3 FROM THE EDITOR S DESK For the second season in succession, our FA Cup adventure starts with a visit from our local rivals BITTON AFC. Despite going through 2-0 last season, it was not one of our more convincing performances and our visitors gave us a difficult contest. We don t expect it to be any easier this afternoon, given the current strength of the Toolsta tion Western League, but we extend a warm welcome to The Ton and their fans. Should a replay be necessary, it will be on Tuesday 3 rd September, at the Recreation Ground, at 7.30pm. The winners of the tie will earn themselves 1,925 and will face an away trip to either Winchester City or Swindon Supermarine. That match also takes place this afternoon. Last Saturday we travelled to FLEET TOWN and already just two games into the new season, we were facing an injury crisis. With three recognised strikers/forwards missing, MARCUS DUHARTY, LIAM MONELLE & RYAN BATH, and new signing LEWIS POWELL a week or so away from starting, it was always going to be a difficult game. Defensively also, LEE MARSHALL was unavailable. Our new signing, THOMAS BANNERMAN-WILLIAMS also travelledaftermaking a substitute s debut against Merthyr Town. The introduction of LIAM MONELLE provided the spark we needed and his equaliser in the 80 th minute gave us a deserved point. The draw was just about right for both sides. TAUNTON TOWN are here on Tuesday(3 rd ), providing, of course, that neither side are involved in FA Cup replays. The Peacocks are hosting Bridgwater Town and that clash should provide the sort of attendance we can only dream about! We then take the short trip to CIRENCESTER TOWN on Saturday 7 th, who will provide us with another difficult test. It s a return home for JAMIE REID, who scored the winner for them last season when they opened the season at The Glass Consultants UK Stadium. Their last two games have seen them suffer surprise defeats, at home to Bridgwater (1-4) and at Swindon Supermarine (2-3). Three days later, (10 th ), we host a strong BRISTOL ROVERS X1 in a friendly. Manager John Ward has been struck with a raft of injuries since day one and he is anxious to bring players back as soon as possible, so this will give him the opportunity to assess match fitness for those players. The opening twenty minutes looked promising for us but when Fleet scored from their first real attack of the game, we lost our way. We clawed it back when substitute DAVE STONE levelled in the 67 th minute, and in the closing stages, both sides had the chances to have won it, but although we did finish under pressure. It proved to be a hardearned point. Monday s clash with a CLEVEDON TOWN side still looking for a win, ended goal-less, so they are still looking. Objectively, it was a very watered-down local derby with another poor gate. Even the usual Clevedon regulars did not seem to be there. So, on with the action then as we try to make FA Cup progress. 9 BITTON AFC Ex Mangotsfield United Youth team joint Manager, PAUL BRITTON is now in charge at Bitton AFC with John Lester assisting him. Paul was appointed in late May 2013 and follows his success last season with Oldland Abbotonians, who he led to 5 th place in the Toolstation First Division. BITTON AFC was founded in They played at the Recreation Ground on the outskirts of the village of Bitton, which lies on the A420 between Bath & Bristol. This has been their home ever since their formation, and the land was donated to the village by Trustees for the purpose of sporting activities. Before the Second World War, very little of the club s history exists. They began in the Bristol & East District League and they developed further teams as the years passed. From 1945, up until the late 1980s, limited success came their way, despite being managed by many fine managers and players. Bob Grimshaw, who played for the famous Bristol St. George team and ex-bristol City star Paul Cheeseley have both managed the club, who were founder members of the Avon Premier Combination. Fortunes changed for the better in 1989 when Martin Dyer became Manager, with the team playing in the Senior Division of the Bristol & District and after winning promotion two seasons in succession, the first team started in the Premier Division of the Bristol Premier Combination was a memorable campaign as the club won the GFA Senior Amateur Cup and finished Runners up in the Bristol Premier Combination. This success gave them promotion to the Gloucestershire County League. In , Bitton reached the GFA Trophy Final, only to lose narrowly 0-2 to Mangotsfield United, at Oaklands Park. They also finished as Runners-up in the Gloucestershire County League and they were promoted to the Western league First Division. After 7 seasons at this level, the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the Premier Division. They again reached the GFA Trophy final in but lost narrowly on penalties to Slimbridge. Over the last decade, the club has matched its playing performances with many off the pitch developments. A stand, seating 50 was built and covered accommodation for 150 was erected and in February 2001, floodlights were installed., which are up to Conference standard. The summer of 2004 also saw the building of a new dressing-room block, including a kitchen and boardroom, together with a floodlit multiple-use games area, The club s Junior section runs teams from 6-18 years and also two teams in the A division of the Bristol & District League, plus a 2 nd team in the Premier Division of the Bristol Premier Combination. The club s plans to improve the ground s facilities for the possibilty of Southern League football, continue. Their previous nine seasons at Western Premier Division level have seen them finish 8 th, 8 th, 8 th, 7 th, 1 st, 8 th 2 nd, 2 nd.& 7 th. Strong performances indeed, but despite being Champions and runners-up twice during the last five campaigns, they have not been quite ready, financially, for the next step. Whilst we have met once at the Recreation Ground (2003/04), this will be only the second time that Bitton AFC have made a competitive Cossham Street visit since we entered the Southern league. 10 INTRODUCING THE TON PAUL BRITTON MANAGER Paul has arrived from Oldland Abbotonians where he had success last season taking them to 5 th in Division One. He was, of course, at Mangotsfield a few seasons ago, in joint charge of our successful Youth side. He has brought several players to the club from Oldland, after several of last season s squad had moved on from the Recreation Ground. JOHN LESTER ASSISTANT MANAGER John was a Bitton player and Captain when the club played it s first game in the Toolstation league. He is a likeable character with vast experience in the game. After being manager last season, when Steve Fey left the club, he has stepped aside for 2013/14 and will help Paul Britton try and keep the club among the pacesetters. HANIN ROMHDANE 29 year old French-born midfielder, who had two spells with Clevedon Town, making his debut for them in October After being released by them, he returned to the London area. He made 35 (14) appearances for The Seasiders, scoring once. He made 6 appearances for The Field in 2008/09, and has been at the Recreation Ground for two seaons. Played against us when the clubs met in pre- season. Always gives 100%. DAN SPILL MIDFIELD 26 year old Dan has previously played for Oldland Abbots and Longwell Green. He has, of course, played for Mangotsfield in 2009/10 and made 32(5) appearances, scoring 5 goals. He joined us from Cutters Friday, played for the Reserves and made his first team debut against Wantage Town in September ROB SMITH DEFENDER Aged 26, Rob is another who has played for Mangotsfield, in 2009, after progressing from our Reserves. He made 21(6) appearances, scoring once after making his first-team debut against Yate Town in September Has since played for Almondsbury Town & Oldland Abbotonians. ROB MOORE DEFENDER Now 22, Rob also made his debut for Mangotsfield in 2009, after previously having been with Salisbury City. Over the course of two seasons, 2009/10 and 10/11, he made 45(6) appearances and scored two goals. EUGENE KEARY Aged 21, he spent last season with Oldland Abbotonians. In season 2010/11, he made 10 appearances for Mangotsfield United in the Southern League. CONOR BRITTON MIDFIELD 21 year old son of Manager Paul, and spent last season at Oldland Abbotonians. Was a member of Mangotsfield s successful Youth side and in 2009/10, he made 3(2) appearances for our First team. GEORGE LLOYD 20 year old who started at Bristol Rovers and has also played for Gloucester City & Oldland Abbotonians. TOM MORGAN MIDFIELD 26 year old who has joined from Oldland Abbotonians. JASON THATCHER MIDFIELD 23 year old who has played previously for Cadbury Heath & Oldland Abbotonians. JORDAN RICHARDS CENTRAL MIDFIELD 26 year old who has arrived from Oldland Abbotonians. 11 INTRODUCING THE TON STEVE JONES - DEFENDER This will be Steve s 8 th season at the Recreation Ground, where he has become a real fan s favourite. A good, tall, all-round defender who is always a threat from set-pieces. He has previously played for Taunton Town and Cadbury Heath. RYAN ASHWOOD MIDFIELD 19 year old who has played for Bristol City & Cheltenham Town Academy. ASHLEY BRYAN GOALKEEPER 25 year old who has played for Oldland Abbotonians and Bristol Manor Farm. CRAIG WILSON STRIKER 21 year old who has signed from Oldland Abbotonians. DANIEL DYKE DEFENDER 19 year old left-back who previously played for Bristol Academy. Bitton have played four league games in the Toolstation so far with their only win coming at the Recreation Ground against Radstock, 1-0. They lost 1-2 at home to Bridport, drew 0-0 at Bristol Manor Farm and went down 0-2 at Cadbury Heath. They won their Extra Preliminary Round tie 4-1 at Pewsey Vale, who are currently a Wessex League side. The Tools tation League Premier Division has seen a few changes this season as last season s champions, Bishop Sutton are now residing at The Creek, under the guise of Bristol Manor Farm. Manager LEE LASHENKO and several players have left Lakeview and moved down the Portway, as The Creek based side aim for promotion, following John Black leaving the club. Bitton too, have thoughts of playing at the higher level of Southern League and it is a big step for all of these clubs to compete financially. We ourselves know that only too well. However, there are others in the Tools tation League who might have promotion on their minds. Gillingham Town have already made their intentions clear and there will surely be a challenge from the likes of Andy Black s Cadbury Heath, Buckland Athletic and Street. The title race will be an interesting one and with so many local sides having made it to the Toolstation League in recent years, perhaps in the not too distant future, Mangotsfield United may well have some more local league rivals to play! 13 FA CUP - MOMENTS IN FOOTBALL This article contains rare archive photographs from the Press Association, many unseen for decades. They have been taken from the book 100 Years of Football, by ROBIN McKELVIE & JENNY McELVIE and we duly acknowledge their work and thank them for allowing their use. During the 1956 FA Cup Final, BERT TRAUTMANN, the Manchester City goalkeeper was injured whilst making a save at the feet of Birmingham City s Peter Murphy. He is seen being helped from the Wembley pitch by team-mates Dave Ewing and Bill Leivers. He perhaps entered folklore with his performance in the 3-1 Manchester victory. With 17 minutes remaining, he suffered a serious injury, but continued to play, making crucial saves to protect his team s lead. His neck was noticeably crooked as he collected his winner s medal, but three days later, an X-ray revealed it to be broken. Bernhard Carl Bert Trautmann, OBE, was born 22 nd October 1923, in Bremen, Germany. He joined the Luftwaffe early in the Second World War, serving a a paratrooper and fought on the Eastern front for three years, earning five medals which included an iron cross. After being transferred to the Western front, he was captured by the British. He was taken to a POW camp in Ashton-In-Makerfield, and refused an offer of repatriation. It was near the end of the War, but when released in 1948, he played as a goalkeeper for his local club, St. Helens Town. His performances earned him a favourable reputation, resulting in interest from Football League clubs. In 1949, he signed for First Division Manchester City. The club s decision to sign a former Axis paratrooper sparked protests, with 20,000 attending a demonstration. Over time, he gaimed acceptance through his performances playing all but five of the club s next 250 matches. Trautmann continued to play for City until 1964, making 545 appearances and after ending his playing career, he moved into management, first with lower-division sides in England & Germany, and later as part of a German Football Association Development scheme that took him to several countries, including Burma, Tanzania & Pakistan. In 2004, he was appointed an honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), for promoting Anglo-German understanding, through the sport of football. In 1999, he appeared on the BBC programme Timewatch a special called The Germans we Kept, recounting stories of German Prisoners of War who had decided to remain in this country. Bert sadly passed away on 19th July 2013, aged 89. FIELD REVIEW -7

14 VILLAGE GOSSIP The THREE-MATCH POOL will see some changes for the new season. To give everyone a better chance of winning, the minimum prize will be 100. As usual, you have to predict three scores correctly, and if there are no winners each week, it will roll over, BUT only until week 8. If there are no winners after the eighth week, then the tickets will go into a draw and three prizes of 500, 200 and 100 will be drawn. Only those who enter on week Eight will be eligible. OUR NEW Commercial Manager SHAUN HONOUR, has been a very busy man since he came to the club and he has already lined up another big DARTS event at the club. On Sunday 29 th September, the two-time PDC World Champion and current World ranked number three ADRIAN Jackpot LEWIS will be giving a darts exhibition. In his last major tournament, Lewis made his way to the final of The World Matchplay, losing to World number one, Phil Taylor, averaging just under 106 and hitting 19 maximums! The event which is Lewis s first in Bristol, starts at 8pm and will also feature leading MC PAUL STARR, and a full stage set. Bruistol s very own PDC star STEVE BROWN will now also be appearing and will go head-to-head with Lewis over the best of 11 legs. Tickets are on sale now, priced at 20 and can be bought from the club on (24 hour answering machine) or by contacting SHAUN on ALSO on the 29 th September, WRESTLING comes to the Glass Consultants UK Stadium. CSF WRESTLING are hosting the Professional Wrestling Show and two wrestling legends from the World of Sport glory days are set to collide and settle some old scores! Bristol s own PETER COLLINS faces Luton s JOHNNY KIDD. Collins, a former CSF Heavyweight champion, now resides in Stratford upon Avon and last entered the ring 6 years ago. London born Kidd has also had success, in the ring, winning several belts over the years. The bout will be contested over six rounds of five minutes under traditional British Wrestling rules of two falls or a knockout. THOMAS BANNERMAN-WILLIAMS is a new signing for us and recently made a subsitute s appearance for us at Cinderford when we met Merthyr Town. He finished last season playing for Frome Town and started pre-season at Bath City. He also appeared for Keynsham Town in the To olstation League. The front page of the Sunday Independent was all about WAYNE THORNE s (pictured) recent car crash and it was good to hear that he was recovering well after being in a coma. We all wish him well and the speediest of recoveries. Early season results in the Calor League Division One South have certainly been interesting with a lot of goals being scored. PAULTON ROVERS have soared to the top of the table bagging 18 goals in their four games and on Monday they inflicted Shortwood United s first defeat by winning 6-3 at Meadowbank. BRIDGWATER TOWN were held at Fairfax Park to a 1-1 draw by the highlyrated WIMBORNE TOWN, but the Robins are 2 nd under the managerial duo of Richard Fey and Geraint Bater. There s a few ex-mangos playing for them as well. YATE TOWN are unbeaten after four games, and they find themselves in 4 th place thanks to their strong striking duo of Ricky Hulbert and Lewis Haldane. The only other unbeaten side are SWINDON SUPERMARINE, who are 3 rd and they defeated Cirencester Town 3-2. The two Surrey sides met on Monday at Godalming, with the Gs winning by the only goal against The Sweeney. I have yet to find out why GUILDFORD CITY have that nickname, but it s one of the best I ve come across. It does look as though both of these Surrey sides will find it hard going this season. Don t forget MERTHYR TOWN, of course. They won 3-0 at Cinderford on Monday, but it s probably not the first time that a team has won an away match at home!! It looks like being an even more competitive division in 2013/14. Plenty of goals in the early games and some tough games to come for The Field. If we have any realistic ideas of finishing in a playoff spot, then we are going to have to find the net on a more regular basis! FIELD REVIEW -8

17 PHOTOCALL ALEX KITE ALEX KITE DEFENDER Sponsored by PAT McKEOWN 24 year old Alex signed for The Field in early June 2013 from Chippenham Town. He came through the ranks at Bristol Rovers, making the breakthrough into the first team squad in December After loan spells at Oxford City, Weston-super-Mare, Gloucester City, Paulton Rovers and two spells at Chippenham Town, he was released at the end of the 2009/10 campaign, in a mass clearout which saw fourteen other players let go. After leaving Rovers, he signed for The Bluebirds in the summer of 2010 and made over 100 appearances during three seasons for them. FIELD REVIEW - 9

18 WHAT THE PAPERS SAY More quotes now from the back end of last season: THEY (KIDDERMINSTER) ARE TOTALLY TO BLAME. THE GAME SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALL TICKET AND IT WASN T POLICED INSIDE THE GROUND. The words of Stockport County chief executive Ryan McKnight, as quoted in the Daily Telegraph on 22 April 2013, after a pitch invasion by Stockport hooligans caused the Kidderminster v Stockport game to be held up for 30 minutes. A Kidderminster player was punched by an away fan & the referee took both teams off the pitch while order was restored. This crowd trouble (at a non-league game too) was not what we all wanted to read about after one or two other more high profile incidents last season, but there might be some blame on both sides here. Rumour was that KHFC did not have any police at the game (to reduce costs, but later 30 officers did arrive) & only a limited number of stewards were on hand, because their information from trusted sources was that no trouble from Stockport fans was expected. Come the day, over 2,000 Stockport fans descended on the West Midlands town & clearly, some of Rent-A-Mob attended with them. But as for Mr McKnight s comment above, you can t blame Kidderminster for all the nonsense. It wasn t the home fans who ran on to the pitch & attacked the home players, it was the AWAY fans and even more ironic was the fact that none of the Stockport board members turned up because their relationship with the SCFC fans is/was poor & most of the fans want them out anyway! Stockport lost the game 4-0 & were relegated to Blue Square North as a result & when you read the views of the Kiddie fans on various forums afterwards, their response was fairly predictable Good riddance! KENNY DOES LIKE TO RAMBLE ON A BIT LIKE DAVID BRENT IN THE OFFICE, The words of Celtic boss Neil Lennon, as quoted in The Sun on 27 April 2013, after he compared Kilmarnock boss Kenny Shiels to TV show The Office s David Brent character. This all came about after Shiels labelled Celtic as Paranoid FC after Neil Lennon had claimed that it was abysmal that none of his players had been short-listed for Scottish PFA Player of the Year. Just 2 comments from me: (1) I never did get The Office at all. For me, it was a totally unfunny, over-rated programme right from the start, but I appreciate others must have liked it, and (2) what does Neil Lennon want, jam on it? Did he honestly expect every single trophy that there is in Scottish football to go his team s way? They may have been crowned Champions Elect as far back as last August because, without Rangers, they had absolutely no opposition to beat for the title whatsoever but that doesn t mean they ll have had the PFA Player of the Year in their midst as well! So take a bow, SPL Player of the Year Michael Higdon of Motherwell for proving that Celtic can t expect to have their own way about everything North of the Border. IT IS THE MOST AMAZING DAY OF MY FOOTBALLING CAREER, AND THIS TOPS ANYTHING I HAVE EVER DONE. The words of Newport County manager Justin Edinburgh, as quoted on the BBC website on 5 May 2013, after his side had beaten Wrexham 2-0 in the Conference Play-Off Final at Wembley to return the South Wales side to the Football League after a 25-year absence. Considering Edinburgh won both the FA Cup & the League Cup as a Tottenham player years ago, then that s quite a statement proving that it s not always about top-level football all the time. But good luck to Newport this season, and if nothing else, the fact that they re just over the Severn Bridge gives Bristol Rovers an unexpected new rivalry this season and a new ground (Rodney Parade) for Gas fans to visit! We have a few memories of our own of Newport here at MUFC; some pre-season friendlies here & there & two memorable FA Cup ties as well, losing 5-2 over there in & then winning 6-3 there in , when DAVID SEAL bagged 4 goals in one of our most memorable FA Cup ties ever! Looking back through my old programmes, I recall watching the old Almondsbury Picksons v Newport AFC (as they were then), back in December 1989 in a game that ended 1-1 in front of a gate of around 600 (mostly Welsh) fans & the goals came from Timmy Mayes (80) & Chris Lillygreen (86) for Newport both former MUFC players of course! (But more on that later on ) AND IN CASE YOU DIDN T KNOW ALREADY, the winners of today s match will travel to the winners of today s WINCHESTER CITY v SWINDON SUPERMARINE tie in the next round of the FA Cup & that will be played on Saturday 14 September 2013 at 3pm. THE BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND saw us bag 2 x 1-1 draws, away at FLEET TOWN & then at home to CLEVEDON TOWN. I wasn t at Fleet, but I hear it was a fair result, as was the Clevedon game as well last Monday when we only seemed to get going after falling behind. LIAM MONELLE s cracking volley saved our bacon as the lads rolled their sleeves up in the final 20 minutes or so to battle back for a deserved draw in the somewhat unusually warm Bank Holiday heat. It s still early days, of course, in the Calor League, as teams begin to settle & our mixed start could have been far worse, so there is still plenty to build on & plenty of games in which to do it. Onwards and upwards! BUT BACK TO TODAY AND THE FA CUP. Despite it being treated with some contempt in recent years by many of the big boys at the top, the FA Cup is still the Greatest Cup Tournament In The World & that s still so very, very true at our level as well as at league clubs like City & Rovers. FA Cup runs mean good prize money, much local publicity & and at our level, if you can keep the run going, then regular games every 2 weeks in September & October could also bring in huge attendances & brilliant gate receipts. True, people often say that your league form suffers if you get bogged down in a good FA Cup run, and yes, there is some truth in that, but you can only take each game as it comes & do your best in each one. Locally, our rivals at YATE, CLEVEDON & PAUL TON have all reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup in the last few years & have had their 5 (or should that be 90?) minutes of fame especially Paulton, who drew the biggest game they could possibly have had (at home to Norwich), and they ended up live on TV as well, earning a 6- figure sum in the process. We had some great Cup runs in the early Noughties & we reached the 4 th Qualifying Round a number of times, but we always failed to overcome that last hurdle. I feel sure that we WILL get there one day. Will that be THIS season? Next season? Five years time? Who knows? But a win over BITTON today will at least kick-start the dream once again PLEASE! NOW DON T FORGET THAT AN EXTRA FIXTURE has recently been added to our schedule & that comes up on Tuesday 10 September 2013 at 7.45pm when we entertain a BRISTOL ROVERS XI. The game has been arranged to help some of Rovers injured players get back to full fitness & from our point of view, it s a useful exercise to play against professional players now & again. 24 THAT WAS THE MONTH THAT WAS! Time now for a nostalgic look back at a particular month in recent or not-so-recent years & see how we fared in that period. Today we look at AUGUST MUFC RESULTS IN AUGUST MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 3, RACING CLUB WARWICK 3 DMLWD CIRENCESTER TOWN 0, MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 4 DMLWD SUTTON COLDFIELD TOWN 2, MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 1 DMLWD MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 1, WESTON-SUPER-MARE 3 DMLWD THE SEASON OVERALL This was our 2 nd season in the Dr Martens League Western Division, but we found it difficult to maintain the standards we had achieved in our inaugural season as a Southern League club (5 th place), largely due to various long-term injuries, numerous cup runs & general inconsistencies. Nevertheless, after being in the bottom half of the table for much of the campaign, a good run from March 2002 onwards, which included no less than FOUR successive away wins, hoisted us up to 7 th place, which, overall, wasn t bad at all in the end, THE GAMES IN QUESTION Firstly, in August 2001, we played a number of pre-season games, which included 6-1 v Brislington, 2-0 at Cadbury Heath, 3-2 v Backwell United & 2-0 v Bath city, before officially kicking off at home to un-fancied RACING CLUB WARWICK & that fixture amazingly ended up as a 3-3 draw, which, based on the previous season s form, we clearly didn t anticipate! First game or not, the RCW boys shook us all by taking a 2-0 interval lead at Cossham Street as MUFC struggled in the sun. For the record, our line-up v RCW was as follows: DAVE DYSON, DEAN PENDTY, DANNY HALLETT, SCOTT HENDY, HADLEIGH WINTER, GARETH LOYDON, ADAM SIMS, STEVE CAMPBELL, ROBBIE CLARIDGE, DAVID SEAL, & NICK BROOKS. SUBS WHO CAME ON: DARREN EDWARDS & TOM LEWIS. We often reminisce in the FIELD REVIEW about when DAVID SEAL, DARREN EDWARDS & ROBBIE CLARIDGE scored goals for fun & when our midfield was dominated by the likes of NICK BROOKS, who was probably one of the best midfielders we ve ever had. There are so many other great names, great stalwarts in that line-up & it s hard to believe that this is all 12 years ago now! Anyway, new keeper DAVE DYSON had a nightmare start & unfortunately, was at fault for all 3 RCW goals, as we dropped points against a side we expected to beat. From 0-2 down, it went to 1-3, but we clawed our way back into the game with ROBBIE CLARIDGE, DAVID SEAL & STEVE CAMPBELL netting the goals to help us salvage a point. We had to do it with 10 men too, after HADLEIGH WINTER got himself sent off. Three nights later & despite a few injuries already piling up, we ran out 4-0 winners away to CIRENCESTER TOWN, a game which saw DARREN EDWARDS grab a hat-trick, with HADLEIGH WINTER getting the other one. That should have given us some confidence to do well away to SUTTON COLDFIELD TOWN at the start of the Bank Holiday weekend, but it wasn t to be & we crashed 2-1 to the Midlands side. An own goal by DANNY HALLETT (54) set the home team up for a win & when Mark Bellingham made it 2-0 (81), we all thought the game was lost, but SCOTT HENDY got one back on 83 minutes, just to keep us on our toes in the hope of an equaliser. Bank Holiday Monday then saw us lose again, as we flopped big time at home to WESTON-SUPER- MARE. In a proverbial game of 2 halves, we all felt good at the break as DAVID SEAL had put us ahead right on half time. Unfortunately, after the break, we collapsed through Weston s pressure & it was no surprise to see Jody Bevan (49 & 53) & Ryan King (82) wrap up the points in front of a gate of 275. 27 THE WORLD OF SOCCER Welcome once again to THE WORLD OF SOCCER, the column that brings you news stories from around the globe. Nowadays, the only news out of SYRIA is of war, death, strife & despair, but even then, there is still a place for football, as former Arsenal & England star Martin Keown found out last April when he found himself inspired by brave Syrian kids on a football trip. Here s what he said to the media at the time: This week, I ve been out in the Za atari refugee camp in Jordan with Arsenal & Save The Children. There s a base camp been set up there for Syrian refugees arriving to escape the shelling and shooting. There are 150,000 families there now with another 7,000 arriving each week. Arsenal have a partnership with Save The Children, so I was out there doing some football coaching on the pitch the charity have built in the middle of the camp. It was a very moving & powerful experience, meeting these kids who have come from the battleground to the playground. The children I was working with were between 12 & 16 years old & what they have been through is unthinkable. Many have seen their families blown apart & seen things no-one should have to see. One boy who I talked to told me that he spent each day in Syria wondering how long he is going to live. Now in Jordan, he said he wakes up thinking about having fun, playing football & seeing his friends. Life for these guys was only about survival of the fittest, but now the charity is trying to help prepare them for coming into a normal society. A lot of them have issues with aggression & other forms of behaviour because of what they have been through, but football can help with that. Playing in England, you can lose perspective on just how big a tool football is in people s lives. It creates discipline, respect and an element of fun. You see how it brings people together & works as a tool to put basics back into their behaviour & get their lives back together. For some, their natural way to resolve conflict is to pick up a gun & shoot. This will hopefully help to change that. It made me realize too how much football helped form my personality by giving me structure. Your personality comes out on the football pitch - are you a creative player, a workhorse, a brave defender? They are all football mad here & despite basic sanitary conditions, they are lucky enough to have satellite dishes powered by car batteries, so they could watch the Champions League this week. They are crazy about it. They were so grateful for the shirts & balls Arsenal took out for them. It was a truly humbling experience coming out here & listening to some of the stories of hardship from children so young. The strength & resilience that they show, having been through so much, is an inspiration. Save The Children, the UN & the Jordanian authorities are doing a great job providing food, water & learning materials for these children. Obviously, there s plenty more to be done An interesting story now from April in HOLLAND where police investigated events into the late season game between ADO Den Haag & Feyenoord, which saw 16 fans hospitalized. Crowd trouble? No, not this time, even though the clubs are geographical rivals as the cities of The Hague & Rotterdam are close together. No, reports said at the time that 16 ADO fans needed hospital treatment after falling ill during the game, which ADO won 2-0. Seems that tests later carried out by doctors led to the conclusion that the fans were suffering the giddy effects of ingesting a hefty amount of marijuana, believed to have come from eating space cakes served up in the hospitality areas of the stadium! ADO officials insisted that they had no idea how the trippy delights found their way into the executive areas in the first place, as they weren t on the menu, but they did say that corporate boxes on matchdays were the responsibility of the companies that hire them out & not the club themselves. And finally today, a story I spotted in the Metro a few months ago it said that a goalkeeper playing for Pirin FC in BULGARIA was sent off by the referee after he thumped a team-mate! The player s manager said afterwards, I have no idea why he did it. Well, actually, we did make a mistake & they scored a goal, but even so, this is unacceptable. Too right, but I m sure Pirin FC learned from it and moved on, just as a certain club in these parts did last season too! More from the WOS again soon. FIELD REVIEW -16

29 COMICAL red and yellow cards are becoming more and more common and considering our love for football funnies here at The NLP, long may that continue! Referees are letting little slide these days. The book is coming out for increasingly bizarre incidents, there's little place for comedy where the men in black are concerned. So in the aftermath of one the more strange red cards on record last weekend, we thought we would chart the very best or very worst of the ones that have got on the wrong side of referees. Now that's a mis-timed tackle! Louis Smith wasn't having the best of days last Saturday. Left out of the AFC Croydon side to face Colliers Wood in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round, at 5-2 down there was little he could do when he got the call to come on finally came after 66 minutes. Referees don't like these thermal cycling shorts that seem to be in fashion, and whistle blower Jack Ohene didn't believe Smith when he said he had taken them off when the black ones he warmed up in didn't match the club s maroon shorts. Smith protested that he'd removed the offending undergarment... by not so subtly proving it! Sent off for flashing an official, his game was over before it started. Pires booked for taking the... When you've got to go you've got to go. Welling's Loick Pires couldn't wait in September 2011 during the Wings Conference South clash with Woking. He jumped over the barrier in the first half and legged it into the supporters' toilets for a comfort break. His return was greeted with a yellow card for re-entering the field of player without permission. It left likeable Pires feeling rather flushed! Borat blunder is not niiiice! Ashley Vickers isn't a man to be messed with. So when a fan ran onto the pitch wearing nothing but a green mankini made famous by Borat and the stewards can't catch him, the 6'2 powerhouse is going in! The 38-year-old Dorchester player manager knew the importance of three points against Havant back in March 2011, and time was running out. So Vickers took down the illusive intruder and presented him to the club's security only to be rewarded with a red card. It beggars belief, he grumbled. The stewards actually thanked me! It's a wind breaker! Levi Foster became the first player in the history of the game to be yellow carded... for breaking wind! The AFC GOP player was having his boots checked by referee Bunny Reid before the Portsmouth Sunday League clash with Apsley House in November The 30-year-old couldn't hold it in and was lucky to be allowed to continue after team-mates talked the unimpressed official round after a red card looked to be forthcoming. Levi, who went on to win man of the match in the 5-0 victory, blamed a dodgy Saturday night curry. Goal king Matt gets a bum rap! Wellingborough striker Matt Judge thought it would be a good 'craic' to moon AFC Rushden fans in the Northamptonshire Senior Cup last October. But it was a bum steer as referee Scott Millar was watching. By the time he pulled his shorts up, the red card was in the air. They recently took on the Larkhall Athletic Youth side, winning 7-1 at home. Goals came from Liam Monell (2), Jamal Collins (2), Kyle Ford, Josh Campbell and Lewis Wyatt (triallist). On Tuesday evening, with only twelve players available, the youngsters were beaten by Wick of the Bristol Premier Combination, by 3-1. It is a great help to the club and also helps the Supporters Club, who will be helping the club, in many ways, once more. The New Season s 50 Club draw, (for August) is due to be held on Tuesday 3 rd September when we are due to host Taunton Town. The AGM was held on July 2 nd and the main points of the meeting were the election/re-election of committee members. Both ANDY MILNE and CAROLINE SMARDON have stood down from their positions and the committee is now as below. OLLIE MARKS The committee would like to recognise the hard work that both Andy and Caroline have given to the cause over the last three years. The CLUB SHOP are re-stocking this season. Already, we have received some replica shirts and we can order more. Also Polo shirts have been delivered and we can obtain training tops and track-suit tops. Supporters Club members of 10% can be applied. We are also hoping to buy some new scarves in time for the winter. We also have a selection of last season s training tops and track-suit bottoms which will be sold cheaply. It has also been noted that the FOOTBALL CLUB will take over the funding of match-travel and 3-match pool sales this season. However, MUSC (2009) will continue to organise Matchday s GOLDEN GOAL, The 50 CLUB and the PREDICTION LEAGUE. The Football club have finalised details of the next Sportsman s Evening, to be held at the club. The event, on Thursday 26 th September will feature former Denmark & Liverpool star JAN MOLBY, as guest speaker. In his playing career, Molby made 33 appearances for Denmark, but is probably more well known for his 12 years at Anfield, where he won three league titles and three FA Cups. He also played for Ajax, Barnsley & Norwich City and had spells as Player/Manager at Swansea City and as Manager of Hull City. Now as a regular pundit for Radio 5 Live, & TV commentator for Danish TV, Molby is a mean poker player and regularly plays in professional events. Commercial Manager SHAUN HONOUR who is tasked with bringing such events to Cossham Street, told MUFC ONLINE the club s official website Jan was one of the finest midfielders of his generation and this event will be another evening not to be missed. 32 NON-LEAGUE DAY No League without Non-League A E GREB I ve watched them all, the adverts that is; the ones extolling the virtues of this glorious season ahead. Every year they appear; all gilt and flash. Star names in celebrated poses with invisible crowds cheering their wonderful dexterity; ninety seconds of such hypnotic brilliance, we re titillated by the promise of unparalleled experiences that only their respective coverage can bring. Really, what more could any sports fan want? This multi-million pound industry would probably have us believe the answer is nothing. If you love great sport, step this way. Prepare to be amazed. affirms one of the big two, whilst the other to whom every goal mattered now tugs at the heart-strings with dream after dream, tear after tear. Undoubtedly it s vital to give supporters aspirational images but, this mainstream view promotes but the tip of our sporting iceberg. Down below it, a much more familiar world exists. There s probably not a single one of us who cannot remember taking part in sport; the joy in activity, the fresh air, camaraderie, the coaches that voluntarily helped us. In truth we probably all yearn for a little of that grass roots innocence again; the time when we could imitate and daydream. Whilst our playing days might sadly be on the wane, the celebration of sporting achievement should never diminish. This season, whilst only a few hundred games will be showed live on TV; probably a great deal more than that number will be played (live) in Steps 1 to 6 every single Saturday. The squad and pitches sizes will be exactly the same as those in the top leagues; the standard of games won t necessarily be any worse. Supporters will sing encouragement, players will commit to thunderous tackles and, incredible goals will still be plentiful. Really, whatever your level, football is an equally beautiful game. As Graham Taylor, once of Grimsby Town and Lincoln City reminds us: The importance of non-league and grassroots football should never be underestimated. We all start in the latter, and hundreds of us need the former, simply because it is such a small percentage of players who can attain and succeed at full time professional level. In celebration of the unheralded majority, Non-League Day returns on 7th September. Once again supported by a host of top names the message is clear; the football pyramid is very much connected, from bottom to top, and back again. Careers are built through the pyramid levels and, experience also comes down to assist and guide those below. From the Wessex League, QPR s Charlie Austin has risen through the ranks. US International Jay Demerit started out at Southall; Stuart Pearce at Wealdstone, and Chris Smalling at Maidstone. The examples really are just too numerous to mention. Developing managerial careers lower down, former internationals Marcus Gayle is at Staines Tow n whilst Phil Babb manages Hayes & Yeading United. For all these footballing heroes, and many more, non-league football is vital. Over looked by the media it might be but, it is equally important to the continuation of football in this country. Remembering that fantastic footballing triumphs can be found in every town and village, it s appropriate to show thanks and support to those who keep this part of the pyramid alive. On Non-League Day, with England having played on Friday night, there will be no Premier League or Championship football to bring to our living rooms. 33 AN ALTERNATIVE HISTORY OF BRISTOL SPORT HARRY DOLMAN : GREAT SOCCER VISIONARY A SIDEWAYS SLANT By JONTY MORGAN It has often been said that HARRY DOLMAN was Bristol s greatest soccer visionary. He started adult life as a draughtsman but packed it all in when central heating became popular. It wasn t long before his genius for designing machinery began to pay dividends. He invented the machines that took money off of passengers on the London Underground. He was then in the process of designing machines that could take money off people all over the country, be they underground, overground, or even in the ground, when Harold Wilson was elected Prime Minister and rendered such machinery useless. He had several burning desires for Bristol City upon becoming their Chairman, the first of these involved floodlights. Ever since he had been a toddler, he d dreamt of City playing matches at night. It wasn t until he was much older that he dreamt of them playing matches at night, under floodlights. It was then that all these dreams turned to nightmares, because he could now see what was going on. Wolves were the pioneers of floodlit football in the early 1950s but the electrical genius wasn t far behind with his system of stadium lighting. At Molineux, Wolves had clusters of lights attached to stationary poles at fixed points above the ground. Dolman s plan differed radically from this, in that he had lights attached to a pole above the player s heads, so that throughout the game, they were always in motion. A friendly against Wolves was arranged in 1953, but the lighting experiment was not a success. The reasons for this were: 1. When players wanted to commit a dirty tackle, they simply removed the bulb until the deed was done. 2. Players couldn t remain stationary for too long otherwise they were targeted by dogs, wishing to cock their legs. 3. In the second-half, Dolman experimented with placing red bulbs in the lights of the City players to match the team s colours and as a result of this, convictions for kerb crawling in certain parts of inner-city Bristol dramatically fell to zero for 45 minutes ; while in contrast certain spectators discovered new ways to finance their allegiance to the club, of which hitherto, they d had no concept of. 4. The 24, 008 spectators present waited behind long after the final whistle for the players to come back onto the pitch. Not to give them a standing ovation, but so they could see where the exits were because it had all gone so bloody dark. 5. Certain players were upset at being given a bulb of dimmer wattage than their team-mates. Harry Dolman s dream for Bristol City was to make them one of the great teams in the land and to help this dream become reality he knew he needed to secure the services of a much sought after young marksman from Wiltshire, called JOHN ATYEO. John s signature for the club was secured after Mr. Dolman and Atyeo s Father brokered the kind of deal that no other City player could ever dream of. He was always to be the best paid player at the club, and could remain a part-timer as long as he wished. He also could continue to live in Wiltshire, and train as a Schoolteacher. Dolman s faith in John Atyeo was more than repaid as he went on to score 350 goals for the City. A Football League record total for one club. He also scored five goals in six appearances for England and would surely have played more times for his country had Mr, Winterbottom, the England Manager, not disliked part-timers. 37 AND ANOTHER THING!! -1 FIRSTLY TODAY, WHAT ABOUT THOSE PATHETIC CELTIC FANS who caused mayhem at a preseason friendly away at Brentford (!) in July?? OK, I know I m a bit late with this, but there s always so much to say in this column, you know that, but hey, better late than never. You can see footage of what happened on You Tube. The Hoops fans/idiots set off flares before the game, throwing some on to the pitch & then they spilled onto the pitch to celebrate their win at the end, in an intimidating manner, with some of them trying to bring down the crossbar, just like some of their forefathers did at Wembley in 1977 when Scotland fans tried to wreck Wembley, which we English have never forgotten. But what is it with some of these Celtic fans?? Is a trip to Brentford for a 2 nd XI friendly that much more exciting than winning their league in the current one-horse race up there? Well, I suppose it is & a trip to London even for a friendly v Brentford (who with all due respect are not exactly Chelsea or Arsenal) will probably be the highlight of the Celtic season, which is a pity because they did really well v Barcelona last term, but that s history now. So well done, Celtic fans, what a great advert for your club you really are whilst the Rangers fans were SUPERB on their visit to Ashton Gate in July & didn t resort to pitch invasions, cross-bar swinging or anything like that.. FIRST BATCH OF QUICKIES: And staying in Scotland, I see that the new SPFL has announced that the SPL is now called the Scottish Premiership, the old First Division is now the Scottish Championship & hey presto, Divisions 2 & 3 are now re-branded as Scottish League One & Scottish League Two. Not rocket science, is it? I wonder how long it took them to think that up??(!!) Mind you, it doesn t change one thing up there does it? Whatever they call the league, Celtic will still win the Scottish Premiership Now football is a funny old game of course, and opinions do vary, but look at Ipswich Town. Last season, they struggled early on, but gradually pulled clear of the bottom 3 & finished just above the bottom teams. So, this summer, they made a number of signings, including THREE players from RELEGATED Bristol City, and hey-ho, all of a sudden, the tabloids have them down as potential play-off candidates! It s amazing what relegated players can do for you. NOW DAVID MOYES HAS A TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW, we all know that & he s a likeable bloke, but I think bleating to the media about Man Utd s tough start to the season, on the eve of the campaign, as though the first few fixtures were not randomly selected, was a bit unwise & didn t earn him any brownie points with football fans in general. Every club in the land will have tough-looking batches of games here & there (even though they re all tough!), whether at the start, middle or end of the season. So what do you do? YOU DEAL WITH IT & GET ON WITH IT. What about our own start to the season, when the fixtures came out in July?? GUILDFORD HOME completely unknown opponents, how did any of us know at the time what they d be like? MERTHYR AWA Y it s never easy to get anything over there & they only just missed promotion last season. FLEET AWAY another team we knew little about currently, even though we have played them in recent years. CLEVEDON HOME a side who can probably beat anyone in our division, home or away on their day, but equally, they can also lose to anyone, home or away and then BITTON HOME today in the FA Cup. Local rivals who are the underdogs this pm & have nothing to lose, so all the pressure is on us. Yes, we ve had a tough-looking start to the season too, David Moyes, and so have a lot of other teams, but it s all about stop whingeing & just getting on with it SECOND BATCH OF QUICKIES: Years ago, the phrase was that if you were being shunned in some way, you were sent to Coventry. Considering the plight of Coventry City FC these days, now they send you to Northampton instead, & even then, most Sky Blues fans don t bother going. And going back to that Bournemouth v Real Madrid pre-season game, where tickets cost up to 60 a time, what would YOU have done as a Cherries fan? Would you have said, no way, they will field their youth team, or would you have found the money from somewhere, just in case you ended up missing out on a wonderful piece of history?? For me, it would be the latter even more so because back in 1982, I thought 9 for a ticket to see the Rolling Stones at Ashton Gate was way too much, but come the day, I regretted not going big-time. Meanwhile, 40 goals were scored in the opening 9 games in the Carlsberg SW Peninsula Premier Division the other week, with our old adversaries Saltash United hammering St Blazey 8-1 in the day s biggest score.and staying in Cornwall, a big well done for Penzance, who went through the whole of last season without a single league win, but a 6-4 home win v Perranporth 2 weeks ago ended the bad run! 38 AND ANOTHER THING!! 2 NOW DOES ANYONE WATCH THE BIG MATCH REVISITED ON ITV4? I ve watched a fair few lately, mostly from the early 1980s & it s great to see all those forgotten-about players, dodgy haircuts, dodgy kits & mud-heap pitches! One game shown on there recently brought back some memories, which had been forgotten by this scribe Derby v Fulham in May 1983, the game that was never finished! Derby had needed a win to stay up, Fulham needed a win to go up & with minutes left, Derby led 1-0, with the crowd lining the pitch, awaiting the moment they would invade it in celebration, with the police powerless to stop them. With 80 seconds left, the referee blew for offside, but that started the pitch invasion & the game never re-started. Fulham players were attacked as they ran off the pitch & even prior to that, Derby fans on the touchline had interfered with play in the closing minutes. Fulham wanted the match played again, but an FA inquiry said the result would stand & the whole affair & intimidating atmosphere of those last few minutes left a rather sour taste. Those were the days, eh? And just to make it even more interesting, Derby had ex- Bristol City winger Mike Brolly in the no 7 shirt, whilst Fulham had a defender called Sean O Driscoll and he got subbed at one stage! IT S GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH FOOTBALL!! 3 things today (1) IT S ALL IN A NAME!! Watched a documentary recently about the Dam Busters where actor Martin Shaw retraced the flight path used by the Lancaster bombers on route to northern Germany. He's up in a plane accompanied by a former Red Arrows pilot called Dave SLOW!!! A Red Arrows pilot used to flying at lightning speeds & he's called SLOW? Hah! (2) AND SPEAKING OF THE RED ARROWS, and wonderful they are too, what about the pilot who inadvertently switched on the wrong colour smoke at one of the summer fly- pasts? He switched on the blue smoke when it should have been red, thereby spoiling the colour sequence in the sky! An easy thing to do, I suppose, when you re flying at a million miles per hour. The pilot s name was Ben PLANK! (3) WHAT A WASTE OF RESOURCES! One of our Esteemed Editors told me recently that, in his office, the printer 2 yards away from him ran out of toner ink. He then had to ring a "help desk" number in Wakefield (!) to advise them of the fault, and then this bloke 200 miles away rings up the IT man back down in the Bristol office who is on the floor above our Esteemed Editor, so then he came down one floor to replace the cartridge! These days, I m told, you can't just ring up the IT repair man upstairs to get a quick response, or go up and see him, and say, Can we have a new toner cartridge please? No, you have to ring up West Yorkshire first to report the problem. ABSOLUTELY BARKING MAD! FINAL BATCH OF QUICKIES: Now the likes of Gary Lineker & cricketer Freddie Flintoff can t be short of a bob or two, but to involve themselves in that 5 th rate Muppets-style BBC game show on a Saturday evening proves to me that some people will do absolutely anything for money. It has to be one of the WORST game shows the BBC have ever had the cheek to screen is rubbish like that what we pay our licence fees for?...meanwhile, Arsenal s opening day home loss to Aston Villa created many headlines, but did you know that during pre-season, Arsenal sent a junior XI to Luton Town to face the Hatters in a friendly & lost 7-0? It wasn t that widely reported, not surprisingly! The Gunners are (still) one of our country s top teams, but ANY line-up that they send to face a Conference side should not be losing 7-0 to them, should they?... And what a funny old game football is! Take the recent Paris St Germain v Ajaccio game in France. The stats? Big-spending PSG s goal attempts, both on & off target total 39, including 17 on target. Ajaccio goal attempts, both on & off target total ONE. Result? 1-1, & PSG didn t equalise until 86 minutes... Meanwhile, things were back to normal on the radio as I went home after the Guildford game. On Radio Bristol (Yeovil), City fans & Rovers fans were both moaning big time after their defeats that afternoon (I wonder if Sean O Driscoll looked at the league table afterwards??) & then over on TalkS port, Arsenal fans were in melt-down after the Villa flop. One fan even said he d never watch Arsenal again until Wenger was gone. With their gate prices, he s lucky to go in the first place!...and just to prove how crazy the Premier League can be, you have a club like Southampton spending over 27m this summer on 2 new players.
