3 Knaphill FC KICK-OFF by Bryan Freeman Welcome to Redding Way Good afternoon everyone and a welcome to Redding Way. A warm welcome to Farleigh Rovers, their players and officials, also today s three match officials. We go into this game having completed a third of our league programme, which sees Knaphill in the unfamiliar position of 14th place with three wins, three draws, six lost, and 12 points. Farleigh, who were without a game last week, are two places above us in the table and have five points more. After our League Cup defeat at Chobham two weeks ago, it was another local derby last Saturday with Sheerwater the visitors in a Division One encounter here at Redding Way, a match which showed improvement on the previous week s performance. A deserved point in the 2-2 draw against our local rivals, who took the lead early on in the first half. In the second half, Matt Brunt scored a stunning equaliser from 25 yards, with new signing and substitute James Norman making it 2-2 after 80 minutes. Knaphill came close to snatching a late winner, but were denied by the keeper at the near post. But we gained a point out of it, which we hope can be improved on today. The game against Sheerwater turned out to be Matt Baker s last for Knaphill. For many seasons a prolific goalscorer for the Club, Matt made the move to Eversley earlier this week, and follows Ian Savage, who also signed for the Hampshire club earlier this month. Matt, who scored had four goals in 13 games for Knaphill this season, had not been at his best for several games, but he has served the Club well in his many seasons as a top goalscorer. Matt is likely to return to Redding Way before the end of November when Eversley are the visitors. Knaphill made five signings last week, three from Premier Division club Chertsey Town, and one from Bedfont Sportsfour of whom made their debuts against Sheerwater, Jack Leighton, Dom Worthington, James Norman and Tony Hadley, the latter on the pitch for just a few minutes as substitute, before sustaining a shoulder injury, which left Knaphill with ten men for the last 18 minutes of the game. We welcome back Nick Darnell into the first team squad today. Nick was sidelined with an injury, and then married at the beginning of October, and a honeymoon before returning to play football with a game for the Reserves last week in the 1-0 defeat away at Eversley. Nick last played for the first team against Hartley Wintney on September 11th. Welcome back Nick the team have missed you! Matches coming up in November, starts next Tuesday away to Chipstead Reserves in the Surrey Premier Cup kick-off 7.30pm. Ironically, a year ago to the day, Knaphill played Chipstead in the same competition, also at their ground, and won the tie in a penalty shoot out. Next Saturday 6th November, we are away to Bedfont Sports kick off 3pm. We are without a game on Saturday 13th November, but on that day, the Reserves are at home to Old Rutlishians in the Surrey Intermediate Cup kick-off 1.30pm. the 1st team return to Redding Way for the last two Saturdays of November. On the 20th, we entertain Eversley kick-off 2.00pm, and Farnham Town are the visitors on 27th, also kick -off 2pm. Meanwhile, back to this afternoon Enjoy the game. red&black OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3

4 WITH BRYAN FREEMAN Action replay + Knaphill Brunt, Norman 2 Sheerwater Talbot (2) 2 Knaphill gained a deserved point, even if it came more from their second half performance than their first, against Sheerwater on Saturday, to finish 2-2 after twice being behind in this local derby at Redding Way. But at least it stopped the team s six match losing sequence in League and Cup competition, which stretched back to September 4th when they last gained a point in the draw against Warlingham in the League. Manager Bob Pritchard missed this match through illness, but whilst the he was looking for a speedy recovery, it was also his team that needed to recover from their recent match sequence of League and Cup losses. Although that looked unlikely from the first half showing, it did become more evident in the second period which gave them a tonic, from which after drawing level for the second time, they almost snatched a late winner. Sheerwater had the better of the first half having taken the lead after eleven minutes through Steve Talbot, who with his pace, gave new signing Jack Leighton a testing time on his debut at full back, which led to the Knaphill newcomer being substituted at halftime. The defender was one of four new signings for the Club and brought into the squad for this match. The visitors showed more of a cutting edge in the first half, with bother sides snatching at chances, more notable for Knaphill was Jack Ball s one on one with Archibald the Sheers keeper, the latter coming off best. Knaphill became rather vunerable to quick counter attacks from Sheerwater, but the defence survived to keep the score down to a single goal, whilst finding it rather difficult to find enough fire power in their own efforts from the front men. In the second half however, Sheerwater were more limited to goalscoring chances as the half progressed, with Knaphill excerting more pressure on the visitors. In the 58th minute, Knaphill scored the best goal of the game when their equaliser, delivered with perfection from 25 yards by Matthew Brunt left the keeper rooted to the spot as it flew into goal to make it 1-1. Sheerwater regained the lead in the 74th minute with Talbot netting his second goal which was well placed past Louis Dixon and into the far corner. Knaphill lost Tony Hadley with a shoulder injury within a few minutes after coming on as substitute, leaving the home side playing the last 18 minutes with ten men. Knaphill battled back and struck their second equaliser in the 80th minute with a header from substitute James Norman, who also went close to snatching a winner five minutes later, but Archibald was alert to what seemed a goal bound effort, as he turned the shot round the post for a corner. The keeper was in action soon after when he punched clear Chris Fox s effort. In the end, a welcome point for Knaphill, but that road to recovery of form, requires another prescription or two to get back to some improved healthier form and winning ways. Team: Dixon, Cox, Leighton(Pym 46mins), Gamble, Worthington, Brunt, Harvey, Hogsden(Norman 72mins), Ball(Hadley 72mins), Fox. Scorers: Brunt, Norman 4 red&black

12 THE STORY SO FAR HISTORY OF THE KNAPPERS Knaphill Football Club began its life in 1924 at Waterer's Park.Waterer's Park was left to Woking Urban District Council in 1924 by Mr Anthony Waterer of Knaphill Nursery. The Recreation Ground was originally part of the nursery called "Blue Gates Field" and the park was laid out by Woking Council between 1924 and the task taking so long as the bottom part of the field was very "soggy", whilst the rest was uneven and infested with moles. And these conditions can still be seen over 70 years later! Very little history is known about the Club between 1924 and 1980, although we do know that the team colours were originally red and white. In 1980 Knaphill were represented in the Old Woking and District League (now Guildford and Woking Alliance League) in Division 3 under Manager Dave Holloway. Dave took them from Division 3 through promotion to the Surrey Intermediate League. Dave then left Knaphill to take over Conference side Woking's reserve and youth teams. The late Andy Westcott took over the Manager's position at Knaphill in Andy successfully took the Club from Division 3 to the Premier Division 1, at the same time Clive Howes was running the Reserve Team, who also won promotion from Division 3 to the Reserves Premier Division 1.Geoff Poulton was to go on to take over the running of the Reserve Team from Clive Howes. In 1990, Mick Garbutt became the Manager of Knaphill and Paul Bambini was running the Reserve Team. Mick Garbutt left the Club in 1994 to join up with Colin Lippiatt and Geoff Chapple at Woking. After this time the club went into decline and was struggling for players for both the First and Reserve Teams. The decision was taken by then Senior Secretary, Sean Carrigy, to approach local team Heathlands, who were playing in the Guildford and Woking Alliance League. Heathlands found themselves struggling for facilities but not players; this gave the two teams the opportunity to amalgamate. Season 1995/96 saw the arrival of Greg Anderson as Manager, with Sean Carrigy running the Reserve Team. In 1996 Dave Freeman took over from Greg as First Team Manager. The Reserve Team Manager's position was handed over to Noff Diliberto in 1997; he left the Club a year later, when Carl Barker took over. Season 2002/03 saw 2 new men at the helm with Mick Garbutt in charge of the 1st Team and Frank Walters in charge of the Reserves. Paul Bailey took over midway through 2002/2003; Carl Barker then had a second spell as Reserve Team Manager with Danny James as Reserve Team Coach and Dave Freeman as 1st team coach. At the start of the 2003/2004 season the club formed a third team named KNAPHILL 'A' to play in the Guildford & Woking Alliance League due to volume of players at the club. Carl Barker took over as A Team Manager with Danny James in charge of the Reserves. The 2004/2005 season brought about further changes at team management level seeing Dave Freeman retiring from playing due to injuries and being appointed as 1st Team Manager with Mick Garbutt stepping down to Assistant Manager. There was also a new man at the helm for the A Team with Kevin Fletcher taking over from Carl Barker who had taken up the Chairman role. The club also moved into there new ground at Redding Way and the re-development of the Waterers Park ground, due to finished by April 2005, giving Knaphill Football Club some of the best facilities in the Surrey area. Season 2005/2006 was destined to be a big season for the club with the club established at its new ground at Redding Way and the A Team reverting back to Waterers Park having had the facilities rebuilt. 1st Team Manager Dave Freeman continued in charge for the 2005/2006 campaign and appointed former professional with Bristol City, Bob Pritchard, who has also managed at senior level with Chertsey Town, amongst others, as 1st Team Coach. Kevin Fletcher was appointed Reserve Team Manager having impressed by running the A Team the previous season. The 2005/2006 season did prove successful as we won the Division One title on the last day of the season against nearest rivals Virginia Water and gained promotion to the Premier Division. 13 red&black

13 2006/2007 continued with Dave Freeman in charge of the 1st Team and Paul Bailey re-appointed as Reserve Team Manager. The A Team management was split during the season. Martin Hobson took charge during the first few months but had to resign due to work and family commitments. Gavin Wilcox and Tim Handley then took over until the end of the season. The 1st Team claimed back to back titles by winning the Premier Division Championship which resulted in us achieving promotion to the Combined Counties Football League, the most successful period in the clubs history up to then. Bob Pritchard took over from Dave Freeman as Manager who became Bob s assistant during September The 2007/08 season was the busiest the club has ever endured. Over 45 matches were played at Redding Way and the pitch was still the best in the league at the end of the season. Bob Pritchard and Dave Freeman led the club to a very commendable 7th place in the CCL, our first in senior football. The early season had seen Knaphill pushing for a top 5 position, but poor runs over the Christmas & Easter periods saw the clubs performances drop off the leading runners; still 7th place was an excellent result considering the circumstances. Steve Hutton led the Reserves campaign, a massive 40 games with a mixture of good and bad results, beating the leaders of the league on at least two occasions, but dropping too many points by conceding late goals. The 2008/09 season started with a most welcome new face, the former Bisley and Farnborough Assistant Manager, Ian Savage. Ian joined us as player/coach and with his experience and knowledge this club has the right to feel proud that he chose to join Knaphill after receiving many other offers from teams at higher levels. With a reduction in League games in Division One to 34 from 38 in 2007/08, Knaphill entered two new Cup competitions. the Anagram Trophy and the Southern Combination Cup, both of which saw an early exit. However, the team kept a high profile in the League staying in the top half of the table all season, eventually finishing in fifth place. They could have become champions had they won their last game of the season when, in a tightly bunched set of teams in the top six. Knaphill on 69pts needed to win at Farleigh to pip Staines Lammas to the title. Disappointingly they lost 3-2, so near yet so far. The Reserves finished ninth in their Division with the second half of the season providng a 17 match sequence losing just two games. Adie Wilson having taken over in November from Graham Pope gelled well his players and together that was shown with the results. In the close season Terry Chapman was voted in as the new Chairman, replacing Nick Croshaw who stood down after two seasons. The newly formed Ladies side will also come under the senior banner and once again enhance on the size of the football club. Plans for floodlights and hard standing alongwith a 100 seated stand at Redding way are moving forward with the help of Woking Borough Council who continue as in recent years to support the football club. The 2009/10 season saw the team finish third in Division One, their best placing in the three seasons in the Combined Counties League. The previous two seasons the Club finished in seventh and fifth positions. Third would normally have gained the Club promotion, but due to the proposed floodlights installation being delayed, Knaphill have to make another challenge for promotion in 2010/11. The team won 26 out of their 40 league games, losing 10 with 4 drawn, scoring 98 goals and finishing with 82 points. Season 2010/11 is the first for a Youth team at the Club, with Knaphill Youth U.18 s playing in the Allied Counties League. From Possibility To Actuality red&black 14

16 WITH DAVID FREEMAN Last Time Out Knaphill 3 Farleigh Rovers 1 Davis, Baker, Fox Malcolm + In-form Knaphill continued their climb upwards in Division 1 with a well deserved 3-1 win over Farleigh Rovers at Redding Way on Saturday. In their last eight league games they ve gained 19 points from a possible twenty four, to put them within touching distance of the top three. But for all their endeavours, graft and determination, Knaphill had to wait until the last few minutes to stamp their final authority on the match with two excellent goals. Both teams seemed to want to an early advantage with a high speed start to the opening stages of the game. Knaphill were creating more chances than their opponents and should have taken the lead after 18 minutes, but somehow a precision pass from Gavin Brainch found Matt Baker in front of goal, who was unable to add a finishing touch, then two minutes later, Ricky Hogsden hit the side netting as he cut in on goal. Tom Davis gives us the lead against Farleigh In the first half hour, Knaphill were having the better of the exchanges, and the deadlock was broken in the 33 rd minute when Tom Davis took his chance well to hammer home from 15 yards to give Knaphill the lead. Farleigh bounced back to equalise in the 45 th minute when the home defence failed to clear danger, allowing Steff Malcolm to make it 1-1. Knaphill showed determination to regain the lead early in the second half when Baker had a shot turned away for a corner by the Farleigh keeper, before a Chris Fox header went over the bar. Prior to that, Knaphill keeper Richard Shelley made a fine save to deny Farleigh s Hindson. Knaphill put pressure on the visitors defence but found themselves unable to capitalise on some of their chances. Fox had a good opportunity after 82 minutes, but with the keeper stranded, it was a defender who made a timely block from his shot. However the pressure and workrate paid off with emphatic strikes coming late in the game. In the 87 th minute, a cross from Davis found Matt Baker who rifled his strike into the corner of goal for a 2-1 lead, then two minutes later, Chris Fox gleefully drilled home the third goal to wrap up the game and maximum points. 34 WITH TERRY CHAPMAN + The Final Word Knaphill Football Club may be going through a difficult patch at present what with one thing and another but this club has a very sound base. This was added to this week with the return of Wayne Griffiths to the Executive Committee. We welcome Wayne back and know that his drive and financial expertise will add to our stability. We now have at Knaphill Football Club a very experienced committee. This committee will lead us into our next phase. There has been much speculation in the last couple of weeks about our management and our players. Firstly on the players front. We have recently lost two excellent players in Ian Savage and Matt Baker to Eversley. I wrote a note about Ian in an earlier piece but I feel the loss of Matt Baker is a massive blow to this club. Matt has been with us for 11 seasons and probably on his own has pushed our club up the leagues. We will survive but I would like to thank Matt for his help in making Knaphill Football Club one of the best clubs in the area. Our door is always open for Matt to return if his time at Eversley is not successful. Secondly on the Management front can I tell you all now that Bob Pritchard is staying for the fight we have at this club. His commitment to this club is the same as it was when he joined. Yes we have lost a few games but I certainly do not blame Bob for that. We are all in it together so we now all need to pull together to get our club back up to where it belongs. On the financial front can I appeal to everybody involved in this club to think hard and dig deep to keep this club going.football clubs do not survive without funding. Please do not leave it to someone else. Me and the committee will guarantee the funding for this club but sometimes a little help from you all would be much appreciated. What can I do!!!! The number of times I try to sell a bonus ball to players and they say I haven't got any money. The money made each week for selling all 49 numbers is Every penny that we make goes back into the player s fund. Don't forget also you may even win The Bonus Ball costs 2.00 a number. The number you buy if it coincides with the number that is drawn out on Saturday nights Bonus Ball lotto you will win. Have a go at the new Last Man Standing Game. We are starting Game 4 this weekend so why not join in. It is a game of skill and prediction and a lot of fun. Talk to me before kick off on Saturday. It will cost you but you could win up to Even more if more join in. We also have a very good night s entertainment lined up for Thursday 11th November at Foxhills Golf Club. It does cost per head but most of you players spend more than that on a Saturday night out. The cost includes food and wine and guest speakers. They are confirmed as Richard Keys of Sky Sports and Alan Smith of Arsenal and England fame. Why not get your boss or a member of your family to sponsor you for your signing on fee. We will have other efforts this year to try to bring money in to the club. So when the events are announced please join in. Plans are already being discussed for our opening fixture under our new floodlights. We are thinking down the lines off an old boy s game followed by a game against a team from a higher division. Whoever wants to celebrate our opening will certainly be in for a good night. We are not tempting fate trying to organise an opening event because news through this week tells me I should be able to give you a start date very soon now. 38 red&black

35 I hope news of the start will give this club the boost it deserves. We know we have the players and the management to get our season going again. We will have to replace players and blood more of our youth team but this is not an issue. We welcome new players last week from Chertsey. It looks like we have some talent coming through looking at the performance against Sheerwater Football Club last week. Lets all hope our football is lifted this week and we perhaps start a run of victories that will move us up to the top three. On a less serious note; Chairman Doughty predicts bright future for Forest's young guns NOTTINGHAM Forest have their best crop of youngsters coming through the academy ranks in more than a decade. That was the message today from chairman Nigel Doughty, who believes the Reds first team could be bolstered by more than one talented product of the youth set-up either next season or by the following campaign. The club has a proud history of bringing young players through their ranks, most notably during the era when Paul Hart was in charge of the academy, when the likes of Jermaine Jenas, Michael Dawson, Wes Morgan and Andy Reid burst onto the scene. Lewis McGugan, James Perch, Matt Thornhill and Brendan Moloney have been more recent graduates of the set-up. Now Doughty is hopeful that another generation of talent is poised to have an impact. "The players we have coming through the ranks now, in the under-16 and above age groups, look to be the best crop we have had since I have been at the football club," said Doughty. "We are seeing a lot of them gaining international recognition at junior levels and we are battering teams, including Premiership academy sides. "Obviously these players develop to varying degrees. "And you don't want to single out individuals, because they all come through at different rates. "But the encouraging thing is that there is a group of them." Forest may not be certain which of the group will develop into stars of the future, but they remain convinced that the current junior sides will be a source of fresh talent. "It is not just one Jenas in there," said Doughty. "There is a group of them coming through and we are confident we have a very special group on our hands. "I think possibly next season we might start to see one or two of them coming through. If not next season, maybe the year after. It looks very exciting." And Doughty is encouraged by the revival in form shown by McGugan in recent weeks. The midfielder took his tally to seven goals in eight games with a truly breathtaking strike against Ipswich last weekend. And Doughty said: "He is now fulfilling the potential that everyone thought he had when he was 16. It is good to see." Can you wait that long for success Dave? Up the Blades!!!! Good luck to all our teams this weekend. Terry red&black 39
