A very warm welcome to the players, staff and supporters from The Blues from Fleet Town, we also welcome our three match officials. After three straight losses we got back to winning ways last Saturday securing all three points against Aylesbury United. During the match The Ducks goalkeeper sustained a freak accident when he broke his 5 th metatarsal, we wish him all the best and a speedy recovery. Tony Choules strengthened his squad bringing in Justin Thompson from Hadley where he made 27 appearances this season scoring 5 goals. Before this season we had played Fleet Town on 20 occasions, the first at home in 1973 in the FA Cup when we drew 1-1, we lost the replay 3-1 four days later. This season we visited Calthorpe Park on September 26 th, after losing the toss we played downhill in the first half conceding two goals in the final 5 minutes, on the hour mark Anthony Thomas came off the bench, one minute later we conceded our third with Fleet getting their fourth from the penalty spot seven minutes later. Macca was our man of the match making several crucial saves, he also saved a penalty save in the 68 th minute. On 81 minutes Anthony Thomas was dismissed for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity after he handled the ball on the goal line, this time Fleet Town scored their fifth from the penalty spot, with our heads down The Blues finished of their evening with their sixth on 89 minutes. We have now climbed to thirteenth in the table and with Tony strengthening our squad we are looking to push closer to the play-off positions. Let s all get behind the team and cheer them onto success before we make the short journey to Northwood FC next weekend.

A Brief History of Fleet Town FC Fleet Town FC was officially formed in 1890, making it the oldest sports club in the town. The centenary was celebrated in 1990 with a special Scroll being presented by the Football Association to the club, together with a commemorative plaque from the Hampshire FA. In its early years Fleet FC played at the bottom of the Views where Campbells Close is today. Later they moved to Watsons Meadow in Fleet Road, roughly opposite where Travis & Perkins now stands, at the station end of Fleet Road. It was during this time that a young, future Prime Minister, Clement Atlee played for the club, his aunt living in a house that backed onto this original ground. In 1923 Lord Calthorpe of Elvetham Hall made available the site of the present ground in Crookham Road, and the club moved to its new home playing their first match on 3rd March The ground was subsequently bequeathed to the District Council and later the Fleet Town Council, with the proviso that it would continue to be for the use of the Town s football club. In 1953 floodlights were installed for the first time. The club entered the Hampshire League in From then on Fleet Town FC gradually moved through the Divisions, eventually moving into the Wessex League for the 1989/90 season. After six years of steady progress, the club gained promotion to the Southern League as Wessex League Champions. In 1999/00, its fifth season in the Dr Martens Southern League the club finished bottom and returned to the Wessex League. Within a few seasons the club returned to the Southern League, winning promotion under Player/manager, Steve Beeks. Playing in the Ryman League the 2005/06 season began with a new management team of ex-england International Andy Sinton assisted by Steve Mellor. In their second season together this new team saw their

side top the table at Christmas before they finally finished in 5th place. In a pulsating play-off semi-final they lost 2-1 to Tooting & Mitcham, with the London side scoring twice in added-on time. The team also reached the final of the Hampshire County Cup, losing 2-1 to Aldershot, the game played at AFC Bournemouth. For season the Club were moved by the FA to the BGB Southern League, South & West Division, and again had a record breaking season. Right up until the last few games they were in with a chance of automatic promotion but eventually had to accept 2nd spot behind Farnborough. This however was their highest ever non-league finish and again played in front of record crowds. It was heartbreak in the play-offs though as the team again lost in the semi-final, this time to an injury time penalty that gave Uxbridge a 2-1 victory. Fleet also went their furthest in the FA Cup before losing 2-1 at Havant & Waterlooville in the 3rd Qualifying Round. Season 08/09 had the club on the move yet again with promotions/relegations elsewhere meaning that Fleet returned to the Ryman League, South Division. Andy Sinton s side again broke more records as the team won four cups, including the prestigious Hampshire Senior Cup when over 1,200 witnessed victory over VTFC at St Marys Stadium, Southampton, to send the cup to Fleet for the first time. In addition the team also won the Russell Cotes Cup, Aldershot Senior & North Hants cups. The FA Cup run again went to the 3rd Qualifying Round before losing 5-2 in a bruising encounter at AFC Totton. May 2010 brought major changes at the club with Chairman Graham Smith stepping down and this was shortly followed by manager Andy Sinton resigning to join AFC Telford United. For the new season Steve Mellor stepped into the Manager s shoes. A largely new Blues side

finished a credible 13 th. Season again saw Fleet Town move as they were switched back to the Southern League after a three year absence, this time placed in the Div One Central. However results were poor and after a run of defeats and exiting the major cup competitions Mellor left in November 2011 to be replaced by Craig Davis as player/manager. Despite some improved displays, the Blues faced relegation after ending the season in 21 st spot. However, due to circumstances elsewhere in the Football pyramid Fleet Town gained an FA reprieve and retained their place as a Southern League club, to play a 2 nd season in the Division One Central for season 2012/13. In July 2012 Steve Cantle became Chairman and with Davis bringing in a new back-room staff, and a host of new players, the club enjoyed an improved Southern League season, finishing with 4 teams behind them, in 18 th spot. Following the end of the season Fleet Town were again moved, this time within the Southern League to the Div One South & West. After several difficult seasons the 2015/16 season saw Fleet moved back to the Division One Central, and they enjoyed 2 successful seasons with league status retained and the winning of the Aldershot Senior Cup and the North Hants Senior Cup in The Club however suffered the devastating loss of Chairman Steve Cantle who died just before Christmas and manager Davis moved on in March. team of Steve Dormer and Andy Hunt , Fleets 16 th consecutive season at this level brings new challenges with the Club looking for stability and progress under the new management

IF there s one thing people in Non-League football like it s a good Budget chat. I m not talking about the red briefcase the Chancellor holds up outside Downing Street, but how much players are being paid. Or not being paid. It s very difficult to truly know who s got what. The managers who have got a decent pot of cash to splurge certainly don t like to tell you about it too much, even when it s obvious. And why wouldn t you play it down? No point setting yourself up for a fall. Because often the whispers won t be far away and you don t want to give the opposition anymore ammo than they will already have. (The caveat being Billericay, where owner Glenn Tamplin has been pretty open about their weekly spending). Then the managers who haven t got a lot will naturally want to tell everyone. Look at how well we are doing and I ve got no money! It s to be expected. I popped down to see Alan Dowson at Hampton & Richmond last week for a cuppa and a chat about all things at the Beveree and football in general. Dowson s side are unbeaten in 21 National League South games at the time of writing. The former Walton & Hersham and Kingstonian manager spoke about how much he loves winning and that the three points on a Saturday are what it s all about. Whatever your spending power. He said: If you re a manager, it doesn t matter what your budget is, how much money you ve got and we all lie, we all pretend we ve got the lowest budget. Managers will say to me and I ll say to them because I

lie as well that we ve got the lowest budget. Because it looks good! We all like to say we work on a shoestring, these people are only on a certain amount of money. We re all the bloody same, including me. But it doesn t matter how much you ve got, who you are, what your facilities are, you ve got to go and win a game of football on a Saturday. While money should talk, we ve all seen in football at every level that it isn t a guaranteed path to success. A few years ago Tunbridge Wells reached the FA Vase final at Wembley and managed to do it without paying their players. Guernsey don t either, and they ve had success. Or how about Corinthian-Casuals in the Bostik South promotion race. Last year they missed out on promotion to Step 3 in the play-off final but are faring well this year. The south-london club are a bastion to amateurism. I recently caught up with the manager James Bracken about how his remit is completely different from most managers in Non-League football. It has its pros, it has its cons, Bracken told me. In terms of pros I don t have anybody playing for me who doesn t want to. I know a lot of other players at other clubs who will openly say to me they don t respect their manager or agree with what he says or like the way he manages them. But they pick up their money, it helps them with their mortgage, they ve got kids to feed and it s almost a job lots of us have jobs we don t particularly enjoy and you have to do certain things to pay your bills at the end of the month. For a lot of players football becomes that. With us it s never that. Boys are here because they want to be here, they want to play football here and they want to win. You can get a lot more out of people with that kind of environment than the other.
