3 Good afternoon, and welcome to Walton Lane for our Sussex County League Division Three fixtures against Ferring (Dec 20) and Billingshurst(Jan 3). We extend a warm welcome to our visitors who have made the journey across the county for this afternoon s game, and to the respective match referees, Steve Baker, from Brighton, and Kevin Dawson from Slinfold. As you may have guessed, these notes form part of a combined match programme due to early Christmas printing deadlines. It was important for us to get back to winningwayshavinglostabitofmomentum in the league with three defeats in the last four prior to our 5-1 win here against Burgess Hill & Hurst Albion to keep the pressure on at the top of the Division 3 table. The game included goals from leading goal scorer, Dave Storey who now has 13 for the season and Kieran Hartley, in what was sadly Kieran s final game for the club, prior to his transfer to Division 1 neighbours, Chichester City. This was Kieran s second spell at the club after an interim period at Sidlesham, and he proved invaluable in our West Sussex Premier Division winning campaign last season, with his pace and skill causing defenders all sorts of problems, and ending our top scorer with 23 goals in 22 appearances. This term his return has been equally impressive with 10 strikes from 11 games, so perhaps little wonder there s been interest in him from higher up the pyramid and with age on his side, if he displays a similar attitude then he could go higher still. Ironically, Kieran works for manager Andy Probee s landscaping business so is probably fortuitous the gaffer hasn t shown him his P45, too!! In all seriousness, while it s disappointing to lose a player of Kieran s quality, we wish him well at Chi and thank him for his telling contribution here at Walton Lane. There s also been change amongst the ranks at Billingshurst, with Mark Betts taking over from Paul Cooper and assistant Steve Barrow who made the move up to Division 1 and take on the challenge at Crawley Down Gatwick all this following after our 5-2 Division 3 cup victory in November. Billingshurst suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat at Sidlesham earlier in the month but I believe managed to keep hold of the majority of the squadthathasgotthemofftoastrongstart, and of course, beat us 1-0 in the reverse fixture at the Jubilee Fields in October. Ferring meanwhile have found it hard going after management change in the close season themselves - with a completely different squad to the one which earned them the runners-up spot in 2013/14. I don t think anyone would have expected us tocomeawaywithan8-0openingdaywinat Glebelands that did wonders for our confidence, but no doubt knocked Ferring s. However at the time of writing, they have taken four points from the last two games a 6-4 win against Clymping followed by a 3-3 draw at Roffey in a game they would have wonbutforalastminuteequaliser. Withthetablelookingasitdoeswiththetop five or six all vying for position, it certainly makes for an intriguing run-in, with Sidlesham to play twice (if you re reading this versus Billingshurst then, weather permitting, we should already know the outcome to one); leaders Langney Wanderers twice, and a visit to Southwick. Frank Antony s improving reserves wrap up their year with a trip to Billingshurst today (Dec 20), and aren t in action again until the second week of January. 5 Sussex County Football League Division 3 By ALAN PRICE Kieran Hartley s final appearance in a Bosham shirt prior to his transfer to Chichester City saw not only a goal for the departing front man, but a resounding team performance, which moved the Robins back to second in the table just a point behind leaders Langney Wanderers. Bosham were in front after just five minutes when Matt Docherty popped up to give the hosts the perfect start as they looked to bounce back after the previous weeks demise in the cup. The cold failed to put off the fans that gave their approval and were expectant for more. The Blues did their best to try and find a way back into the game and the likes of Oliver Lambert and Ed Bartram asked probing questions of the Robins defence, but Graeme Dowden, Ricky Mullen and Docherty wereinnomoodtoletthemwinthe battle and, just after the half hour, the reds doubled their advantage. This time, Marco Giambelardini showed his class to finish expertly leaving keeper, James McKemey, frustrated between the sticks as Bosham s dominance began to bear fruit towards the interval. Further chances came as both Hartley and Dave Storey tested McKemey but the Hurst keeper did enough to prevent further damage and see the teams into the interval with Bosham firmly in the ascendancy. More goals were sure to come and the management were ever hopeful of a resounding score line at full time. Ten minutes had passed when Bosham further extended their advantage through substitute, Jake Lafferty. Hispresence,onathalftimeforAlex Barnes, increased the attacking strength and assured finish was all that was required to almost end the match as a contest. Hartley then grabbed his seemingly regular goal - this time on the hour, priortochrisgrantstrokinginaspot kick to end Bosham s chances of another clean sheet. Late on Storey curled in a superb goalfromthirtyyardsthatflewinoff the post with keeper McKemey well beaten, to add the gloss to the result, and three points firmly in the bag. 22 Club President, Bob Probee continues his look through the club archives - this week, we take a look back at the postwar years- between The war years ( ) put an end to organised local football and although some leagues resumed immediately after the war, The Chichester & District League did not re-form until The final table of that season shows that the first post-war champions were Portfield A (reserves) who also won the Chichester Charity Cup. It was a good season for Portfield as their first team won the West Sussex League and Benevolent Cup (now the Malcolm Simmonds Memorial Cup). Portfield were of course to amalgamate with Chichester City in At the end of the season Bosham were to withdraw from the League and did not resume competetive football until when they entered the Bognor & District League.
