touchlinetalk Kevin Bailey, Joint First Team Manager Having only just taken over as joint manager with Phil Ruggles, the first couple of weeks have been tough. With a large amount of players following the previous manager out of the club, we have been very busy trying to build up a new squad of players capable of competing at CCL division 1 level. We have been able to keep hold of a couple of first team regulars from the old regime who have helped us out thus far and will be what we look to build on from here on in. Our first game was always going to be difficult. We only had one week and one training session to introduce ourselves to the club and to get a side together to face current league leaders Spelthorne Sports. Whilst the result was obviously disappointing and showed that we have a lot of work to do, we also took positives from the performance and the fact that no-one gave up and everyone gave us 100% on the day is promising. We are now looking forward and are going to continue to look for players to bring into the club and help improve our squad. We are lucky in that we have been able to keep Tom Davis and Matt Edwards at the club as first team coaches, as well as both the reserve and youth management teams who have started well this season. Both the reserves and youth team management have been very helpful in our first weeks and we look forward to working closely with them to ensure positive progression throughout the club. Phil and I are very much looking forward to the challenge ahead. We are looking to create a positive atmosphere at the club both on and off the pitch and hopefully with a lot of hard work from all involved success will follow shortly. theknappers

MATCH REPORT Combined Counties League Division One September 22nd 2012 Ashford Common K.O 3.00pm SPELTHORNE SPORTS 5 KNAPHILL 0 With changes taking place in Management and four new signings in the starting line up, the visit to high flying Spelthorne Sports on Saturday, was always going to be a tough first match for the team against a side at the opposite end of the table. Knaphill put plenty of effort into the game, but although effort is not sufficient alone, it certainly wasn t going to be an instant quick fix for the new management and their team in this current lean spell. In this match a total of conceding five goals seems a bit harsh to swallow, but it will take time over two or three games to improve and pick up points on that unwanted statistic of just one win from seven league games this season. But obviously two major facts to conquer are a lack of goals and at the same time conceding them. However, Knaphill did settle and show some early commitment in this game. In the 14th minute Michael Pym delivered an effort which was just in the keeper s reach to save. Two minutes later, it was Knaphill keeper Matt Nash who denied the home side a breakthrough, whilst the visitors were also trying to make a telling break to open the scoring at the other end. But it was Spelthorne who made the first strike through Lee Staples to go ahead after 19 minutes. Knaphill s Dan Cox making his first full appearance in the first team following a long spell out injured, unleashed a shot from 20 yards which veered wide of the far post on the half hour mark. Spelthorne, often looking sharp up front, increased their lead in the 37th minute with a brisk move into the heart of the defence and a second goal for Staples. But still Knaphill tried to break through the home defence and reduce the deficit. Although Phil Ruggles had a chance after 55 minutes which went just over the bar, more penetration was required to force the home defence on the back foot in search of a goal. It was Staples who notched his hat-trick for Spelthorne in the 68th minute to give the home side a commanding lead. Knaphill opened up an opportunity to pull one back after 73 minutes when Daryn Hennessey slipped the ball through to Pym whose shot was blocked by the keeper. Five minutes later Spelthorne virtually wrapped up the game when it was Staples yet again, this time from the penalty spot after McShane had handled near the goal line. Hennessey went close to a consolation goal for the visitors when he cut in from the right, only to see his shot on goal glance away off the far post. But Knaphill were dealt the final blow in the fourth minute of stoppage time when Spelthorne substitute Krister Robinson drove home the fifth goal and a result which saw them keep their grip on second place in Division One. theknappers

But there s a lot to be done over the forthcoming games for Knaphill, number one priority being goals, and obviously not leaking so many. But although conceding many goals across seven league games, is another factor, that despite the new changes in the squad, the team will turn that corner with vision of getting themselves out of the basement and vital steps up the league ladder. Team: Nash, Cox, Headland, Doble, McShane, Greenwood, Felgate, Green, Ruggles, Pym, Dart(Hennessey 71mins). theknappers

GU21 News around the ground Good afternoon everyone and a warm welcome to our opponents AFC Croydon Athletic, their players, officials and supporters, for this their first ever visit to Redding Way, and also welcome the three match officials for today s Division One encounter. Our opponents are one of two new teams to enter the Combined Counties League in Division One this season, the other team being Epsom Athletic who were here two weeks ago and went away with maximum points and a comfortable 4-0 win. How things have changed since that game. Manager Phil Ellery departed from the Club, two days after the Epsom game and coming off the back of the Club s worst ever start with five defeats in their first six league games, plus a 2-1 exit from the FA Vase. Knaphill have now installed Kevin Bailey and Phil Ruggles as joint first team managers with Phil also taking on a player s role. Within a few days of taking over the management reins, they were bringing in some new signings, four of them making the start line-up in last Saturday s match away to Spelthorne Sports. The new arrivals are Daryn Hennessey, a midfielder who featured for Westfield last season, and prior to that had been at Chelsea, where he started his career before moving onto Bristol City, and in a full circle returned to Surrey and played for Woking. Daryn also represented Republic of Ireland at Under 17 level. Other players joining the Club are Jamie Doble, a defender from Westfield with over 30 appearances, and midfielder James Felgate, who had limited first team appearances at Westfield. Neil Roissetter returns to Knaphill after spells with two local clubs, Westfield and more recently Sheerwater, and Joe McShane a defender, joins from Sheerwater. Also joining us is goalkeeper Nick McGregor from Westfield and defender Danny Perks from Sheerwater. A warm welcome to you all. Whilst we had new players coming in, inevitably there were players who had played under previous Manager Phil Ellery, have been released by the Club, which includes Jamie Redrup, Matt Ward, Luke Craig, Patrick Craig, Ryan Williams, and Liam Parrington. It was to be a tough baptism for the new players, together with other members of the team during last week s game at high flying Spelthorne Sports. Well at this stage, no one would envisage a dramatic change of results, as the lack of scoring and conceding goals can t provide a quick fix. But although the result, a 5-0 defeat, seems as if Knaphill had carried on where they left off against Epsom Athletic the previous week, it wasn t quite the case. Theknappers

There was definitely more effort and commitment shown in this defeat than the Epsom game, despite the scoreline. But two main factors still remain, an urgent need of scoring goals(none in the last four league games), and concede less, although I have to say that conceding five last week, was a bit harsh on the lads. It s going to be tough over the next few weeks, but I believe the results will turn around, and it will be sooner than later. Match report on the Spelthorne game is elsewhere in this programme. Other football from last weekend saw our Reserves pull back from a goal down against Frimley Green Reserves, to equalise through Lee Cope and gain a worthy point on Saturday, and the week before, the Reserves had a good Challenge Cup 2-0 win away to Warlingham. Our Ladies side, who lost their opening League game 6-0 away to Tring, bounced back last Sunday with a 3-1 win over Kent Magpies, with goals from Allen Kerrie(2) and Nicola Marr. The Ladies Reserves also gained maximum points in the 4-1 win away game to View Ladies, scorers Ruth Nicholson, Lucy Stevens, Olivia Buzaglo, and Ellie Teverson. Knaphill Youth were in action on Monday night, and the latest roundup of their matches are also in this programme. Well that s just about it for this week, the first team are back at Redding Way on Tuesday 2 nd October with the local derby match against Westfield in the Division One Challenge Cup kick off 7.30pm. Prior to that, Knaphill are away to Banstead Athletic in the League next Saturday 29 th September. Enjoy the game.. Bryan Theknappers

introducing AFC CROYDON athletic AFC Croydon Athletic was officially born on 6th February 2012 after a group of supporters gathered at Selhurst Evangelical Church in South Norwood to form a new club. The newly appointed committee had just 7 weeks to put everything in place to convince the Football Association and the League that they were worthy of a place at Step 6 in the pyramid. Despite the challenge it was a successful journey. The need to form a new club had about because of the demise Croydon Athletic FC who had become the innocent victims of an international cricket match-fixing scandal by their then owner. Valiant attempts to find a buyer, which looked very positive at times, turned out to be fruitless and with debts mounting and owners unwilling to pay what they owed the club folded playing its last game in December Having secured the support of the Combined Counties League and the London FA, representatives of the Club met officials from the FA and made their case for being placed in Division One. Having made a presentation and answered questions for more than ninety minutes there followed a long wait to see if they would endorse the application. On the day of the first annual general meeting, on 10th May, the Club got the call that they had been recommended to be placed at Step 6. The biggest challenge had been securing a stadium to play at. The club s real home remains the Keith Tuckey Stadium off Mayfield Road but that currently lies empty as the owners of the old Club refuse to give it up and back to the Council. It is hoped that this will be resolved and discussions can start with the Council about the Club s return there in the future. For this season at least, however, it is indebted to both Croydon FC and Croydon Council who have facilitated the use of Croydon Sports Arena as its new home. With a place in the league secured the focus shifted from off the field priorities back to the team. On 29th May the Club were pleased to announce the appointment of Antony Williams as its first manager and along with his management team he set about the task of putting together a squad capable of competing in the division. The preparations begun in earnest with the first pre-season friendly against Fisher FC and the journey had really begun. At 3.03pm on Saturday 4th August Westfield FC had the task of kicking off the Club s first competitive match! Theknappers

Plenty in reserve The latest news from the reserves..with Manager Paul Dyer Saturday 8th September Warlingham 0 Knaphill 2 - League Cup. The lads bounced back to winnings ways after the Sandhurst defeat. Going to Warlingham's home pitch where not many teams come away with a result we started the game quick and strong and could have taken the lead through Sam Light missing a one on one on three minutes. Charlie Postance had two great chances but their keeper done very well with two tremendous saves. Then on the twenty five minute mark Charlie Postance opened the scoring meeting a cross from Johnny Coates on the left to head it home. On forty minutes Johnny Coates once again crossed the ball and James Green took the ball with one touch to lay on James Milne for a twenty five yard shot that entered the net in the left hand corner to go two up at half time. Second half we continued to dominate the game without our hosts causing us any problems and we now have progressed into the quarter finals. Saturday 15th September Knaphill 1 Frimley Green 1 League We played Frimley Green who had struggled to field since the start of the season however they turned up at Redding Way with twenty two players with a number of first team faces in their squad. In the first half Frimley dominated the game as we looked to still be in the changing room. On thirty minutes Frimley took a well deserved lead, we then got to the break at one goal down. We came out the second half with some stern words from the management as we started to create some chances. On seventy minutes we made three changes and changed the shape of the team which paid off as Lee Cope scoring from twenty yards. In the last ten minutes Frimley s keeper made three great saves to keep it level at the final whistle. Charlie Postance Lee Cope Dan Tierney theknappers

We ve got youth on our side with Nick Croshaw Youth Team Secretary Five weeks into the new season for the U18 side in their first season in the Southern Youth League and The Knappers currently lie in second place in the table, albeit having played more games than any-one else so far. Due to issues beyond the clubs control, all the U18 games have been played away from home so far and a tally of 2 wins, 2 defeats and 1 draw can be considered to be a respectable return. The opening game of the season was played on a delightful August evening and saw a comfortable 2-1 win at Wey Court, home of Godalming Town, with pair of goals from striker Mikhail McLaughlin. The second game was at The Memorial Ground, Farnham where The Town gave The Knappers a lesson in finishing by running out 4-2 winners. The Knappers scored through Stevie Kemp with a goal direct from a corner and an Ahmed Sensausaoui strike from outside the box. Week three involved a trip to The Spectrum in Guildford and again a poor display saw The Knappers humbled by a 4-1 score line and even the consolation goal was gifted as the Guildford keeper failed to hold on to a Turkay Suleyman free-kick and Jamal Rodney was on hand to poke it in. These two defeats were disappointing as in both games the opposition were allowed to take the upper hand and Knaphill played on the back foot for the majority of both matches. Redemption was at hand however and a trip to deepest, darkest Surrey; to the purported largest village in England - Cranleigh. A game played at 100mph and refereed very well saw honours even as a goal in the first half by Jamal was cancelled out by a Cranleigh equaliser in the second half. Knaphill had their chances to take all three points, but a draw was a fair result on the night as all concerned agreed. Bottom Meadow was the next port of call on Monday night for the trip to play Sandhurst Town. Last season in the Allied Counties League, Knaphill snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with two goals in the last minute of added time. This time around Jamal scored within 21 seconds, taking a second goal before the half hour mark which bookended a powerful header from Jakub Kurdziel to send The Knappers in at half-time three goals to the good. The second half was a different story altogether with Sandhurst coming out of the blocks like Usain Bolt and pulling a goal back in the first five minutes. A Sandhurst penalty with 8 minutes to go made the end of the game a real roller coaster as both teams see-sawed back and forwards looking for another goal. The final whistle was greeted with a mixture of relief and frustration that Knaphill had let Sandhurst so nearly back into the game. theknappers

This year s team has a very different make-up to last years and has just 3 players remaining from that team. However despite the youth and inexperience a good team spirit has grown up and mention must be made of Jonny Coats, team captain and Man of the match award winner 3 times; Craig Taylor in goal and sometime right-back and Josh Dawber at left-back who are the three senior players and have made a good impression on the younger players. The team s next game is on Monday 23 rd away at Cove for a League Cup tie (KO 7.45pm) and the first home game being played on Thursday 4 th October (KO 7.30pm) with the visit of Ash United to Redding Way. The following Monday 8 th October sees the visit of Windsor to Redding Way as The Knappers start their third campaign in the Grant-McLellan Youth Cup for teams in The Combined Counties League, in which The Knappers have been runners-up for the last two years.
