutes was to see his well struck effort turned round the post by the keeper for a corner. In the 85thminute, substitute Ben Landi had a shot glance off the bar, then as the game seemed to be drifting towards a goalless encounter, Knaphill were awarded a penalty after 87 minutes. Daniel Tierney was upended in the box, and Max Fouracre hammered home the spot kick. It was enough for Knaphill to see out the remainder of the game, including stoppage time, and pick up maximum points. Team: Edwick, Cox, Joe Green(Barbato 60mins), Pilley, Niven, James Green, Harvey, Mayger, Cope (Tierney 65mins), Coombes(Landi 81mins), Fouracre. 22 We ve got youth on our side with Nick Croshaw Youth Team Secretary Knaphill U18 s start the new season with a virtually new squad and in a new league. After two seasons in the Allied Counties League, the decision was taken to move to the Southern Youth league as it meant less travelling and most of the SYL teams were also in the CCL. Knaphill s record against SYL sides in the Grant -McLellan Cup has been 100% so far and expectations are high for this new season. Only three players are left from last season s squad; captain Jonny Coats, goalkeeper Craig Taylor and full back Josh Dawber. During the summer months Manager Gary Taylor has been scouting looking for talent to bring into the club, and I think you will agree he has unearthed some cracking players. The U18 s has been a breeding ground for talent over the last two seasons as players such as Jack Ball, Joe Turner and Haluna Mesembe have gone on to play not only for Knaphill s 1 st team or even CCL Premier Division teams, but they have gone on to play at even higher levels, which is a fantastic tribute to the coaching and management of these players whist they have been at Knaphill. The coaching team has been expanded with the addition of qualified coaches, Max Fouracre and Alex Lumley, who along with former semi-pro Mark Dawber will be assisting Manager Gary Taylor in keeping the lads on the right track. Gary has assembled a youthful squad with half the squad 16 or under, but be assured that these boys will be able to hold their own in an U18 league. The Knappers pre-season saw some very tough matches against some very experienced opposition who play at a higher level, however wins against Molesey Juniors (5-1) & Met Police (3-1) were tempered with defeats to Hampton & Richmond Reserves (1-3), Ascot Utd (2-5) & Carshalton Ath (4-6) and a 0-0 draw against fellow SYL side Molesey. The importance of these games was to get the squad used to each other, sort out a playing formation and not just the results. The young Knappers side travelled to Godalming Town to face their first game in the SYL on Monday night. Godalming finished 4 th in the West Division last season and would be a stern test for the young Knappers. The game started off at a tremendous pace with action at both ends, but it was Knaphill who broke the deadlock on 13 minutes when livewire striker Mekhail McLaughlin burst through the Godalming defence and from the edge of the area slotted his shot past the static keeper and into the far corner. The first half continued with Knaphill holding the upper hand and controlling the game, but without any further score. Godalming started the second half after a half time roasting from their management and quickly pressurised the Knaphill back for and an equaliser soon ensued as the pressure told. The Knappers are made of stern stuff and fought their way back into the game and pressed for the winner. They were rewarded in the 77 minute as a goalmouth scramble ended with McLaughlin poking the ball over the line for his second and Knaphill s winner. Godalming looked beaten and the last 10 mins saw the Knappers holding the ball well and waiting for the final whistle. A fantastic start to the Knappers 2012/13 campaign, but we all know that the season is not won in August, the Knappers next game is away to Farnham Town on Wednesday 29 th August at The Memorial Ground, Mead Lane, Farnham, KO 7.30pm. Come along and see the future of Knaphill FC. theknappers
