4 4 With Horsham not in action, Lancing moved four points clear at the top of the table after beating in-form Chichester City at Culver Road. Dan Hegarty cancelled out Richard Greenfield s opener as Chi went into half time on level terms. However, Ross Adams and Will Berry went on to score for Ash Bailey s side in the second half as they won 3-1. Fourth hosted third in the table as Eastbourne Town made the trip to Newhaven, where Town moved within a point of Horsham after edging a five-goal thriller. Jake Buss saved a Wes Tate penalty early on, but only for Eastbourne to go ahead six minutes in through Dan Bolwell. Tate then made it 2-0 at the break, before Ryan Knight halved the deficit midway through the second period. Brett Patton then made it 3-1, before Connor Sidwell s late effort set up a tense finish, but Town held on to win. Mark Bennett s first game in charge of Pagham proved to be a tale of two halves, but it was Worthing United who came from 2-0 down to win at Nyetimber Lane. Lloyd Rowlatt and Dan Swain goals put the Lions in charge at the break, but only for Paul Elliott to halve the deficit on the hour. Pagham stayed 2-1 ahead going into the final ten minutes, but goals from Pat Rose and Elliott saw the Mavericks run out 3-2 winners. Horsham YMCA stay fifth after a 2-0 win against Wick & Barnham United. Phil Johnson gave YM a first half lead with a strike in added time, before Nick Sullivan sealed the points with an effort midway through the second half. Hassocks made it five straight wins after a 3-1 win at home to AFC Uckfield Town. Michael Death gave Hassocks the lead on the hour, with further goals from Phil Gault and Jonno Melia sealing the points. Drew Greenall struck late on for the Oaks for what proved to be a consolation goal. Eastbourne United made it back-to-back wins after a 2-0 win at home to Shoreham. Second half goals from Sam Crabb and Liam Baitup gave Tobi Hutchinson s side all three points. In the division s other match to have survived the weather, Ollie Moore and Ross Swaine scored for Loxwood in a 2-0 win at East Preston. With Storrington and Crawley Down s matches postponed, Haywards Heath Town are the new leaders at the top of the table after a 4-1 win at Midhurst & Easebourne. Joel Stevens drew the Stags level at the break, cancelling out Rob O Toole s opener, but only for Town to run out winners in the second half. Freddie Barker scored twice, with Callum Saunders completing the scoring late on. Southwick moved up to sixth after an emphatic win at Bexhill United. Andy McDowell and Ross Myers both scored twice for the Wickers, who also had Josh Newman on target in a 5-1 win at The Polegrove. Oakwood stay in fourth after a 3-1 win at home to Sidlesham. Clive Piller, Kieron Purkis and Marlon Maxwell got the goals for Mark Gilbert s side at Tinsley Lane. Steyning Town moved up to 13th after Craig Knowles stoppage time winner gave the Barrowmen a 1-0 win at Ringmer. Elsewhere, Ryan Morey gave Selsey the lead at bottom of the table Saltdean, but only for Dervantes Davis to strike early in the second half to earn the Tigers a point at Hill Park. In the division s other game, George Rudwick scored twice for Mile Oak as they beat Seaford Town 2-0 at Mile Oak Rec. v Saltdean United FC // Saturday 6 February
5 SCFL DIVISION ONE A dominative midfield display wasn t enough as the Lingers lost out to Oakwood. The game started with a touching display of Remembrance as captain Sam Cockerill laid a wreath of poppies in the centre circle and lead the teams in a minutes silence. The sides also wore poppies on their kits as a mark of respect to those who gave their lives. Lingfield dominated in the opening stretches and indeed for a lot of the game, and it took less than 10 minutes for Kerran Boylan to tap in the first goal thanks to good work from Romaine Atkinson. Unfortunately, just a few minutes later it was even again as a fast Oakwood counter met the onrushing Daniel Smith, leading to the ball flicking into the air wildly and landing in the back of the home net. The rest of the half followed a similar pattern with the Lingers enjoying large periods of chances and possession, and the visitors occasionally looking dangerous on the counter. Despite this, just 15 minutes into the second half it was the away side that took the lead, as their number 9 headed in at the near post. You could count the number of genuine Oakwood chances on one hand and yet just moments later they had a third, as Daniel Smith s scuffed clearance in the wet allowed Oakwood to cross and tap in again. Insult was added to injury as Christian Londoño, arguably Lingfield s best creator in the second half had to limp off injured 20 minutes from the end. Oakwood s confidence swelled and they began to create more and in the fourth minute of extra time the away number 7 (whose presence on the pitch was dubious considering some of the challenges he d made throughout the game) found himself through. He calmly rolled in the fourth and final goal, leaving the Lingers feeling very hard done by indeed. By Sam Freebody Saturday 6 Febraury // v Saltdean United FC

9 9 Saltdean United are a club that have always had high ambitions both on and off the field and not so long ago were one of the leading clubs in Sussex. Originally formed in 1966, the club started life in the local Brighton Saturday League and gradually moved up their divisional structure over the years. Following the acquisition of their current ground, Hill Park the club joined Division 3 of the Sussex County League in 1984/85, finishing third in its first season. Promotion to Division 2 and senior football came in 1988/89 when they finished champions. The next seven seasons were spent there, with the Tigers eventually winning Division 2 in 1995/96 with games to spare. Promotion to Division 1 saw the clubhouse completely revamped and floodlights installed the first Sussex County League club to invest in the impressive Musco system from the USA - still one of the best lighting systems in the County League today. With financial support behind them, the Tigers quickly established themselves as a force in the top division, finishing 4th in their inaugural season and reaching the final of the Sussex Senior Cup; losing to St. Leonards by the odd goal. In 1998/99 the club finished 2nd, and 3rd in 1999/2000 when they also lifted the John O Hara Cup, beating Burgess Hill Town after extra time in a thrilling match at Three Bridges. Over the next two seasons however, the club s fortunes changed dramatically. Proposed development work to Hill Park failed to materialise; funding was substantially reduced, and this, combined with significant changes both on and off the pitch, saw the Tigers fall to 16th position, with relegation to Division 2 following in 2001/02. This was the first time in the club s history that it had suffered relegation. Despite finishing in 5th position in their first season back in Division 2, this could not be sustained and the following seasons saw the club finish consistently in the lower half of the division. They were relegated to Division 3 at the end of 2006/07 where they were to spend the next five seasons. 2010/11 saw the 1st XI lift the Division 3 Challenge Cup and in 2011/12 they maintained their momentum by winning the Vernon Wentworth Cup and gaining promotion back into Division 2 and senior football. That season also saw the 2nd XI come runners up in their league, gaining promotion to the SCFL Reserve Section Premier Division quite a feat for a Division 3 reserve team! Saltdean United continue to run youth teams for all ages and in 2005 were awarded FA Charter Standard status in recognition of the club s organisation and how it is run at all levels; particularly in relation to youth football. Work on the creation of a third pitch Hill Park for mini-soccer was completed in time for the commencement of the 2009/10 season. The main priorities of the club remain as follows: a) to improve the quality of football played throughout the entire club, b) to build a new clubhouse and dressing room facilities together with necessary ground improvements to meet the ever increasing requirements of the FA, and c) to improve both internal and external communications to reinforce a one club approach.
