3 Good afternoon, and welcome to Walton Lane for today s Southern Combination Football League, Division Two fixture against Cowfold. We extend a warm welcome to the visiting players, officials and supporters, and to match referee, Ian Moore, from Angmering. The games continue to come thick-and-fast with Tuesday night s fantastic win at Billingshurst our fifth game in eleven days with Graeme Dowden s second-half double chalking up our third 2-0 away win on the spin. Our victory at the Jubilee Fields also marked Billinghurst s first defeat of 2016 ending a run of eight games unbeaten and now puts us in touching distance of a higher place in the Division 2 table which our performances of late have warranted. Today sees the first of back-to-back League fixtures against Cowfold ironically the last team to defeat Billingshurst, way back on December 28. Ant Parsons side have taken the step up to Southern Combination football very much in their stride, following promotion from the West Sussex Premier Division last year currently second in the Division 2 table in their maiden season at the higher level. They are a club who we know a little bit about, having faced them in our West Sussex Premier title-winning campaign of 2013/14. They arrive at Walton Lane on the back of a thumping 10-0 win against basement side, Hustpierpoint, with Nigel Smith and Michael Brownlee both notching hat-tricks in the drubbing. We make the return fixture on Thursday, April 28 (6.30pm k.o) thankfully the last of our less-regular midweek games, coming as a result of a disruptive winter and multiple postponements. Sandwiched in between the Cowfold encounters, is our eagerly awaited Division 2 Cup semi-final against Montpelier Villa, at Steyning Town FC on Tuesday night (April 26), 7.30pm k.o. It s a cup we re looking to retain as winners of the old Division 3 competition from last season, with the other semi-final being competed between League title challengers, AFC Varndeanians, and Ferring. While we re now in a good run of form, continuing to fight for every available point - realistically we d need the likes of Varndean to slip up to get us close to topspot, so the cup represents a great opportunity for us to end the season on a high, with cup semi-finals under lights always a special occasion. No doubt Montpelier Villa will have their own aspirations with manager, Bill Clifford an interested spectator at Billingshurst on Tuesday night. If the last league game between the sides at the start of April is anything to go by, then we re in for a treat! Arguably one of the games of the season, the Robins raced into a 4-0 lead at the Falmer Sports Complex, only for Villa to incredibly fight back to 4-4, before our evergreen assistant boss, Neil Redman, pops up with the winner right at the death! All at Bosham Football Club would like to wish Life President, Dick Doncaster, a very happy 80 th birthday, for Monday. Dick has devoted the best part of four decades of his life to our club - who alongside wife, Gerry, pulled us through some challenging times during that period, while also enjoying some of our more recent successes the very least their efforts over the years certainly deserve. 5 Southern Combination Football League Division 2 By Alan Price Ryan Hillier snatched a late equaliser for Bosham to scramble a point from this week s encounter that could have seen Upper Beeding maintain their title push and halt Bosham s progress after two good wins during the week. Both teams started brightly but chances were few and far between. Ben Whales looked sharp for the yellows but even he was wayward with the opportunities that came his way. Bosham then had a good penalty shout turned down by referee, Neal Saxton, but shortly after the half hour Bosham were awarded a spot kick when Lee Trower handled in his own area. Marco Giambelardini duly dispatched the penalty to give the reds the lead and heap the pressure on the yellows. Upper Beeding then had a period of pressure and from a corner, Danny Geard headed in to draw the sides level, right on half time. This would set up the game beautifully for the second period with Bosham no doubt determined to re-capture the lead they had already held. The striker was afforded far too much room approaching the reds box and had all the time to pick his spot with a sublime finish. The game really opened up after this with both sides trading blows but no goals to speak of. Bosham management were looking worried as time went by and necessary substitutes were brought on in the shape of Dave Storey, Louis Bell and Graeme Dowden. This certainly seemed to improve the Robins that looked much more dangerous and their adventurous play was rewarded in the eighty eighth minute when Alex Barnes played an exquisite ball into Hillier s path and the striker did the rest to the delight of both players and supporters. Moments later Dowden brought the very best out of stand-in Beeding keeper Tim Tapscott, who just managed to fingertip his effort onto the bar when it seemed destined for the top corner. Beeding held on somewhat nervously, to come away from the game with a point leaving Bosham to wonder what might have been. 17 Bosham Football Club would like to wish Life Member, Dick Doncaster, a very happy 80 th birthday! For more than 40 years, Dick has given up his time for Bosham Football Club, turning his hand to numerous roles within the club, from Chairman to barman and most things in between - as often the case in the world of non-league football. Dick s wife Gerry seen below preparing for another raffle draw (!) also gave us many years of support, acting as club Treasurer and now Vice President and Life Member - even last week, Gerry was still making sandwiches for the players after the game! Dick who turns 80 on Monday - has overseen the club through difficult times when the alternative was to fold, but we ve come a long way since, and are delighted that he has been able to enjoy some of our more recent successes, both on and off the field. Both Dick and Gerry s service for the club was acknowledged at the start of the 2014/15 season, with it being unanimously agreed that our clubhouse bar was renamed The Doncaster Lounge ; while Dick was also amongst the final nominees at this year s Chichester Observer Community Awards for his contribution to the club.
